His music, as well as his work as a sound designer for film and TV has always been marked as forward thinking in approach and groundbreaking upon delivery. Henry's sound refuses to fall into a singular category, he takes in influence on many different levels and incorporates this into his live and DJ sets by forging a perfect balance of Electronica, Disco, House and Techno. Henry's first productions were released through the highly regarded Global Underground and Paradigma Musik imprints. These releases were instantly noticed by house giant John Digweed, which led to creating one of the biggest tracks of 2009, which was also named as Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. Released on Bedrock, Henry's remix of Guy J’s “Lamur” was regarded by critics and DJ’s alike as “the track of the year”. Following the success of this remix, yet another giant label; Renaissance commissioned the release of “Artificial Paradises EP” and “Madre Noche EP” in 2009 and “The Rider EP” in 2010. His rising reputation has earned Henry the honour of being asked to produce Balance Music’s 019 compilation. Following on from the likes of Timo Maas, Joris Voorn, Will Saul and Agoria, Henrys addition to this world-renowned mix series has more than lived up to expectations and has set a new benchmark in depth and quality. 12. For the first time ever, US producer Kastle is bringing his futuristic dubstep, grime & garage stylings to Chinese Laundry for an exclusive club show With special guest Light Year & support from Pablo Calimari, A-Tonez, U-khan, Audiobotz, C-Bu, Fingers + more Kastle is definitely a name to watch in 2013, head down to Laundry this Saturday 1st December to find out why. Full line up Cave Kastle (USA) Light Year U-Khan Laundry A-Tonez Pablo Calamari Audiobotz J-Mac Sand Bar Fingers Dj C-Bu Goodfella Doors Open 9pm Drink Specials from 9pm til 11pm KASTLE https://www.facebook.com/kastledub With the popularity of bass music spreading like wildfire across the world, San Francisco, CA DJ/producer Kastle has cultivated his own style of bass-heavy beats with a soulful twist. Teaching himself guitar and piano around the age of 12, Barrett Richards pooled his efforts towards electronic instrumentation about two years later. He began taking production as seriously as he did DJing during that time and involved himself deep into the Northeast rave scene. Though personal growth and 14 years of production experience paired with a degree in audio engineering a new sound was born. Kastle came to life at a pivotal moment after a big move from Boston back to his hometown of Pittsburgh in March 2009. After nearly a year of conceptualizing he knew he was working on something special. The name itself implies a fortress, a personal space that is used to cultivate a long-time love of hip-hop and R&B and fuse it with the magnetizing effect that dubstep, garage and bass-heavy music has had on Barrett and, really, the various communities of underground electronic music. LIGHT YEAR https://www.facebook.com/wearelightyear Light Year debuted onto the scene in 2010 with the now cult 'Night/Vision' EP, gaining some pretty high profile support among the likes of Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Tiga and Mr Oizo. His follow up EP "5 Girl's" received an even bigger reception resulting in an overwhelming demand for his remix work with everyone from Alex Gopher to ZZT demanding a little Light touch. Extensive touring throughout Europe and North America meant a series of sold out shows on the return home - from Splendour in the Grass to Parklife - and big name artists begging to remix his releases. Whispers of a revamp and Light Year 2.0 on the horizon can only mean big things and we can't wait to show you a sneak peak here first at Laundry.

