  1. @Bristles From what I gather you have been into the producing side as well, any info or little tricks you do or have that can make it a bit easier for the rest of us? I think the 'don't expect your first track to be a banger' and 'it takes alot of crap tracks before you make a good track, so get the crap tracks out of the way as soon as possible' mentality definatley rings true.
  2. Lol Canberra is too small you can't bury something and keep it under wraps. Someone you know will know, even though your sure no one will ever know....ya know?
  3. Ermahgerd, is that scratchy seal I see on the deck? Can't believe I almost missed that!
  4. That looks nice and well thought out. Really digging the triple monitor setup as well. I was drawing up some sketches for a new table/booth setup for home. And thought I had some good ideas, but today had an epiphany on the setup so I think I will sketch a few more designs and create a post. Just for an idea, it will be home made custom build, and right now I'm toying with the idea of a 'U' shape, with it going from my height setup, to middle height for production area, to missus height as I'm sure if it was available, she would spend more time mixing. So me and her back to back and the connection would have the pc and production pieces. I took a gander at a few sites, and after seeing a few table setups for $800 plus, I think I can get everything in for that price, if not a few hundred less tbh. Just want to work out design that pretty much would have everything needed. I will start a new thread and post up some drawings and see what you guys think. Just got home from an 11 hour day so might take a day or 2 to get on the pc and draw them up. Think I'm pretty lucky as I'm thinking this will take up a fair amount of room and we should have the room downstairs where I can build it and piece it together. Stay tuned!
  5. Only problem is the restricted banner from the work PC. Will have to check out this thread when I get home, as it sound pretty good
  6. Hey Cupe, Have you still got this going or have you built it up already? If you have built it up, are you able to show some pics if its not too much trouble? I was actually searching the DIY thread over the weekend with the intention of getting ideas and building a new mixing table - but then I found a few designs that I think im going to start drawing out and sketch up for a all on one mixing and production booth. I dont really have any major requirements but height would be one, as im a fair tall buggar and dont like bending over to reach the decks....Actually that just inspired me, I think I will have to draw something up today while I think of it..... Sorry hijacking your thread... Hows the build coming along? Anything you have thought of since initial inception of the idea? Like 'damn I wish I had space for xxxxx built in'?
  7. Hey mate, likewise! Although I have moved up to Brisbane, more lifestyle decision than anything, I was actually down that way 2 weekends ago picking up a bird from my brother. Hella long ass drive! Anyways, keep on killin it and keep warm...stoopid frozen mornings and cold mixing fingers lol! Cheers,
  8. Hey buddy, just figured out my soundcloud login details. stalking....I mean following you lol.

Also got started on cleaning out downstairs today and got a power board to plug in so should be back on the decks tomorrow and opened up Ableton tonight, first time in a long time. Just wanted to say thank you specifically as you have been really friendly and has made this much easier to get back into things. Thanks man :)

Yeah I'm seeing a few things, and rekordbox looks good given the backing of both hardware and software done by pioneer. God knows their mixers and I assume cdj are industry standard. I recall playing in the djm 600 back in the day. But same goes with traktor with the NI line of products. But pioneer are newbies in the software side, so there's that.

i agree time coded vinyl will be the way to go, then I will need to investigate and research the different 'controllers' and/or mixers. I do like the idea of setting a cue point with a press of a button and have been watching a few mixes on the z2 so atm I think that's what I am leaning towards, and that's why I started on ableton, was to add more production and homemade tracks to go with the mixing/scratching.

anyways I'm sorry to regurgitate this to you, just wanted to kinda get advice from someone in the know and up to date with what's out there at the moment.

Actually one question, if I were to go the traktor route, I got confused with all the different naming and options. Is there one that can actually hook up multiple decks. IE a set for mixing and have a scratch set plugged in running on an extra channel from a 4 channel mixer type thing?

Or would I need to buy them individually? I will keep researching but that will be the end requirement for final decision.

Did you get your car sorted with the fluctuation in rpm as well?

