FREQ NASTY BIO 2012

Born in Fiji, raised in New Zealand and forged in the dance music revolution of London in late 90's London, FreQ Nasty started his career in 1998 on the seminal UK label Botchit & Scarper where he helped pioneer the global ‘Nu School Breaks’ movement.

After becoming one of a select few artists to appear on the front cover of UK dj bible ‘DJ Magazine’ he moved to the legendary SKINT Records in 2003 he went on to release a slew of cutting-edge records, collaborating with and remixing a diverse range of artists including Fatboy Slim, Kelis, KRS One, Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Bassnectar, and Reggae legend Junior Delgado.

In ‘04 and ‘05 FreQ toured the world with his ‘Video Nasty Experience’, an eye-melting DJ/VJ/ live MC fusion, with animation perpetrated by a hit squad of crack artists including the ‘Brother’s Mogg’ (Lord of the Rings animators), and ‘Gorrillaz’ artist Jamie Hewlett’s company Zombie Flesh Eaters.

2008 saw the release of 'Creator', his crossover collaboration with MIA producer Switch and NYC hipster Santigold, and the ground breaking FABRICLIVE 42 mix CD, which was picked as DJ Magazine's compilation of the month.

He also found time to launch the Giveback website that he co-founded with the purpose of using music to raise money for causes close to artists’ hearts including Tibetan people’s rights, safe drinking water in Ethiopia, and rebuilding homes in Haiti.

After taking 3 years out to study, 2011 saw his return to the studio chair with the release of "Dread at the Controls" on California's cutting edge bass music label, Muti Music, which launched the 17-city Monsters of Bass tour with Marty Party and Opiuo. In December, FreQ's 'Low FreQuency Pureland EP' dropped, and was selected by DJ Mag as the MoneyShot release for December, receiving a 10 out of 10 rating.

He is one of Burning Man festival’s most loved DJ’s where he has brings his signature mix of all things dub-wise and bass heavy, including 808 trap music, post-dubstep, breakbeat, and glitchhop.

2012 has seen the release of the 'Bon Merde' EP on New York's High Chai Recordings, and ‘Beethoven’s Filth’, a collaboration single by MartyParty and FreQ on his own FreQ Nasty Recordings imprint. In late October look out for the Skint Records release of "Not Givin’ In" by FreQ Nasty, a collaboration featuring Tippa Irie of the legendary Saxon Sound System and California producer Solar Lion, along with remixes from both sides of the pond.

The end of the year sees FreQ on an Australia/New Zealand tour as well as prepping upcoming studio projects with Bassnectar and live-looping Beatbox supremo DubFX.

FreQ’s latest side projects to tour the festival scene are the Dub Kirtan All Stars, a live 9 piece band of singers and musicians led by the beats and bass of FreQ Nasty and David Starfire. He also presents a series of talks given with yoga teacher Claire Thompson called ‘The Yoga of Bass’, both of which seek to open up the Yoga tradition to underground dance music club audiences focussing on the ecstatic dancefloor experience.

Culture shock:

It was a big relief for his parents when James Pountney – aka Culture Shock – got his first sampler and sequencer and started producing drum and bass. At last, it took him away from dismantling electrical appliances to find out how they worked, and distracted him from improvising with violin, Clarinet or drums - that to his own account he used to play ‘at mediocre level’.

James was brought up in a musical household with both parents involved with opera, and always showed a healthy curiosity about music, listening to anything from Jazz to house. He got hooked on drum and bass at around 10, when he first heard the music in 1996 on pirate radios. To his own words, ‘it sounded totally alien’ and he was blown away. He started reading music technology magazines, managed to set up a basic studio and started experimenting.

James’ first release happened thanks to his father, who often worked with Dom (of Dom & Roland’s fame) dad. The result was the 2004 ‘Vega EP’ on Moving Shadow. It was well received but unfortunately the seminal label stopped releasing music and it was another two years before James found another home with the legendary Ram Records.

Impressed by the production skills displayed on the Vega EP, Andy C followed the progress of the young producer and ended up signing him to his label, with the first track ‘The Bypass’ – one of Optical’s favourite tunes - appearing on 2006’s Dimension EP and getting tongues wagging on the scene.

James was then given the chance to make his own EP, and ‘the third stage’ was released in summer 2007. It included the suave ‘Rework’, produced in partnership with the Brookes Brothers, and a brilliant electro-breaks track ‘Asteroids’ that fits well with James’ open approach to music: ‘I’ve been into drum and bass for a long, long time – he recently told Knowlede magazine - That is great but it’s all about bringing in influences from elsewhere. I am really into all electronic music and I listen to a lot of techno and electro’.

With signing Culture shock to its prestigious stable, Ram are nurturing yet another talent destined to expend the boundaries of the scene.
