  1. It’s always a parade of chaos with Roseanne Barr. Not surprisingly, her recent interview with Israel Hayom (via The Hollywood Reporter) did not disappoint as the disgraced comedian blasted Natalie Portman, defended Kevin Hart, and even tossed her longtime co-star John Goodman under the bus. Barr took on Portman for declining to attend an Israeli ceremony last April, where she was to be the recipient of the Genesis Prize Laureate. At the time, Portland explained she did not want to take part in a ceremony that involved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “It was really sickening, I find her repulsive,” Barr said of Portman’s actions. “She was raised in incredible privilege of safety in the Jewish state and knows nothing about anti-Semitism.” Portman was born in Jerusalem and moved to the United States at age three. “She’s the darling of the left here, the Jewish left in Hollywood,” Barr continued, “she is a complete hypocrite who grew up in safety and privilege, like I said before, and knows nothing about what she speaks of.” On the topic of Hart, who recently experienced windfall for his controversial remarks on Twitter, Barr feels he should be forgiven. “Largely they’re digging up things that people did 15 and 20 years ago,” she argued. “Kevin Hart, his statements were really old and people grow up and change, and he did say he was sorry over and over.” In 2018, Barr was fired from Roseanne for tweeting racially insensitive remarks about Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. Her firing resulted in the cancellation of the series, which has since led to the spinoff program, The Conners. Last week, Goodman appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he admitted that “he really missed her this year” while filming the new spinoff series. Barr responded to those remarks by saying, “That was sweet of him but he should’ve fought harder for me,” She doesn’t blame him, though, as she went on to digress: “But nobody fights for anybody in Hollywood because it’s you next if you do. It’s very much a culture of fear and mind control and it’s run by people without a lot of ethics.” Later this month, Barr will visit Israel as a guest of Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s World Values Network organization to speak out against the ensuing boycott, divest and sanctions (BDS) movement currently going on against the country. 4. Big weekend for the hell on Earth that was 2017’s Fyre Festival. Both Netflix and Hulu released their respective documentaries on the controversial festival, which not only chronicle its rise and demise, but also detail the actions of those involved, specifically co-founders Billy McFarland and Ja Rule. One of the docs, if not both, must have been on Ja Rule’s queue because the rapper has since responded to the films on his Twitter. Today, he kicked off his Sunday, by tweeting, “I love how ppl watch a doc and think they have all the answers…” Twenty minutes later, he added, “I had an amazing vision to create a festival like NO OTHER!!! I would NEVER SCAM or FRAUD anyone what sense does that make???,” responding to one user that they “still don’t know shit” after watching both documentaries. He went on to point out that “@Hulu PAID BILLY!!! That money should have went to the ppl in the Bahamas… @netflix PAID fuck Jerry who also did all the promo for the festival… the docs clearly have Billy at fault but let’s blame the rapper lmao ok…” He also insisted that “I have receipts!!!” To his point, Elliot Tebele, who created Fuck Media/Fuck Jerry, the social media agency behind Fyre Festival, does serve as executive producer for Netflix’s documentary, while McFarland was paid to appear in the Hulu documentary. In October, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison for multiple counts of fraud. As Pitchfork points out, both documentaries reveal how Ja Rule assisted in creating the marketing campaign for Fyre, and include a recording from the aftermath in which he can be heard telling Fyre employees, “That’s not fraud, that’s not fraud. False advertising, maybe.” If you recall, the rapper apologized and insisted the festival was not a scam amidst the ensuing chaos. 5. Since the release of 2017’s Does What He Wants, Matthew Logan Vasquez manned the boards for Wild Child and launched an Americana supergroup, Glorietta. Now, the prolific Delta Spirit frontman is back with another solo outing, LIGHT’N UP. His third solo release, it arrives on February 22nd via Dine Alone Records. Written during a period of turmoil as Vasquez and his family cared for their ailing father, LIGHT’N UP marks a dark, introspective pivot for the songwriter. “If a record is the sum of a chapter in a person’s life, this is a yearbook for me. It’s who I was then. It’s what I was thinking and feeling – all the heartbreak and longing,” Vasquez says in a press release. “I usually don’t go this dark and put so many sad songs on a record.” He continues, “This record is about a