Dells competitor to the Macbook Pro - XPS 15z
awesome88 replied to awesome88's topic in Computer Corner
my mrs got a dell for her desktop. Had it since 06, and hasn't had a problem at all so far. Her brother is a programming manager at Symantec (Norton anti-virus etc.) and rekons they are good. -
Taken from SMH Dell has thrown down the gauntlet to Apple's MacBook Pro with a new ultra-portable laptop that has just as much grunt but with a price tag that's $700 lower than Apple's offering. The 15.6-inch XPS 15z, which starts at $1399, will be available through Dell's website today. The laptop is 24.68mm thin, has an anodised aluminium chassis and weighs 2.5kg. By comparison, the 15-inch MacBook Pro models sell for $2099 or $2499, depending on the configuration. The MacBook Pro weighs about the same as the XPS 15z and is almost exactly the same thickness. It also uses the same Intel Core i5 and i7 chips, boasts a similar latch-less design and offers a large trackpad. Rainer Noack, head of Dell Australia's consumer division, went as far as saying that compared side-by-side with any competing laptop, including the MacBook Pro, the XPS 15z would "win hands down". He said the XPS 15z was the only 15-inch laptop that came standard with a 1080p full HD display and that it was 50 per cent brighter than an average laptop. It also comes stock standard with up to 8GB of memory and up to 750GB of hard disk space. But while the price is low compared to competitors on the Australian market, the XPS 15z has received a significant markup in Australia considering it retails in the US for $US999. Noack justified this discrepancy by saying that the US model may offer slightly different specs and the Australian price included extras such as taxes and on-site support from Gizmo. While the specs place it in the range of the MacBook Pro, the $1399 price is comparable to the MacBook Air, which has a smaller 13-inch screen (there's also an 11-inch model) but is slightly thinner at 17mm. Compared to the regular 13.3-inch MacBook, which is $200 cheaper, the XPS 15z is thinner (24.68mm vs 27.4mm) despite offering the extra screen real estate and faster specs. Also in the mix is Samsung's 13-inch Series 9 laptop, which has won plaudits for its slick design and thin chassis (16.3mm) but has been criticised for its $2499 price tag. Lenovo's ThinkPad X1, which also has a 13-inch screen, is another key competitor but primarily targets business uses and focuses on durability with features such as strong Gorrilla Glass and a water resistant, magnesium chassis. The X1, which went on sale last week starting at $1959, weighs 1.7kg and is about 17mm thin. Dell said the XPS 15z would be the first in a series of thin Inspiron- and XPS-branded products targeting mobile warriors, students and small business owners. It would not confirm whether a 13-inch version was in the works. Other noteworthy features of the XPS 15z include a backlit keyboard, eights hours of battery life, USB 3.0, a built-in DVD burner and Nvidia Optimus graphics. Dell said the XPS 15z owed parts of its design to the Adamo laptop, Dell's sleek ultra-portable that previously attempted to take on the MacBook Air. The product was quietly dropped after its $3699 price tag was universally panned. Noack said Adamo pushed the boundaries in terms of design but the mission with the XPS 15z was to "take what was great about Adamo ... and combine it with the grunt of the XPS brand". Unlike Adamo, the XPS 15z's $1399 price will likely be far more palatable when up against the MacBook Air, which sells for $1199-$1949.

what Gandy said. As much as i am all for controllers, the stigma around them still exists, and whether people like them or not, it's just the way the world works at the moment.... who knows what it'll be like in the future. You have to know how people think, and even though a controller and laptop can do everything cdj's and a mixer can do plus more.... it is just how people think. If you want to move into clubs, get cdjs and a mixer
-
that was the problem when i had the S4, but obviously you would make sure it had zero issues before you took it out. but like i said.... you could keep your gear in top notch condition, but they have no idea of that.... they know what their gear is like and can rely on it. I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem once they saw the gear was fine etc. there is also still a bit of a stigma about controllers.... so it might be a bit harder to get into the club scene with it, but once you get a reputation, should be fine. At the end of the day, you won't know until you try. If you want the safe option, go for cdjs + mixer + a DVS. But if you wanna go controller, by all means go for it, at least it's something different, and you know i'm all for them

+1 for what Eggs said, but we are both in Sydney, and i remember a few people in other states saying they have only seen djs using just cdj's/turntables and a mixer. But yea, here in sydney i ALWAYS see cdj's + laptop with serato or traktor. I think it really depends if they are adament on you using their gear or not. Although your gear might be better, the owner will KNOW the quality of their gear, they don't KNOW the quality of yours. Last thing they want is for your gear to shit itself and you not be able to play on their gear. Whether it's true or not, at first, you are an unknown to them. I'm sure Karma plays out with his S4 though.

yea, it's a sick track... dunno if it's just my copy, but it sounds fairly poor quality. I might just have to find another version, or it might be meant to be like that lol
