nice 1 does anyone have a list or a link to a thread with all the mixers that also act as timecode/soundcards for traktor and that have some midicontrol for browsing/cues etc? Obviously I am aware that Namm will probably be generating a few new ones but I need to start my research somewhere.
-
top man Sol... that mixer also frees up my NI8 and traktor cables am i right? So although it's top of my budget I actually get my soundcard and traktor cables back to set up my cdj rig too. Is very interesting. Any one got any knowledge on the fader in that thing? or more ideas for a solution.

I've set my technics up to run traktor scratch pro. For the purposes of this thread I am not interested in any other platter/control options... As far as I can tell I just need a new basic mixer which has a reasonable scratch fader. I also need a way to navigate traktor, i.e. browse, load, set and trigger cues and loops, use fx etc. So I saw this and thought it looked ok for a basic mixer: http://www.djbooth.net/index/dj-equipme ... ech-dif-1s and was then thinking of getting a NI F1 or X1. Sum total then = $375 - $450 in your money. my budget can reach to double that but I am not the kind of guy who pays for things I don't need. But I am also aware there are several mixers which have integral midi control options which would allow me to use only one device for both functions. Anyone got a better idea what I can buy?

ok... add to that the lost income from not Djing for a weekend = $300 plus a bit of spending money = $700-ish, (depending on the prices of certain commodities and the availability of park benches/hotel rooms.) plus a gift for the wife and kids to lessen the emotional blackmail = $ 1 $2501 = £1664 shouldn't take you too long if you start a whip round now scottie

*just pay for my flights then

^ nope, no difference i can hear. And for the record it also doesnt matter if you are using vinyl DVS to play a digital track. It still sounds digital.
-
I would add a kick on it's track, synthesised or sampled from the original loop wouldn't matter as long it was high quality. Then sidechain compress all the other tracks using the new distinct kick. If you compress the loop a little you'll help the new kick stand out. If you compress the loop a lot you'll get that pumping/breathing sound loved by dancefloors.

^Cheers Boss! I actually do want my students to know about adjf coz it's so useful on DJ knowledge... but due to the tits and arse and drugs and stuff (even on avatars lol!) I cannot achally recommend them at you or have links without someone somewhere getting upset. If they ever started using the forum I'd need to hide my face and antics too coz they can't be telling their parents about my extra curriculars... But: Posters for the walls and stickers for the shiny apples on the back of the computers would be nice, and might just help the kids find a useful DJ forum without my help...

^thanks all i Saw yer other thread too and feel you mate. Luckily for me the people who use this gear have no idea how to take care of it... but by the time they stop visiting me for tuition they sure as hell know how to take care of it, and use it, properly

Exactly mitch Thats what op was asking innit?

no pun intended but don't forget your local thrift shop. Lots of people buy CDs, import them to digital and sell/give them to the second hand/charity shops. You can get them dirt cheap. ...worth a look if there is one near you.

If they are converting from 320 to Aiff definitely not. You can't polish a turd. If they are deleting the old 320 and giving you a new Aiff maybe, I tend to agree with Russel and always want the best quality. But if you have heaps and are not playing on quality systems then you will just be filling your HD for no perceivable benefit. edit: just noticed your final q: Having a vareity of qualities (i.e. aiff and mp3 and wav) would result in a variety of sound qualities through reference monitors or a good club system. You would end up needing to take this into account when mixing. If you are ever hoping to mix in clubs you should be getting the best quality you can. On a hifi the difference won't show up as much.

oh aye, amd mitch: by complete fluke I discovered the reason my embedding wasnt working was becasue my youtube url was "https" when I accidentally deleted the "s" and was left with : "http" it worked... you prob told me that a million times but I have to live it to live and learn.

So following on from my scratch practise jan 2013 I thought i'd see how rusty I was on the 'ole vinyl... sorry about the camera angle and sound quality, I'm not even sure if i synced the audio to the vid properly.... was in too much of a rush to tickle...but you know this is adjf, so I wanted to share the love anyway... pretty feckin rusty, but still so much fun. So glad I have somewhere to set these girls up again

so many problems, from dodgy ceilings to dangerous electrics, cold weather making plaster take weeks to go off, and an industrial accident along the way... but i am finally open for business. Technics 1210s, CDJ 900s, Traktor Scratch Pro, Traktor 2.5, Serato dj, Numark Mixtrack, numark NS6 (not in pics) Itch, ableton and reason. Not forgetting this is part of my crews venue so the other side of the corridor is a fully fitted nightclub with 6K DandB sound system... and a bar. Will be aiming to film a walkthrough for you all, and I still have to get all the music prod and sponsorship equipment added, but here's the bare bones of my new room with just my own gear. and here's how it looked a month or two ago: Now I can finally start working through my backlog of bookings.

two options: 1) make a living playing music that isn't your first love so you can at least earn a living playing music - this won't always be dubstep, you'll have to move with fashion and will probably end up doing chart/commercial and functions at some points in your life. This option allows you to have dj gear around you and the chance to do what you want with it once in while. It basically means you try to make Djing your dayjob, which isn't easy. 2) stick to only playing what you want. Get a "normal" day job. Hope the day job earns enough and leaves enough time to indulge in DJing. and maybe, one day, fashion will turn round and start to favour your taste in music again. Obviously these options are the same, it's just that in option 1 DJing is the day job. Be warned, it's still one of the hardest jobs to succeed in.

lovin that deep breakdown in the middle. and as mitch said: clean and crisp

I never find the time. I teach DJ skills I have learnt over the years to young people and this is a rewarding living, but like any self-employed job I have to spend heaps of time on training, making sure I'm insured and legal and setting up projects and advertising them, just for starters. It also took a long time to get a rep and make it work as a living. I do mobile gigs for money too so have to spend time prepping route maps, maintaining playlists and doing those gigs. I get this work because of my old rep as a DJ in bars and clubs in my home town. I don't mind either of these tasks, they still keep my hand in with the gear and I often get 5 minutes or so to quickly jam my skills before sessions or gigs. But I can't honestly say these things satisfy my desire to DJ for myself. Years ago all I did was put on events, DJ and get high, I was always broke but I loved it. I played what I wanted, created my own scene, and had the rock n roll lifestyle 100% of the time. Then I decided to start a fam and take on the responsibility to keep the bread on the table, now I am always working and I love it. So basically I dont get the time to indulge my creative DJ side, when I did i didn't earn any money becasue it was so much fun spending it all... but since then I have made a living out of working with music and DJ gear. It's a fine balance which I couldnt have found if I wasnt willing to live without cash while I was earning my rep as a DJ and then work fookin hard while I was catching up with the money-making when i started my family. TL/DR users: Final point: As you know I do occasionally get to post short vids and mixes though... secret to doing those at the moment is: Don't find the time. TAKE THE TIME.