period in life we all go through. There’s a season for everything, and for me this one was all about struggle, relationships and fear of change. If anyone is feeling the way I was feeling maybe these songs will be there for them.” Before hitting you with that pathos, however, Vasquez is sharing one of the album’s more upbeat tracks. The rich, rollicking “Trailer Park” is an ode to the Cedar Oak Mesa neighborhood of Wimberley, Texas, where the songwriter’s spent many a day. The below music video, directed by Michael Parks Randa, was filmed at the neighborhood’s Frank’s Full Moon Saloon, and aims to depict the area’s diversity and penchant for hard partying throughout the last few decades. “We’ve got Texans in every variety here: rednecks, hippies, Latinos, liberals and conservatives,” Vasquez told Rolling Stone. “But aside from that, we have a common thread of neighborliness, and we’re all just looking for the best bang for our buck in life. Being steps away from the Blanco River would certainly make anyone feel rich as hell.” Watch it below. LIGHT’N UP Artwork: LIGHT’N UP Tracklist: 01. Ballad In My Bed 02. Trailer Park 03. Vacation 04. 6. Earlier this week, Sony announced the production of a sequel to Ghostbusters. Not Paul Feig’s 2016 remake, however, but a sequel to the original two movies from the ’80s, coming from director Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman. While millions of fans expressed their excitement at returning to the original universe, others were disappointed that Feig’s story would not be further explored, particularly one of the remake’s stars, Leslie Jones. On Saturday, the Saturday Night Live writer and comedian tweeted: “So insulting. Like fuck us. We dint count. It’s like something trump would do. (Trump voice) ‘Gonna redo ghostbusteeeeers, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusteeeeers’ ugh so annoying. Such a dick move. And I don’t give fuck I’m saying something!!” So insulting. Like fuck us. We dint count. It’s like something trump would do. (Trump voice)”Gonna redo ghostbusteeeeers, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusteeeeers” ugh so annoying. Such a dick move. And I don’t give fuck I’m saying something!! — Leslie Jones (@Lesdoggg) January 19, 2019 To her credit, the 2016 remake was a success for Sony, grossing around $229 million worldwide, despite not receiving a proper release in China due to its supernatural elements. It currently sits at 60 on Metacritic, only 10 below the original. However, it should be noted that Reitman doesn’t plan to cast all men — or even all women, for that matter — but is reportedly looking for four teens, specifically, two boys and two girls. The four will likely be paired with the original cast. But, that’s what audiences want and Sony knows that. After all, Feig didn’t exactly read the room when he decided to disregard the original universe, and it was naive of him to think that audiences wouldn’t be hungry for that world again. Based on the reaction to this week’s news, they were. They have been. Source
  7. The Pitch: It’s the end of the world as we know it. And she feels … less than fine. She’s Sam Walden (Margaret Qualley), a lonely survivor on a beat-up planet Earth. Ships left long ago to live in outer space around IO, a moon of Jupiter. Here on Earth, the birds are dead. Fish are gone. Air’s poisonous. Lord knows how many people are actually left. But Sam, perhaps out of duty, boredom, or a sense of longing to please her scientist father? She carries on, searching for bacteria, testing mathematical scenarios on mutations, tending to her bees. She’s a loner in the face of the end times, just doing the bit of work that she can to help keep Earth alive, and stave off the fear. Out of nowhere, a hot air balloon with Micah (Anthony Mackie) arrives. It’s just that abrupt. And he’s not all that nice. He was going to be a teacher before the current situation, but now he’s looking for Sam’s father. The two forge a bond, one built out of desperation, loneliness, and a need for some form of living companionship In A World that’s running out of people in a hurry. They slowly weigh whether to stay or escape in a space pod to Jupiter, and have conversations about the past and what Earth was like before its total decimation. What starts as a sci-fi Walden becomes a serious Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, if those references work for you. And the fact that this review is desperate to think of similar, superior work this early on should tell you all you need to know. Gloomsday: In a subgenre that grows more creepingly relevant by the day, it’s refreshing to watch a more grounded, naturalistic take on the End Times movie, and IO takes an almost short story-like approach to a substantial phobia. IO is a tiny affair with worldly implications, told with limited locations and a penchant for a wandering visual eye which illustrates what our demise might look and feel like. Toxic drips in the sewer, flickering