Ok so i have just produced a song and i wish to add a small vocal slice from a movie to be the main hook. I have been looking online for a long time trying to find out about the legal situation of this.

I found out that "Riverside - Sydney Samson" does exactly the same thing. here:

If i was to do a similar thing, would i have to gain legal rights for it. I know that there is a problem with using audio from a song. And there are issues with how famous a hook or phrase is. But what if it just a completely random line from something that nobody will even remember, and if i could destort the voice so it doesnt sound like them?

Is this legal? or what would be the process i would have to use to legalise it.

Thanks.

i have the same issues with my remixes. it is illegal to use portions of vocal unless you have permission from the respectful owner of the original. your able to produce your mix the way you want but the track can not be sold to make profit. im think your not even supposed to distribute the track at all.

but yeh... i remix tunes and pass them around to people and thats about as far as it goes.

basically, if you start making a profit without copyrights and they catch you, you're screwed lol

yeah, no point worrying about it unless its getting released and then the label would be the one who would most likely figure all that shit out for you.

it doesnt necessarily have to be released does it.. what if you get famous off it. didnt danger mouse get done for the grey album? or maybe it was just a cease and dessist, but i was sure he got a spanking for it.

yeah if there isnt any profit in it you can sample what ever you want, well i do

and as far as getting release clearnce the label dosent do it, they ask you to do it im pretty sure? maybe both help im not sure. but there is like a rule. something like if the sample goes for onger then a few seconds you have to ask if not you can use it anyway

he makes a point. i think most guys are recognized from listening to a remix they've produced rather then an original. most of the times, the tune has stayed within 4 walls, never to be heard by anyone but the important guy lol

Thats why people make free releases, take girl talk for example, all he does is sample and then give his shit away for free, and he is pretty famous, people have been trying to sue him for ages without success, I think they got him recently, Im not sure. There was actually a program on this subject the other day on sbs, very interesting :)

I don't understand how someone can claim legal right over a persons voice, seeing as though in that situation its not the actor you are going to have a issue with, its the company, i completely understand sampling music, but the voice thing from movies confuses me.

nah if the tracks aren't selected for download they cant really do anything about it id say. they'd probably tell you to take it off but thats all they can really do

you can get done for mixing unreleased tracks (which would mean youve riped it from somewhere or stolen it costing them money.

even if the producer gave you the track, youd need the labels permision to use the unreleased track in a mix.
