Cupe Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 The two companies will work together to create a new standard for an optical disc capable of recording at least 300GB of information, Panasonic announced on Monday. The goal is to unveil the actual technology before the end of 2015. The new disc format will be targeted toward professional users, specifically businesses that need to archive huge amounts of data for long-term storage.Pointing to one potential customer, Sony cited the video production industry, including motion picture houses and broadcasters. But cloud-based datacentres could also tap into the high-capacity discs to retain vast amounts of data."Optical discs have excellent properties to protect them against the environment, such as dust resistance and water resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored," Panasonic said in a press release. "They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them a robust medium for long-term storage of content."In comparison, today's Blu-ray discs can store 25GB on a single layer and 50GB on a dual layer.Source: cnet.com Quote
GREMM1S Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Seems a bit silly considering they are slowly becoming obsolete. Quote
Cupe Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 Fuck that I have more faith in a burnt CD than the external hard drive pieces of shit for backing up Quote
Scottie Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Wouldn't transfer speeds still be lower than blu ray or over usb? Quote
SolDios Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I really dont see the point, please just replace cd's with cheap usb's already. Quote
Kodiak Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 This seems more aimed at data backup than regular use. Although I can see this being useful once 4k movies/technologies are available. Quote

SolDios Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 At schools we just use backup tapes, reliable, heavy duty and heaps of storage.I really just cant see the point Quote
Cupe Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Most general consumers don't have access to backup tapes, Sol. Quote
GREMM1S Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I would still go HDD over optical storage. Scratches, eventual fading, physically losing it etc. Quote