through flashlights as Sam drudges on with her research. An observatory bedroom, with plenty of opportunity to gaze and wonder as the stars shine bright above a dying planet. Cloudy vistas and sumptuous cliff-sides worthy of a slideshow on Trip Advisor. It’s like staring at a spacey album cover for 90 minutes. The characters themselves are minimalists, living in seclusion (Sam her huts, Micah his balloon box), and IO seems curious as to what might happen when two isolationists – not by choice – are forced to reckon with one another. To praise Jonathan Helpert’s take on pollution, people, and space colonization for its mumblecore leanings is easy enough. In small moments, IO can come across as downright poetic. Alas, people ‘fucking hate poetry’, to borrow the seemingly new adage. More specifically, IO’s poetry is drawn out with page-breaks, blank space, and far too many ellipses. The film’s pacing is draggy and often yawn-inducing. Micah and Sam’s will-they/won’t-they of love and escape is drawn in longform. Mackie can’t deliver a line without maximizing pauses for theater school heft (“I was gonna be a teacher… once.”). Meanwhile, Sam’s blue-eyed youth reads more flighty than enigmatic. Her science comes across as purely referential. She talks about “Nowak’s Evolvability Equation” inspiring a tattoo, while speaking about people’s ability to mutate. She’s optimistic that humanity can learn and save itself, see? Throw in some references to Plato, talk about gardening and bees, and, well that’s that for these two. And those are the few mentionable bits of characterization and interaction in between pregnant stares and hastily edited side stories that provide bare minimum context. In short, IO is just not very riveting, character or plot-wise. And that’s saying something when the fate of the planet, the greatest human drama of all, hangs in the balance. Sci-Why: As a human melodrama, IO is too faint. As science fiction, it’s glum and perhaps too accepting of humanity’s (inevitable) demise. And when the story runs the gamut from serene to sappy (and mostly immerses itself in the latter)? IO’s not worth saving time for. If you want a small-scale meditation on man’s futility and clinging to what life we have left, you guys watch First Reformed yet? Children of Men is also on Netflix right now. And frankly, there’s no shame in admitting we crave our own demise. It’s why disaster movies are so successful. There’s something comforting about outlandish fear scenarios, because they’re so unreal. So given IO’s lack of heft, we’ll totally give a pass if you go looking elsewhere. Knowing, 2012, Melancholia, they’re all out there streaming as well. There are better, bolder works on the same subject, and IO just isn’t captivating, scientific, or insightful enough. The Verdict: IO is dull, it drags, and it’ll beg the question: When will this, all of this, be over? Where’s It Playing? Netflix. Now 18% pricier. Trailer: Source
  8. Greta Van Fleet didn’t exactly conquer Saturday Night Live. The Michigan outfit kicked off 2019 for the series, but were anything but festive, performing their Grammy-nominated hit “Black Smoke Rising” and new single “You’re the One” with lifeless anonymity. Frontman Josh Kiszka, in particular, was incredibly stoic and appeared dwarfed by the vacuous stage. Admittedly, things improved for “You’re the One”, but they’ll wanna work on their stage show if they have any hopes of jamming in the future with Macca. Of course, it didn’t help that they were trolled by Weekend Update’s Colin Jost, who joked: “Sunday night will bring a Super Blood Wolf Moon, which is a rare lunar eclipse, and not, as I had assumed, the name of the band that just performed on our show!” Watch below. In related news, Kiszka spoke to Rolling Stone about “setting some ground work” for the band’s follow-up to last year’s debut, Anthem of the Peaceful Army, which they hope to release in 2019. As he explained, “We can’t wait to explore a little more of the Greta Van Fleet universe.” Read our own interview with bassist Sam Kiszka in which he discusses the band’s debut album, dealing with sudden fame, the polarizing reaction from music fans, and carrying the torch for rock ‘n’ roll. 9. When last we left Saturday Night Live, the show had found a relatively steady stride after a really bumpy 2018 season — oh, and we still had a government. However, much like our democratic norms, 2019 has started SNL off with some questions as to the stability of our institutions, their first episode back as stale as a Crave Case full of week-old hamberders. It didn’t help that this week’s host, Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Ms. Maisel, was completely wasted in another casualty of the SNL writing team. Of course, when the host is an established presence like Matt Damon or a larger-than-life persona with their own tics like Jason Momoa, there’s easy fodder for some great ideas. Here, though, the talented Brosnahan was largely sidelined