A man has died of a suspected drug overdose and 87 revellers were arrested during a hardcore techno music festival in western Sydney on Saturday, police say.

The death and 84 drug-related arrests occurred during Defqon.1 musical festival which attracted more than 18,000 dance fans to the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith.

Police say the 23-year-old Victorian man was taken to a medical tent just before midday where his condition quickly deteriorated and he suffered several seizures.

Despite attempts by paramedics to revive him after several cardiac arrests, he was pronounced dead at Nepean Hospital about 10.30pm.

Police arrested 87 people at the festival. Most of the arrests were drug-related, except for three who were detained for public order offences.

Penrith police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

It is believed another 14 other patrons were taken to hospital after suffering apparent drug overdoses.

The Defqon.1 music festival attracted 130 international and Australian music acts who performed big synth beats, electro mixes and techno hits for hard-dance enthusiasts.

Many of the festival attendees brought their own tents and camped overnight.

International acts included Frontliner from Holland, Brennan Heart, Coone, Psyko Punkz, Gunz For Hire and Ran-D as well as top local producers including Toneshifterz Connected and Dillytek.

Its an absolute shame to hear about the guy passing away.. He was from Victoria aswell (Which is Q-Dance's least favourite state after the events of X-Qlusive 2008) its the last thing they want against their name :(

Regardless it was an amazing day one probably the best edition production/setup wise to date. heres a pic from the end show last night:

Wonder how many died in various civil wars around the world during the time Defqon was on

^wise

every year at Glastonbury several people die of various reasons - but compared to towns and cities of similar population size as the festival the death rate at the party full of people having fun is on average lower, even allowing for the different age range and demographic.
