Trennaa Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 hey guys..in a bit of a mental dilemma..I've been playing at a particular place on Mondays and Fridays now for the last month or two.. Consistently. On the Friday, there's two particular people who manage the bookings - promoter, and I guess "head dj". I've been playing melbourne stuff lately, which the crowd are tending to enjoy, im keeping an active dancefloor - which I guess is what the venue owners/promo will want. I have a big feeling that the promoter and head DJ are going to want me to change it up to Commercial music (top 40) and RnB.. My understanding is, its MY job as the dj (during my set) to read the crowd - if they're enjoying the melbourne stuff, keep it up, if they're starting to get bored, change style and read what they will want, use song requests etc..What would you guys do in this situation? Read the crowd and keep the crowd happy, or do what the promoter/head guy want? Quote
OxyKon Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 I would probably do what the promoter says cause they do pay you, if the crowd doesn't like the top 40 shit, then that's evidence that you were right to begin with.In saying that still read the crowd and maybe jump back and forth between the 2 styles, not to mention there are plenty of bounce tracks out there that are remixes of top 40, just see what happens Quote
Trennaa Posted December 18, 2014 Author Posted December 18, 2014 Yeah, I've been playing a heap of bootlegs lately, that I guess the crowd are enjoying/relating to.. I like the style too, so I'll be jumping around and I guess providing energy to the crowd.. But yeah, the big guy came up to me last week and told me to keep it commercial, at that stage, I thought "well, I have the crowd with this at the moment, so i'll keep it like this".. Afterwards he said he'd have me on again this week, so im very 50/50. I think I'll swap it around and chop/change this week. See how the crowd goes. Quote
ThatPartyGuy Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 remixes of commercial tracks are great for when management or a higher up tells you to play commercial crap constantly.but like before, change it up. if the crowd doesnt like the music, switch to something that is suited to the time of night & club.i've had this issue before with where i'm resident at. we just ended up agreeing that the different times of night will have different styles played but... we also agreed that this would be more of a guide line. no point sticking to something if no one wants it.you seem to know what your club is like and what people want, so you'll do fine man Quote
BeatLeSS Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 I think you're over reading the sitcho. He said last week to "keep it commercial" then recognized you held the crowd and is inviting you back. That night's over now. New night coming up. 'Keep it commercial' is a loose term used to keep the crowd there IMO. You shouldn't need to worry about until you speak again. Quote

Trennaa Posted December 18, 2014 Author Posted December 18, 2014 No doubt reading too far into it. The owner for a long time has not enjoyed 'bounce', but has a smile on his face if he has a room full of patrons which i understand. On monday, the promoter for the friday event was in, i was playing bounce, the patrons were enjoying it. He told me to stop playing 'bangers' (as much as i despise that term), and play rnb or retro, the guy running the night basically told him to piss off and let me keep going. I ended up with a full floor, everyone enjoying. Not trying to sound cocky, but i can read a crowd. After my set, the guy came up to me and said 'ill back off next time and leave it to you'.. we had a laugh about it afterwards. I just dont want to do the wrong thing by either party Quote