in unfunny supporting roles that didn’t give her much chance to show off her Emmy-winning wit and rapid-fire delivery. So, what could have been a standout performance instead went largely marginalized. To her credit, Brosnahan managed to make the most out of her thankless roles, from an exasperated millennial game show contestant to a Barbie social media consultant to even a brisk Ms. Maisel parody about a much raunchier comedienne (Leslie Jones). By comparison, the SNL crew didn’t have much to do, either, besides make some limp jabs at the government shutdown, parody some Gilette ads this week, and entertain the Led Zeppelin carbon-copy antics of Greta Van Fleet (though they’re more than aware of the comparison). Nevertheless, let’s look at some of the episode’s other highlights. __________________________________________________________ SNL OPENS UP ABOUT THE SHUTDOWN “We were off for a month, but conveniently, so was the government,” snarked Colin Jost at the top of Weekend Update, just one of many jabs the cast took at the 29 days of the government shutdown Trump said he’d own but has predictably blamed Democrats for in recent days. The now-obligatory Alec Baldwin-as-Trump cold open played it relatively safe with a Deal or No Deal parody in which guest host Steve Harvey (Kenan Thompson, who’s gotta be sick of mostly playing game show hosts by now) tries to get Trump to end the shutdown by taking a deal “the only way [he] knows how – a TV game show!” The bit’s got the usual jabs — Chuck Schumer’s feckless, Maxine Waters is angry — but Kate McKinnon predictably knocked it out of the park as an energized, camera-hungry Nancy Pelosi “drunk on [her] own power.” Leave it to McKinnon to take on each new twist and turn in the Mexican soap opera that is our modern political discourse and offer deliciously entertaining spins on the latest character to take the spotlight. __________________________________________________________ JOHN MULANEY AND PETE DAVIDSON TALK UP THE MULE It can be a bit exasperating to see Pete Davidson show up on Weekend Update. Usually, he’s either burying the hatchet with Ariana Grande or legitimizing the grievance politics of far-right Congressmen with eyepatches. This time around, the addition of stand-up tour buddy John Mulaney managed to dull the pain, as the two talked about their experience catching last year’s Clint Eastwood vehicle The Mule. Excitedly regaling stories of a 90-year-old Eastwood driving unsupervised and engaging in not one, but two threesomes in that movie, the pair are a giddy respite from the rest of the otherwise-serviceable segment. The movie’s so good that Mulaney’s even willing to forgive co-star Andy Garcia for the one time he was rude to him at a Lakers game — truly the Mother Theresa of our time. __________________________________________________________ KOOL-AID SAYS “OH NO!” TO TOXIC MASCULINITY Some of the hour’s better sketches tackled modern social woes like “Millennial Millions”, a sketch show in which broke millennials can win riches if they can stand hearing the uninformed bluster of arrogant Baby Boomers for 30 seconds at a time. Though, perhaps the best and most topical bit was their fast-acting commercial parody of the now-famous Gilette commercial that tackled toxic masculinity (and subsequently sent dudes who were Definitely Not Mad flushing their razors down the toilet). The latest brand to get #Woke? Kool-Aid, whose commercial deconstructs the impulsive, imposing arrogance of the Kool-Aid Man’s penchant for shouting “OH YEAH!” and bursting through people’s walls. In the wake of the Kool-Aid Man getting #MeToo-ed (or would that be Fruit Punch Duck-ed?), the new ad points out that “the Kool-Aid boys of today will be the Kool-Aid Men of tomorrow.” Who says sugar water can’t come with a heaping helping of social justice? __________________________________________________________ OTHER HIGHLIGHTS Source

  11. Mark Zuckerberg will stop at nothing until every individual is on Facebook — or so it seems. According to multiple reports, he’s looking into ways to reel the teens back into his flagship social media platform. They’ve become distracted — even engulfed — in newer, hotter apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok. He’s simply not having that. Sources close to Facebook say Zuckerberg has spent months building what’s being called LOL. The specialty feed is expected to focus on meme-like shares, funny videos and other short, GIF-like clips. Categories are to include “Animals,” “Fails,” “Pranks” and a dedicated “For You” feed. TechCrunch has the scoop on LOL. Apparently 100 high school students have already been using LOL. Of course, they signed non-disclosure agreements and had their parents sign for them. Speaking to TechCrunch, an inside source calls the new LOL “cringey,” in that it feels like an attempt for Facebook to be cool and hip with the kids. Well, that’s exactly what it’s trying to do, so that makes perfect sense. We’ll have wait and see if LOL actually rolls out to its Facebook users. 