OK, so I admit this is a fairly nooby question... Is there a previous post or can someone point me in the right direction to somewhere I will find some definitions etc explaining the different genres of music? What makes them different, distinctive etc.. Thanks
-
Thanks guys! Out of interest, where you playing at?

OK, so here it comes....I am gay, well, lesbian, but generally have been at the same clubs as the boys for the last 13 years...Here's a list of artists I know get played heaps at the clubs and on floats etc at Mardi Gras... Cher, Celine Dion, Steps, Darren Hayes, Mika, Sugababes, Bonnie Tyler, Bette Midler, Cyndi Lauper, Dolly Parton...Then the usual poppy top 40 artists like Katy Perry, Britney, Christina Aguilira etc... Mardi Gras parties are fucking awesome, I think even though you will be in the company of a massive group of homos you will have a good night, they do like to party! Especially on their night of nights!!

I spent a bit, could have easily spent a shite load more!! Personally, for me, I am only newish to the whole DJ scene so my mixing skills are still in need of improvement, so I try to do a bit of a mix of both...Sometimes gets a bit hard to mix songs like YMCA into Black Eyed Peas...Also depends on your gig

My set up from a Disco themed 50th I did on the weekend... Pretty cruddy pics, took them on my iPhone..

Can someone please tell me how to do it? Thanks

These are most the important songs imo, that's all the Bride cares about, that her songs she has spent 6 months discussing with all her friends are played at the right times. It's mainly the Bride you have to keep happy, unless you get some new age sensitive guy...Easist bit is, the Bride should tell you what she wants played at these times... My tips for toilet break songs... - A Jivebunny mix for the oldies - Definately grease megamix And your typical crowd pleasers that everyone can dance to - Nutbush, Bus stop etc...cheesy but they love it! Hope it all goes well!

I just downloaded mixmeister for free to get a rough idea of the BPM of my digital collection. Lets you sort by a few different filters, including BPM. I found it handy. I had a quick look at Rekordbox, is it free too?

Did you cart that chair around too?

At the moment I have mine wrapped individually in some flanelette pillowcases and transport them in a wheeled suitcase. Clearly not the most professional approach but at least they are sort of protected in transit. I dont have the cash to buy the fancy roadcases etc so was jst wondering how you guys get your lighting to and from gigs? Any ideas?
-
That looks nice and neat! I been trying to draw up a few ideas for my gear, my back kills after a few hours bending over a normal height table!
-
Thanks heaps!! Thats awesome!
-
It does look pretty sick though! Gotta give credit to him/her!

This didn't really fit into the music categories so I have put it here as its a fairly noobish question... Dinner Music? I have been asked to play a corporate dinner and need to play appropriate music for approx 90 mins. I have been looking at a bit of Jazzy / Blues kind of stuff but just thought I would throw it out to the experienced guys for some suggestions? Thanks, dinner music not really my thing!

I was where you are about 18 months ago. I started doing a few jobs for a company to get my experience up. I was lucky in that he paid me fairly well and let me use his equipment. It doesn't hurt to phone through some names in the yellow pages. Tell them you are new, looking to learn. You never know unless you ask! Practice as much as you can and tell everyone what you are doing. Everyone wants music at their event, tell them will do the djing for free if they hire you some gear? Just have a go I reckon! Good luck!
