+1 swiss also if you can while mixing down try and swap between using your reference monitors and using some pretty normal hifi rig. Because your car and most end users will be using basic hifi which colours the sound you really need to know it sounds ok played through both types of system too. FYI: I dont produce though, my ears aren't good enough, I learnt the theories, tried a lot, gave up/ran out of time. I do still bash togetehr ideas but I always collaborate with someone else to do mixdowns and mastering.

a bit of a guide for you guys (effects, cue and hot cues)
overit replied to lloydc's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
From what Mitch said hot cue behaviour has changed on the cdj 2000. On my cdj1000 mk 2 or 3 if I hit a hot cue from pause or play it plays from the hot cue and continues to play wether I hold or release the hot cue button. So to play short samples I would use the cue button, releasing when I want the sample to stop. To get a tight cut of the sound I use the hot cue in conjunction with the cross fader. Having thought about it the main benefit i can see to using hot cue is having 3 samples available and still having your main Cue set to mix with when you want to. Not that the cat in this vid uses different samples. On a bad day I would say he was showboating unnecessarily, on a good day I would say he's learnt to do it that way and he feels comfortable with it. -

^ cheers mitch, although I'm not sure what you mean by "bit before acid rave"? "acid house" was summer of 1988 and so before this rave stuff. Most acid house heads thought rave was a bit cheesy and sold out, especially because rave was all about ecstasy and speed and faster beats... the original acid house parties were generally more varied musically playing electro, detroit techno, hiphop, acid trax, house, new wave and disco even!... also acid house was dominated by LSD and Ecstasy with much less amphetamine so a much more hallucinatory/trippy crowd and a very different mood. regarding samples: two of those tunes sampled this classic which underpins about 45% of all house ever: -

Nice vid Lloyd. +1 Can anyone see why, right at the beginning, he uses hot cue then taps cue to stop... instead of just pressing and holding cue for the duration he wants? Looks to me like he's using the showiest methods for visual appeal but someone tell me if his hotcue/cue technique results in a different sound to just press and holding cue? -

Moderators: Feel free to move this if you think is on wrong board. Fucken LOL at this mix. Believe it or not this was done as a request for my agent who books me to do weddings. It just shows how long it is since this whole Dance culture started. The generation who grew up raving are now getting married and want these memories on their big day. Anyway this is a short taster mix of what we called Rave in 1990/1991/1992. It wasn't big hard or clever, it wasn't deep, soulful or house. It was the precursor to jungle, hardcore, and breakbeat. I used to go mad to these tunes. Unfortunately I didnt have time and couldn't lay my hands on so many songs that deserved to be in this mix, but that's life. Half hour of piano, breaks, bass and old skool. Put yer white gloves on, blow yer whistle.

nice spot cupe. retailing at £155 monopoly money.

Aw man, sounds like MD was to you what C90 was to me. MD was always a stepping stone between wax and cloud to me. Just like DAT.

Buying vinyl collections – a philosophical dilemma
overit replied to Cupe's topic in DJ Headquarters
For tunes: Quality > Quantity. That said I do own a heap of vinyl from the charity shop which at first glance doesnt look like "quality" and oftne isn't even music. I have spoken word, classical, rock, pop, cheese and all sorts bought at 10p a disc... but all have been used to source samples of strings/ hits/ vox etc in the days before sample libraries were available online. So each has a space in my collection, just in case I ever need to source another scratchy old sound. -
cheers lads. organised is my middle name, i just act like an idiot because that way people explain things to me clearer or sumthin

ok, i been searching and it's all so confusing. Old threads all over the net seem to disagree with newer info. so what's the lowdown... Can I use a LAN cable to control rekord box on my laptop and throw out my USB flash drives? Can I use the CDJ 850s to midi control traktor on my laptop without timecode? do I need to do any firmware updates? any other preferred ways of using 850s with USB, laptop, rekordbox, traktor or anything else... please post in this thread:

^nice 1 wazza. I think I may have to keep the school using publicly available software so the kids can feel comfortable using what their mates are using... but I look fwd to developments on this and the midi controller you mentioned on the other fred... Just coz I have to teach kids on stuff they see their mates using it doesnt mean I'm not interested myself. do you have a thread open anywhere so I can get more info?