12. West Chester Rising Star Just Keeps the Hits Comin Closing out 2018 with two buzzworthy singles, “Get Active” and “Jolly Rancher”. Jeff Kush shows no signs of slowing down as he enters 2019 with a brand new song, titled, “Whiplash”. Produced by Penacho, the West Chester-native continues showcasing his superior lyrical abilities on the track. Covered in sauce, slick rhymes, witty metaphors, and knockout punchlines, Kush is emerging as one of the biggest new artists to watch in 2019. “Whiplash” is apart of Kush’s current campaign for a highly-anticipated forthcoming album. In other news, Jeff Kush was recently featured on the new Abrax Phaeton single, “Beautiful Girl/Flings”. Withholding information and letting an audience member or fan squirm with anticipation before finally unleashing the big reveal makes it that much sweeter. Such is the case with teaser announcements from DJs, including this one from 1788-L. No caption. No other information other than just “NYC.” Surely we’ll be getting some other information soon, but until then, who knows what this could be for. 14. Spotify just made it easier (and safer) to stream music while driving. The new feature referred to as “Car View” is an updated version of the “Now Playing” screen — bigger buttons, larger text, and far less distractions. Spotify’s Car View only shares track title and artist — no album art — so it’s easier and quicker to read at a glance. According to TechCrunch, some users have had the option for weeks. However, as of now, the feature should be rolling out to all Android users. It will also be available for iOS users at some point, but the timeline is unclear. “You or another car passenger can opt out temporarily (until you next connect to a car) directly from the car view by clicking the three dots menu,” Spotify explains in a statement. “You can also opt out of the feature permanently from within your Spotify settings.” Drive safe. 15. Panorama, Goldenvoice’s east coast answer to Coachella, will not take place in 2019. After debuting in 2016 Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar, and LCD Soundsystem, promoters AEG and Goldenvoice have decided to take a break in 2019, citing issues with the venue. “While we have enjoyed our time on Randall’s Island and its great facilities, we feel that we have achieved all that we can at this site,” AEG sent out in a statement. AEG originally attempted to host the festival at Flushing Meadows in Queens, but ran into issues with another New York festival, Governors Ball, regarding its timing. Eventually, New York Mayor Bill De Blasio and NYC Parks had to get involved, and, writes Billboard, “negotiated a compromise between the two sides, moving Panorama to Randalls Island and pushing the festival back into July, seven weeks after Governors Ball.” Read the full statement from AEG below. Panorama will be taking a hiatus in 2019 while we continue discussions with NYC Parks to bring the festival to Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, where it was originally envisioned. We had a fantastic experience with Paul Simon this past September at Flushing Meadows and look forward to returning in the future. We were disappointed in NYC Parks denial of our permit application despite the long term benefits this event would deliver to the community and the park. While we have enjoyed our time on Randall’s Island and its great facilities, we feel that we have achieved all that we can at this site. We look forward to continued conversations with City Parks to explore making the Flushing Meadows site a reality. Until then, we thank the fans and artists who supported the event for the last 3 years of fantastic performances. Photo via aLIVE Coverage for Panorama This article was first published on Your EDM. 16. Kanye West has started a new series, Sunday Service, which finds the rapper performing gospel renditions of his catalog with special guests and a choir clad in Yeezy sweats. Earlier this month, we saw clips from the first iteration, and now a video has emerged with the entirety of the second installment. West and his collaborators perform cuts like “Ghost Town”, “I Wonder”, “Violent Crimes”, “Father Stretch My Hands”, and a new track that’s reportedly titled “We’ll Find a Way”. The choir concludes the service with a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There”. Around the 42-minute mark, West pauses in the middle of “Ghost Town” for a little commentary about his troubled 2018. “There’s basically two buttons in this game: love and fear,” he says. “And some of us are just programmed to be more scared than others. But I represent overcoming fear and still being here. They say, ‘You can’t do this, you’ll lose your career,’ but i’m still here.” (Read: 10 Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Albums of 2019) He also takes a moment to address the separation of art and the artist, criticizing the “documentaries” that come out about abusive or controversial artists. He also celebrates that he’s been with “no medication” for “about seven months.” While that’s fine for him, his continued demonization of psychotropic drugs, which continues here when he says it “numbs us” and “closes us off from the spirit,” is deeply dangerous and irresponsible. But I digress. On a lighter note, jump to 23:12 and you’ll see what looks to be David Letterman in the audience. Letterman, it was just revealed, interviewed Kanye West for his Netflix series. 