Jaytee Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Just wondering.Did you actually have proper lessons / tutorials? Did you learn from observing other DJ's?Did you learn from mucking around with the equipment etc.Did you learn from reading books / watching video tutorials?Of course you'll learn from most of those ways, but which one did you mostly learn from?So far I've been going through video tutorials and observing techniques in video mixes and learning a bit here and there on this forum Wazza might show me a few techniques sometime... I hope. Quote
CBG Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 I started properly mixing end of 06, on Virtual DJ, then moved onto analogue mixing on CD players end of 08 and completed a 12 week course mid way through this year to get a solid base of knowledge I hadnt allready learnt myself and to get info from pro DJs.Never really took in a lot of info from videos. Allthough ellaskins is allright on youtube.I just learnt through experience. Took a long time to get to where I am today. Quote

Genetic Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 practical side was self taught, the concepts and thoery of it was learn't from reading Quote
Andrez Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 No lessons. We were putting on IF? gigs in Melbourne and Sydney in the '90s where we had lots of live electronic acts (Voiteck, Zen Paradox, Frontside, Honeysmack, Son Of Zev, etc) playing, and someone had to fill in the silent gaps between their sets. That was me since I didn't have to pay myself. Best break I ever gave... myself. Quote
DjDennis Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I started back in 1977using Belt driven turntables and cassette decksalso reel to reelthen moved up from that ever sinceyou never stop learningwhen training for say weddings/parties it was with someone I would be a trainee (no pay) and use to do it till they thought you can do it on your ownthen you get paidbut most are self taughtall licences to be required or you can get into plenty of trouble (you get caught they take everything to do with copyright you have - including going to your house)so you cant just learn it in one day it never stops and you learn all the time Quote
Shiraz200SX Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 i bought a stanton spin cycle pack, and a shitload on vinyl, and skipped most of yr 12 to practise and muck around.then got a loan and bought djm-800 + cdj-1000s just practised everything over and over...got lucky enough that someone gave me a run and showed me a few things about song selection Quote
