Trennaa Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 I've probably stuffed up the placement of this thread.. im not generally to great on that one..What do you guys generally do to keep your motivation the DJing in particular? I'm averaging at this stage 1 set a week, and working on creating and building mixtapes once a month - prodominately on Melbourne Bounce, however I'm slowly venturing into the likes of Trap and RnB (where my tastes also are).At times, I get really overwhelmed. I have a small 'following' base if you will, and try to keep those guys entertained, they're very supportive of my movements too.I'm not trying to be the next Will Sparks or Tiesto by no means, however trying to get out there more and keep it rolling, however I do feel at times like im chasing my tail and not really getting anywhere...advice? tips? suggestions? LabRat Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 it's an interesting one. one genre can really bog you down i guess. i stopped djing and producing a little while ago because i got really bored of playing electro. everything to me started to sound like shit and it was hard to stay motivated. i played drum n bass on the side but i never pushed to get any dnb gigs coz it was just something i did at home, but got bored of that too (my own fault for not giving it a go). I'd suggest to definitely dig for other genres and experience different sounds. music, especially all genres of EDM, can become VERY monotonous. head out and meet different people at different venues and look at the different culture that particular sound may attract. Trennaa Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 Thanks for the reply mate.My thing is I do monthly mixtapes.. Try to generate some 'hype' out there.. I'm gonna try shake up the genre a little bit.. I've only really done Bounce, so yeah.. see how the next one goes Quote
SolDios Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 For me it's just finding boss new tunes that I WANT to mix. Quote
Trennaa Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 I get this too..See, Theres a track I love at the moment..However, I know the track isn't well received.. Im obviously still trying to gain exposure, would this be recommended to use in a mixtape because *I* like it, or keep it away because its not well received? Quote
BeatLeSS Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Try and see if it fits in between some more well received tracks.. Build up the mix with some known tunes then throw a track you're really digging (if it fits) to see if it'll get some attention. The only way to find out is to try, and it's a pretty wicked feeling pulling something new like that off.Be prepared to mix out of it at the next breakdown if it's not well received and you can't go wrong in my opinion! wrxfiend Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I often feel swamped too mate! So many ideas and things i want to do as an artist, but regular life and work are always in the way! Only really this year have i started pushing for gigs, which always end up in me trying to prep the night before and stressing about my routine, which kills the fun of doing what you love. All i can say is keep practicing, listen to as many styles of music as you can when you get the chance, and if you figure out a plan that works, let me know! lol Quote
Trennaa Posted October 28, 2014 Author Posted October 28, 2014 This is exactly how I am at the moment, wrx. My issue is.. when I created my first mixtape, to ultimately 'announce' I was DJing, I expected no more than 5 listens on Soundcloud, was blown away when I hit 30+ listens in 24 hours.. I guess I am wanting to expand and become more noticed, but getting bogged down, thinking maybe I've reached my potential, therefore lack of motivation. Quote
Tomy Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 motivation comes and goes. I've been dj-ing and producing for a bit over 8 years now. I've had all the ups and downs you could imagine i find setting goals is a good way. Ie pick the next club you want to play at and work towards it. try and be realistic with your goals too but be like "i wanna play ibiza next year" pick something local and work towards it. think stepping stones to you ultimate goal i guess. also don't be afraid to lack motivation either. it does get hard working full time and working on tunes, mixtapes, production, etc. if you find your lacking motivation then have a holiday from dj-ing. give yourself 1-2 weeks to just do nothing, make sure you set aside a re-start date and time that you stick to to get your motor running again after the break. good luck.