17. Skrillex is weighing in on the whole R. Kelly ordeal. Not because he’s invested in the situation, of course, but because TMZ hit him up to get his thoughts. A quick rundown of what’s happening — R. Kelly has parted ways with Sony Music and RCA Records in what’s being called a “mutual agreement.” He has been dropped from the label. His releases will be shelved indefinitely. Really, it’s almost like his music will cease to exist. This comes in the wake of the Surviving R. Kelly documentary, which shares real-life accounts of his alleged sexual, mental, and physical abuse against young women. The disgraced artist has gone years without these claims affecting him, but with the introduction of the new docu-series, that seems to be changing. Back to Skrillex — he doesn’t necessarily think wiping all the R. Kelly music off the planet will be that easy. Hip hop legend Jay-Z is refusing to take down his compilation release with R. Kelly, and Skrillex believes he has a right. Although Skrillex doesn’t get down to R. Kelly anymore, he says he still hears his songs played in the club. 18. Start talking about Greta Van Fleet in circles and you’ll likely hear someone make a Led Zeppelin joke. It seems that ever since the Michigan outfit hit the scene, they’ve been paired with the legendary English rockers, and that’s certainly not lost on the outfit. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, frontman Josh Kiszka addressed the comparisons. “Obviously we hear the similarity,” he said. “That’s one of the influences of ours. But at this point it’s like, ‘Okay, we’ve acknowledged that. Let’s move on.’” When prompted about Robert Plant‘s prior comments — he joked they sound like “someoneI know very well . . . they are Led Zeppelin I” — Kiszka says he took it as a “lovely” compliment, adding, “You can’t put that more Robert Plant than that.” Although the band’s currently hyped about potentially winning a Grammy — he won’t confirm or deny they’re performing at the show — Kiszka said they’re already thinking about a follow-up to their 2018 debut album, Anthem of the Peaceful Army. “We’re setting some ground work for the next album,” he said. “We hope to get an album out this year. This time, we feel less pressure than we did before the last one. We can’t wait to explore a little more of the Greta Van Fleet universe.” One hopes that universe doesn’t include Zeppelin II. Okay, okay, we’re done. Source
  19. Last month, former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Lee Kerslake revealed that he had eight months to live in his battle with prostate cancer and bone cancer, among other ailments. He also expressed sadness in never receiving platinum records for his work on the first two Ozzy Osbourne solo albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. Now, Ozzy Osbourne went ahead and sent Kerslake framed platinum discs for both of those albums, a gesture that was revealed yesterday on Ozzy’s social media pages. The drummer, along with bassist Bob Daisley, had sued Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne for proper royalties on those two classic albums, eventually losing the case. The legal action had also sent Kerslake into financial ruin, who said in the same interview last month that the litigation left him “bankrupt.” Kerslake and Daisley’s names were left off Diary of a Madman completely, with their replacements Tommy Aldridge and Rudy Sarzo being credited in the liner notes. Moreover, both albums were re-released in the early 2000s with the drum and bass tracks re-recorded by Faith No More’s Mike Bordin and Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, who were members of Ozzy’s solo band at the time. The albums would eventually be reissued again with the original Kerslake and Daisley tracks in 2011. Regarding the platinum albums, the drummer said, “I’ve written to Sharon and Ozzy recently, a personal letter basically asking them to kindly send me platinum album certifications for Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, to hang on my wall before I die. It’s on my bucket list.” Ozzy apparently received that letter or saw the headlines that last month’s interview made, tweeting, “I’m so glad that Lee Kerslake is enjoying his Blizzard and Diary platinum albums. I hope you feel better. Love, Ozzy,” along with a photo of Kerslake holding the framed platinum records with a letter from Ozzy resting on his chest. I’m so glad that Lee Kerslake is enjoying his