Chinese Laundry host the official Harbourlife After Party with Lee Foss headlining the cave, and Tkay Maidza in the Laundry. Few DJs have made such a dramatic impact on the underground house and techno scene over the last two years as Hot Creations label owner Lee Foss. We're incredibly excited to host him in the cave. With a sound influenced by the likes of Major Lazer, M.I.A, Outkast and Rihanna just to name a few, Tkay Maidza knows how to bring the party. Having played festivals such as Splendour in the Grass and Listen Out, Touring with both Nina Las Vegas and Citizen Kay, Tkay Maidza is set to rock LNDRY, this is one not to be missed. Full Line Up: Lee Foss Tkay Maidza (Live) Spenda C Danny T NatNoiz Jace Disgrace Fingers Dj Just1 Nine Lives King Lee Helena Ellis Biography Described by DJ Mag as “one of the most talented new forces in modern dance music today” and by fellow future house innovators Art Department as their favourite producer, Lee has quickly catapulted himself into dance music’s collective consciousness. Lee and his Hot Creations label co-owner Jamie Jones currently spearhead a whole family of like-minded producers that includes Robert James, Russ Yallop, Richy Ahmed, Danny Daze and most recently wAFF who are currently re-writing the rulebook of how to make evocative and emotive house music. FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/leefossofficial TWITTER: https://twitter.com/leefossmusic SOUNDCLOUD: https://soundcloud.com/leefoss Tkay Maidza is a young, Adelaide, Australian – based rapper, she is fresh to the scene but has already been around the block, having played Groovin the Moo, toured with both Nina Las Vegas and Citizen Kay, dropped her own Brontosaurus tour, and played a bucketload of shows between. As a steadfast addition to both the upcoming Splendour in the Grass festival and Listen Out tour lineups, the time has now become ripe for Tkay to drop her first single as a signee to Dew Process. Titled U Huh, this track has been months in the making, and it’s that delicious brat rap brand we’ve come to expect from this ADD-hip hopper. Catchy, poppy and littered with sassy delivery, this single does away with the potential cheese that its predecessor Brontosaurus had, instead carving a different niche to its shout-back-chorus originator. Saturday 1st November, Soapbox Events & Chinese Laundry are back for another load of LNDRY, with SUBB-AN on headline duties. Hailing from Uk and now based in Berlin, SUBB-AN is on a rapid rise to prominence as a DJ, producer and one of the most exciting new live House/Tech House acts around. Named as DJ mags ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in 2011 Subb-an’s prodigious studio talents have seen him release on huge labels such as Crosstown Rebels and has delivered remixes from the likes of Lana Del Ray, Noir & Haze and Jamie Woon. Full Line Up: SUBB-AN (GER) Kid Kenobi Alex Preston Friendless Fingers Chris Fraser U-Khan Nine Lives DJ Just 1 DJ C-Bu Brenden Clay Biography Named as DJ Magazines ‘Best Breakthrough DJ’ in their 2011 end of year awards, Subb-an’s prodigious studio talents have seen him release on Crosstown Rebels, Spectral, Saved and My Favourite Robot and deliver much lauded remixes of Jamie Woon, Lana Del Ray, Noir & Haze and Hollis P Monroe over recent months. Outside of the studio he is a regular feature at clubs and festivals all over the world including fabric (London), Watergate (Berlin), Warehouse Project (Manchester), Movement (Detroit), D’Edge (Sao Paolo), The Electric Pickle (Miami), Just Jack (Bristol), The Harry Klein (Munich), BPM (Mexico), Space (Ibiza), Hot Natured at Sonar (Barcelona), The Garden Festival (Croatia), and Basics (Leeds). This success hasn’t been earned overnight. At just 24 years old, Ashique ‘Subb-an’ Subhan has done much more in his career in dance music than many artists twice his age. He first started DJing when he was just fourteen years old and enrolled on a digital music production course at the age of sixteen. Since then he hasn’t looked back, graduating with a top degree in sound design from Birmingham City Uni in 2009. While most students spend their time at university getting drunk and decorating statues with traffic cones, Subb-an, along with best friends Adam Shelton and Lee McDonald, founded Below, one of the UK’s most cherished underground clubbing institutions. Drawing inspiration from summers spent at DC10 in Ibiza, Below threw its first party in the back room of the Rainbow pub in Digbeth, Birmingham back in 2005. Since then it’s gone from strength to strength, becoming an overnight success story, so much so that Adam