Hobberz Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 This article is taken from Kaskades blog, I know there was a thread about making mashups, edits and remixes etc without having the original artists permission. Here are some of Kaskades thoughts on the subject.http://thisisadynasty.tumblr.com/post/3 ... oliticking Quote

GREMM1S Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 It is a good way to look at it for sure, my opinion is that if i am not making financial gains from other peoples work then it should be fine. Quote

mattus123 Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 good read and completely agreeapparently the SHM lads dont think so, i remeber there being a fallout between them and Hardwell, cause hardwell used one of their tracks in a mashup for a free download Quote

Here are some of Kaskades thoughts on the subject.http://thisisadynasty.tumblr.com/post/3 ... olitickingMind opened.....awesome read, also the mashup is awesome! hahaha, anyways, this is how i have always thought of mashups, in all honesty, as long as you aren't looking to gain any financial monies for the individual song i guess you can't really get sued, what are you getting sued for? the money you have earnt from selling the song? i'm not selling it!a really good point was raised there, this has achally made me wanna start doing mashup's again Quote
overit Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 TBH I'm still not 100% decided on this issue. Both sides of the discussion seem righteous:1) Doing mashups for the love of the music and coz you want to share the love is what DJS are supposed to do. It promotes the original artist, gives pleasure to the listener and encourages newbies to get involved making music and DJing. If no money is being earned and you show love for the original then where's the problem?2) Doing mashups thieves intellectual copyright from the original artist, can be used to heavily promote a new artist without paying a penny, and can encourage amateur whales to fill the internet with rubbish.Personally I think this is one of those issues that cannot have a definitive answer. Each individual mashup/remix/re-edit needs assessing individually to see if its fair or not. But as we have no global music judiciary I guess we have to keep ourselves governing ourselves.Thank Fuck. Quote
CapFive Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 i see what you mean overit but put it this way, should an artist sue when a DJ uses their song in a trainreck of a DJ set? if that was the Case I'm sure LMFAO would have their fair share of lawsuit cases LOL! technically all we are doing is a mini mix thats been presessionised (sequenced if you will) So I think legally speaking even if it does get the DJ a claim to fame, really in my eyes, they would only be getting there if they did it right, which is the same reason they would get noticed for being a good DJ, its like saying artists should sue because DJ's are getting popular off their songs from doing live sets... Most really good DJ's get a name off their track selection, I remember an old skool sort of semi amateur DJ steve play used to source the smoothest house remixes, and people loved his selection, but he got popular from the remixes he found.I say power to the masses, DJ's will always be messing around with songs, its what we do, its why we love DJing, because we make it sound our way that we want it to, we aren't claiming that its our own genuine sound, and i sure as well don't want any money for it Quote
overit Posted September 22, 2012 Posted September 22, 2012 yer cap5, that's what i said too:Each individual mashup/remix/re-edit needs assessing individually to see if its fair or not. Quote
