This is a mash up I've been messing with. I know the loops work and the bass rocks. I keep messing with the mastering, eq, side chaining etc and I just cant get happy with it. What I think it needs is a quality accapella, or even a live rap/vox, something to act as a focal point for the whole thing. If any of you have a good idea how to add that extra layer I would be chuffed to collaborate. Then hopefully I will have a better chance getting the fecker to sound right too. http://soundcloud.com/djim-1/express-your-big-stuff-mash

@Cupe/Mitch: I havent heard anything so I am assuming you do want some of mine? They are all re-uploading to my dropbox with correct ID3 tags. Still at 192 kbps as I'm guessing you have something nicer than itunes to use for the conversion? Give it an hour or two and you should be able to DL all 8 of mine using the link I sent you in PM.

Buying DJ kit is like buying a car. Everyone will tell you what they think is best but you really need to test drive as many as possible to decide for yourself. I suggest you try and get to have a go on as many DJ setups as you can; these may be at mates, in pubs, clubs, bars, or in shops. Try and find out what is comfortable, ergonomic and intuitive to use for you. Then cross reference which units you like by using google to research build quality, reputation and price. Never buy on impulse. That said IMO if I was in your shoes I would consider between 2 paths: 1) Buy something 2nd hand and outdated but that has a proven and reliable track record. (like cdj800s). This way if you want to sell later on they will still have some value. If you buy a new unit for the same price it may just be junk by the time you want to sell it. 2) If you have a good computer and most of your music is already stored on hard drive do consider a controller. They are a rapidly developing part of the industry and you get a lot more for your money because they dont need all the processing power of normal CDJs (they use your computers CPU). The main consideration with controllers is if your computer can handle the software smoothly but this can be researched by checking the technical requirements for each bit of software on google.

overit replied to wrxfiend's topic in Rap & Hip Hop
So good to see someone on these boards using their decks as an instrument mate. Keep 'em coming -
Nice 1 Mitch. Half-expected you'd be the one to answer. Yer i have one of the aluminium unibody macbooks with an internal battery. But this machine is pretty much dedicated to gigging and is generally plugged in anyway. So if using it like that aint a problem I can live with it. Cheers mate

ez. My MBP is telling me to get my battery serviced. I've been searching macrumours etc to try and find out if I need to do this or if there are workarounds or even what may have caused this. There are so many fecked up threads relating to this topic though... Can anyone give me a simple low down or a link to a thread that actually makes sense please?

aw cheers YSM Good to know it works anyway... so the ball is rolling. I've thrown my 2c in with a sloppy freestyle. Who's next?

Nah Sol, There is zero midi mapping on the NS6 with ITCH. ZERO. If you download MITCH you can map keystroke functions to a midi controller but this will only allow you to map functions that already have keypad shortcuts in the ITCH GUI. There are no shortcuts to use rotary pots. Also: in Cerlas video the bass is not a wet/dry. He has unlocked the "super filter" easter egg included the software. He does tell you how to do this in his vid I think. When he is using it he is also mashing the bass pot but the effect is only controlled by the fx pot. The remapping ability is expected when we get an upgrade to Serato DJ but that is not until Spring 2013, which will be autumn to you, and probably late knowing serato devs work patterns. Hope that helps mate

My phone won't play it either. And I got this from youtube: "Dear djworkshops, Your video "10minmix.m4v", may have content that is owned or licensed by WMG, but it’s still available on YouTube! In some cases, ads may appear next to it. This claim is not penalising your account status. Visit your Copyright Notice page for more details on the policy applied to your video. Yours sincerely, - The YouTube Team" BUT - it looks like I can still play the vid on the forum... Is it working for anyone else in Aus?
-
I had ten minutes. Used ITCH for NS6 internal audio recorder, a webcam on a different laptop and iMovie to put the video and audio together. It's pretty much a freestyle which I'd like to think I could polish and re-record, but I never will, so here it is, warts an all as usual

For the record my business is as kosher as grandmas chicken soup. It wasn't always that way but once it became a bona fide business I thought it only fair to rep the industry, even if I thought the way they were doing things were wrong. How you gonna change a system if you aren't a part of it anyway? but i'm in the U.K. so no point me going on as our laws have different names to yours. anyway: +rep steve for starting the fred.

^ yes man, I used to use stickers to create loops. Obv kills needles, but needles are to djs what guitar strings are to axemen = disposable parts of the tools. Obv means you'll never be able to play the bit of vinyl under the sticker again - even if you remove sticker and clean it you will have a very worn bit of vinyl (where the loop was) then huge jump in volume where it plays the bit that used to be under the sticker. Obv sounds great and results in excellent analog sounding loops which maintain tempo even though the individual hits on the sample are not quantized = 100% original and creative sound. But boy is it a pain in the arse getting that sticker in just the right place! Old Skool

^maybe. I wasnt at any of these events, even I'm not that old lol but as far as i know these are the names and very varied origins that started the ball rolling I bet there's a standard incorrect wiki page somewhere if anyone can really be arsed. Not me.

^aye, flash is credited with inventing the cross fader. That's why many think he invented scratching, even tho he didnt. Grasso was a pioneering disco DJ and working on mixing and creating a journey I think? His roots are post 60s free love and gay clubs where freedom to party was the rule. Both scenes (disco and hiphop) were heavily influenced by the west indian "soundclash" scene and the DJs and toasters (rappers) that were doing their thing there. and all of those beginnings (plus a touch of northern soul) have given us what we call DJ culture today.

As far as I know Grandmaster Flash was amongst the first to release records based on the sound DJs had been rockin parties with in New York in the 70's. But Afrika Bambaata was doing much more. And Kool Herc was really the pioneer of that scene. Then Sugarhill Gang released Rappers Delight, which was a blatant rip off/homage of what every other crew was doing (using Chics' Good Life to loop and chat over). I may be wrong about all that, but one thing is for sure: In the history of the DJ the first people to release records are very often not the pioneers of a sound. Recording artists do their thing in soundproofed booths with no distractions. DJs play live to crowds innit? But this Jimmy saville peado first thought of using two turntables. He wasnt mixing or anything, just making sure the music didnt stop while he changed song.
