MC's that yell over live EDM. Wat?

What's your opinion on necessity of MC's during live EDM sets just yelling (what appears to be) random things over the music?

I can understand in jungle and shit sometimes or when it's song lyrics, but otherwise?

Some MC's are good at it and it sounds OK.

Some MC's are terrible and just yell "Put your fucking hands up".

My opinion is I can't stand it, but in saying that it does help amp the crowd up.

the only MC that ive really gotten into now that i think more into it is Dynamite MC, have seen him live before with Caspa and was a really good show, plus he also does a lot of vocals for his tracks and man other artists

Depends what format's the set's being played over

you go to watch getdarker sets or rinse fm sets, and you'll find mc's over them because it's being broadcast over live radio. Most of them are shoutouts or just responding to tweets or someshit, and it doesn't feel out of place at all when you're listening to it live. IMO, listening to a set live over radio (dunno about in clubs and shit) I'd rather hear an MC doing some talking instead of having no interaction with what's going on there

i would strongly agree here, i listen to podcasts from an old radio show from the Bay Area and it was quite common for MC's to do their thing over instrumentals, some of it was also doing shout outs to people calling in saying shit like "yo my name is so n so, this set is killah, keep it up", next minute the MC is be told "Yo this guy just called in saying this is killah, give him a shout out" when it comes to live sets its another ball game altogether

At my club gig we had one who was actually really good, partly cause he could rap and sing decent.

Actually added to the music instead of making people smash there heads against the DF in anger.

i dont mind it at DnB gigs, if its done well

that whole rapping at doubletime is pretty cool i reocn. having said that i wouldnt wanna hear it for the entire set, just every now and then where its appropriate

Generally no. Cause its mostly just inane bullshit.

But I have seen once where the MC got Bombs Away out of the shit when they lost power to their decks. While the tech guys got power up and running again the MC beat boxed (not very good, but good enough) while the boys did the vocals to one of their songs. Made a hilight out of a failure.

yeh depends on the tunes and depends on the MC.

amanda blank and spank rock and heaps of the people in that baltimore bass club scene, started off as MCs at clubs. So as the DJ mixed tracks they would jump in. Doing quick four bar rhymes or just general hype ups.

and in the chicago house scene in the very beginning i believe it was the same. Thats why in that doco about the origins of dance music they interviewed those guys who said they just looped a lame four bar rap they did and the track went on to be a classic

Probably right actually, the only time i can recall it is festivals.

So essentially mcs stay out of dance music!
