Has anyone used one of these systems? Any reviews or feedback?
-
Don't forget your public liability insurance as well. Some venue managers will ask for this before they let you in the door. Oh, and don't use the name Funky Steve, it's taken! lol

Agreed! A good DJ knows how to control the mood and energy of a party. They can read the crowd and change the music to suit the majority of the people, not the select few that "think" they know what everyone else want's to hear (ie their own fav tunes). How many people come away from an iPod party saying "wasn't the music great", whereas as a DJ that should be your goal for the night.

Some of you guys actually need to do a wedding or two before you comment on them. There is a hell of a lot more involved in a wedding then putting on a nice shirt and playing "party music" to an older crowd. I know of some professional outfits who charge and get over $1000 for a wedding. These guys are truly professional and everything (I mean everything) is taken into account and ensures what is probably the biggest day of the bridal couple goes without a hiccup. For example, how many of you have back up amps or head units that you take to a gig if your main ones pack it in half way through the night? How many have all your equipment and leads fully tested and certified by an electrician? How many of you have full insurance including public liability cover? I could go on, but I won't. But just like the professional club DJ that walks into a club, plays their 1 hour set and walks out with a pocket full of money, these guys are also professionals and experts in their field. Just sayin'

Me thinks Lurk's attitude is better suited to the "other" DJ forum that is full of elitist, know-it-alls.

Beats by dr.dre Over-ear headphones for DJing?
Funky_Steve replied to Jarrah's topic in Accessories etc.
Just a couple of things about the Beats. If you are looking for a pair to DJ with, it's the Pro model you want, not the Studio. Pro has a swivel cup and aluminium frame. Also, if you're looking at buying them from anywhere but an authorised dealer (ie from eBay or online) beware as there are heaps of fakes on the market. The Pro's retail for around $700!!! so a pair on eBay for around $300 sounds too good to be true and probably is. :-) -
Tell the client that you can not do Saturday as you have another booking already but see if you can find another DJ to do the gig for him and try to get a spotters fee for it from the other DJ. Then go do the sit-in gig and keep both parties happy. You might still get referals from the client if you have treated him in a professional manner and he is happy with the replacement DJ you arranged for him.

Nutbush or BusStop are classic loo break songs I've used for years. You could also look at (depending on the function and time of night) Don McLean - American Pie or a Jive Bunny Megamix. :-)

yeah, been pre-occupied of late. Hope to visit the forum more often. :-)

^^djim, yes all mobile DJs should have their own PL insurance and some venues require proof before letting you in. I'm pretty sure that all electrical gear including power leads should be tested and certified too, but I haven't seen this policed so much yet.

Check with the customer first, but see if top 40, rock, r&b, classic party tracks, etc are Ok to play as well. Then play them in sets of 3 or 4 tracks from each genre, starting with the slower track first and building up to the faster track. Then work out the coolest way to drop the tempo agan for the genre change.

Go away for awhile and the list seems to have totally changed. IMO the original order should have been maintained as that was part of the game. BTW 39. Spin me Right Round (like a record) is by Dead or Alive, not Billy Idol. :-)

Yeah, was a great night. Agreed about Dada Life. Best set on the Terrace stage all night. Martin Solveig started a bit slow in the Arena but totally kicked arse later in his set. Skrillex was pretty full on from the start. And Deadmau5 just showed the future of DJ sets. Graphics were amazing as well as the guest singer, stage setup, etc. I heard a couple of the official photographers were a bit pissed off because Dead didn't allow any of them on stage or backstage during his performance. After seeing his show I can understand why. Whole thing was epic. But drinks were a ripoff and food was almost non-existent. One of the DJs cancelled in the Terrace stage but no announcement was made which would have pissed of some of the fans.

Even cheaper, get a cardboard box, draw eyes and a mouth on it and go as one of the DJs from Mars.

Hey, where did you get these pics of MY laptop from?? lol
-
I know it's been mentioned elsewhere, but this unit from Numark doesn't need a computer. Just plug in your amp & speakers and away you go. https://www.storedj.com.au/products/NUM-HDMIX Ugly but effective and a relatively cheap option.

Just bought myself a Toshiba Dynadock docking station for my new lappy. Better than most docking stations which fit a specific brand or model, this one only needs a single usb port to run all your peripherals - monitor, printers, modem/router, keyboard, external HD, etc, etc. Also about to pick up MS Office Pro 2010 for $15!! Got to love Govy Volume agreements.

Welcome to the forum fellow Canberran. Needs to be more of us on here.

Some of us actually remember these. lol Is that showing my age??

too late. i got it way cheaper than I thought I would so i think I might buy some xd53s and a cd wallet as well. So how much did you get the Macbook Pro for? Looking at getting one myself. Just picked up a new Toshiba lappy for under $1k with extended warranty and an external HD. Needed it urgently as my home desktop died, my old lappy was way too sloow and I was abouut to go interstate for a week.

As mentioned previously there are CDs they released especially for the Mardi Gras years ago. I've got a few somewhere and will try to dig them up. Other great tracks include (check some out on, may be on youtube) Male Stripper Boom Boom Boom (let's go back to my room) Life at the Outpost (Skatt Bros) I'm too sexy Agree with Rhetski, I Believe (Cher) 9 to 5 (Dolly Parton) also try Sheena Easton Studio 54 Dannii Monigue D:Ream All i can think of atm. Hope it helps

And that's why I've always had station wagons. Even had a little Lancer wagon that was great to carry all my gear. Best part was it didin't have wheel wells protruding into the cabin. Completely flat floor across the whole width of the cargo area.

Creating a free website and promoting yourself...
Funky_Steve replied to SourceRaver's topic in DJ Headquarters
This is really useful as I've just got myself a new domain name and am looking at setting up a proper site. Great work. -
It depends on the function but there is no need to beatmix at the majority of them. What is important is the music selection as you could have a packed dancefloor one minute and an empty one the next. The skill is being able to read the crowd as well as have the experience of knowing what just works. And as for using the Nightlife system, whenever I've used it has usually been in an pub/club environment and that has included beatmixing.
