http://soundcloud.com/wezg/wez-g-head-alchemy-dj-set I felt like a bit of a change, a bit of an up-tempo feel to the mix to warm those toes in the murky winter weather… I’d recently put together a nice acid house feeling dub for a Brazilian vocalist to work on and wanted to fit it into the mix… It is Hacienda style Acid House… This mix flows from Acid House to techno and back down to Acid… I wanted to bang it up to full-on Adam Beyer style techno and add in some Goa Trance but unfortunately couldn’t get the tempo geared up that high in 80 minutes… Some nice Laurent Garnier tracks thrown in and he has been a big influence on me as a DJ – I’ve never seen anyone at all demonstrate crowd control on a dancefloor like he does… He’s like an operatic conductor and his versatility and range of music in his sets is astonishing… I started off in the scene listening to a lot of techno and playing it so I guess this mix is taking me back full circle… 1. Wez G – Brasil Acid (Dub) [White] 2. Joey Beltram – Energy Flash (Original Mix) [Transmat] 3. Irregular Synth, Andrea Frisina - Dub City (Lutzenkirchen Remix) [Gate Null Recordings] 4. Wez G - Spooky Rhythm Haunted House? Well - for want of a better title - I though there was some spooky theme going on in the track titles for this deep and funky mix which explores some of the finer elements of 2011 deep house, building to a crescendo with a classic remake of Superchumbo's Revolution, concluding with one of the finer tracks from Guy J's new 1000 words album. Don't miss out on my old Swedish matey Nibc's nice remix on his own label, Trunkfunk, one to watch out for as it booms out sounds from Berlin. Get with the Spooky Rhythm... TRACKLISTING: 1. Pacific! - Unspoken feat. El Perro Del Mar (Alex Gopher & Pierrick Devin Remix) [Vulture] 2. Todd Terje - Snooze 4 Love (Original Mix) [Running Back] 3. The songs included on this mix seemed to me to have a lovey dovey theme and feel so hence the title 'True Romance'. Deep and funky, it flows nicely, with stand out tracks from Glimpse and Vincenzo and obviously the opening classic from A Man Called Adam. Wez G - Solar Flare A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun surface, which is interpreted as a release of a massive amount of energy. I've been munching fruit Menthos all week - can't get enough of them so a sweet theme seemed appropriate, that and the first two songs are about sweets, including a great remix of the eagerly anticipated new Billie Ray Martin track, surely one of the greatest vocalists to ever have graced the dancefloors of clubland. This is a mix I was excited to do as I managed to fit in three of my own productions (a bootleg, a remix and an original), also a song by Tricia Lee Kelshall, the vocalist I manage. The mixing is back to normal two decks as I feel that sometimes you lose the flavour of a set by overcomplicating things. Turn up your speakers and Bring Down The House! 1. Wez G - Island Hop http://soundcloud.com/wezg/wez-g-island-hop http://wezg.podomatic.com/entry/2011-01 ... 6_10-08_00 http://www.last.fm/music/Wez+G/_/Island+Hop A few years ago I went Island hopping in the South Pacific... It's great fun, a perfect paradise... This soundtrack is ideal for lazing away on a yacht, checking into the beaches, diving in coral reefs and catching a bit of surf... OK - It is winter, but in the South Pacific it's always hot and Snow White Winter Chill (my previous chillout mix) was received well so I thought it about time to treat you to some more mellow vibes... There are sounds across the board with Bristol represented by Portishead, Thievery Corporation and Röyksopp among the big guns, and a Chris Rea bootie chucked in also... It hops from a calm 90bpm up to a full flow 132 bpm, towards the end. It's a perfect soundtrack to the start of your weekend as you prepare to go out somewhere nice. Tropical Island bliss with Wez G... Keep Hopping! 1. DJ Pippi - On This Island (Original Mix) [Extremely House Music] 2. High Low - Midnight Sun [Lovely Mood] 3. Wez G - Snow White Winter Chill It's snowing in the UK and that means everything stops. Roads are shut, schools are closed, trains don't run and the shops are full of panic-buyers. This Christmas, I thought I'd slow down like the rest of the snow-swept nation and freeze my turntables with some icy chilled melodies. I didn't feel the need to go above 100bpm so get relaxed, pump up the stereo and keep your eye on the thermometer. Merry Christmas one and all. 1. Minus 8 - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime feat. Wez G - Shaman of the Tribe In ancient times, every tribe had a shaman who was the medecine man and spiritual leader of the community. Often under the influence of locally produced drugs such as Mescaline or Ayahuasca or Iboga, in ecstatic trances, the shaman would bring back from the spiritual world key knowledge that would help his fellow tribesmen. As society developed, so did organised religion and the shamen were locked up and kept away as 'madmen' while priests and vicars served the rulers and books took over from the ancient medecines. In recent times we have seen club culture develop and society has taken an about turn. Banging to the beat of a shamanic drum, DJs have taken the place of the local choirs as people seek to trance out in the company of others in raves and nightclubs. We have gone full circle and today's shaman is the DJ. Welcome to a mix of tribal sounds from the 21st Century. Go into a trance and in your state of bliss remember the ancients... 