During Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, EDM superstar Tiësto had the great thrill of meeting electronic music pioneer Giorgio Moroder, who has been in the news lately for his collaboration with Daft Punk on their acclaimed new album, "Random Access Memories."

“He’s one of my youth heroes,” Tiësto says of Moroder, in a Dutch accent unaffected by well over a decade of DJ globetrotting, over the phone from a hotel room in Washington State. “He’s such a talented producer and to meet him, yeah, it’s one of those things, like, so cool. He comes to my show and he stayed the whole set actually; I played for three hours and he was there for three hours. He’s in his seventies and still rocking strong. We did shots together and it was fun to hang out together. I was honoured that he came actually.”

In Moroder's Facebook photo of the two men downing the aforementioned shots, Moroder can be seen sporting earplugs, which suggests it may have been a little too loud to have a good chat or plan some kind of project together.

“We didn’t have much conversation but we exchanged numbers after the set.,” Tiësto admits. “We are going to sit together soon in L.A. or Vegas and we’re really going to talk. We need to have a conversation but something will happen. I mean, he did a collaboration with Daft Punk, so why not with me?” he chuckles.

Indeed, why not Tiësto? What’s so special about Daft Punk? Everyone is still talking about their new record but Tiësto isn’t really feeling it.

“It got so much attention because it’s so different and it’s an attitude album,” he says. “It’s cool to like Daft Punk. Even if you’re not into the song, as soon as you hear [“Get Lucky’”], you see all the cool people go, ‘Oh yeah, this is cool, that’s my song,’ and they don’t really even enjoy it.

“I’m destroying them now,” Tiësto catches himself. “Sorry Daft Punk.”

Tiësto goes on to say that he really likes the band’s old stuff, like the "Homework" LP or solo productions by Thomas Bangalter on the Roulé label, where he says Banglater “made some amazing tunes.”

“But the 'Tron' soundtrack wasn’t that great and this is not great, either,” he argues. “But because it’s Daft Punk and they’re supposed to be cool and they had the amazing pyramid at Coachella a couple of years ago and the helmets — they’re fucking cool. But the music doesn’t deliver on the hype so much.”

When asked to elaborate on his comment that cool people pretend to like Daft Punk, Tiësto says he’s observed this firsthand at a party. “Get Lucky” came on and these girls got excited and started dancing to it so he approached them.

“I said, ‘Lemme ask you a question; do you really like this song?’ And they went quiet and were like, ‘Uh…it’s all right, it’s all right,’” he laughs. “That’s what I mean. Because it’s Daft Punk and we want to believe the hype; we are cool people so we have to think this is cool.”

Tiësto just released a new mix album called "Club Life 3: Stockholm" and has been hitting the road for shows, including sets at Toronto’s Digital Dreams Festival on June 30, Ottawa’s Escapade Festival on July 1, and Festival d'été de Québec in Québec City on July 11.

Tiesto's new music has nothing on DP in terms of musical quality.

However this x1000000

In some cases that is true. Some people try to be cool.

You guys need to open your mind and understand how the scene works globally and at the level of industry these guys are in.

A lot of what he's saying is true.

Not so much now, but Tiesto in his prime was huge. Legit household name, how many trance producers or electronic producers are asked to make anthems for the olympics etc.

But he really comes across as a wank these days, lost alot of respect and love for selling out.

He's large and he knows it I guess.

People saying Tiesto's music is piss compared to Daft Punk.

There's a reason why he has been, and still is, in the top 5 ranked DJ's in the world. The music scene in Europe etc is far beyond what people know about in Australia.

Daft Punk make good tracks, no doubt; classics that will stand the test of time. But there are so many band-wagoners it's insane.

Get Lucky is a terrible, repetitive track imo. The hook is mental, but that's probably because it's looped 500 times in the track.

Don't get me wrong, I have the Homework album on wax and I've been a Daft Punk fan from way back, but I don't think you can even compare Tiesto and Daft Punk.

They're totally different and from completely different musical worlds.

To sum up what I got from Tiesto was really that he wasn't out to take a stab at them on purpose, only pointing out that whatever they bring out people will eat up.

This is because they're large and have carved their place in music history forever.

How can you argue that?

The fact that he said "I'm killing them right now" is a direct stab at them?

ummm i think that line was becasue he caught himself being critical of their work. which is why he then apologises.

so he isnt taking a stab at daft punk, he was merely saying how in his opinion get lucky was not that good yet people are eating it up AND then apologises for being critical AND then further elaborates what he was getting at in terms of people wanting to like whatever is considered cool.

