  1. Or one that really gets the DJ on their side: "Got anything besides this shit?" Like how do they expect you to reply??
  2. Everyone must have them. Things people say to you while you're playing a gig, but really shouldn't. Here's a few to get started: Play something good, something we can dance to (while the dancefloor is packed) Play something with a 'beat' (WTF???) I don't know who sings it or the name of the song. Can I sing it to you? Can you play ****. Everybody wants to hear it. I guarantee everybody will dance if you play it. I can get laid if you play it! I want to hear it next! What songs do you have? Please play it next because we are leaving soon. My Dad/brother/boyfriend owns the club, play it next. Are you the DJ? Jack and coke please. Can I DJ? Im a DJ too, you should play ***** and mix it with *****. Can you please play it again, next? Is it gonna be this sort of music all night? Can you play song no "**" on the disc "*" of MOS no "*"? Hey! Where can I buy drugs?" Can you play a song off my iPod? You got any RnB and Hip Hop ? (when playing house) & vice versa Can I look thru your music/cds/records?
  3. I hate it when someone gives you a hard time over something real trivial. Puts you in a shit mood. One night I had some PYT (Pretty Young Thing) request a song and expect me to play it right then. I said I'd try to play it soon. Came back a song later asking why I hadn't played it yet. Tried flashing her eyelids etc but it didn't work so I think she got pissed off because her girly charms didn't work for once. Asked be what my name was, so I told her. Then she asked what my full name was, which I didn't tell her. She then went and spoke to one of the bouncers (who I know) and obviously complained about me. Like a bouncer would help her?? (he later told me she asked him my name and contact number of which he gave her some bogus mobile number). Get this - then she came back and said her Dad owned the building and that I wouldn''t be working there next week. I said Fine, I need a holiday anyway (which I think pissed her off more because I wasn't shaking in my boots). Then she went off in a huff, walked out and I never saw her for the rest of the night. Amazes me this little PYTs who think they can get everything they want by batting their eyelids and giving you a fake smile. It put me in a shitty mood for awhile which really puts a downer on the night. At closing time i thought I'd mention it to the manager just in case she later contacted the club and said I was abusive or something like that. He laughter about her Dad owning the building as he knew for a fact who the owner was and that he lived up in Nth Qld.
  4. I've never had problems running a strobe and chaser off the same powerboard as the sound, but to play it safe you could use seperate boards. When I do use the one powerboard, I usually plug the amp and the console into the sockets closest to the incoming lead. Not sure if this makes any difference but it's just been standard operations for me.
  5. Tried it a few more times and came up with: DJ Cool Lickz DJ Heartless Lickz DJ Broken Lickz DJ Pulsating Lickz I think I like the first one the best.
  6. Assume you're talking about type of console that houses a dual CD player and rack-width mixer??
  7. I'd say MOST clubs these days would have CDJ's available for use by guest DJs. SOME may have TT's as well but not instead of the CDJ's. Best to check out some of the clubs you realistically think you could get a gig at and see what they have in the booth. Also track down some of you local DJs on say Facebook and ask them for some advice on what is available locally. They have probably done the rounds of the local clubs and can give you some insider knowledge (and perhaps some tips on how to get a gig).
  8. So much catchier than "Hearts" lol
  9. Following on from the constructive posts in this thread; what is a good screen size when selecting a laptop for DJing? What screen size do current laptop owners use? What would you say would be too small a screen to use effectively?
  10. If your not happy first time around, try it again or with a slight variation.
  11. Just don't combine the two - DJ Penetrating Poof. (Not that there's anything wrong with that) lol
  12. Not sure what DJ name to pick for yourself? Let this site decide for you. http://www.quizmeme.com/djname/quiz.php Using my full name, it came up with Dj Loud Lickz. What does it come up with for you? Anyway, just a fun way to spend your Sunday afternoon.
  13. If only it was this easy. Love the hints about getting a new agent and buying speakers. lol http://www.wikihow.com/Become-a-Popular ... Make-Money To become the best DJ you got to know all the mixing styles. First of all you need to practice several hours a day and try to flow with the mix. Once you have mastered how to mix try making your own strategies or start creating "gino" beats like Stevie b and all the rest and try hard. Your hard work will be the best Steps 1 Never copy cd's to DJ anywhere. You can get in big trouble with the law!!! 2 Start doing parties with an experienced DJ Company 3 Get an agent and tell him to set you for parties and try making him feel happy by making a deal with him. Get the lowest percentage you possibly can. And then the Agent will set you up to do weddings, parties and clubs every week. 4 When your original contract expires, if you have become famous, look around for a new agent, or renegotiate the percentage you have agreed to and get a lower one. Warnings Burning CD's can get you in very expensive legal trouble. So be sure to obtain your music by legal means. Don't always try to be like someone else, do your own thing, this is why they are famous Try not to think that you know it all, there is always something new to be learned. This is why there are seminars to go to. Try not to ever say that you don't have a certain song. Try to be curtious and say that you will get it on as soon as you can, or play something else that was popular by that artist. Make sure before you leave home that you have everything for your gig or event. It's a little hard to replace something when you are already at the place. Make a list of things you take and check them off when they are loaded into the car. Never buy speakers from the trunk of the guy in the parking lot. Don't forget an extra shirt. Spaghetti sauce has a strange way of showing up.
  14. Simple solution. Track down the manager and ask if he knows his DJ play pre-mixes. He may or may not already know and/or maybe doesn't care so long as he's making money over the bar - which is the main factor in as you call it a "local (shit) pub/club".
  15. Buck, Do you have a photo of your new (old) TTs?
  16. Best advice I could give would be to try out as many setups as you can and see what you like. If you're near any of the DJ shops or can plan a trip to visit one, they should be able to offer you demos on most options.
  17. Welcome. Lots of good and useful info on this forum. Be sure to check all the past posts.
  18. Still digging up some old threads. Any additions to your list of floor-filler tracks?
  19. It's more for mobile gigs then club gigs as each time you are more then likely to be playing at a different venue each week. But if you're running it as a business, you should have all your licences and insurances covered.
  20. Was that equipment cover of public liability? If PI, it shgould be $10 or 20 mill cover.
  21. Not saying every venue will ask, but some may. I've been asked a few times over the last few years. Plus it's piece of mind given someone could trip over one of your leads or knock a speaker on a stand which then falls on them. You need to be covered for public liability or else they could sue you personally and I'm rather attached to my house and other belongings. Should cost less that $200 for 12 months cover, so it's not too much of a strain on the pocket. As for hiring your own gear. That may be OK if you do the odd gig every now and then. But if you're working most weekends during the party season, it can get expensive and chew into your profits.
  22. Skank, did you ever have a go at being a VJ? If so, how did you go? What system did you use?
  23. Not sure how you went with finding your equipment insurance, but as paid performers we should all look at public liability and accident cover insurance. If you are getting bookings for private functions, some venues demand that you prove you have PL cover before they let you in the door Two policies to check out are: http://www.aon.com.au/australia/enterta ... urance.jsp http://www.duckforcover.com.au/minigen/ ... ontentID=1
  24. Depends on where you are but looking at the prices at StoreDJ, I find Lightsounds in Sydney beat them on a number of items. e.g. CDJ2000 $1970 from Lightsounds, $2399 from StoreDJ Try to shop around before you commit. And NEVER pay retail!
  25. There are a number of compilation albums out there that should do the trick. I've got a few that I have been using for many years now. The good thing about DJing functions is that the crowd is different each time so once you know what works you can use it again and again and again.
