Last week we saw Broken Social Scene debut two new songs, “1972” and “Can’t Find My Heart”, during a live session on The Strombo Show. Today, the Canadian indie rock favorites have announced a new EP which will boast one of those tracks. Additionally, they’ve lined up a series of concert residencies. Dubbed Let’s Try The After – Vol 1, it’s slated for release on February 15th through Arts & Crafts, the label co-founded by BSS’ own Kevin Drew. Along with “1972”, the five-track effort features songs titled “The Sweet Sea”, “Boyfriends”, “Remember Me Young”, and “Al I Want”. With the exception of “1972”, the EP was produced and mixed by Nyles Spencer. BSS offered a statement on Vol 1: “The ceremony of dying generations without any guidelines for how to move forward makes these times easy for the mirror wars to continue. We can hide in the beauty of what has been stolen from us because somewhere there is mystery in not knowing. How can the ruined survive without a back up plan? Let’s try the after.” They’ve also unboxed a second track from the EP, “All I Want”, which is highlighted by the vocals of core member Andrew Whiteman. Take a listen. Vol 1, which follows 2017’s Hug of Thunder, is available for pre-order here. Let’s Try The After – Vol 1 EP Artwork: Let’s Try The After – Vol 1 EP Tracklist: 01. The Sweet Sea 02. With the government shutdown now a month long, founding KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are offering to feed TSA workers for free at their Rock & Brews restaurant chain, which has a number of airport locations. In a video message on the Rock & Brews Facebook page, Simmons begins, “Hey, you guys, we’re proud to operate our Rock & Brews restaurants at airports, and respect the diligent hard work of each and every TSA employee to ensure the safety, of who else, us, to travel around the world.” Stanley then adds, “While the TSA continues to work on our behalf without pay, we want to make sure that we can at least provide them with a delicious meal to show our support. We want you to eat well because you do so much for us.” The shutdown, which President Trump initiated in order to get a deal to build a wall at the US-Mexican border, is now more than 30 days old, with roughly 800,000 government employees not getting paid during that time. After the pair posted the video message, Stanley was invited to speak with CNN host Brooke Baldwin about the gesture yesterday (January 21st). “We just believe in giving back to the community, and our community is this country,” Stanley told Baldwin. “To have a situation where 800,000 people are out of work, basically because of political egos and strategizing, forgets the point that those are the people that make this country great, and we make sure that TSA workers and Coast Guard get one meal a day from us.” He added, “People need to put their political affiliation aside, and the priority has to be to get people back to work, back on the payroll, and then let’s figure out what the solution is. I certainly have my own point of view, but I’m not gonna share it, because I’m a rock ‘n’ roller, and I know my place.” See Stanley’s full interview with Baldwin in the tweet below. Lady Gaga may have suffered a surprise defeat at the 2019 Golden Globes, but she still has a chance to claim the ultimate prize after receiving an Academy Award nomination. Gaga’s feature film debut in Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born earned her a nomination in the Best Actress category. Once again, she finds herself up against family friend Glenn Close, whose performance in The Wife earned her the Golden Globe in the same category. Other nominees include Olivia Colman for The Favourite; Yalitza Aparicio for Roma; and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Even if Gaga loses Best Actress, she can still pick up Oscar Gold in the Best Song category, where her duet with Cooper, “Shallow”, is among the five finalists. The dynamic duo is facing off against Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s equally massive “All the Stars” (Black Panther). Other nominees in the category include David Rawlings and Gillian Welch for “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs); Diane Warren for “I’ll Fight” (RBG); and Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman for “The Place Where Lost Things Go” (Mary Poppins Returns). If Gaga proves victorious in either category, she’ll be halfway to achieving iconic EGOT status. Already she has six Grammy nominations to her name, and if A Star is Born is any indication, she’ll have no issue conquering earning a Emmy and Tony in the future. Winners of the 2019 Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, February 24th (click here to see the full list of nominees). Below, revisit Gaga and Cooper’s video for “Shallow”. Source

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks delivered one of the few great rock albums last year with Sparkle Hard. On March 15th, however, the Pavement frontman will return with less Jicks and more keyboards on his first solo album in 18 years, Groove Denied. For the last year, Malkmus has teased the release, referring to it as his rejected electronic album, though that’s not exactly the case. His label Matador simply suggested he release his more straightforward rock album first and have Groove Denied serve as a coda. It’s one hell of a coda, though, as Malkmus ditches the six-string for a smorgasbord of left-of-the-dial equipment and sounds, specifically (in his words), “Bass, drums, E drums with addictive drums, shitloads of weird old echoes, ableton, memory moog, roland 2080, 808, simmons drum machine, boss 303, guitar, vox, tambourine, shakers, organ, and Yamaha keyboard.” According to a recent interview with the Chicago Tribune, Malkmus worked on the album by his lonesome for nearly 13 years, recording 90% of it in Oregon with the rest of it having been tracked in Berlin. Despite all the changes, he insists, “It’s not that experimental.” “It’s just me with drum machines,” Malkmus contends. “Guitars are not the focus. They’re on there, but the guitar player’s not really the alpha. Towards the end, it starts bleeding into guitar-ness. It’s waters I don’t usually swim in. I don’t think it’s too much of a head-scratcher.” See for yourself with the new music