  4. Humming is generally indicative of a ground loop somewhere in the audio signal path created by all your gear being interconnectd. Can be caused by faulty leads, badly earthed equipment, or something as simple as a plug not being inserted into the socket all the way. Depending on the amp you're using, if it's particularly old there can quite possibly be a background hum behind the audio it's sending to the speakers, made more evident by the clarity of your headphones.
  5. I use Traktor with an X-Station 49 as the USB soundcard. To record i've mapped a hotkey (in my case, ctrl+shift+R) to toggle Recording. If you're using an external mixer i'm not sure if this method will work but for me using a midi controller to manipulate Traktor's software mixer, this is the best method. The end result is a recording with absolutely zero signal loss and no extra audio coloration from running through extra hardware

  8. You really can't compare the two. Serato is great if you come from a scratching background and want to manipulate digital audio in a similair fashion, while Traktor is great if you're interested in mashing up audio with loops, filters, triggered efx, and cue points. Personally i prefer Traktor. The power of the program really comes out when you start customising your midi mapping assigning multiple functions to a knob or say having different 'modes' you can switch to so a single fader can control different functions.

Hello i'm new. Well, relatively new to DJ'ing that is. I've been into music all my life. From getting told off for playing drums on pots and pans as a kid, taking piano lessons and playing with synths at home, to later learning to compose electronica on computer, to play drums, to write music for a 3 piece hardfunk (primus meets helmet?) band, to gigging around melbourne with the Fresh crew playing my own tracks - i've always been doing something to get the beats and melodies out of my head and into the world. I took some time off from the music to concentrate on studies and work to get better gear, and for the last 2 years have been focusing my energies on the digital DJ world of Traktor and midi controller hardware. Technology has progressed to the point where you're no just longer mixing tracks but able to make a collage of sound using beats, loops, and basslines. I love being able to leapfrog through tracks using short segments to create a continuously peaking set. Anyway that's me in a nutshell!
