L33nsta Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Hey,Whats the going rate for travel charges.I have come up with this at the momentFirst 25kms free. Then $1 per km after that.eg Suburb 1 - 25kms one way. No Chargeeg Suburb 2 - 45kms one way. Charge of $40. eg ((45*2)-(25*2))*1=$40I am not sure if this is fair/too expensive. Anyone else got any ideas? Quote
Lurk6r Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Unless your a well known Dj in high demand, don't do travel charges. Bump up your regular price by $10 and state the maximum area your willing to serivce. Quote
SourceRaver Posted August 17, 2012 Posted August 17, 2012 Too complicated for the average punter. Just add an extra surcharge for anything over a certain distance. Quote
GREMM1S Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Just make it a bit higher if you have travel far or only do local gigs Quote
SolDios Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 Basicly I have a thing that there's a $30 surcharge if you live more than an hour out Quote
L33nsta Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 At $30 have you calculated what it costs to run your vehicle more that 200kms. Eg, fuel, servicing, tyres. And at then your getting nothing for your time spent traveling. Quote
SolDios Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 It's just an estimate, but anymore and it will become abit unreasonable.a gig is better than not having a gig! Quote
Lurk6r Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 But no gig is better than a shit gig. Stingy people tend to be the most demanding. Quote
Funky_Steve Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I used to charge an extra $50 per hour travelling time to the gig if it's outside the local area. Being based in Canberra I've done the odd job up in the NSW Snowfields which is 2 hours away, so I charge an extra $100. May have to review (upward) this next time I'm asked to quote for such a gig. AlexJ Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 get much work in canberra steve?also, i charge 50c p/km that generally works out well. im generally not looking to make a profit on travel costs. normally will tell people im more than happy to do a gig alittle further away if they will pay for my travel fees Quote
robbo Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 some of the booking agencies in NT, WA and SA do the following for Djs, bands etc nowFirst 25kms free. Then $2 per km after that.eg Suburb 1 - 25kms one way. No Chargeeg Suburb 2 - 45kms one way. Charge of $40. eg ((45*2)-(25*2))*1=$40if the town is say 1200km away they charge that as a rate $1200.00 as travel and the normal cost for showsthat's what I have found out of late Quote
AlexJ Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 $2 a km seems too much too me. but depends on the gear you have. Quote
L33nsta Posted August 24, 2012 Author Posted August 24, 2012 Guys when i said $2 a km I allowed for the 1 km to get there and the 1 km to return.I was speaking to a colleage tonight and we googled "business charge per km australia" and came up with a few interesting results:http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/conte ... /33874.htmFor a large car the ATO allows you to claim back 75 Cents per km.We all know the ATO, they don't give you back something for nothing.http://www.racq.com.au/motoring/cars/ca ... ning_costsThis site shows the total cost including loans etc. Worth a read. Quote
robbo Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 As most if they charge $2 a km its one way only(this way it wont scare the client) or if the town is 235km away tell them thats your travel charge from Post office to post office thats how the roads dept does it... plus you paying 1.55c a litre for city wait till you get to a town that charges $1.80c or more for petrol!and its not about claiming tax dollars (you can do that well after the function)but you have no idea how to charge for travel - this is what its all about not tax, not wages its travelgo do courier work for 3months and then try and get travel charges from thatthe company wouldnt even employ you....you have to work it all out way before hand if its too high you will be toldif its too low you lose money - when you have sorted out the money (or ring other local dj's you dont know to ask if they would do a show say 300km away in (said town) and you want a rough price on show cost and travel charges, then you might with luck work it out)but its all on how you want too do it all Quote
GREMM1S Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 All that per km stuff is silly an hr away + 20 or so, 2/3 hours 50 bucks etc etc Quote
robbo Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 well most of the Booking agencies do it that wayso if they do it why not follow suityou can make more $$ that wayI know works for other jobs too Quote
GREMM1S Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Seems a bit much though? Granted ive never down house parties other than being asked by friends Quote
robbo Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 thats why I said, like I did a few times, Call a few up and ask how much it would cost (make fake parties)see what they would charge for travel and then you can get a rough idea.. Quote
GREMM1S Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Depends if you are worried about your own price being too high, because agencies and what not would be charging top dollar Quote
L33nsta Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 Guys I have put my travel charges on my website if anyone is interested. If it avoids me getting any functions that are more than an hours drive away, then that may not be such a bad thing.http://www.djdave.com.au/index.php/pricingI made up a script in excel which takes a list of the suburbs and the distances, rounds the costs for each suburb to the nearest $10 value. Then it sorts it out into the same table layout as you see.I can then copy the html from excel into my website or paste a copy of the excel spreadsheet directly into my Joomla website backend. If anyone wants a copy of the excel spreadsheet let me know.