video for first single “Viktor Borgia”, which finds Malkmus hosting a digital dance-off between Ariana Grande and a random businessman. The whole thing looks like something Kraftwerk would dream up. In anticipation, and possibly to clear up any possible questions, Malkmus has also released a special promotional interview. It’s only a minute long, but hey, Malkmus dressed sharp for the occasion. Watch below. Groove Denied Artwork: Groove Denied Tracklist: Eins 01. Belziger Faceplant 02. A Bit Wilder 03. Viktor Borgia 04. Come Get Me 05. Forget Your Place Zwei 06. Rushing The Acid Frat 07. Love The Door 08. Bossviscerate 09. Kendrick Lamar has a number of major accolades to his name, including 12 Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. The Compton rapper could soon add Academy Award winner to his CV, as he is up for Best Original Score at the 2019 Oscars. Kendrick and SZA’s collaboration for Black Panther, “All the Stars”, is among the five finalists in the category. Their biggest competition is undoubtedly “Shallow”, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s smash duet from A Star is Born, which already captured Best Song at the 2019 Golden Globes. Other Oscar nominees for Best Song include David Rawlings and Gillian Welch for “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs); Diane Warren for “I’ll Fight” (RBG); and Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman for “The Place Where Lost Things Go” (Mary Poppins Returns). (Read: Top 50 Songs of 2018) Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Sade, Jónsi, and Sampha were all on the shortlist for Best Original Song, but failed to receive a nomination. As for Best Original Score, nominees include Alexandre Desplat for Isle of Dogs; Ludwig Goransson for Black Panther; Terence Blanchard for BlackKklansman; Nicholas Britell for If Beale Street Could Talk; and Marc Shaiman for Mary Poppins Returns. Winners of the 2019 Academy Awards will be announced on Sunday, February 24th (click here to see the full list of nominees). Below, revisit Kendrick and SZA’s video for “All the Stars”. Source

The 91st Academy Awards still don’t have a host, but as of this morning, we now have the full crop of nominees for the annual ceremony honoring the very best in film. In a year where the race has rarely felt so close, there was a wide distribution of nominees, without any one film pulling especially far ahead from the pack. Yorgos Lanthimos’ unorthodox period piece The Favourite leads the year with a staggering 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and top acting honors for all three of its outstanding leads. Adam McKay’s vicious political docu-satire Vice picked up a Best Picture nomination, as well as 10 other nominations including Best Actor for Christian Bale. Roma garnered 10 nominations with nods in just about every major category for which it’s eligible. A Star is Born continued its charge to the Oscars with eight nominations, including acting honors for Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Elsewhere, Black Panther broke new ground for the superhero genre, becoming the first costumed crusader movie to ever rack up a Best Picture nomination, as well as honors in six other categories, including a Best Original Song nomination for Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Divisive contenders Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody each snagged five nominations, including Best Picture. And in what’s perhaps the biggest and most pleasant surprise of the morning, Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman was a major hit with the Academy, garnering six nominations including Best Picture, Lee as director, and Adam Driver for Best Supporting Actor. Among the other big surprises, Best Documentary Feature found no room for the acclaimed, audience-beloved Won’t You Be My Neighbor, and once again, Best Picture landed squarely in the middle of the 5-10 nominee range allowed per year, despite a strong crop of potential choices. And to the chagrin of many, First Man’s disappointing box office run seemed to have an impact on its year-end prospects, as Damien Chazelle’s look at the first moon landing settled for four nominations in technical categories. The 91st Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 24th on ABC. In the meantime, you can read the full list of this year’s nominees here. Chris Brown was arrested in Paris on Monday following accusations of rape. According to The Associated Press, Brown was detained with two other people after a woman filed a complaint with authorities in the 17th arrondissement of northwest Paris. A police official says one of one of the other suspects is Brown’s bodyguard, while the identity of the third man is currently unknown. The alleged victim says she met Brown overnight between January 15th and 16th at the club Le Crystal. She later accompanied him to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, where the incident took place, according to TMZ. Update – 4:00 p.m. ET: Brown has been released from custody, according to TMZ, and he’s addressed the allegations with a defiant three word message. “This Bitch Lyin'” reads an image posted to his Instagram page. The embattled R&B singer already has a lengthy criminal record to his name. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. Since then, he’s twice been charged with felony battery and was involved in a police standoff. In December 2018, he was charged with two misdemeanor counts relating to the possession of an exotic monkey and is currently facing six months in a California jail. This is a developing story Source