1. Wez G - On The Road ‘… one night we suddenly went mad together again; we went to see Slim Gaillard in a little Frisco nightclub. Slim Gaillard is a tall, thin Negro with big sad eyes who’s always saying ‘Right-orooni’ and ‘How ’bout a little bourbon-arooni.’ In Frisco great eager crowds of young semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums. When he gets warmed up he takes off his undershirt and really goes. He does and says anything that comes into his head. He’ll sing ‘Cement Mixer, Put-ti Put-ti’ and suddenly slow down the beat and brood over his bongos with fingertips barely tapping the skin as everybody leans forward breathlessly to hear; you think he’ll do this for a minute or so, but he goes right on, for as long as an hour, making an imperceptible little noise with the tips of his fingernails, smaller and smaller all the time till you can’t hear it any more and sounds of traffic come in the open door. Then he slowly gets up and takes the mike and says, very slowly, ‘Great-orooni … fine-ovauti … hello-orooni … bourbon-orooni … all-orooni …how are the boys in the front row making out with their girls-orooni … orooni … vauti … oroonirooni …” 'Jack Kerouac' in "On The Road". Kerouac was part of the Beat Generation, a group of poets and writers who toured 1950s America. My old boss used to call me a 'Beatnik' and in a way I am a bit of a modern day hippy. DJs are today's beat generation and this mix suggests a journey, so hop on your bike, in your car, on your plane, boat or helicopter and turn on, tune in and drop out... 1. I am learning ableton and did a remix of an Anne Savage track. You can hear it on my facebook fanpage http://facebook.dj/wezg in the music player on bottom left. Anne Savage is a long time DJ and a pioneer of hard house. For her first release on her new label Siren Trax she has decided to also release a production pack for wannabee producers... My mix isn't a hard house version but there is a competition on to get signed on the label. Wez G - Ten Foot Tahitian This is a blast from the past. I recorded it in November 2005 though it contains tracks from much earlier. I named the mix after the massive waves that roll into Tahiti which lays claim to being the place where surfing began. It recreates part of the six hour set I did when I played at Tikisoft in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia. It was a perfect day. The sun was shining. I went swimming with the sharks and stingrays in the morning and then got stuck into the island's decks for a marathon set. The mix is summery and reflects the sounds of one of the earth's best untouched paradises. House Music. It's a global groove... 1.Late Night Alumni - Nothing Left to Say [Hed Kandi] 2.Hysterix - Talk to Me [Deconstruction] 3.Seelenluft feat. Michael Smith - Manila [backyard Recordings] 4.Playgroup - Behind the Wheel (dj-kicks electroca$h mix) [Global Underground] 5.Desert - Moods [stress] 6.Yello - To The Sea [Mercury] 7.Chemical Brothers - Hold Tight London [Freestyle Dust] 8.Adam Johnson - Four squares [Global Underground] 9.Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Gabriel & Dresden mix) [Perfecto] 10.Leftfield featuring John Lydon - Open Up [Hard Hands] 11.Underworld - Dark and Long [Ministry of Sound] 12.Kelli Ali - Kids (Rui Da Silva remix) [One Little Indian] 13.Trafik feat. I feel like a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to DJing - I'm a vinylist and think that records are such an important part of the trade that they should be supported by anyone who claims they are a DJ. However, I recently got hold of Traktor and have been using it to showcase certain promos and the odd tune in my mp3 collection I haven't got on vinyl. I must admit it is a neat little program. However, I am disgusted by the autobpm feature - It just makes DJing lazy - Of course you don't have to use it but it it tends to just operate. I can't understand how a generation of DJs might be growing up not knowing the critical process of beatmatching at all. I find I get a few computer glitches where the sound cuts out a lot. I've never used Traktor to play live and would hate to ever become wholely reliant on it - Computer failures must be common and in a nightclub environment I would hate to be without my trusty vinyl. I can see advantages to the travelling DJ in that they can take their entire music collection with them on the move and not have to lug heavy vinyl about... It enhances versatility but is pushing the digital sound too much maybe - Anologue and vinyl is better. My mate who runs a good record shop reckons that a lot of the top DJs who play CDs and MP3s still prefer buying the tracks on vinyl and then recording onto digital format themselves. A better sound. I think the FX unit is first class on Traktor but in honesty I generally find that FX in a DJ set are a bit gimmicky and spoil the sound - DJs have a tendency to overuse them. If the sound was meant to be superflanged then the artist would have recorded it himself.... I know little about looping as I've never been a CD DJ. I listen to the like of Richie Hawtin talk about the possibilities and it does excite me but maybe I'm too set in my ways to start learning new tricks... I was wondering what you guys thought of Traktor? Are you using it? Any problems during live sets? What do you condider the advantages and disadvantages?