  14. Boss Bass is celebrating 1 year of awesome parties at Chinese Laundry On the final day of November we bring you the one and only, the upbeats. In today’s heady climate of bass-fuelled dance music it could easily be argued that producer-DJs are the new rock stars. The Upbeats live performances are said to be some of the most unique and craziest sets in drum and bass today. The upbeats are not your everyday boring producers, after being armed with a bunch of micky fin and Aphrodite mixtapes the upbeats were ready to push into the world of drum and bass production. The upbeats started producing in 2001, and have already released for the likes of ram records, virus, commercial suicide, lifted and more. Their unique take on heavy drum and bass has led them to where they are today. With enough energy to rock the floor and backed up with genuine emotion and an infinite capacity to inject a taste of something different into their music, The Upbeats’ drag you deep into their own personal world of drum & bass. Don’t miss out on this legendary show at Chinese Laundry ! Set Times Cave Bassriot - 12:00 The Upbeats (NZ) - 1:00 Bruxism - 2:30 Laundry Phase One - 10:00 Pop The Hatch - 11:00 Hydraulix - 12:00 AutoClaws - 1:15 Shudder X - 2:30 Doors Open 10pm Drink Specials from 10pm til 11pm $5 Budweisers $5 Vodka & Mixer $5 Dirty laundry shots Biography In today’s heady climate of bass-fuelled dance music it could easily be argued that producer-DJs are the new rock stars. Climbing into that mould with a pair of schoolboy grins on their faces, The Upbeats have already been playing that role for years. Their anything-goes live performances are renowned for mosh pits, topless dancers (sometimes women) and crowd surfing, while their approach to writing hard-hitting, unique-sounding drum & bass is lauded across the globe. Nicknamed Terror Snake and Downie Wolf respectively, Jeremy and Dylan are not your average, boring producers. Meeting at school through mutual interests in surfing, skating and ‘being gangly teenagers’ Jeremy had to work hard to pull Dylan into the world of drum & bass. But, armed with a stack of Mickey Finn & Aphrodite mixtapes and an unrelenting attitude, the snake soon overcame the wolf’s natural propensity for rock music and, fortunately for us all, a love of fast breakbeats and low-slung basslines soon followed. This love soon grew into a passion for creating their own music and by 2001 the pair were balls deep writing their own D&B. Fuelled by New Zealand’s isolation from the rest of the world and its staggering natural beauty, The Upbeats’ unique take on 170bpm+ bass music has seen the duo work alongside scene stalwarts such as Ed Rush & Optical, Bad Company, Hive, Gridlock, Bulletproof, TREi, State of Mind and Noisia while releasing tracks across a plethora of the D&B scene’s most respected record labels. In the wake of such a prolific impact on the worldwide drum & bass scene, The Upbeats continue to push the boundaries. Working on producing an album for award-winning New Zealand live act Shapeshifter and collaborating with US bass music superstar Bassnectar this is set to be the most exciting season for The Upbeats yet, for precisely one reason: the duo’s forthcoming fourth studio album set to be released on Noisia’s increasingly imperial Vision Recordings. Amongst the incredible list of singles for legendary D&B outlets like Ram Records, Virus, Commercial Suicide, Subtitles and Lifted Music, and production and remix credits for some of the hottest names around, from MSTRKRFT to the aforementioned Shapeshifter, The Upbeats have displayed where their true strength lies; releasing critically acclaimed, boundary pushing and excitement-inducing long players. From their debut album on New Zealand’s LOOP Recordings through their sophomore offering ‘Nobody’s Out There’ on Bad Taste to 2009’s ‘Big Skeleton’ released on their own Non Vogue imprint, The Upbeats have consistently impressed with a deep understanding of what makes a dance music album great. Perennially packed with enough energy to rock the floor and backed up with genuine emotion and an infinite capacity to inject a taste of something different into their music, The Upbeats’ albums drag you deep into their own personal world of drum & bass. That’s a world which is infused with the duo’s sibling-like relationship, a propensity for having fun, unusual food combinations at breakfast time and an unnerving amount of insect-based facts. Not only are The Upbeats producers with studio skills, they’ve also got a few things which link them to all the best artists in history; bags of character, endless amounts of fresh ideas and a large dose of friendly rock star attitude. In August 2011 his track "I Can't Stop" was sampled by producer Shama “Sak Pase” Joseph for the hip-hop album ‘Watch