SnatchMD Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 hey everyone,I haven't grown up in melbourne so the clubbing world here is a little bit unknown to me, in adelaide I prob knew where to start and had connections to get a start but here I'm not so sure...I've been djing and producing for 8 years now and really want to get a gig! Ive done plenty of private parties and every spare minute I get is spent on mixing/producing.I would also appreciate any feedback on my mixes tooCheersSnatchMDhttp://Www.facebook.com/snatchmd Quote
LabRat Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 same deal as if you were in adelaide dude - connections. go start meeting people and probably suggest you'll play your first hour free too. Quote
Cupe Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 If you want feedback on your mixes post them up in their own threads chief Quote
SnatchMD Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 So is there a best time to go in, I'm guessing while the place is pumping won't be much good...? I have business cards with my Facebook site and ph number on, is it better to ask to talk to the promoter and pass that to them or actually give CDs?Ok I'll post some of my mixes up at some stage when I get some more time:) cheers, bit of a forum noob too to be honest!SnatchMDWww.facebook.com/snatchmd Quote
Mitch Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I'd be burning a cd with a decent length mix on it, relative to the set your looking at getting (trying to land an hour set, make an hour mixtape). I'd also try and work through a connection to get to the manager, don't just walk in give them your mixtape and walk out. Coz as much as your mixtape might be awesome, getting gigs in any town is about who you know, not how good you are Quote
SnatchMD Posted July 24, 2012 Author Posted July 24, 2012 So just giving a business card with my facebook site and phone number on is no good..? Cd is better yeah?Should I just start anywhere or are smaller places more likely to give a newbie a go? Quote
andyman Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 The Melbourne scene is very clicky and can be hard to break in to.Some venues wont book you unless you can guarantee 30 people every week, and others wont book you unless you're an established name of the scene.Basically, you may have to sell your soul to get a gig. That being said, I'll check out your mixes at some stage today and point you in the direction of some venues that would be suited to your style. What genres do you primarily play? Quote
Cupe Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Remember that at this stage it's more of a popularity contest. People don't want to listen to a 30 minute mix, while checking whether you're phrasing is decent and your track selection has flow blah blah blahYou want to wow, and impress in a small space of time. andyman Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 To get you started, Killing Time on Chapel Street do open decks every Thursday night. They play deep house, so nothing over 120bpm usually. ttp://www.killingtimebar.blogspot.comAnd I saw someting advertised that "I Know A Place" in Fitzroy has open decks this coming Sunday.Never been before, but from what I understand they have 7 x 1 hour spots available.Contact the dude on 0415 030 974. Sorry that's all the info I have, it's from another forum that we don't like to speak of.Good luck! Quote

I was talking to a promoter recently and I asked to meet him but all he wanted from me was a demo. Some guys are like that and other guys are pretty open for a chat. You can get to know some good people and become mates from it all too. But just be friendly and don't try prove yourself too much by the chit chat. I've never been one to particularly be a fan of talking yourself up. I prefer to see it in action but thats how I think. Try the open deck nights and enter DJ comps when they come up Quote
GREMM1S Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Target a particular genre or scene you want to play in, then find out the clubs that have what you want, go to the events and then get to know the promoters, you would be surprised how well old fashioned shaking of hands and introducing yourself can help. SnatchMD Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 would have for sure but i'm in adelaide that weekend... keep me posted on any others too tho, very interested in networking! cheers:) Quote
mattus123 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 i imagine melbourne would be similar to sydfind a club you think you would be interested in playing at, go down there often and start becoming a familiar face. slowly get to meet the promoters, and they'll be able to point u in the direction of who to talk to about getting gigs.Ive found that contacting a promoter isn't too helpful, unless they are quite high up on hte food chain (which they often arent). Alot of the promoters here in syd just put shit up on facebook and rock up to the club all the time, they dont actually have much pull with the higher ups though (obviously not all promoters, but some) Quote
GriffinAlliance Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 what clubs did you play at in adelaide? Quote