Blizzard and Diary platinum albums. I hope you feel better. Love, Ozzy pic.twitter.com/nhc8stldQz — Ozzy Osbourne (@OzzyOsbourne) January 18, 2019 According to the Recording Industry Association of American, 1980’s Blizzard of Ozz has been certified quadruple platinum for shipments of 4 million copies, while 1981’s Diary of a Madman has been certified triple platinum for 3 million units moved. Kerslake, who was also a longtime member of Uriah Heep, hopes to beat the doctor’s prognosis, saying he’s already done it once. “It’s prostate cancer but it’s moved to rest of my body I have now have bone cancer which is nasty one, so the doctor gave me about eight months to live. But I’ve been fighting all the way,” the drummer said of his health. He added, “Five years ago they gave me four years to live and so that gives you an idea. Not only have I got bone cancer I’ve got psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and two heart murmurs. As I said to you I’m fighting it and there’s no telling what can happen and they might have a new drug come out and I’ll experiment with it if it keeps me alive.” Ozzfest NYE Promo Metallica’s Top 5 Songs Tour Preview: Bring Me the Tool’s Top 5 Music Videos Favorite Setlist.fm Music Moments in Source
  20. R. Kelly was the subject of NBC’s Dateline on Friday night in an hour-long special titled, Accused: The R. Kelly Story. The broadcast revisited the disgraced singer’s sordid history of abuse and featured new interviews with two women who detailed their past allegations. The two women in question were former Epic Records intern Tracy Sampson, who came forward last year to The Washington Post, and Jerhonda Pace, who spoke to Buzzfeed in 2017. Both claim they were underage when they formed a sexual relationship with Kelly. Amidst their many harrowing details came the revelation that Pace had actually turned in evidence to Chicago authorities, specifically a T-shirt with Kelly’s saliva and semen on it that dates back to when she was 16 years old. Elsewhere in the broadcast was an interview with Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenberg, who not only continued to deny any allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse, but also went on to insist that “all of these women are lying.” He continued to defend his client, saying: “The record companies are abandoning him. Other artists are all of a sudden acting like they’re shocked by these rumors that are floating around. He’s having a very difficult time. But he is strong, he’s tough. He wants to put out his music and continue performing for people. And I expect that’s what he’ll be able to do.” His aired comments came only hours after Sony and RCA Records both officially announced they had dropped Kelly, while also following news that Kelly’s former manager turned himself in over terroristic threats. That was only Friday’s headlines. Rest assured, there will be more. You can replay the episode of Dateline here. Source
  21. Those planning to attend Panorama in 2019 will want to rethink their summer. According to AEG (via Billboard), the three-day festival is going on hiatus this year with plans to leave Randall’s Island Park for a permanent home in Queens, specifically Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Here’s the company’s full statement: “Panorama will be taking a hiatus in 2019 while we continue discussions with NYC Parks to bring the festival to Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, where it was originally envisioned. Until then, we thank the fans and artists who supported the event for the last 3 years of fantastic performances.” Launched in 2016, the festival has since suffered some major setbacks. In 2017, a stage floor collapsed, forcing several artists to cancel their set, and just last year, the first day’s festivities were canceled due to weather issues. Revisit our complete 2018 report. 22. One of many highlights from Above & Beyond‘s iconic ABGT300 set, “Flying By Candlelight” ft. Marty Longstaff, just released. “Flying By Candlelight” is a massive production with rave-worthy synths, lingering vocals, and a progressive soundscape that lead into an entrancing realm only A&B could create. It finishes off with a drop so amazing, it will burn in your mind long after you’ve heard it. Not only do we get the original version, but Above & Beyond are spoiling us with the official club mix and extended club mix all in one sweep. So, there are three ways to experience the brand new single. “‘Flying By Candlelight’ is a love song about a saviour who rescues our protagonist from a dark, lonely place, taking him through a spectacular night sky,” A&B share. “A bit like The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, but a bit longer lasting!” This new single is just the beginning. Above & Beyond just revealed they have, “Plenty of new music incoming over the next few months.” Get ready. 