PEEKABOO joins forces with experimental bass artist G-Rex to create a sheer eargasm with their latest track, “Babatunde”. The record is out now via Wakaan records as a free download. Listen to and download for free Peekaboo’s ‘Babtunde’: The track opens with eerie screeches and slowed down vocals that quickly build into disoriented mayhem. From animal samples to atmospheric wubs, you won’t be too sure if this track is taking you through a jungle or gliding you through a black hole. Together, PEEKABOO and G-Rex lace the song with industrial glitches which pays homage to their city of origin, Detroit. Each Producer is Crafting their Own Signature Bass Style. With his distorted basslines and otherworldly vibrations, PEEKABOO is bound to blast you to another dimension. Liquid Stanger’s Wakaan label welcomed the free-formed bass artist last year for PEEKABOO’s debut EP, Imposters. Shortly after, he followed up with a second EP entitled Maniac, later in 2018. His tracks disbursed through the festival circuit and caught attention from REZZ, RL Grime, Bassnectar, and Dubloadz. PEEKABOO even dropped a collab with Bassnectar, and toured nationwide. He has shared stages with: Liquid Stranger, Dirt Monkey, Caspa and many more. The Detroit native currently resides in Los Angeles, and is bringing the wonkiest wubs to the West Coast bass scene. G-Rex is merging high energy trap with dark drippy dub to create his unique style of cold blooded bass. He has garnered support from Skrillex, Excision, and Zeds Dead. WAKAAN also picked up G-Rex for his Rift EP. Additionally, his latest release “Heretic” is a collab with one of OWSLA’s filthiest beat-makers: Ghastly. G-Rex is on the move and his next stop is Liquid Stranger’s 37 date Infinity Tour. Check to see if this breakout artist is dropping by your city to unleash some experimental dubstep. Anastasia Kristensen is a name that has surfaced on a global scale in the past year or so. For the uninitiated, Anastasia was born in Moscow, but moved to Copenhagen when she was 15. It was there that she discovered the sounds of ">chip-tune music. The 8-bit sounds was what incepted electronic music into her mind. It was in Anastasia’s 20’s where she came across the craft of DJ whilst studying IT for health care. It was never her intention to take the skill onto the global circuit, but her career has progressed to the point where it is now in a very organic manner. One point of difference that Anastasia carries is her understanding of ballet. Her father wanted her to understand the artform. ‘I think it influenced me quite a lot in the sense of understanding rhythm and beauty, aesthetics, and giving me a general curiosity for the arts. I think that’s where it comes from, in general. An understanding of harmony and melody comes from ballet, too” says Anastasia. Now with 5 releases under her belt, Kristensen is set to make the long journey down to Australia for DJ sets in Sydney and Melbourne. We can all thank Melbourne events group Bunker for the tour. Check out the below details: Feb 22nd – Melbourne: Bunker presents Anastasia Kristensen Feb 23rd – Sydney: Control: Anastasia Kristensen & Lady Blacktronika Source

“Oh, my shrink was right, God does hate me!” — Jay Sherman When it premiered Jan. 24, 1994, The Critic had everything going for it. Written by Simpsons showrunners Al Jean and Mike Reiss, with future Superbad writer-director Judd Apatow in the writer’s room, it had a voice cast that included SNL star Jon Lovitz, Simpsons alum Nancy Cartwright, and voice-acting legends Maurice LeMarche and Tress MacNeille. Hell, the theme music was composed by Hans Zimmer. So why did it fail? Cut short after two seasons, everything that made The Critic so unique and wonderful ultimately ended up working against it. The New York humor of Seinfeld was just starting to catch on, but The Critic was such a love letter to Manhattan that jokes about a show called “English for Cab Drivers” and Mario Cuomo running the NYC Marathon may not have landed outside of the tri-state area. Jay was a snob who mocked the movies that most of the audience liked — Jurassic Park, Home Alone … hell, if you made The Merchant of Venice starring Keanu Reeves right now, it would be the top movie at the box office for weeks. Jay Sherman himself was also hard for a large audience to latch on to. The Simpsons had a character for the whole family. But it was hard for kids — who, at that point, were still the primary consumers of animation — or women to find a character to identify with. Jay was full of sarcasm and self-loathing, and a balding, middle-aged failure wasn’t exactly a character viewers wanted to identify with. And yet, a handful of us did. We cared about Jay because the world seemed so against him all the time. His boss was insane, his makeup lady was dismissive, his best friend was far more successful, handsome, and taller. As a kid, I laughed along with Jay’s misfortune. As an adult with a tough job and a Twitter account full of writers with bigger book advances and more success, I feel his misery deep in my gut. The addition of Alice Tompkins in season two was a welcome change of pace, giving female viewers someone to connect with, as well as creating a sweet romantic tension for Jay, who up until this point was the subject of ridicule. These were both people who had been hurt — Alice’s country singer husband, Cyrus, cheated on her so much that he wrote an entire album devoted to his unfaithfulness — but both refused to let the world break them. But it wasn’t enough, and in May 1995, the show was cancelled. It would be re-run in syndication periodically, and a short-lived and poorly received webseries ran in 2001. And yet, Sherman endures. A few weeks ago I pitched “What was your favorite line from The Critic?” to my Twitter followers, and the replies were delightful. No two people picked the same line — some went for the classics (“Full of country goodness and green pea-ness. That’s terrible. I quit.” And “It’s a Duketastrophe.”) while others went for the obscure, among them, “Take that, Guernica” and “I’m the friggin’ building engineer. Peter Pancakes over here has damaged the school roof unfixably!” The people who loved this show still love this show. Perhaps one of the most clever things about The Critic was that it was clearly grounded in reality. It was never afraid to be a little strange. No one ever really questioned ex-governor Franklin Sherman’s curious behavior — he didn’t ask to be named Secretary of Balloon Doggies; after all, the Balloon Doggies demanded it — or why the pilot was, in fact, a penguin with a drinking problem. The show set up its jokes so effortlessly that it isn’t until Alice acknowledges that it’s a little strange that not one, but two men in the room keep hot-buttered biscuits in their pants that you realize, along with Jay, “Oh, you were talking to him!” (Him being Duke Phillips, who started Phillips Broadcasting from a humble chicken and waffles franchise, yet