I think the most important concept to grasp is the way you listen to music. As a DJ you listen to music completely differently to the average clubber. Be analytical and think how you would link every song you hear into a mix. The most important part of the dj ritual is creating a groove and that can only be done if you understand your music properly. Identify the different layers to a track, beware of its speed, think about where it builds up and breaks down. For a mix DJ there is usually one 'sweet spot' where a mix can be hit when blending two records together. timing is crucial. you MUST hit the sweet spot to make your mixes sound really good. Beatmatching is important but will come with time. I certainly wouldn't rely on autobpm counters in traktor or cdjs as you will not learn how to be a DJ and be over-reliant on technology. The music comes 4 beats to a bar and in general is in 32 beat cycles. If you get into the pattern of initially counting 32 beats , you will see how a track is laid out... Obviously having fun is the most important part... If you know how to have fun with your music you will be able to entertain others which is what it's all about...

I've had a few lessons on Ableton and have come up with Smooch - It's far from perfect but a step in the right direction... It tails off and gets a bit boring after halfway http://www.last.fm/music/Wez+G/_/Smooch http://soundcloud.com/wezg/smooch Please let me know what you think!!! Any production tips would be gratefully received too...

I enjoy the groove you can build into a progressive set... I know that breaks are pretty big in Australia and am unsure how my sound will go down there... I used to be a big fan of a DJ from Brisbane called Angus - He used to do some great sets... I think my cousin said he was dead now... A great Aussie DJ. I never saw him play in this part of the world... Any of you guys heard of him?

I play house music, across the board tho' will throw in chillout and drum n bass, whatever... If I had to pigeonhole my style I would say it is light progressive... Sasha converted me to house music back in 1992 and he is a big influence but I try to keep most of the podcasts I do quite accessible... so play a lot more mainstream though my club set can vary depending on situation... I do prefer to bang it up proggy style tho'

I'm in South Wales but have a lot of family in Australia in Melbourne and on the Gold COast. I learnt to DJ in Oz in 1990 at the age of twelve so have kept in touch with what's happening in the scene downunder. I DJed with Anthony Pappa in the UK and I love some of the stuff coming out of Oz at the mo, particularly Luke Chable and his Lostep... I've never DJed in Oz but plan on living and working there one day... I hope to build an audience for my podcasts here... Who knows? Maybe a nice promoter will take a fancy and decide to fly me out!!! Could do with getting away from the rain and wind in Wales. http://djwezg.com is my website. I'll post my mies on these boards every month so stay tuned...
