BitMaestro Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I've reliesed that I'm attracted to DJ scratching/juggling as an instrument in itself over the mixing side of the artform.Articles like this has some examples of scratchers in bands http://kwotemusic.com/scratchinginaband.htmlI remember seeing an article about a guy called DJ Mercy playing with an orchestra, using middle C as his sample and figuring out his register with ultra pitch and how to play melodically. Can't find it on google though I was wondering if anyone had bands they know of with scratchers in them?Any style welcome. I'll start,I know DJ Jumps is in The Cat Empire, hard to find any other stuff on him though.Gets a 4 bar solo around 2:50And Herbie Hancock had Grand Master DST on 'Rockit':It's no Chameleon, but it's an example nevertheless. BitMaestro Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Really? Geez, I've really over looked them, or at least the songs I know of them he's back in the mix? Quote
BitMaestro Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Very interesting, I must admit I haven't heard a Linkin Park album all the way through, so 'tis interesting. Quote
Cupe Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 He's on heaps of their other songs. Also Bullfrog is a jazzy trip hop style band with Kid Koala as the DJ Quote
Kodiak Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Heaps of bands in the late 90's and early 2000's had a DJ scratching as part of the group. Linkin Park as mentioned and also Limp Bizkit who had DJ Lethal from House of Pain help them out. Crazy Town and Papa Roach come to mind as well from that era. Quote
BitMaestro Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 I had a feeling it was a 90s & 00s thing.I've got some papa roach stuff on my computer, I'll listen through to see what stuff he does. Quote

eggssell Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 that herbie hancock track, rockit is the freaking shiz. i remember that was our go to breakin track for many years! also that played a massive part of bringing the scratch to the masses.also cat empire kill it live. some dj's dont just scratch, but like you said play in the band with the turntable being the instrument. so drop vocal cuts. play rhythm sections. add melodiessome others that come to minddj dexter in avalanchesdj katch in the resin dogsdj aero from tommy lee's methods of mayhem (i liked that album)and a special mention, while not quite a band (since mike patton played all the instruments) BUT they did tour it and brought in tour musicians. general patton vs the x-ecutioners had faith no more's mike patton (who is an absolute musical genius) team up with the legendary x-ecutioners fka the x-men Quote

eggssell Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 i wouldnt say rage started it. id go with bodycount.but even then there were a lot of groups (on the rap and metal side) who would fuse it for various tracks.this was post bodycount and pre-rage and a bloody good track! this is public enemy covering their own track but this time featuring anthrax Quote
eggssell Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 also if you are digging the metal with hip hop sound OR the nu-metal/ dj in a band sound i recommend listening to two soundtracksJudgement Night - (which is where that Faith No More/ Boo-Ya-Tribe track comes from) which saw hip hop acts collabing with other genres. the entire album is gold. Spawn - this had metal acts combining with dance music actsi love both those albums Quote
eggssell Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 here is some old body count. this one doesnt have a lot of hip hop elements, though other tracks didthat break at 3.18 perfect to be sampled wrxit! Quote

Mitch Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Also, how could I forget the avalanches.. They incorporated a heap of sampling/scratching into their tracks. They did live stuff as a band and just dj sets. Also released one of the most popular Aussie albums ever Quote