always remembers his roots, right down to the singing hillbilly bears.) Of course, like so much comedy from the ’90s, there are some cringey points. There’s a lot of uncomfortable fat-shaming and homophobia/transphobia that just wouldn’t and shouldn’t be acceptable to modern audiences. But it’s funny to watch so many of the movie parodies become real, such as Home Alone 5, where 23-year-old Kevin is left, surprise, home alone — when Macaulay Culkin, now 38, did almost the exact same thing in December, recreating his iconic scenes for Amazon Alexa. And although we never got Jeremy Hawk as a colorblind detective with a dog partner in Rubik’s Cube (although Hollywood agency CAA did acquire the rights to the toy in 2010), we have The Lego Movie (and its billion spin-offs), Battleship, and the forthcoming Ridley Scott-helmed Monopoly to tide us over. I am still holding out hope for The Nightmare Before Hanukkah. THE CRITIC, 1994-95, (c)Columbia Pictures Television I spent a lot of time in New York visiting my grandmother during the years The Critic ran, and it is in so many ways like home movies, a testimony to the Manhattan that is long gone — not just the Twin Towers in the opening credits, but the last remnants of jokes about the filth of Times Square, Ed Koch, Cats on Broadway, even a Trump Tower joke. The old Jewish-neighborhood Upper West Side of my youth is vanishing, and the closest anyone has come to capturing Jay Sherman’s NYC is John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s Oh Hello! On Broadway, alternating jokes about Shake Shack with a genuine affection for the olive bar at Fairway on 72nd and Broadway. And last summer, Mike Reiss was in Cooperstown, where I work as the Managing Editor of the Hometown Oneonta/Freeman’s Journal newspaper, speaking at the Baseball Hall of Fame on the 25th anniversary of “Homer at the Bat”. After the panel discussion, I nervously approached him and made Mayor Jeff Katz introduce me. As he shook my hand, I told him how much I loved The Critic, how so much of it remains in my lexicon, and how I once ate an entire bowl of broccoli because my mom told me it was the only way she would let me watch it, and his face lit up. “I don’t hear that too often,” he said. Maybe he needs to hear it more. Source

The Backstreet Boys are about to drop DNA, their first new album in six years. We thought it’d be fun to look back and see if the boy band trend was actually as bad as we remember. Surprisingly, we found some songs we didn’t totally mind hearing again. Boy bands. The scourge of the rock world. The leech of R&B culture. The one thing bro-country and aggro-metal feel comfortable sneering at. It’s been 19 years since Eminem famously took homophobic shots at the music style in “Marshall Mathers”, and though the homophobic insults are cringe-worthy today, there are still millions of music fans who take pleasure in seeing the cookie-cutter genre slammed so viciously. But maybe society has grown up enough to be able to admit that not all boy band songs suck. In fact, some of them might be good, or great even. Blasphemous words to some, but it’s true. If you can overlook the cheesy music videos, throngs of screaming tweens, horrid fashion, formulaic lyrics, arguments over who was the cute one versus the heartthrob, MTV dominance, those ridiculous Tiger Beat posters… um, what was I defending? Oh right, if you can get over all of that, you might realize that these groups actually had some talent, and you might even find a song or two you could actually praise. Okay, maybe that’s asking too much, but there has to be some songs that we can come together on and agree don’t suck. With that in mind, we combed through the genre to find 10 songs that actually show boy bands in a better light than what the public perception is. There are certainly more songs that you could use in this argument, though to be fair, probably dozens more that could undo this whole point. We’ll save that list for next time, and in the meantime, let’s be optimistic for a moment and find the good in the bad of boy band music. Take a deep breath because here we go… __________________________________________________________ Source

It was roughly a year and a half ago that we first heard of Emin Agalarov, a Russian pop star who allegedly, with the help of publicist Rob Goldstone, helped arrange Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Kremlin-linked Russian lawyer at Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign in order to get dirt on Hillary Clinton. Now, Agalarov has announced he’s canceling an upcoming tour of North America for reasons his lawyer says are “most definitely” connected to the ongoing probe into Russian election interference led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In a video posted to Facebook, Agalarov says he’s canceling his tour “against his will,” noting in an accompanying message that the situation is “due to circumstances beyond [his] control.” A lawyer for Agalarov told NBC News that he made the decision for Agalarov. “It has nothing to do with any substance,” he said. “He could come and do the concert but we don’t want him to be subpoenaed or held under a material witness warrant or anything else.” He added that Agalarov is “happy” to speak to Mueller’s team on a voluntary basis. Agalarov’s father is the Azerbaijani-Russian oligarch Aras Agalarov, who was previously in talks with the elder Trump about a Trump Tower in Russia, though not the one connected to former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen that’s been in the news as of late. Those talks eventually died out, but have been an enduring part of the Special Counsel’s probe. In 2013, Trump appeared in a music video for Agalarov in which he fired the singer in an Apprentice-like board room. Since then, Agalarov released another music video for a song called “Got Me Good”, which features lookalikes of Trump, Hillary Clinton, and adult film star Stormy Daniels. Source

