hyperzap Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Hi all,Its been a while since I've DJ'ed proper. Most of my time was back in the days of high school. Now as a uni student, I have been asked to play some music for a uni party as an opening set (before the main event).Problem is ... I've never done open before, nor am I fully in touch with the sort of music I should be playing as an opener.I know I need to start off slower (in the 2009 days I would have said start off with R&B and other low BPM) but not much detail on exactly what. Nor am I entirely sure what tracks I have lined up.I have till the 5th to prepare. So my questions are this:1. How should I tackle this in general?2. Can you list some tracks I should add to the list? (This is my main problem ATM).The set is going to be 7-8, possibly 7-9.Thanks,Tom Quote
andyman Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Hey mate,You're right in saying keep in chill to start with, no one wants bangers at 7PM (or even later ).I would check out the Nu Disco, Tech House, Deep House, etc charts on Beatport and see what you can find.Chill shit like Flume would go down a treat as well.Good luck with it! Cupe Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 It takes a bit of judging the crowd as well. Have contingency music in case they suddenly want it changed up.You never know what retard uni students will want. And obv try not to drop tracks the main event will be dropping. Quote
LabRat Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 i'm down for bangers at any time of the day but i agree with andyman. when i open i usually play tech house and slowly work my way up. usually at around 9pm/9:30pm i'll break into the commercial stuff and then i usually force the people to dance to bangers you just gotta read the crowd and slowly build that energy up for the next guy Quote
andyman Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 If it were me at an event at 7PM, I would be hammering down as many beers as possible to get pissed quickly.Keep it chilled, people will want to mingle and work the room to work out who they wanna fuck on the night, not dance. Quote
Cupe Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 And watch the 'noise'. People try to chat at that time and hard cranking noise will just piss people off.Like being at a pub having a chat then the live band starts. Quote