23. After canceling the remaining dates on his tour, ZHU is putting his focus on making new music. This new collaboration with Sofi Tukker is the first we’re hearing from him since that announcement. Grammy-nominated duo Sofi Tukker and ZHU prove to be a perfect match, finding balance with both of their signature styles for “Mi Rumba.” Cool and collected with just the right amount of dance, the single is an easy listen and showcases the talent of both artists in an effortless way. “I’m sorry to say Dune Tour pt 2 will be canceled,” ZHU previously wrote to fans. “It is time for me to make new music. Music that will inspire me and those around me. Music that I can play come festival season.” ZHU produced one of our favorite albums of 2018 and his sound becomes more defined with every release. We can’t wait to hear the rest of the new music he’s working on. As for “Mi Rumba,” expect to hear this soon on a festival stage near you! 24. Last year I went to Red Rocks for the first time to see Zeds Dead at Deadrocks V — two nights of Zeds Dead had my heart full of bass and happiness, including hearing two massive IDs that I needed in my life. The first of those was the collaboration with Snails and Akylla, “Magnets.” The second was this Delta Heavy collaboration, “Lift You Up,” out today. It’s not unheard of, but it is rare, to hear Zeds Dead do drum & bass. But honestly, after hearing them team up with Delta Heavy, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of sounds. Normally, we’d expect a dubstep drop first, followed by an uptempo drum & bass bridge or something to that effect. NOPE. This one starts out full tilt and hits you with that 174 right from the very beginning, and I’m all about it. Of course, there is a dubstep bridge, but it’s still fantastic. “We’ve been big fans of ZD for a number of years,” said Delta Heavy, “so when the guys hit us up about working on some music together we jumped at the opportunity. The record came together pretty quickly, the essence of it being this catchy little vocal sample and the uplifting synth riff. We’re really pleased with how it’s turned out and the reaction to it when we all play it live has been incredible, there’s a real buzz around it online. To us it really sums up where we are at musically right now. ‘Lift You Up’ is a real melting pot of styles that – like us – straddles the Atlantic, fusing the traditionally energetic UK DnB sound with a bit of the more dubsteppy halftime stuff that’s big in the US right now.” Zeds Dead continued, “This is one of our favorite songs that we’ve put out in the last couple years. It’s been really fun to play it in our sets and sort of have it as a cool unreleased track but now it’s time to let the people have it. In electronic music we always would like when an artist would have some unreleased music that you had to go to their shows to hear but you wanted it. Even though it’s only got a few lyrics to us this is a song about the human spirit and it’s amazing ability to triumph over adversity.” This one is already on repeat for us today! 25. It always feels like a holiday when Sullivan King drops new music, let alone a full EP. “Close the schools! Pack up for the day, we’re going home!” Except, I work from home and my job is literally to review music, so I can’t really complain when I get something like this in my inbox for the day. Sullivan King is out today with his new EP The Demented on Kannibalen Records, and let’s just say I love it. There are some new styles in this, an acoustic of an old fan favorite, a fresh collaboration with Grabbitz — what more can you ask for?? The EP starts out with the title track, “The Demented,” which sees Sully trying his hand at midtempo for the first time. It’s definitely a bit jarring to hear midtempo in a Sullivan King style, but it’s better than him just hopping on a bandwagon. He definitely takes the genre into his own hands and molds it with guitar riffs and his own vocals; plus, there’s still plenty of rock to go around. The Demented moves on with “Lie,” which retains some of the deep sound from the previous track, but ups the tempo a bit into a more electro house than midtempo rhythm. The structure of the song is also more indicative of traditional verse-chorus-verse than the build-drop-bridge of your normal EDM track. Grabbitz and Sullivan King finally collaborate after years of friendship on “Show Stopper.” There are probably countless demos on their respective hard drives, but this is something truly worth putting out. Grabbitz bears his rapping chops on this one, which you might have seen live if you caught Sully’s set at HARD Summer. The track also has a showtunes style bridge that makes this one of Sullivan King’s most diverse and musically ambitious tunes yet. And last but not least, it ends with a phenomenal breakdown that really showcases Sully’s love of Avenged Sevenfold. Finally, the EP ends on an acoustic rendition of his song “Don’t Care” from his House of Wolves EP in 2017. Nothing much to say about this one except that we love it. Listen to the full EP below.