If you own a TV, you’ve probably seen those gross Skittles commercials where the candies grow on peoples’ skin like a fungus. Keeping with their absurdist approach to marketing, the company will eschew buying a traditional Super Bowl ad in favor of staging a 30-minute Broadway musical on the afternoon of the game. Today it was revealed that Dexter actor Michael C. Hall, veteran of both screen and stage, will star in the production, which was written by playwright Will Eno with music by Smash alum Drew Gasparaini. It will play only once. Skittles shared a video to go along with the announcement. In it, Hall speaks to a psychiatrist and, oddly, a scarecrow who represents Hall’s anxiety over the project. The whole thing is very self-aware, with the psychiatrist asking why people would “buy a ticket to see an ad.” Later, she deadpans to Hall, ““Nobody here is judging you, we just think you make terrible career decisions.” Whether or not that’s true (and it may be if you’ve seen Gamer) remains to be seen, but you can check it out for yourself by buying a ticket to the event, which unfolds at New York City’s Town Hall theater at 1 p.m. ET on February 3rd. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Source

Earlier today, it was reported that a woman had allegedly raped on the dance floor of Atlanta’s Opera Nightclub and no one on the club staff assisted or saw it. Whether it’s in light of that news or not, Zedd has canceled a show at the venue; another promoter putting on a forthcoming show with Ciszak and Bot has just relocated their event, as well, and that’s definitely due to today’s news. Hey guys. I’m sorry I will no longer be performing at Opera Atlanta on February 1st. I’m looking forward to coming back to Atlanta ASAP. — Zedd (@Zedd) January 21, 2019 More than ever, promoters and artists are able to put their money where their mouth is and stand up for their morals and principles. In effect, if a club is accused of doing nothing when a patron is allegedly being raped on their dance floor, they can move the show. We applaud subtle and Zedd for the move — it will be interesting to see what comes of the police inquiry into the situation from this past weekend. Netflix got its trailer out first, but Hulu beat it to the punch with their own documentary examining the events leading up to and after the tragic Fyre Festival in 2017. Both streaming companies released their own documentaries last week, Fyre Fraud on Hulu and simply Fyre on Netflix. If you went out this weekend, chances are someone brought up the two docs. Did you see the Fyre doc? Yeah, the Netflix one. I haven’t seen the Hulu one yet. Ah yeah, I really need to watch the Netflix one. The Hulu one is really good. Sound familiar? If you haven’t seen either yet, or only seen one, and you’re wondering if it’s worth it to watch the other or both — it is. Both documentaries cover generally the same timeline and content: from the early days of Billy McFarland’s Magnesis and the Fyre app, for which the festival was supposed to be a promotional outlet, but we know how that turned out; to the weeks and days leading up to the event; to the moment that influencers and attendees arrived and the fallout that followed. The differences between the docs come from where the footage originated. Netflix partnered with Vice Media and Fuck Jerry, both of whom were involved in the production of the festival to some extent. Fuck Jerry was hired to do marketing for Fyre and had a dedicated film crew following around production staff, which is how they were able to compile such unique, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. Hulu’s big draw was an exclusive interview with Billy McFarland (which McFarland was actually paid for, a big journalistic ethical no-no). It also used more anecdotal footage from sitcoms and social media, as well as memes and interviews with various journalists. So which should you watch? I’m personally a fan of more story-driven content, and Netflix excels in that regard. If you’re looking for more of a fact-driven, actual documentary-style footage, Hulu may be more your cup of tea. Regardless, you’ll get some information in one that you won’t get in the other, and vice versa. No matter what, the final message to take home is that Fyre Festival was meant to be a promotional vehicle for a consumer/booking app, which ended up taking on a life of its own, and crashed & burned to an incredibly epic degree. It’s astonishing that the festival was allowed to even have a first day. And you probably don’t know the extent of it all until you watch one of these docs. New music from J. Cole is imminent. The Dreamville rapper has announced the release of “Middle Child”, which will drop Wednesday, January 23rd at 9:00 p.m. The track reunites J. Cole with producer T-Minus, who helmed “Kevin’s Heart” from his 2018 LP, KOD. The origins of the single are unclear, but J. Cole is known to be working on several projects at the moment, including a third volume in Dreamville Records’ Revenge of the Dreamers compilation series as well as a previously announced solo album called The Fall Off. Earlier this week, J. Cole said sessions for Revenge of the Dreams Vol. 3 had been completed. The Revengers sessions are done thank you to every artist and producer that came through. I love y’all, that shit was beautiful. Next step, finish the songs and let the feel em. — J. Cole (@JColeNC) January 17, 2019 Source

WARNING: This post contains some vulgar language and explicit content. Read at your own discretion. What was once one man’s real, living nightmare is going down in history as the most legendary anecdote to come out of Fyre Festival. Of course, we’re talking about the notorious dick sucking story from Netflix’s Fyre documentary. As people draw lines comparisons between Hulu’s documentary and that of Netflix, there’s a clear line in the sand between one versus the other. One describes event producer Andy King‘s near run-in with a penis to get trucks full of Evian water across the boarder. “Billy [McFarland] called and said, ‘Andy, we need you to take one big thing for the team.,” King explains on-camera in the newly released Fyre documentary. “And I said, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve been taking something for the team every day.’ “He said, ‘Well, you’re our wonderful gay leader and we need you to go down, will you suck dick to fix this water problem?’ And I said, ‘Billy, what?’ And he said, ‘Andy, if you will go down and suck Cunningham’s dick, who is the head of customs, and get him to clear all of the containers with water, you will save this festival.’” This is the same guy who admits he would break into tears whenever he was alone for a second, as Fyre became more and more out of his control. King was fully prepared to go down, to the festival site and otherwise, if it meant keeping the festival afloat — and more importantly, the thirst of attendees quenched. Thankfully, customs let the water go with no dirty deeds done, but the festival failed miserably anyways. Still, this guy is some kind of hero. “Can you imagine, in my 30 years of career that this was what I was going to do?,” he says. “I was going to do that, honestly, to save the festival.” Naturally, Twitter’s commentary about the dick sucking story is on point. Never forget. #FyreFestival dividing my life into before and after getting to the dick sucking portion of the fyre fest documentary — david bynch (@soalexgoes) January 19, 2019 imagine sucking dick for fyre festival — Big Chungus (@broazay) January 20, 2019 At first I thought the Netflix #fyre documentary wasn’t as good as the Hulu one…but then I got to the dick sucking story — Married In MedSchool (@MarryNMedSchool) January 19, 2019 Fiji water I’d understand but Evian? For a trilogy that was never overwhelmingly successful in its time, The Mighty Ducks and its two sequels have stuck around in the cultural consciousness in a way not many of their peers can match. The story of a scrappy Minneapolis team and its law-dodging coach wound up being one of the more memorable family movies of its era, and even the outlandish sequels (which sent its team to face Icelandic twentysomething “kids” in a youth Olympics, and then to a Dickensian private school) introduced the concept of ducks flying together to the American mainstream, and remains a staple of dorm rooms and overenthusiastic parents’ VHS collections to this day. Over the weekend, several members of the original cast were spotted at an Anaheim Ducks game, where they took the ice in the classic Ducks colors and were filmed for an unknown purpose. (We’re guessing a Super Bowl commercial, but who knows?) Pete & Pete alum Danny Tamberelli initially released a photo set through his Instagram account: Tamberelli (Tommy Duncan) was joined by Kenan Thompson (Russ Tyler), Vincent LaRusso (Adam Banks), Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine (Julie “The Cat” Gaffney), and Garette Ratliff Henson (Guy Germaine). It could’ve been a reunion, or just a friendly Anaheim-related branding opportunity, but we’re always happy to see the Quack Attack back in action. Some mighty great people joined us at today’s game! Spotify has been trying to figure out a way to handle the existence of problematic artists on its platform since back in the summer. It started with a Hate Content & Harmful Conduct policy that drew controversy after the streamer removed artists like XXXTentacion and R. Kelly. That policy ended up being pulled, but now Spotify seems to have hit upon another solution: put the power in users’ hands. The music streaming platform has quietly launched a new “Don’t play this artist” function, first spotted by Thurrott. By clicking on the button found on an artist’s main page, you can essentially mute them from your Spotify account. While songs by any muted artist will still appear on playlists, radio, and even searches, Spotify will simply skip them unless you specifically click on the tracks or remove the “Don’t play” designation. The feature is currently only viewable on the Spotify app, but its function will translate to both the web player and desktop app. It’s probably no coincidence that the feature has launched as the #MuteRKelly movement has picked up renewed steam following the Surviving R. Kelly documentary and subsequent fallout. While the R&B singer actually saw an increase in streams following Spotify’s Hate Content policy, he’s been dropped by his record label and seen a number of his collaborations pulled from streaming platforms. Now thanks to “Don’t play this artist,” you won’t have to hear him — or any other music you don’t like for any particular reason — if you don’t want to. Source

2018 was a colossal year for TV, and that reflected on all of us here at Consequence of Sound. As we launched the early phases of our growing television coverage, we were immediately struck by the colossal burden that attempting to cover broadcast and streaming television in this era puts on a viewer. FOMO doesn’t even begin to cover it; we live in a time of honest-to-Christ overwhelm when it comes to picking shows. It doesn’t help that so, so much of what’s on TV right now is absolutely fantastic. No matter your genre or stylistic preferences, there are probably several shows you’re obsessed with right now, and as you’ll soon read, there are a new deluge of debuting shows set to occupy even more of your time. Some of the biggest showrunners and filmmakers working today have projects coming out through various streaming services. Venerated documentarians will bring their craft to the limited series format. The medium will continue to re-tell real life, using the past in order to understand the present in new and essential ways. Yet not everything will be so unfamiliar. We’ll get to return to Hawkins, and say hello to some of our favorite young adventurers. We’ll bid farewell to a number of beloved shows, including one of television’s absolute biggest. We’ll enter a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, and not for the first time either. Whatever you want to watch, rest assured that 2019 will have something you know you’ll love, and a mess of other shows just waiting to be discovered, sitting right at your fingertips. Good luck. