Kodiak Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 What determines what key you're working in?Haven't you got that backwards? Quote
Mitch Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Are you talking in terms of determining what key you're writing your own track in?? Quote
Kodiak Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 ?Don't you pick a key and compose your song accordingly? How else do you know what range of notes to use? Quote
Boss101 Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 I'm still a beginner. Can somebody explain it? Quote
Mitch Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I suggest you read up on some basic theory, to get a concept of scales. I'm On my phone and don't have any material to link you right now, but hopefully someone can link you some training material Quote
Boss101 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Posted January 20, 2014 I've been learning a bit of theory. I havn't came across much about what key I'm working in and that sort of stuff. That would be much appreciated though! Thanks Quote
Boss101 Posted January 23, 2014 Author Posted January 23, 2014 So is music theory just chords and scales? Or is there alot more to it than that? Quote
wrxfiend Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 So is music theory just chords and scales? Or is there alot more to it than that?more than that mate, tones, semi tones, circle of fifths etc etcthis websites helps me alot http://www.8notes.com/resources/notefin ... chords.aspi have struggled with theory for a while, most times i do shit by ear.but perservere with it, knowledge is power lol Quote
Kodiak Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Music theory is as big a subject as maths and science. There are multiple uni degrees deducated to it. But saying that, for EDM production only a limited knowledge is required. But the more knowledge you have the less trial and error you will experience. Quote
Mitch Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 If music theory was a penis, chords and scales is just the tip(Simplest way I can think to put it) Quote
Boss101 Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Thanks guys. I'll have to check out that site Wrxfiend.Hahah Mitch! Quote
Boss101 Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Also what are the basics/how much of this will I need to help me? Obviously I wont be working professionally anytime soon. So I'd like to know the basics to just be able to make a song using Ableton which sounds half decent to put on Soundcloud. Just a bedroom producer basically on a laptop. Quote
Boss101 Posted January 24, 2014 Author Posted January 24, 2014 Also.. Are there any apps for Android that teach you about music theory? Quote
wrxfiend Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Can you play stuff by ear, ie if you hear a song can you find the notes on a keyboard? This is my technique lol!Rhythm is some thing else again, if you can hold a beat and play notes by ear your half way thereMaybe search some high school level music lessons, that should get you started. Boss101 Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 I have never played a keyboard. Thinking of buying one though. Quote

Chenny88 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 There's a crazy amount of information to learn about music theory, im studying a BA Music and im still struggling to get my head around it. I reckon it helps if you know at least the basics of music theory. Scales, triads, basic chord progressions. This will give you the basis of your piece you will be creating...This is a good link to learn about Concepts Of Music: http://wrightstuffmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/music-1-aural-concepts-2007.pdfThe concepts of music will help you analyse and break down the song, you will have a understanding of how composers/producers intentionally compose their songs.
