hoddi Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Hey everyone As some of you might know, I participated in the Soho Friday's DJ Comp on friday. I got there at around 7:45 and by 8 there were only 3 out of the 6 contestants there. We each picked a number out of a hat which was to be our order. I was third to pick and I said out loud 'I just don't want first' so obviously its just my luck thats what I got. I was nervous because I had never been in a club before as I had only turned 18 the sunday before my gig. I was used to my controller and laptop as my set up however as I only have Serato Itch I couldn't use that with the gear they had so I decided to use USBs. As I never usually use them though this wasn't the best idea. I also didn't have rekordbox so the USBs loaded really slowly and I couldn't see the BPM's for so long so I had no idea what I was doing. Some of my transitions were soooooo off but some were alright. I didn't do very well but I still had fun and I can't wait to get back into it. Two people went through from my round which obviously wasn't me but I've been told that they want me for other gigs anyway because they know I can do better. Everyone was so nice to me and were really supportive so although it didn't go well I still want to continue with it press press I'm a dj Quote
Kodiak Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Was wondering how you went. Good on you for giving it a go under such circumstances. Quote
hoddi Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Oh and I'm trying to prepare for HSC (final exams) so didn't have much time to prepare for this :'( I'm going to buy Serato before I ever play again so that I can use my laptop Quote
hoddi Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 this was the mix I was trying to play, not perfect here either but oh well http://soundcloud.com/laurenhoddinott/september-mix-1 Quote

mattus123 Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Congrats hoddi!! Next time you'll nail it! What equipment do you have at home? Quote
vieri3217 Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 well done!! its nice to see DJ's with a positive attitude and have the guts to go on stage and show their stuff!I completed my first ever gig in public at HQ at Soho earlier this year and i know how you fee when you go on stage. Not many people notice bad transitions between tracks unless there are DJ's with the trained ear. Now you know your weak points and you can now work on them. THere are many DJ courses out there that can help you. A good one is Beatshed in adelaide. they are located at Soundpond. Website for more info: http://www.beatshed.net/#!/services/dj-lessonsHope this helps. RegardsJoe Quote
hoddi Posted September 11, 2013 Author Posted September 11, 2013 I've got a ddj-s1 so I'm fairly used to pioneer. And yeah I've just gotta keep practicing, I am pretty confident with my skill, it was just really nerve racking Quote
Tomy Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 good job! comps are always a bit scary. Quote
Skank Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 good work, youll never realise what you forgot to do or what more you could of done untill you are in front of the decks on the night of the gig Quote
BrizzeeRascal Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Switching to serato scratch is a really good idea, the Ddj-s1 is great for learning but can't really be used in clubs, you'll have no trouble using scratch with clubs equipment as the layout is basically the same, good luck :-) Quote
