Lurk6r Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Hey guys, I need some advice.Somehow, nfi how, I'm going to be playing second in tonights dj competition. Theres just me and one other guy. We each have 30 min sets.Obviously I don't know what hes going to play, but I know hes into tech and bangers. So my question is.Without know how hard hes going to finish and/or if the crowd is digging it.Should I play to start by "resetting" the crowd with a track that a slow but massive build up? Maybe also have a vocal drop as well? Quote
OxyKon Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 If he finishes with a banger I would keep it goin like that for a few then maybe drop it off to something softer then after a while bring it back up again Quote
Lurk6r Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 I was planning on mixing into this, letting it play for a min. Then as it goes quiet at the 1min mark, play vocal drop ("You are now in the mix with Dj VLAD [echo] VLAd VLad Vlad vlad [echo]) so the echo fades right as the vocals starts fading in.I'm going in on the premise the guy is dick and might end on something that is difficult to mix, eg dubstep, in which case I could just echo it out and build up.The other thing is I want to make it very clear that his set has finished and mine has begun. overit Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 The other thing is I want to make it very clear that his set has finished and mine has begun.I think this is essential so: DO something terrible to his last song. eg rewind, or if it's cdjs use stop and wind down effect by having the brake speed on max.Even better ask the promoter/judge to do it and introduce you like they would at a big comp. Then start fresh with something huge. Lurk6r Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 When you say huge, do you think I should build it up for 5 mine over 2 songs. Or go hard straight head. I know im overthinking this. But on one had they may lose energy if i build up slow. On the other hand, release without building tension doesn't mean much Quote
overit Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I mean huge as in hits 'em hard right away. Let 'em know you mean business with a huge drop or sumthin... Then maybe do a big build up track 2 or 3 songs in to really start your journey by DJ.You can't overthink competitions. In my experience it is only when you have overthought everything beforehand that you can let it all go and rock it in the moment. Quote

overit Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 BACKSPIN ALL THE THINGS!!!!!!LOL... sesuj pose optional, but yer, at swapover when you want to be noticed I think backspin/rewind is allowed Quote
mattus123 Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 i tihnk overit is on the moneyif its a comp, your not ther toprovide seemless entertainment for the crowd (your are meant to do that too i suppose), u need everyone to know exactly when your mix startsi think it would be acceptable to do a power down, and as the out going track is 'powering down' start the incoming track at the end of the break down so there that there isnt too much breakdown at the start of your set. Id probs go with someone big that evenyone knows, maybe toulouse or atom? Quote
GREMM1S Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Echo/back spin out his last track.Few bars of silence or whitenoise then a big vocal/synth build up or use your vlad voiceover in the silence. Quote
Lurk6r Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Forgot to load the VoiceOver on my USB. It was a super comercial crowd. Didnt make it through, a fair amount of people came up and started talking to me about it throughtout the night. Next up, coco jambo tonight Quote

Next up, coco jambo tonightJust got a message from the promoter after I sent a courtesy thank you txt. They were really happy with my mix and it was extremely close. Also they were very impressed with the posters and general effort/creativity getting people on my list (aka stalking last weeks photos and msging everybody that was tagged at the club). I guess at the end of the day you got to be good at what you do and respect everybody that works at the venue. Quote

Lurk6r Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 Creepy yes, but it's more or less the same way Facebook advertising functions. I just had to make the most of the resources I could access. Lurk6rs gonna Lurk6 Quote
