SolDios Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 So, now im legally 18 I was hoping to start my approach to getting into clubs. But how do I do this? where do I start? I was planning on making a new mixtape for the occasion and just sending it to promoters? Also I've been attending stuff of a local organisation called soundpond.net, heaps of dj's some of which quite big here hang out there. So I thought it would be good to build connections with them.Where should I go from here though. My ultimate long-term goal is to score a residency. Quote
andyman Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Go to clubs, make friends with promoters, promise that you'll bring 30 friends down if they give you a gig.Pretty much how it works. It's all networking, and numbers through the door at the end of the day. Quote
overit Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 As you havent been a club rat during your teens like most wannabes... U need to lrn what clubs are about 1st. Go out every night all the time to all the clubs and watch all the crowds while listening to all the DJ. (no room in this post for allthetings.jpeg)Learn when it is easy because the crowd are in the mood, learn when it is hard coz everyone is bored/grumpy. Watch other DJs success/failure rates under both circumstances. Try and gain an understanding of what effects the DJ had on the situation each time.Learn what it means for people to be high, how they get high and how they behave when they are. You dont have to get high to learn this, but it might help every once in a while. Then plan which type of clubs and which genres you really want to work with:Then:what andyman said Quote
GREMM1S Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 hang out at the club you want to play at.Listen to what the djs play at different times, what the crowd likes/doesnt likes.Meet the owners, regulars, promoters and djs, also make yourself known.Sending out mixtapes to promoters will do nothing, you have to show them you like the event and support it.Be patient and make sure you are more than ready for your first gig (even if you think you are, you arent) Quote
swixLive Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Pretty much reiterating what others have said, it has a lot to do with connections.I personally don't DJ at Venues, but a lot of my mates do, they got hooked up when they made friends with Promoters and other DJs. On occasion Promoters do advertise on their websites for adhoc DJs e.g. when a regular can't make it... but this is very very rare. Usually DJs who can't fill the night call their mates hence why you need to be friends with DJs. Quote
