SolDios Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Just wondering, and what I have noticed. So many of the local dj's im friends with on fb are constantly making events to sell tickets.I'm assuming this is to get into the good books with them.Do you have to do it though? I really hate putting any kind of force or pressure on people, and would hate to do it.But do you have to do it to get ahead in the industry? I mean surely just BEING a good dj and being excited about you're work should be enough? Quote
Cupe Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Wrong. Most entertainment industries are about whoring yourself. The 'good dj's' and big names don't whore themselves because they have enormous promotional teams that do it for them. It's a dog rape dog world and unless you're doing the raping, you're getting raped.ps. your* Quote
GREMM1S Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 It varies wildly man.My company Music People, run clubs around Sydney and put on bigger events, as such we have a partnership with future entertainment and all our djs, promoters etc have to sell future music tickets so that we are able to host stages at the festival, get big artists for official after parties and even our djs get sets at future because of this partnership.Tickets for actual events you are playing at, often you will be booked and asked if you can help sell some tickets. So long as there is no quota i don't have a problem with this, because until you have a big enough name to draw a crowd you should be bringing friends to support you to gigs. There are arsehole promoters out there who will make potential djs sell a certain amount of tickets to get a gig, it's then no coincidence these events have shit djs, as they book them on ability to sell not dj.I stand by my comment on facebook tonight,Promoters bring people to the club, djs keep them there. mattus123 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Unfortuently a club is run like a business, and if your not bringing people to the floor they dont really want to know about you. This does change however, after you've already been playing at that venue for a while. My first gig i played backroom at a club called 'Whaat Club'. I brought a shitload of people and filled teh entire room. The boss mang came up to me and said 'your doing really well, we'll definitely have you back'. I was stoaked, i thought he was saying i was playing really well... looking back at it now, he wasnt refering to my playing at all, he was referring to the packed room cause of all the friends i brought.I suppose to answer your question properly. No you don't HAVE to do all that promotion shit, but it is part of the game, and if you wanna go somewhere you just gotta play the game Quote
SolDios Posted December 12, 2012 Author Posted December 12, 2012 Ok, that sounds reasonable if you yourself where playing. I'd love to ask my friends to come and support me.What about the ones where there not actually playing at though, like futures and shit. Quote
mattus123 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 similar sort of ideaif you want the night to support you, then you need to supportfor things like future and other big events, its often just to make some cash on the side OR the example that GREMM1S said about the club promoting the event Quote
GREMM1S Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 You help your boss/promoter/club sell tickets and actively supporting the club and its ventures it will always work in your favor. Quote
