had a play on this the other day. It's ok, if you like that kind of thing. I didn't.

mmmm, I don't want to raise an old ogre but I reckon if you avoided using words that could be considered prejudiced you may get more female users and users from more diverse/international/ethnic groups. Not that I want a Politically correct site, being PC is bullshit and we all know it. I just think some of us could give a little more consideration of how the text looks to new users who don't know us yet.

How do different DJ's/Producers stand out?
overit replied to MintyCondition's topic in DJ Headquarters
hmm, so angus youngs school uniform hasn't proven a memorable and reliable marketing tool for 40/50 years? And Ronald Mcdonald isn't in any way associated with burgers? Lady gagas dress sense doesn't get her press attention? For comedians a catchphrase is branding as much as any gimmick to a DJ. If you think the same catchphrase = same songs then you forget the whole of the rest of the comedians set relies on new jokes as much as a DJs set relies on new songs. The catchphrase is just a part of the branding, the same as a gimmicky box on head, school uniform or whatever. I dont use them. You dont have to use them. I'm just pointing out that they are a fact of the industry, if that is the industry you want to be a part of. -
How do different DJ's/Producers stand out?
overit replied to MintyCondition's topic in DJ Headquarters
^To most of us I'm sure this is true. We are DJs who want to be recognised for our music. But to the entertainment industry as a whole gimmicks are a reliable way of selling products. It's part of marketing/branding. If you have a logo, appearance and/or identity that makes you memorable it will help you sell to an audience who require that kind of prompt. I never wanted an identity, i just want to DJ. I don't want to be known as playing any specific genre and once an identity is formed in punters' minds they will arrive expecting a specific thing from you. So I dont have an identity amongst punters. I have a rep amongst agents and promoters. That's just the way I wanted to do business. But I wouldn't dis a DJ who wears a box on his head anymore than I would dis a comedian who always uses the same catchphrase. It's part of the game, just a different game to the one I play. -
I dont know if this is a true fact but I have been told that: Ep has less music per inch, therefore groove can be wider and deeper, allowing for more detail and depth to the pressing.... and this makes it louder. In modern terms: LP has to have it's groove compressed to fit so much on so little = quieter/less clarity.

Just remembered: I once did a guest slot on BBC radio Leeds. {insert cereal guy.jpeg) They didn't even have any decks in the studio. I had to take my own decks to mix. All they had in the studio was a bespoke computer system that playlisted all the songs, ads, news breaks etc so all the radio presenter did was talk on the mic and press play for whatever the software had lined up for him next. The actual playlist was decided by the radio station management team who obviously did research regarding what their listeners wanted to hear, and what there sponsors wanted to have played. When it was my go i played through a line in in the studio after being introduced by the presenter.

Still friday here too. ...was gonna say something about how this is turning into another hiphop fred coz of the users who regularly post, then hoped to buck the trend. Did a shuffle. and:

Radio djs are presenters. They lead in adverts, news, songs etc. They also sometimes lead in guest mixes from mix djs, who hardly ever speak and nearly always mix. Some DJs can do both things. But the two jobs are very different.

Are rough transitions acceptable on stage? (MIXING)
overit replied to RYUK's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
Rough mixing may not be acceptable to some but it sure as hell happens. It depends on your music/crowd/atmosphere of course but in my humble experience: Let's face it: Shit happens. Drinks get spilled, idiots fuck you up mid mix. You may have terrible monitors, or you may just have a wobble... if you're best mix goes wrong it is up to you as a performer to be able to recoup the fail and turn it back into something baus. Live music is respected because live performers can cope with the rigours of live performance. Many ravers are too busy chatting/drinking etc to notice a rough transition anyway. And if you are worried about what the wannabe bedroom DJs think then you need to getalife. I'm not saying you need to be a scruffy whale like me, but I wouldn't worry about perfection. Perfection is airbrushed photos of cosmetically enhanced women. Reality is someone you can actually touch. I know what I prefer. /rant. -
^ aye, is unpossible tho. Cloning is a whole other kettle of fish the way I have to do it. But as you say, all sorted.
-
OK. Sorted it. The issue was that I had cloned my mac using time machine/migration assistant. In the process it changed my account user name from "name" to "name-1" This meant the filename path for all files changed from "name" to "name-1" I am used to this on Traktor, Itch, Itunes etc... after cloning you get a warning stating "cannot find library please choose a new path" and so I sort them all an everything runs tickety boo. FYI - rekord box did not recognise the filename path was incorrect, in fact it did not even recognise that the user account did not exist. Rekord box still showed analysis happening and saving without any warning but it was in fact not saving anywhere. i.e. rekord box was still set to save to my library in user "name" which did not exist. It should have been saving my library in user "name-1". A simple change of path to library, followed by reanalysis sorted it all. BPM showing on cdj 850s now. I will know for next time but let this be a warning to users - Following cloning using migration assistant rekordbox showed analysis happening and completing and never gave any warning or clue to the fact it could not actually save it's analysed data anywhere. Whale.