and Lee ended up buying the pub soon after. Over the last six years it’s seen the likes of Sven Vath, Loco Dice, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler and Mathias Tanzmann headlining sold out parties that continue to draw crowds of clued-clubbers from all over the UK. During this time the main constant at Below has been Subb-an, the club’s star resident who quickly became a local hero, never ceasing to impress with his innovative DJing skills and occasional live sets made up of a mixture of his own productions and re-edits of his favourite tracks from other artists. Saturday 25th October, its time for some more LNDRY thanks to Soapbox Events & Chinese Laundry, this time with Dave Clarke (UK) & Some Blonde DJ. Dave Clarke, known as the “Baron of Techno”, is renowned for pushing the boundaries of what techno and electro can be dropping remixes ranging from John Foxx’s seminal synth-pop gem ‘Underpass’ to Gesaffelstein, Detroit Grand Pubas and Octave One. His sets dance along the cutting blade of techno and electro, backed up by a seasoned bag of DJ tricks in which his early hip hop roots clearly show. Aptly nicknamed The Man In Black, Clarke blends into the background upon arrival and lets his music do the talking, so make sure you come down and see what it has to say! Keeping things bumping in the laundry will be the yound protégé from Melbourne, Some Blonde DJ. Inspired by the sounds of Steve Aoki, Nervo, Sven Vath & Fatboy Slim, we are sure to be in for a big one, so make sure that you don’t miss it! Full Line Up: Dave Clarke (UK) Some Blonde DJ Jesabel Jaysounds Methodix GG Magree Fingers DJ Just 1 Nightwalkers Gemellini Biography Dave Clarke Dave Clarke is a DJ with an anarchist streak a mile wide and punk in his soul. Technologically, he’s an early adopter with the studio to prove it, but he also embraces sounds outside the staunch electronic dance remit, from Nick Cave to Savages to old favourites Bauhaus. Such music informs his attitude as, using Serato on a 13” Macbook Pro Retina for his ruthlessly effective, fat-free club sets, he pushes the worldwide boundaries of what techno and electro can be. After a break , recent years have seen him make his presence as a producer felt again, working with Dutch partner Mr Jones (Jonas Uittenbosch) as _Unsubscribe_ and dropping remixes ranging from John Foxx’s seminal synth-pop gem ‘Underpass’ to Gesaffelstein, Detroit Grand Pubas and Octave One. Not a week passes when he doesn’t live up to his nickname, the Baron of Techno, a moniker given him by the late, great BBC Radio DJ John Peel. As a DJ, Clarke plays out most weekends across Europe and the world. There’s the same attention to detail each time, his sets swooping whip-smart along the cutting blade of techno and electro, backed up by a seasoned bag of DJ tricks in which his early hip hop roots clearly show. Aptly nicknamed The Man In Black, Clarke blends into the background upon arrival and lets his music do the talking. That’s where he comes alive, where skills honed for years blow venues apart. It might seem from appearances that Clarke is not enjoying what he does but don’t let the grumpy image fool you. He loves every minute of it and feels humbled and blessed he’s able to do what he does. Naturally drawn to the magic of the stage, Alicia became emphatically consumed by a burning desire to get behind the decks whilst working as an assistant to the site manager of Australia’s largest dance festival organisation, Future Entertainment. With a back-stage pass and personal insight into the revolution that has swept popular culture of its feet, it wasn’t long before she owned her first set of DJ decks. Shortly after, Some Blonde DJ was born. Playing her first show in a modest St Kilda venue in January 2010 to Future Music Festival, Summadayze in 2012 and Ultraglow 2012, the journey has been short, sweet and plentiful. Armed with a reputation as the ultimate party starter, Alicia is a constant collector of fans, with crowds subscribing to her energetic output of influential EDM. Her mix-tapes have become the Saturday night soundtrack for the masses, heard spilling onto the streets from car stereos en route to her many residencies, which now spread stateside at some of Victoria’s biggest parties. Inspired by the sounds of Steve Aoki, Nervo, Sven Vath & Fatboy Slim, Alicia has her targets set firmly on the art of production spending most of her waking hours in the studio. Relentless and patiently mastering the craft of digital sound design, expect some big room electro house, cross-genre, club-thumping collaborations on the horizon accompanied by the Some Blonde DJ name in the credits. With plans to tour nationally in 2013, the vibing Australian club scene is in for a treat as house music’s freshest face takes control of the dance-floor Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Some-Blonde-DJ Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/some-blonde-dj Twitter: https://twitter.com/SomeBlondeDJ Web: http://www.someblondedj.com.au/