the Throne’ by Jay-Z and Kanye West. To use the clichéd words 'meteoric rise' is not a stretch. The young and unassuming producer has become, along with the contentious American emo-kid Skrillex, the face of the new strand of dubstep. It's full-fat, incredibly heavy, with pop hooks woven cleverly in with the bass. In December 2011, Flux Pavilion was nominated for the BBC's Sound of 2012 poll, as one of only two independent artists on the long list. On 5 March 2012, his track "I Can't Stop" was used in the viral Kony 2012 campaign, and was previously featured in SSX. Duke Dumont Duke Dumont is a London, UK DJ / producer, well known for his DJ sets & “catch you off guard” productions. In 2006, Duke was crowned Diesel U Music champion, beating thousands of other producers to be considered the best unsigned producer in the world by a host of music industry judges, consisting the like of 2manyDJs. Previous winners for this award include producers such as Mylo and DJ Yoda. He then rose to prominence in 2007 with the release of Lean & Bounce, featured on his debut EP “Regality” on Turbo Recordings. A fusion of low pitched vocal hooks, with a finely tuned techno lead, combined with an unbeatable bassline, created one of the dance records of the year. Championed by the likes of Erol Alkan, SMD, Switch, Jesse Rose, Armand Van Helden and literally thousands more. E sentiment can be placed on his Djing ethic, the Duke holding down regular sets at the likes of Fabric, Razzmatazz and Bugged Out, whilst touring from Australia to the United States, Canada and the whole of Europe within the last year, making him one of the most travelled and in-demand DJs in the UK. His ability of blending deep house and techno, whilst contrasting tensions defines him one of the biggest underground DJs on the circuit. Krewella Fresh out of Chicago's West Loop neighborhood, emerging EDM outfit Krewella are already looking like be the biggest thing out of the next wave of the US scene. Formed in 2007.. Krewella (Jahan, Yasmine and Rainman) first caught attention with their video for "Killin' It." and have been gaining fans worldwide since the release of their debut EP ‘Play Hard’ . This will be their first appearance in Sydney. Facebook Event Here > https://www.facebook.com/events/488944421129099/
  17. On the 23rd of November Chinese Laundry are proud to present the She Can DJ 2012 winner: Leah Mencel! Leah’s credentials are impressive, having warmed the stage for some of the biggest names in the business. This femme fatale is unequivocally the Pied Piper of the sleepy city, taking hand-picked tracks, meshing samples in with surgical precision, and pairing these live mixes with ruthlessly effective acapellas to create flawlessly formed s ets with an energy that is second-to-none. In a nutshell, Leah is the perfect embodiment of a new era of female DJs-cum-producers. Leah has been working relentlessly as a professional in the industry for 3 years, and has quickly caught the attention of promoters and audiences around the country. She has most recently been crowned by the winner of She Can DJ 2011 securing herself a global recording contract with EMI and a weekly show on Party People, an Australia-wide radio show that reaches 600,000+ listeners. Her sound stays true to her much loved mashup/party/hiphop style, whilst being strongly influenced by the likes of dubstep big-shots Skrillex, Knife Party, Nero, Kill The Noise and Datsik. You may notice that a "Mencel set" these days has noticeable hint of dubstep, and having found herself a niche within the genre, Leah has been hard at work in the studio working with vocalists and creating both remixes and original tracks under the dubstep banner. Alongside Leah Mencel are the always killer: Kyro and Bomber! Having already supported the likes of Steve Aoki, Porter Robinson & Jack Beats, they definitely caught the eye of the public with their remix of Poter Robinson & Lazy Rich’s track hit ‘hello’. And just to add to the already awesome line-up is non other than Kid Sample. Starting out doing bootleg edits of tracks by various artists ranging from Local Natives to Daft Punk, Kid Sample went on to establish himself in the local dance music scene which has now seen him perform at some of Sydney's biggest clubsand has supported the likes of Noisia, Rudimental, Netsky, Borgore, Danny Byrd, DJ Hype, Jackmaster etc. This will be a very fun night and a big start to your Stereosonic weekend , or just a big night in general ! Doors Open 9pm Drink Specials from 9pm til 11pm $5 Budweisers $5 Vodka & Mixer $5 Dirty Laundry shots Bio – Ben Sims From early formative days earning his stripes spinning hip hop, house and rave on pirate radio, and at parties around Essex and East London, through the 90’s as an ever more in demand DJ, and on into the new