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Film Editor __________________________________________________________ Broad City Broad City (Comedy Central) Release: January 24th via Comedy Central Why We’re Excited: All good things come to an end, and while Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson will forever be friends, we will have to wave goodbye to them. Yep, after five seasons, the incredible Comedy Central series is coming to an end. But, before we reach for the tissues, we’ll have 10 whole episodes to get through, which should be more than enough time to adjust to their departure. Not really, but we’ll deal. Maybe. On the plus side, the two have worked out a deal with Viacom to produce three new programs for the future: Mall Town USA, Platinum Status, and Young Professionals. Three phoenixes out of the ashes? Yas. ::sobs:: Queen.::sobs:: –Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix) Release: January 25th via Netflix Why We’re Excited: It’s been confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will be the show’s last, marking one of the first times that Netflix has allowed one of its series to conclude at a logical point, rather than a) far too soon or b) several seasons past its necessary lifespan. Instead, co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock will say goodbye to Ellie Kemper‘s scrappy, endearing, hopelessly behind-the-curve heroine with the show’s now-signature mix of pitch-black comedy and genuine, unironic optimism. Plus, we get to spend a few more episodes with Titus Andromedon. How can we say no? —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ One Day at a Time One Day at a Time (Netflix) Release: February 8th via Netflix Why We’re Excited: Raise your hand if you thought that one of Netflix’s buzziest series of recent years would be a laugh track-heavy sitcom about a family dealing with the tough lessons of everyday life. Now put ’em all down, you liars. What co-showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce have done with the ’80s sitcom in its reboot is nothing short of miraculous, doing what All in the Family (also a Norman Lear-affiliated project) did several decades ago and turning the traditional TV sitcom into a way to play out some of our most difficult dialogues, from gun ownership to mental illness to PTSD to the pressures of cultural assimilation for immigrants in America. We’re sure that the upcoming third frame will be no less hard-hitting, in its charming, TGIF-invoking kind of way. —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ The Umbrella Academy The Umbrella Academy (Netflix) Release: February 15th via Netflix Why We’re Excited: Fans of My Chemical Romance will get a nice Valentine from Gerard Way this year with The Umbrella Academy. Based on the singer’s Eisner award-winning comics and graphic novels, the complex series follows a group of children who were inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy, only for a handful of them to be adopted by a billionaire who raised them to save the world as part of the titular group. Got all that? It’s a little messy of a pitch — and that’s only half of it — but we’re intrigued nonetheless, especially based on the cast alone, which includes Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, and Mary J. Blige. Consider us enrolled. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Documentary Now Documentary Now! (IFC) Release: February 20th via IFC Why We’re Excited: It’s been over two years since the incredible second season of Bill Hader and Fred Armisen‘s mockumentary series. Of course, this isn’t any average show. Each season is essentially a collection of major productions, and the top-notch quality proves that time, effort, and dedication goes into each and every parody. Needless to say, the wait was worth it as the two have one hell of a season three waiting for us. In addition to tackling more recent docs like Wild Wild Country and Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present, the next run of mocks will get some A-list support from 2018 Comedian of the Year John Mulaney, Cate Blanchett, Michael Keaton, Owen Wilson, and Michael C. Hall. Can’t wait.–Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Shrill Shrill (Hulu) Release: March 15th via Hulu Why We’re Excited: Lindy West’s acerbic 2016 memoir was fast-tracked for TV production, and it’s easy enough to see why. West’s book balances a razor-sharp sense of humor with genuine insight about what it’s like to be an unrepentant, unashamed plus-sized woman getting on with her life in a world custom-built to remind her constantly of her own alleged failings. Aidy Bryant steps in as West’s proxy for the Hulu series, as a struggling journalist attempting to take care of everyone from herself, to her ailing parents, to an endless parade of unbearable boyfriends. Bryant is one of SNL‘s most engaging comic discoveries of recent years, and we’re hoping that Shrill gives her the breakout platform she deserves. —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Jane the Virgin Jane the Virgin (The CW) Release: March 27th via The CW Why We’re Excited: It would be unfair to suggest that The CW heads this year into some dark days. The network that dares to defy () has of late made a habit of also denying the idea that ratings matter when you’ve got a critical darling on your hands, championing shows like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (ending this spring) and the daffy delight that is DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (currently on a well-earned mid-season hiatus) even when the viewership numbers aren’t mindblowing. Exhibit A: Jane The Virgin, Jennie Snyder Urman’s tender, thoughtful telenovela, equal parts hilarious and heartrending, at times swooningly romantic and others refreshingly, even distressingly frank. The entire cast is superb, but when Jane has moved on, we’ll most miss Gina Rodriguez’s winning, series-anchoring performance, and can only comfort ourselves with her burgeoning movie career — that, and her status as the new Carmen Sandiego. Jane the Virgin has long been one of TV’s most reliable pleasures, and we’re much mistaken if it won’t remain that right on through to the end of this final season. —Allison Shoemaker __________________________________________________________ What We Do in the Shadows What We Do in the Shadows (FX) Release: March TBD via FX Why We’re Excited: Ever since Taika Waititi‘s 2014 original hit theaters, we’ve been waiting to sink our teeth into a sequel. For awhile, Waititi and co-writer Jemaine Clement had been teasing of a followup involving the werewolf gang, but we’re admittedly stoked that we get even more story with a series. Granted, the show won’t have the principal cast from the film, but the brain trust is behind the scenes, and if we’re being frank, Waititi has yet to really let us down this far into his career. Besides, what’s to worry about when you’ve got Matt