Pioneer is only industry standard because they bough their way in lol

hmm... you can use 4 decks but you'll need to buy the bigger sound card, which I think is an audio 10 but I'm not sure...

i don't know much about the Z2 but it does come handy being able to have those cur point functions on a mixer. When I was using time code vinyl I was using the dicers by Novation. They're super cool but you need to map them in traktor and it's a bitch! the dicers are plug and play with serato but not traktor which is why you need to map them. MIDI mapping in traktor is a very time consuming process. It took me 3hrs to figure out how to do it lol

i think the z2 with the time code would definitely be a good option. I'm assuming they only make that 2ch so if you were looking for more you'd probably have to go 4ch mixer and then find a sound card that has 4 inputs

  9. Hey Lab, I totally agree which is why I tried to stress the point of key concepts, but search for them yourself type deal. And no offence taken mate I was really trying to think of stuff that could be relevant and useful for myself and others. But really it does come back down to 'if there's a will there's a way' and I'm sure someone else out there (worldwide) would have the same questions so the info in theory should be out there somewhere. I think the 'what you don't know' is really the crux of it for me. I just need to spend more time and get more disciplined tbh.
  10. Ooh I like this, funky melody/bassline and hella chill track. Awesome stuff
  11. For me, personally I don't really know what I don't know type thing. As stated in another thread, I'm fairly new in the production side of things, but I don't expect you to hold our hand and spoon feed. I believe we need to search, learn, experiment and follow along and grow from own research and doing. What I would find helpful would be key things that someone producing should know. For example: samples - what to look for, how to cut and load them up. I have a basic understanding and have done some before but then if I use that sample, it makes the track sound odd because the drums or bassline sounds totally different. music theory and what goes with what - kinda like chord progression or even 'how to make that A note sound fuller by adding in A, C#, E'. Otherwise key words that one can google to learn about. All things VST and plugins - I know I have massive and a few other plug ins but have no idea how, why or where to use them. Again not a full tutorial but enough guidance where we can google key concepts and learn more. Workflow - my experience was from watching Tom Cosm build a song, and he builds the sounds and fleshes out the middle/busiest part of the track and the works backwards to intro. Does everyone do it this way or do others start at the beginning and just make it up as they go? Plus I learned more doing this, following along and tweaking to make it different that it all started to kinda gel together. These are just a few things from my pov, I'm sure others have other ideas. What I think is more useful would be to skim over the really important stuff but noting to go research more on 'blah and blah'. This would provide guidance in how all the magic happens. I know so much time and effort is required for this, so please don't feel like you have to do this. I would be just as great full with a dot point of things to do or common things that make up a track that I can YouTube and find answers to. Also if there are any links or URLs to something cool showing you how to do a particular thing. Sorry for the wall of text but thought best to jump on it if someone with your talent was going to go to the effort to do it. Also I know there are others on here that do a lot on the production side, so their input would be welcome as well. Help a newb out lol
  12. Haha fair enough, yeah keep that riffraff crap out. It makes it harder to find information when it buried under a bunch of spam BS
  13. Hey lab, do you have video tutes on ableton? I wouldn't mind taking a look as well if that's cool? For me it's a godsend when I find someone who puts together clear, concise information on whatever topic I'm looking for. It's like finding treasure and helps progress/advance so much quicker
  14. Haha awesome, we used to do stuff like that at school on the teachers computer, change 'and' and 'we' for crude random words lol. Show off
  15. Lol wtf, cutting up in the....place that food is prepared.....changed to 'I'm a fagget' hmmm Oooookay then. Thats wild, looks like the food prep area autocorrects itself luls
  16. Ahh thanks Scottie, I was wondering what it all means. I will take a look at that thread now. Cheers
  17. Yeah I agree, it would provide some piece of mind if the time came to part ways, I could almost recover the costs. Might just keep eye out and wait for some 18yr old to give up and sell a setup at decent price. Just wait and swoop in when I have the chance, not to lowball but not get ripped off either