How do different DJ's/Producers stand out?

Wow what an idiot, hope you got your money back after that you got the wrong end of the stick mate. This is our club, we booked the act. We are now struggling with a handful of customers who do want their money back (most realised there was fuck all we could do about this) but we are simultaneously dealing with the acts' agent, our insurance and the fineprint on booking contracts to try and get the money we paid back so we can honour the customers requests for refunds. It's a proper can of worms. but the reason I posted here is because unfortunately - even though the act ruined his gig, and even though it's caused heaps of grief - the act has actually got heaps of facebook comments, hype, and all the other bullshit acts get when they do some gimmicky bullshit to get attention. Wether he kicked off coz he was drunk, an idiot or coz he wanted the hype - as they say - "there's no such thing as bad press." Fortunately we run a tight ship and mostly attract discerning customers so he won't be selling many records here in the future. But the hype caused by the fall out will probably actually benefit him in the end coz of all the knobs who weren't there to see for themselves and who think gimmicks are more exciting then music. So to sum up - stick with the music. Don't stand out for anything else. -

How do different DJ's/Producers stand out?

We has a HipHop act on this weekend. I won't name him for reasons that will become clear. But to make sure we remembered him and he "stood out" he got way past drunk, stopped the music, started ranting political shite, got a bottle thrown at him, climbed of stage, knocked two teeth out of a random punters face (not the whale who had threw the bottle), then got back on stage and threw the decks on the floor. Is that the kind of thing you mean? -

1) so your playing at a party, do you mix your music before or do you have a specific lineup of music and mix it on the spot? do you make sure you have enough music to last the party? The real skill to DJing lies in guessing what people want to hear next. It is called "reading the crowd." 2) What programs do you guys use to organize your music? and how do you do it?\ I use Itunes as I can have the same song in multiple playlists, I have playlists for Genre, Feel, Mood. DJ software such as Traktor and Serato will read your itunes playlists too. 3) what is a midi controller? and what does it have to do with mixing music A midi controller is any device which has buttons etc on it and which can control software. It is what you sue to play and mix your music. If a midi controller has 2 platters it is often called a DJ controller, but it is still a midi controller. Eg Numark NS6, Denon MC3000, Pioneer DDJt-1. You can use a DJ/Midi controller to control software such as Traktor, Serato. You can add an additional midi Controller such as a launchpad, akai lpd8 etc to control more functions on the software if your DJ/Midi controller doesn't have enough buttons for you.

a mate of mine is a bonafide keyboard genius and he's had an idea for a new business. I'm not going to write up his biog here, if you want to use his service ask him yourself, or google JD73. ...but if you aren't happy with what you can do on the cheeseboard he is offering an online service to supply tunemakers with tiptop chords and sounds. http://www.facebook.com/ezkeys

k, might be worth a look for some users anyway.

http://scratchsuccess.com/video-1/ from 'ere; http://www.digitaldjtips.com/ mitch: no idea for how to embed that vid as is not youtube.

done that already bro. Reckon it's right back to square 1. Uninstall rekordbox format usb drive install rekord box fresh copy itunes playlists using rekord box bridge analyse collection copy rekord box playlists to usb test report back to capt Fudd.
-
Tested this last night and the CDJs displayed BPM on tracks from root folder and on CD quite quickly. SO... I guess I gotta go back to basic with how I use rekord box. Previously I have: Set up a playlist in Itunes. Used the rekord box "bridge" to drag and drop the itunes playlist to the "playlists" pane of rekord box. Analysed the whole collection in rekord box. Left it running until analysis is complete. Dragged whole playlists from rekord box "playlists" pane to the device. Where am i going wrong?