Berry of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace involved. If there’s anyone who knows how to make spooky silly, it’s that guy. Seriously, seek out Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. –Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Fosse/Verdon Fosse/Verdon (FX) Release: April TBD via FX Why We’re Excited: Let’s divide this one into two sections, shall we? READ THIS CHUNK IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO BOB FOSSE AND GWEN VERDON ARE, DON’T GOOGLE, JUST READ THIS: Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell are doing a series for FX. They are two of the best actors alive, taking their talents to television’s most reliable hitmaking network (apologies to HBO, but it’s true). If you need information beyond this, I don’t know what to tell you. Just trust me. This will be worth your time. READ THIS CHUNK IF YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHO THE FUCK THEY ARE: I don’t need to sell you, but please, let’s try to keep the fact that this series centers on Fosse, one of the most notable choreographers and directors in the history of theater (and a great filmmaker to boot), and Gwen Verdon, one of Broadway’s greatest dancers, from those who might shy away if they knew that musicals were involved. Genius often comes with a cost, so expect a lot of darkness here—some of it probably communicated in dance, as the network has confirmed that some of Fosse’s visceral choreography will be used—but a lot of tenderness, too. Executive producers include Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, Thomas Kail and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Nicole Fosse, Rockwell, Williams, and Joel Fields (The Americans), among others. Into it. Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Killing Eve Killing Eve (BBC America) Release: April 7th via BBC America Why We’re Excited: In a year flush with great television, Killing Eve still set itself apart from the crowd as one of 2018’s best shows, to say nothing of its best debut. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (whose black comedy Fleabag will also return on Amazon Prime later this year) finds dramatic and comic tones unlike anybody else working on television right now. After all, she took one of the more generic crime procedural setups imaginable (a low-level MI-5 operative finds herself embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with a globe-trotting assassin) and turned it into a sandbox for Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, who turned that premise into a minefield of bloody, brilliant, psychosexual mind games. This can’t return soon enough. —Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Source

Eric Prydz is working on a mystery remix and the anticipation is killing us… “Long time since I did an official remix…” he shared in a rather vague update. That’s all fans needed to get excited. And all we needed to let our minds run wild with the possibilities. The last official remix Eric Prydz did in the dance realm, under his main moniker, was his version of “The Veldt” for deadmau5 in 2014. He also did a remix for CHVRCHES for their song “Tether” in 2015. Yeah, it’s definitely been a hot minute. Any guesses on which track he’s about to remix? We’ll be the first to let you know when it drops. Long time since I did an official remix… — Eric Prydz (@ericprydz) January 15, 2019 Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. Top doctors in Australia are calling for pill testing at music festivals and other events. Territory leaders have denied approval of such testing — despite multiple deaths, public outcry, and even by special request of the family of a deceased. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians says it’s like “government policies failing our communities.” The organization has joined together in sending an open letter to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and related officials. They urge the government to take pill testing seriously, because other methods aren’t working. The RACP represents over 17,000 physicians and paediatricians. Collectively, they agree there is enough evidence that pill testing could help prevent misuse of drugs. Their stance: knowledge is power. “The RACP’s experts in addiction medicine and public health medicine believe the evidence currently available justifies the introduction of carefully designed pill testing trials in Australia,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones weighs in. “Ideally, we would all like young people and the wider public not to use drugs illicitly. However, the reality is that they do in large numbers and the moral message to abstain from taking drugs is not getting through.” The NSW coroner is currently looking into the recent deaths of five music festival attendees. New: Skrillex, ZHU, Above & Beyond – Your EDM | Week In Music
News posted a topic in DJ Headquarters
2019 has been a little slow for new music releases, but it is only the beginning of the new year. But, last week still had some big remixes, collabs and edits from a few notable names. Check out the latest Your EDM Week in Music playlist on Spotify below: Release Spotlight Skrillex collaborated with Hikaru Utada for “Face My Fears,” the official theme from Kingdom Hearts III. Utada famously sang the “Simple and Clean” and “Passion” themes for the first two KH games, but this marks the first collab for the series’ music themes. Lil Wayne adds to the fray on the LSD track “Genius.” Wayne joins the original track with Diplo, Sia and Labrinth, adding his patented raps to the original track. ZHU collaborates with Sofi Tukker on “Mi Rumba,” a surprising but welcome pairing. Both artists are working on new music, so it’s exciting to hear them come together before releasing more solo material. Above & Beyond released their new single “Flying By Candlelight,” and we highlighted the club mix of the new track in our playlist. The track features the vocal talents of Marty Longstaff, their second collab since “Tightrope.” Ex-The M Machine (RIP) member Luttrell remixed Tycho‘s “Epoch” track for lovely results. The rising deep house producer gives a dancey shine to the originally atmospheric track. Photo by Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM.
