Trying to get some info about getting into the wedding side of djing. Ive been djing for about four years for all types of parties and have recently started spinning lounge bars and clubs. Im 18 at the moment, do you think its possible to get into this part of the industry? or is my age going to restrict me from doing this? I understand a lot more work has to go into these events compared to your average party.

Have shit tonnes of cheesy music, have patience with drunks, listen to the father of the bride, hes the one paying the bill!

Ive done a couple of weddings, only for mates, and they tested my patience!

Good luck

Hi,

I have been mobile DJing for about 7 years, and probably doing weddings for about 4. I only started doing weddings when people I knew started getting married. When you play at a wedding venue for the first time it gives you the opportunity to impress the funtion manager and get on the preferred suppliers list, which generates a lot of business. Towards the end of last year / start of this year i was doing up to 3 weddings a week (plus full time work which killed me). There are pros and cons to wedding DJing... pros being, better pay, free meal, etc. Cons being that a lot of it is fade in fade out, so can get quite boring.

But in order to get started i would recommend promoting yourself as a wedding dj at every opportunity, lie / extend the truth and say that you have done heaps of weddings before (nobody wants there wedding to be your first gig). And introduce yourself to the function manager.

Agree with the comments of needing to be reliable and reassuring. And also not going over the top with your music playlist.

Presentation of your setup and yourself is also very important. If you are good with the microphone that is a big plus too.

MC's are not cheap so if you can add that into your package for a little extra, I charge $150, then they get a great deal.

I do lots of weddings and MC 70% of them.

I have a mate that does a bucketful of weddings. He gets most of his work from wedding fair/expo type events at Exhibition Building in Melb etc so if you can be bothered (which I can't) to go to those and setup a stall you would prob pick up a lot of work from them...but it will take time and effort.

that is a pro tip :thumright:
