g00se Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Visiting family from the States and am seriously considering moving here. In the Brisbane area and I'm curious to see what the mobile DJ scenes is like out here. Rates, gear, format, timelines etc. sure there is quite a difference from the U.S but would love to meet up with anyone and chat or better yet shadow an event. Let me know if anyone's up for it or have some advice on what to expect. Quote
wrxfiend Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Hi there,Might be an idea to start an introductions thread. As for mobile dj'ing I cant help you much, only done a few weddings for mates myself. There is a dedicated mobile section on the forum, may be some answers in there.Enjoy your stay. Kodiak Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Not a huge representation here from Brisbane (that contribute much) other than Tomy who can't help with the mobile thing. Most of the info you are chasing will be the same regardless of which city so hopefully some of the more experienced mobile DJ's can help there. Quote
eggssell Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 there is a handful up north (not necessarily brissy) who might have some idea of the landscape. just give it a couple of days as some people only get on during the weekend. while some of us are addictsbossman, maybe FB the query to see if it might attract responses. g00se Posted February 19, 2014 Author Posted February 19, 2014 Thanks for the responses guys. Don't think Brisbane will be where I end up when/if I move out here. Just trying to get a feel in general. Quote
Kodiak Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Thanks for the responses guys. Don't think Brisbane will be where I end up when/if I move out here. Just trying to get a feel in general.Brisbane does have a pretty awesome nightlife and seems to be pretty cool these days. It's certainly different to it's bigger cousins Sydney and Melbourne (although similar to Melbourne in many regards).edit: If you are in Brisbane Friday head out to Eaton's Hill Hotel and check out Bombs Away. Cheesy and corny but they put on a pretty good show. Quote
djbater Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 If I was in a new place I would probably look to join an agency of some sort to get some initial work. Just be wary, some of them take about a 75% cut of what they charge. Quote
g00se Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 Agency? Can anyone share on what you guys get paid for mobile gigs like weddings, birthday parties etc? Quote
djbater Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Agencies are generally the ones that come up first when you search ‘mobile DJ’ on google. Most of their websites have a link for employment. (It says they only hire talented DJs, but believe me they will hire anyone). Some of them even advertise on seek.If you were working for an agency, you would probably get maybe $200-$250 for a 5 hour function. And the agency will be making about the same off you.I did agency work for a few months many years ago, until I went to my cousins 21st where a DJ from the same agency was playing. Worst DJ I had ever seen/heard, and didn’t want to be associated with it. She didn’t know a thing about music. Quote
