AUSTRALIAN DJ FORUMS

I was contacted by a marketing manager who distributes the Klipsch speaker brand in Australia, who found me through triple J unearthed and has invited me to play at a media event next week but I wasn't really sure what to play.

She says: "The event will be attended mostly by media from a range of industries – music, technology, sport, lifestyle so their tastes will be quite varied. For me, the main point of getting you in to play is to create atmosphere and showcase the speakers. The Klipsch brand is all about recreating the live music experience and delivering authentic sound. I guess the more music styles showcased the better and I am happy for you to take us wherever you want to go."

what type of music do you reckon will be suitable?

hmmm but they said they want atmosphere, not people actually sitting there listening and or dancing; so I don't think top 40 stuff is necessarily the right thang. EDIT: in fact I think songs that are sonically full will be even better

mos def play your stuff. from the old days and your new stuff. they obviously picked you out from unearthed for your tracks.

I would say a range of ambient drumstep or glitch type shit; moving into more prog house then stepping up to funk hose; before it gets all disco and electro in this place. scattering your tracks in between!

here ill even do an adjf playlist to visualise it

When I said top 40 I didn't mean top 40 EDM.

I said top 40 of all charts, including things like rock and pub classics and shit like that.

Stuff that the general demographic will recognise and enjoy as they wander past.

if they found him on triple J unearthed and contacted him, i dont think they are looking for BBQ anthems. imo.

prob more electro stuff that has a wide range of sounds that can 'show off' what the Klipsch speakers can do and stand out from others.

I think eggs list is a good start.

Sourcing someone from an area doesn't mean they want them to perform to the same demographic.

They want to show off their speakers with tunes that will draw a general crowd in.

Playing little known tracks by unknown producers won't help their overall cause.

If you're playing EDM play bangers, if you're playing classics, play bbq anthems (but with bass, not some shitty cold chisel).

but there will be no general crowd to draw in.

"The event will be attended mostly by media from a range of industries – music, technology, sport, lifestyle.."

so i still think its about showing of the range the speakers can give out.

also tbh, i think if they wanted someone to pump out some classics and BBQ stuff they would of looked for more of a DJ than a young producer on Triple J.

How is that not more of a generalised crowd than you can get?

I'm not saying play sweet fucking home alabama, I'm saying play a large variety of music that can also showcase the product.

Think from a business perspective rather than a DJ/punter angle.

yep agree with what ysm has pointed out. but in regards to that last line, maybe someone in marketing said yo lets get deadmau5 or tiesto in; finance said fark off out of budget; then marketing say hmmmm where can we find one of these fancy new EDM cats on the cheap; then the feral hippy new grad goes theres some pretty hip people on unearthed; finance says lock it in! then they all go to the toilet to snort coke

I just asked her what exactly the audience will be doing while I am playing, should give me a better idea of what to play. If they are just mingling/talking etc I was thinking just play anything that sounds sonically good and showcases the speakers. I don't think it will be the dancefloor/put your fucking hands up/everyone singing along type gig.

My thoughts was it's gonna be like a convention with stalls and shit like that and you'll be the guy making the buttons work to have sound come out of the product

yea, u are right.

"I expect that people will spend some time looking at all the products and speaking with the sales guys and I guess in a way you will be part of the 'product display' so there will be some interaction. Once they have done this I think they will spend more time eating and drinking and enjoying your music.

It is probably a good idea to play some commercial music but I don't want you to feel restricted. I want you to have a really good opportunity to showcase your own style and talent."
