Jaytee
Hey,I'm extremely interested in learning how to DJ, I've watched a load of videos on how to DJ but I haven't actually tried out myself. It's something I'm pretty keen to learn about and get involved in.Just wondering if there's anyone in Brisbane interested in showing me a few tips and tricks to it, maybe some lessons. I'm trying to buy my own simple set up (CDJ-400 x 2 + DJM-400 mixer) to begin with. But I'm pretty much next to broke and still trying to persuade my parents to loan out money to me. I have done heaps of research and found out good deals valuing the set around around $2150.But hey if anyone is interested in showing me their gear I'll be extremely interested in finding out. I'm mainlny interested as a hobby at home, but also don't mind earning some extra dollars at parties and events, maybe in the future go into Audio Production. Above-DiabloTraxx
dude the first thing i tell budding djs is dont spend shit loads of money on new gear cos u may end up not liking it and u have spent all the dosh for nothing... get some 2nd hand gear first... learn on real turntables not cdjs.. im not knocking cdjs but they arent true to learning the art and they are much cheaper to buy at the moment. go for a set of sl1200's and a 2 channel mixer.. u can probably pick up a set for 500 these days... and some 2nd hand records to get ya started!!if u need any help drop me a msg
CBG
Dude, CDJ 400xDJM400 is not considered simple. Your looking at $2000 worth of gear there.Yeah,do what ABT said, buy second hand, it'll be fine. You dont have to learn on decks, it would help, but in this day and age your nearly a dying bread who's willing to learn on CD players! let alone turntables .I think Tomy is from QLD. Wherebouts do you live?Well I've done alot of research and I found out that the CDJ-400's are very good for begineers and amateurs. (I also want to learn scratching - which the CDJ 200 doesn't provide). If I get good enough I can drop by my friends parties and events and earn some $$$.I've been using Virtual DJ for about about a year now so it's definitely something I'm pretty passionate about. Although computer mixing (virtual DJ) imo is alot harder because you can only do one thing at a time using the mouse and there are limited options from using hotkeys.I'm also interested in going into music production as a side hobby after I learn how to DJ.I haven't had any real lessons or anything, just observing Youtube videos of other DJ's and their techniques. Jaytee
i dont have my gear yet. but i dont think just using VDJ is as fun as using actual hardware It is fun, but you can pull off much better mixes with the equipment I'm planning to pair it with my equipment but I am guilty of using the sync button It's so hard to beat match using a mouse haha

BarsTards
If you want to know about Deck DJing all you need to do is google the manuals for all DJ decks and software and learn about the main functions from those various manuals. If you learn this way, you'll learn the two different ways of using the Repeating/Cue and Cued/Play functions as well as the difference between Twin deck CD players and CDJ units. Once you've learn't this you'll know how to use any deck and you'll instantly understand manual DJing on software just from either looking at it or looking at the keyboard shortcuts for whatever software. How to be a REAL DJWhen you google the various manuals fucus your search on these main functions and define their functions and how to use them properly:Cue-Point mixing. (define it)Repeating/Cue and Cueing.(The two ways of using the Repeating/Cue are this and this)Cued/Play- If you know the two ways of executing the Cued/Play functions you could be a Cue-Point mixing/tricking master.(The two ways of using the Cued/Play functions are this and this)Hot-Cues- Some DJs (if they're LAME) don't know how to manually Cued/Play properly and end up using the Hot-Cue functions on their DJ decks. Using Hot-Cues is ok if you're just a learner, but if you want to be a REAL DJ master then master the Cued/Play function and have instant access to all of saved Cues within a song and not just the two or three Cue-Points when you use the Hot-Cue function.(To use Hot-Cues I do this)Auto-Cue.(To use the Auto-Cue function I do this)Beat-Stepping. (To beat step I press this button)ie: http://www.pcdj.com/index.php/support/updatesYou'll learn allot just from reading these various manuals on this PCDJ page, just focus on what I've highlighted (bold) above and categorise your information. In: http://pcdj.com/index.php/dex/dex-downloads/under "Using Controllers with PCDJ DEX" just look at the various manuals and if your not a MORON within a day you should have a good understanding of the main functions that I've highlighted above. For example http://pcdj.com/Manuals/DEX_DN-HC4500_Mapping.pdf states (Cut and Pasted) that:General UseThe way the Play/Pause and Cue buttons work depend on the cue mode configuration in PCDJ DEX. (Menu, Options, General) -In CDJ Mode: Play/Pause will start or stop playback. The cue point will not be affected. Cue will return the position to the current cue point when the song was playing. When the song is not playing and the song is at the current cue point, playback will start for as long as you hold the cue button. When you release the cue button, the position will return to the cue point. When the song is not at the cue point, the cue point position will be changed. -In PCDJ DEX mode: Play/Pause will start or stop playback. When playback is stopped, the cue point is set to that position. Cue will return the position to the cue point and stop playback. When pressing cue again the position will be set to the start of the song. The Sync button will adjust the pitch to match the other decks' bpm. Holding the button for more than a second will reset the pitch to 0%. The Jog Mode button switches between scratch mode, pitch bend mode and track browsing mode for the jog wheel. The Pitch/Key button will toggle tempocontrol on or off. When you hold the button pressed for 1 second, the pitch range can be adjusted by turning the parameter knob. The Fast Search buttons can be used to seek forward or backwards in the current song. The Pitch Bend buttons will temporarily bend the pitch up or down. Pressing the Time button will switch between Elapsed and Remaining time display, and will also temporarily show the track length in the display. Press the Cont/Single button for 1 second to switch the display between pitch and bpm display. There is so much information in the above Cut and Pasted paragraph its not funny. DJing isn't rocket science, its like a game and the aim of the game is to figure it out  on your own and be a REAL DJ that manually DJs while monitoring their mix with headphones on a mixer and not that automixing crap.If you like to automatic DJ (automix) cause its easier for you, you may as well be using that Mixmeister software and just stand there pretending to be so cool while the software does everything automatically for you.regards,John Myatt

Jaytee
if reading manuals was all you had to do to learn somthing youve never done before id be both a commercial pilot and a pornstar lol. You can learn from manuals, but not much - you need real life examples. It's better learning visually from observations than reading pages of text and then getting everything wrong.