Saturday 11th October, Soapbox Events & Chinese Laundry bring arguably the most brilliant techno DJ/Producer in the world, Jeff Mills for a load of LNDRY. Championed for his music's relentless pursuit of hardness and his stripped-down, almost industrial DJ sets, Jeff Mills will be showing the cave just exactly why he is seen as the most recognised representative figure of Detroit techno. Still need more? Also on the night we have Australia’s own mad decent ambassadors Kito & Reija Lee providing the party in the laundry. Kito & Reija are a musical duo with many achievements under their girl power belt, with releases on labels such as Skreams Disfigured Dubz and of course Diplo’s Mad Decent. Strap yourselves in, this is going to be one hell of a party! Full Line Up: Jeff Mills (USA) KITO & REIJA LEE (MAD DECENT) A-Tonez Hatch Andrew Wowk U-Khan Fingers Dj Eko Dj Just 1 King Lee Nine Lives Acid Mouth Biography Jeff Mills, along with Robert Hood, Carl Craig, and Joey Beltram, is one of the biggest American names in techno. Championed for his music's relentless pursuit of hardness and his stripped-down, almost industrial DJ sets, Mills is the latest in a long line of Detroit-bred talent to take on an international reputation. A founding member of noted Motor City institution Underground Resistance, Mills helped build the artist roster and label ideology (as well as much of its back catalog) with partners "Mad" Mike Banks and Robert "Noise" Hood before moving to New York in 1992 to pursue more vigorously his solo and DJ career (with a resident spot at the legendary Limelight and a recording contract with the noted German label Tresor). (Although rumors of bad blood between the early UR crew have been denied by all involved, Mills' decision to split was apparently total, with Banks all but repudiating his involvement with Mills and Mills distancing himself from the continuing political militancy of Banks and the UR organization.) Mills' UR-related releases (including "The Punisher" and "Seawolf") are stripped-down and erratic, fusing elements of hardcore acid and industrial techno to the sparse Detroit aesthetic. Not surprisingly, his post-UR sound hasn't eased a bit, although UR's penchant for the four-track has been replaced by higher-quality production. TWITTER: https://twitter.com/DJJeffMills FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/jeffmills WEB: http://www.axisrecords.com/ Hailing from Perth in Australia, and now residing in South London, Kito & Reija Lee are a musical duo with many achievements under their girl power belt. Beginning their careers as solo artists, the girls saw success originally releasing music via Skream’s Disfigured Dubz, and Diplo’s Mad Decent, with whom they are still closely affiliated with today. Recently, Big Boi’s #MashUpMondays series featured the girls’ Mad Decent release ‘Run For Cover’, and was titled ‘King Sh!t’. This saw the OutKast member rhyming with T.I. and Ludacris over a Kito & Reija Lee track, something that while un-expected, served as an incredible co-sign from one of music’s heavy weights. The girls have known each other since the age of thirteen. The pair came from different musical backgrounds; however, they found a mutual love in electronic music, with Reija Lee bringing herself away from years of singing in rock and metal bands, and Kito adding a vocalist to a steadily rising solo career as a producer and DJ. As a pair, Kito and Reija Lee are unique, releasing music that speaks volumes in creative license; standing out from the crowd. With influences ranging far and wide from Kate Bush, M83 and Drake to Ed Rush & Optical and J Dilla, the girl’s catalogue of sound is extensive. Using their varying backgrounds they have been creating phenomenal music that has taken the online world by storm; featuring on the likes of Do Androids Dance, Noisey, Vibe, Okay Player, Wonderland, and XXL. Radio support has been strong, with plays from Skream, B-Traits, Annie Mac and more on BBC Radio One, XFM and Rinse FM. LEGENDARY DJ/PRODUCER SASHA TO HEADLINE THE FIRST OF CHINESE LAUNDRY’S GARDEN PARTIES THIS NOVEMBER He’s the DJ icon fans crowned ‘Son Of God’. Madonna and The Chemical Brothers wanted remixes. He’s held residencies