Moving from the Bedroom Banger to the Club Resident
BeatLeSS replied to BeatLeSS's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
There's no right or wrong answer here Skank, and you've definitely given me some ideas. When you talk about coming back to your mix/set list every day or so, are you doing it on software, or recording live from decks? Just seems like it'd be a bit difficult to add/tweak a little segment of a full mix if i'm doing it live on the decks. -
Welcome! You'll find tonnes of help on here, these guys are a great bunch!

Okay guys, I definitely know I'm missing quite a bit when it comes to setting up for a good performance, my question is not so much about the mix itself, but more so the 'homework' side of things that really sets the good apart from the bad!; What I want to know is what is involved, or what do YOU do behind the scenes of that final 'mixtape' that gets it to where you want it. From organising your tunes into categories - What categories do you use? If by genre, what else do you find helps you quickly access what goes with what? To finding those perfect spots in the track that work well - How often do you practice the same song/set list and what sort of things do you do when not on the decks to find that perfect tweak/starting point/etc? It's all fine and dandy to jump on the decks for a few hours get into the swing and start recording. Sure I find myself beatmatching quite well etc, but theres definitely one, two, sometimes more absolute wrecks that when listening back, completely ruin the full hour (or more) for me - which when 8-32bars in length (not that long when in respect to an hour of listening) is so daunting to know! Cheers in advance for the responses guys, I think a lot of people will get something out of these questions/answers - and hopefully help not just me, but others, break through the barrier to becoming a DJ.

Lease it, and get offsite insurance.

Theres a few Jump remixes that slow down as well about half way through, just gotta make sure you've got your next track cue'ed up ready to rock n roll when it speeds back up.

Yup, bust him!

Listening to it now, loved the intro -> Seven Nation Army. More comments to come, started following you on soundcloud too. Hit me up "BeatLeSS"

I'm currently using Logitech Z-5500's - possibly the best computer speakers i've ever seen, next to my 6.2 muteki's I personally don't find too much of a problem with them, just they are scattered around the table and too many wires. So i figured going to a 2 speaker system (monitors) would neaten things up and make it look a bit better too. Looks like i might put off the monitors for a while and get a new laptop first.

Stanton C.324's and the M.212 mixer with roadcase. Soon after bought a Behringer DDM4000 mixer & Koas Pad 3 (Still don't use this -> need to learn asap ) Christmas just passed treated myself to a DJM800 & CDJ900's. Sold the stantons & behringer; still need to learn the KP3.

Grats mate!

Zeds - can you get any photo's up? I might try giving the Pioneer rep a call - could be worth a shot as there is obviously something wrong with the build quality. CBG - Am looking at those XD53's spec wise, will give these a go next set of cans I buy i think.

Okay guys, Time for me to start gearing up for the next purchase to compliment my 'rig'. I'm looking for monitors, moreso value for money, not cheap, but don't wanna go over the top either. I'll post up some pics of my room soon so it might help someone who knows what they're talking about steer me in the right direction. Basically what i'm wanting to know; What do people here use and would they recommend them to others? Are they just the same as any normal speakers, or do i need an amplifier to go with them? Cheers for the help in advance guys Next next purchase will be PA speakers so i can finally have all my own gear for parties!

Hey Zeds, what happened to your HDJ-1000's? I'm curious, cos mine broke the other week! Clean snap right off the swivel (Right phone). Not sure whether it was my fault cos i was half tanked at the time, but i swear i just put them on like normal.. Not a fan of the weak frame atm, but love the quality. Little bit of Locktite and all is well again! Will ducktape the crap outta it to make sure it won't break again and add some character!

Downloaded, listening also. Hopefully this will break up the last hour of work

Here's my 2c on the matter; Who cares if it's got autosync - Yeah, so someone will be able to pick up a set of 350's and possibly have it matched in. All this means is that they are going to spend longer and longer trying to figure out why what they're playing is sounding like shit. I relate it back to computers (since i'm from a computer savvy background) The average idiot knows how to turn a computer on, start up internet explorer and browse as much as they like. As soon as something goes wrong, I get an angry phone call all because they've got no actual idea of what is happening. You all know what it takes to make a good mix/set/song - Let everyone else who thinks they do try and fail, and reap the rewards for being better in the first place when everything falls apart.
-
me too, i'm curious as to how you had that perfect with an auto-loop + quantize on. On mine it always seems to drag just past the last beat and then skip back to the beginning again. Or did you tweak the loop? I've personally turned Quantize off and try and use the in/out whereever possible - apparently thats how real men do it

CDJ 900's Vs. CDJ 1000 - which is better?
BeatLeSS replied to zedsx6's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
www.storedj.com.au - $1449ea with $100 cash back - so $1349 each after cash back. Considering 6months ago when they first released i payed $1900 each, a pretty good price! -
CDJ 900's Vs. CDJ 1000 - which is better?
BeatLeSS replied to zedsx6's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
I'm using 900's and i'd have to say the Slip mode is definitely worth it's weight in gold if you wanna do a bit of scratching/looping to skip a boring part of a song or just to keep it in sync. However, lack of hot cues not so good and i really think i could get a little more creative with hot cues + rekordbox on the 2000's 900's + network switch + laptop with RekordBox = legendary. No more CD's, can organise your music in playlists to almost layout you desire. Downside - I'm freaking slack for organisation so the music is building up where it's not getting categorized etc etc haha. -
That's unfortunate dude. Get onto it right away, best advice i can give you. If you leave it for any length of time there are grey areas! Hope you get the problem solved though !

Love the pics of the studio man! I've got a little space/room in the house i'm able to now move my stuff into and deck out so it's good seeing what people do with theirs. I have so many ideas floating through my head!

Welcome Mitch! You'll find plenty of stuff here to get you on your way