millennium as a label boss, producer and internationally recognised techno legend in his own right, Ben Sims has spent all his conscious life exploring all facets of underground dance music Throughout that time, the man has honed his reputation as a tight, energetic mixer who skilfully weaves together his own distinctive blend of tough funk and hardgrooves, often using three-deck wizardry and plenty of dexterity. Be it at clubs like Fabric London, Atomic Jam, Berghain, Florida 135, or any number of festivals around the world, Sims’ sets are powerful, memorable, and unique, while constantly pushing the boundaries of a DJ set – utilising a mesmerizing blend of vinyl, CDs, and software. As well as carving a reputation as one of the world’s leading techno DJs, Ben has curated many of his own revered labels over the years. Chief amongst them is Theory – an imprint this year celebrating it’s 40th release, that counts amongst it’s supporters contemporary connoisseurs like Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, and the old guard of Dave Clarke, Robert Hood, Rolando and more – proof, then, that Sims is on the form of his life production wise. Riding high on the wave of critical acclaim from his cultured debut long player on Drumcode, 2011’s Smoke & Mirrors, an album that voyages into Sim’s unique take on techno, coupled with authentic house outings, thanks to guest appearances from Chicago’s Tyree Cooper and Detroit’s Blake Baxter, whilst also showcasing plenty of dubbed-out and grainy textures. Sims has put his name to more than 50 releases in the last two decades. During those years, there has also been a steady stream of high profile remixes of scene heavyweights, including Jeff Mills, Adam Beyer, Kevin Saunderson and Chris Liebing, on labels du jour like AXIS, KMS, CLR and Drumcode, all of which have won as much critical praise as they have crossover success. Despite his veteran status in the scene, Sims has always been keen to evolve. Alongside Kirk Degiorgio, he is co-founder & curator of Machine – a clubnight which focuses on new, unreleased, & upfront music; it’s primary home in London, but with editions all across Europe each year. Ben also hosts Sims & Friends events and stages at top clubs and festivals across Europe. Such shows incorporate Killa Productions sets with long time associate Paul Mac and feature regular appearances from like-minded talents such as Surgeon and others. After taking 3 years out to study, 2011 saw his return to the studio chair with the release of "Dread at the Controls" on California's cutting edge bass music label, Muti Music, which launched the 17-city Monsters of Bass tour with Marty Party and Opiuo. Culture shock: It was a big relief for his parents when James Pountney – aka Culture Shock – got his first sampler and sequencer and started producing drum and bass. At last, it took him away from dismantling electrical appliances to find out how they worked, and distracted him from improvising with violin, Clarinet or drums - that to his own account he used to play ‘at mediocre level’. James was brought up in a musical household with both parents involved with opera, and always showed a healthy curiosity about music, listening to anything from Jazz to house. He got hooked on drum and bass at around 10, when he first heard the music in 1996 on pirate radios. To his own words, ‘it sounded totally alien’ and he was blown away. He started reading music technology magazines, managed to set up a basic studio and started experimenting. James’ first release happened thanks to his father, who often worked with Dom (of Dom & Roland’s fame) dad. The result was the 2004 ‘Vega EP’ on Moving Shadow. It was well received but unfortunately the seminal label stopped releasing music and it was another two years before James found another home with the legendary Ram Records. Impressed by the production skills displayed on the Vega EP, Andy C followed the progress of the young producer and ended up signing him to his label, with the first track ‘The Bypass’ – one of Optical’s favourite tunes - appearing on 2006’s Dimension EP and getting tongues wagging on the scene. James was then given the chance to make his own EP, and ‘the third stage’ was released in summer 2007. It included the suave ‘Rework’, produced in partnership with the Brookes Brothers, and a brilliant electro-breaks track ‘Asteroids’ that fits well with James’ open approach to music: ‘I’ve been into drum and bass for a long, long time – he recently told Knowlede magazine - That is great but it’s all about bringing in influences from elsewhere. I am really into all electronic music and I listen to a lot of techno and electro’. With signing Culture shock to its prestigious stable, Ram are nurturing yet another talent destined to expend the boundaries of the scene.