at NYC’s Twilo, and newer clubs like Ibiza’s We Love... Sundays. The name Sasha needs little introduction – and now the pioneering DJ is headed back to Australia for a national tour, including headlining the first of Chinese Laundry’s rebooted Garden Parties on Saturday, 1st November. Chinese Laundry’s Garden Parties originally kicked off back in 2009 – headlined by none other than Sasha himself, so it’s fitting that the legendary DJ will be headlining this event once more. Currently in the studio working on brand new tunes and with a Kwabs remix due soon via Asylum Records, the Grammy-nominated, Welsh-born producer has been voted into nearly every top 10 of DJ Mag’s annual poll since 1997, his peerless command of the dancefloor breaking boundaries over three decades now. In August, Sasha had clubbers under his spell at Randall Island’s Electric Zoo festival (US), while future dates include Benidorm (Spain) and ADE (Amsterdam) come October... all before making his way down under. Sasha first fell under dance’s spell back at Manchester’s infamous Haçienda club, earning his chops at illegal raves and behind the club’s own decks. A cult-like household name in the UK thanks to 1994’s The Renaissance Mix Collection and the epic double CD Northern Exposure (Ministry Of Sound), it wasn’t long before savvy pop acts like Madonna caught on – Sasha’s Ultraviolet remix of ‘Ray Of Light’ quickly becoming a global club hit. Collaborations with BT and Junkie XL, music for PlayStation, 2002’s ambitious Delta Heavy Tour of the US... Sasha barely had time to take a breath. Then in 2004 he unleashed Involver – #1 on Billboard’s Electronic chart, the 10 track breaks compilation seeing him take on artists like UNKLE, Spooky and Felix da Housecat. Packing an emotional punch and one of the most seasoned tastemakers of the craft, the sounds of Sasha are one of a kind. The second of the Garden Parties will follow two weeks later, with Sasha’s previous collaborator John Digweed taking over headline duties, making Chinese Laundry THE place to be this spring. Soapbox Events is excited to present the exclusive Listen Out sideshow for UK duo Bondax, who will be playing live at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Thursday, October 2nd, supported by Kilter and Hatch. Having received massive airplay in the UK from BBC Radio 1, the duo have played major festivals like Bestiva and Creamfields and soon will be bringing their live show to Australia for the first time. Listen to Bondax’s new single ‘All I See’ here: https://soundcloud.com/bondax/all-i-see Supporting Bondax will be young Sydney producer Kilter, who has just dropped a new version of his triple j fave ‘They Say’ with Adelaide MC Tkay Maidza on vocals, plus producer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Hatch. Tickets on sale now -> http://po.st/BONDAX Biography “There's an old saying,” says George Townsend, “that it takes years of work to be an overnight success.” Wise words indeed, but startling too. There's no question at all that Bondax, the duo of George plus Adam Kaye, is an overnight success – but it's kind of hard to believe that they've had years to put in the work. After all, both are 18 years old and barely out of sixth form – surely theirs must just have been a lucky break, a couple of fluke big tunes that got spread on a wave of internet hype? Well, no – they really have put the hours in to get where we are now. “We met properly in year 11,” says Adam, “when we were doing our GCSEs. George had been producing for ages, I'd been in bands playing indie and stuff, and he asked me in to try and make some tunes. It was just fun at first, but the more we did it the more we realised... well, that we could make something quite decent!” So that's several years of George tinkering with computers and Adam learning his chops before they started working together, then two years solid of learning to work together before their tracks started getting buzz online then picked up by DJs and labels. It's a classic story of small town isolation pushing people together and forcing them to forge their own vision. Growing up in and around Lancaster, in the picturesque but not exactly buzzing rural northwest of England, the two lads had no scene to draw from or to fit into. “It's funny that we even met, we were in very different friend groups,” explains George with a laugh, “but then in a small town you end up knowing everyone so it was probably inevitable that we ended up doing things together” With relatively few distractions, no scene to enforce ideas of cool and uncool, and lots of time on their hands, they both absorbed