English isn't his first language.

I understand that to be him not meaning to end up talking shit about them, then realises he is. Meaning, in this current conversation, not some kind of other context or music-scene related.

He doubles back and laughs about it.

I expect he was talking to someone about something else, and the topic of Daft Punk came up, and the author made an entirely new article, out of context, focussing only on the Daft Punk area of conversation, making it look like he was intentionally putting them down (which he realises himself mid conversation then apologises, still jokingly, because I bet his intention wasn't to put them down).

All he was doing was saying Daft Punk is so large that people bandwagon their tracks even if they're not very good. Then laughs about it when he realises he is unintentionally destroying them during an interview/conversation that probably wasn't, in context, entirely about his opinion of Daft Punk.

*edit*

eggs beat me and kind of went down a similar path

Ahhh so you think he meant Im killing them in this interview instead of his music is killing theirs?

That's a fair explanation. Personally I'm not the greatest fan of the new album when i compare it to discovery etc. it still is a solid album though

How could he say his music is killing theirs? Totally different markets in different genres released to different demographics.

He may be a cocky cunt but he's not a moron.

This article is a perfect example of how a journalist can pull something out of context and steam roll with it

Also I heard angelina and brad pitt are getting a divorce again

I got to shake hands with tiesto after an interview at a music masterclass a few years ago... and he seemed very humble.

I do agree, in the fact that it is 'cool to like daft punk'

It also seemed 'cool' to like tiesto a few years ago.

One little thing i like to do is playfully quiz people (not unlike tiesto it seems)... for example, say there is an upcoming music festival and the headliner is armin van buuren, and someone is talking about how they want to go to the festival becasue they love armin van buuren. If you ask them 9 times out of 10 what the favourite avb song is they will say 'this is what it feels like' and 9 times out of 10 they won't be able to name any other tracks.

I honestly can't name a Tiesto or Armin Van Buuren song hey

Before this is what it feels like Armin had the popularity for legit being one of the best djs in the world, now he's using the popularity of that song more so.

Or the general punter.

I manily use it as a diversion tactic not to play their request

discovery

I always thought, and still do really, that discovery was shit. Couple of decent tracks on it. This album is what got people jumping on the bandwagon with Daft Punk. Chart success and animated videos to get the kids involved. ;)

This new album is much better imo.

They'll never better homework

im inclined to agree with Cupe on this... media just taking a small section of a large conversation, and then exaggerating it and making something seem that its not

but at the same time, i think Tiesto really has hit the nail on the head with this one. Whether you think the ablum is good or not is almost irrelevant... people will say that they like it, just because who produced it.

i can almost garantee that if that album was released under a different 'no name' local DJ, it would not get the applause that it did. Tiesto makes reference to Daft Punk and their new album, but it really happens with all big name artists and their tracks

just the way to the world works..... unforutnetly

i dont totally agree mattus. i think its a well produced, and great album.

im not gonna sit here and say its the best. but i love it.

and so it wouldnt have mattered if they were no names, a good album is a good album. In fact i think they copped a whole lot of criticism purely because of who they were (refer other daft punk thred). I.e. if it wasnt a fantastic out of the park home run album, people call it crap.

anyways another point. all this hate for people who discover an artist on a new album. who gives a shit! how elitist can people be. so only people who were around to see a star begin is allowed to enjoy them! what a joke.

Reminds me of something i saw by Zedd, which i totally agree with:

“I have to admit I’m a little confused by some young fans nowadays and their behavior and reaction to artists success. When I was a (young) kid the only thing I wished for my fav bands was exposure & success. I’d celebrate if I saw/heard them on TV: radio. I remember hearing “Billy Talent” on MTV. I forever will love MTV for that. They made me discover a band I’ve listened to for years!

It’s 2013: you hear people say: “I heard my fav song on the radio. Thanks for ruining it!” This reaction is completely paradox to me.

Another thing is, I remember seeing my fav artists in a way ‘untouchable’ and ‘far away’. I’m glad twitter accounts bring artists and fans closer BUT that turned into people being rude and saying mean things to the artist just to get attention and an answer.

Such a selfish, stupid behavior. It feels like fans want to ‘own’ the artist and decide over their music, shows and give their 2 cents on everything. Sometimes you gotta let the artist be the artist and either accept what an artist puts out creatively or just listen to something else. Anyway, I usually prefer for people to make their own thoughts for themselves but this car ride was just really fucking long”