  18. Haha yeah I'm kinda in disbelief, but to be fair they did get solid use for at least 5 of those years, then maybe once a week/fortnight use for another 5 then way less after that when life got hectic. But great little units for learning on and trust me, they got abused....in the good way i can't recall how many sets of needles/styli? I went through. I'm pretty sure I still have the little plastic cases somewhere cos I thought they were super cool! Guess I just need to check costs and pro/con them. Tbh if I play for the next 6 months, then I'm happy to fork out the coin, as they will get used more with serato as well. But if I only play like 1 month worth in that time I would be leaning towards the cheaper option
  19. Forgot to quote above, just so you can get a notification
  20. Thanks lab I will take a look at the stantons, I figure if there is a proven TT that puts up with that kind of abuse for 1/2 the price of the others then they are worth it. Definately Cupe, I was originally using the shure m447s and then switched up the the ortofons pro s from memory. Like the ortofons more because it easier to mark records and can tell if lil dust bunnies have gathered on the tip I have still got the original geminis that has gone through the missus and I learning curve, and still spin fine. Only issue is 1 TT, the motor is kinda waving, hence my sig. It's not really an issue but you constantly have to nudge it to keep it up to speed with the other. Direct drive of course. But I bought them in 2002 or something. Like many years ago lol
  21. Hi guys, sorry I'm spamming this forum, but wanted to get a general consensus on decent vinyl turntable brands. I know of vestax and technics, and have used both before and these are my go to. But I wanted to check, as I have not mixed in a fair while, if there are any other proven manufacturers that I should be looking at. These will be used for home use, and the occasional outing, and will comprising of mixing (both missus and I) and probably a fair amount of scratching and juggling (me more so). Battle mode ftw! I plan on using what we have now to get back into form and go back through the learning curve so to speak but I will be looking at upgrading in say 6 months or so if all goes to plan. any suggestions, stories and experiences will be awesome of what is good nowadays. I will be looking to get onto dvs with this upgrade so I will also start converting our vinyl to digital format after a practice each day - that's the goal anyways. And I have a seperate TT for that. Thanks in advance,
  22. Lol I see what you did there...I just thought it was track no 4. Makes sense ? Sounds good man
  23. Im happy to bite.... IMO I think 'Scratch' is one hell of a doco of hiphop and djing in general. I used to watch this religiously!...even found a youtube video here....Your welcome Then going back to the roots, 'WildStyle' is awesome, watching Grand Master Flash cutting up in the I am a fagget, because apparently, that's where he had his decks setup, like it was just normal. Totally cool! It also has all the fundamentals of hiphop, being dj'ing, mc'ing, breakdancing/B-Boying and graffiti, so very cool, if not to see what it was like back in the day. If your into scratching....'All this scratching is making me itch'....then you have the Q-Bert line up, I have all the dvd's somewhere and can find the names of them. Something like fix it yourself V1 and V2 and his skratchlopedia britannica Then after that I found 'Scratch Vol 2' which from memory was a live set with some of my heroes, being Mix Master Mike, Z-Trip, X-ecutioners and Jazzy Jay. This opened my eyes up totally watching Z-Trips mix when he would drop hard rock in with HipHop (Led Zepplin, Steve Miller Band and Freestylers.) My brain just exploded like 'omg you can do that?!' but makes sense considering most bpm ranges. There is also a bonus disc on 'Scratch Vol 1' where Z-trip shows you how to 'Rock a party' and I don't know how many times I watched that over and over again. Hope that helps and sorry if I have revived an old thread, but I think they are a great watch for anyone interested in turntablism and hip hop in general. Even making me consider setting up plex and throwing them up for you guys to watch. Also im having a few brews atm so if Im doing something wrong please tell me and I will restrain myself Cheers
  24. Hey Scixors, Nice to meet you, I know im a bit late in saying hi, but just wanted to say I myself was raised in Canberra and actually work with Adam and Nate who usually play around Civic on the weekends and used to hang out with Ross (D'Opus) at better music when I was working out in Phillip on my lunch breaks. Was nothing better than watching him go to town on the mpc40?...apc40?...i forget now but watching him slice samples and tune them down to use in his tracks. Was really inspiring! And glaringly obvious to my lack of skills!
  25. Hey NitroMonkey, Just had a listen and I agree with LabRat, in the super happy part. For me it has an old early 2000's anthem feel to it. This could be due to the samples your using or just me reminiscing of 'back in the day'. Regardless it sound tight and keen to hear the finished product. Good stuff man!