music of a dizzying variety. George grew up on “folk. Lots of folk – my parents had tons of music, and I'd hear things like John Martyn, and loads of stuff I didn't even know the name of but just took in...” – then was introduced to dubstep by a cousin in his early teens and his tastes began to spread to all kinds of electronic music. Adam got into straightforward indie and rock, but quickly gravitated to those acts with a tendency to sonic experimentation, with Bon Iver and LCD Soundsystem being particular favourites. From the age of 16, as they worked together and begun to be able to travel further afield – particularly to Manchester where they could sneak into clubs with fake IDs – their tastes naturally became more sophisticated, and they worked out ways they could differentiate the music they were making. They mention George's 17th birthday when they went out to see connoiseurs' favourite Canadian bass-house producer Jacques Greene in Manchester as a key moment, and it's easy to see how the sensual, melodic, but still soundsystem-testing post-dubstep sounds of artists like Greene helped them form the Bondax sound. But those folk, indie and experimental influences hadn't gone away. As anyone with ears can hear listening to Bondax's highly individual tracks, only musicians with a broad understanding of harmony, song structure and lyricism could take the unusual twists and turns they do. Unsurprisingly, as Adam puts it, “it's only about 50% of the time we even have any idea what we're going to do when we go into making a track. The rest we just start and see where it goes – so it's definitely not 'let's make a club track', everything we listen to gives us ideas.” “And,” adds George, “we don't even listen to electronic music at home now we're old enough to get into clubs!” There's one more element, though, that sets their tracks apart: the tempo. Their tracks all come in at significantly below current house music's 125+ beats per minute, yet never drag, always full of enough groove and detail to make them sensual rather than sluggish. “Why do we make slow tracks?” asks George rhetorically. “Because Disclosure don't!” He's only half joking too: the boys are pragmatic enough to realise that they do need to differentiate themselves from that other hyped young electronic groove production duo of the moment. But there's far, far more to it, too: again, it's that immersion in song structure and unfolding melody that does it, that allows Bondax to drop way below the usual tempo threshold of club music but still send dancefloors overboard and get played on Annie Mac's show. Which brings us up to the present day. When the first buzz began to explode, George took the bold step of dropping out of his A-levels to dedicate himself full time to building connections and setting the stage, so that when Adam finished his exams, they'd be able to leap in to promotion and songwriting with both feet. Already they've played across Europe, rocked festivals and clubs and met some of their musical heroes, but they know it's only just begun. “We want to do this,” George says. “I knew I had a choice, to do my exams and do what everyone else does, or take a chance on doing something I love, going to parties, maybe building a totally different life.” And they're not just looking to the next dancefloor hit either, as Adam makes clear: “we're really conscious of not wanting to repeat ourselves,” he says, “and we want to use do new things. We're only just writing our album now, but we're going to have songs, but songs treated differently so the structures aren't what you expect. It's got to keep the interest and not just be trying to do what's current.” That's the same sense of perspective which George displayed in pointing out the work they needed to get where they are – and they both know there's a lot of work to do. It's unusual to find any act who are so clear about what's needed to go where they want to be, let alone an act that's just out of school. But Bondax are a very unusual act, and one that's arrived just at the right time. Though they may have all the hallmarks of 2012's “bass music”, the newest production techniques, tweaks and club rhythms, there's something deeper underlying all their tracks which gives them both pop appeal and the possibility of the longevity they clearly want. It's early days, of course, but there's every chance that in years to come, they won't be looked at alongside the hip club producers of the time, but but in a category with Moby, Gorrillaz, LCD Soundsystem and other such acts which have taken dance grooves to the biggest stages and the widest audiences.
