Over the past couple of weeks, promoter Danny Wimmer Presents has unveiled the lineups for their massive 2019 spring rock festivals, including Sonic Temple, Chicago Open Air, Welcome to Rockville, and Epicenter. And while all the lineups are stacked with impressive rosters of hard rock, metal and alternative acts, each festival has its own distinct flavor. Epicenter, which takes place May 10th-12th in Rockingham, North Carolina, is being billed as a European-style camping festival. The 2019 lineup features headliners Tool, Foo Fighters, Korn, Rob Zombie, The Prodigy, Judas Priest, Bring Me the Horizon, and dozens of other acts, but the experience will extend well beyond the daily music lineups, thanks to the newly created Rockingham Festival Grounds. We spoke with Danny Wimmer himself to get the lowdown on the inaugural Epicenter fest, and he laid out what fans can expect from the three-day event. “Epicenter is really our first full-on immersive camping experience,” Wimmer tells us. “We have camping elements at a lot of the festivals, but not where we expect 80 percent of the audience to camp, like we do at Epicenter.” One of highlights of Epicenter is that each day will not end when the headlining band plays its final note of the night. “We’re not having a curfew, so we’re able to do things differently at night,” explains Wimmer. “We can create super jams late at night, we can basically go all night and we can invest in nighttime activities.” The camping aspect will allow concertgoers to take a breather from the nonstop music, if they so desire. “The camping is attached to the festival, so fans will be able to go in and out,” says Wimmer. “You can come into the grounds, hang out and see your favorite bands, and then go back to the campground. It’s just a different experience from some of our other festivals.” As for the space itself, Wimmer divulges that it will evolve in the years to come. “The great thing about this property is that over time we’re going to be able to build infrastructure. We worked out a longterm deal with all the property owners. We’re going to be able to invest and put permanent fixtures in there.” In addition to all-star jams, Wimmer is planning to stage comedy sets and other entertainment for the late-night Epicenter crowd. He concludes, “When the main festival shuts down for the night, what we’re calling the Rockingham Village will just be starting up, and the party will go as long as the people want to party.” Tickets for Epicenter are on sale now at EpicenterFestival.com.   2. Before “Things I’ve Learned” by BRKLYN was released, Your EDM was offered the premiere. I really wanted to take it, but unfortunately didn’t have the time when it was needed. Thankfully, life is full of second chances, and Your EDM is now proud to premiere the full Things I’ve Learned EP, out today via Enhanced. I’ll get back to the title track in a moment, but that’s not where the EP begins. It begins with “Good Vibe” featuring Zack Martino, and it does a brilliant job of starting the EP off on the right food. The whole project has a wildly upbeat tone and “Good Vibe” kicks this off with effusive vocals and a high-tempo beat paired with bright and positive synths. The piano notes in the bridge coupled with the muted drum pads ground it in a sort of natural light while the more exuberant electronic elements take it to the next level. From there, we actually do get to the title track, “Things I’ve Learned,” with Fairlane featuring Jocelyn Alice. To me, this is the highlight of the EP – though, that’s not particularly saying much, as each of the tracks is brilliant in their own right. “Things I’ve Learned” excels and stands above the rest of the tracks, however, in its incorporation of the guitar elements. It also builds upon itself in such a natural and pleasing way; I have a habit of thinking ahead in music, and when those expectations are thwarted, it often leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. It’s a personal problem, but a problem nonetheless. I don’t have to worry about any of that with “Things I’ve Learned,” as it does everything exactly as I envisioned, and that’s an amazing trait. “Gotta Have It” stands out on the EP as the only track without a feature. Perhaps that could be interpreted as the purest form of BRKLYN, but in another sense, they’re also taking a risk putting it out with a group of songs augmented by talented vocalists. Fortunately, “Gotta Have It” still shines bright with the same high-tempo energy as “Good Vibe” and the great guitar licks of “Things I’ve Learned.” The EP finishes with two more collaborations, “Weakness” with Medii and Sky, and “Brightside” with Disco Fries and Lena Leon. Of all the tracks on the EP, “Weakness” is by far the most future bass of the group. The large, sweeping synths and beautiful female vocals are cornerstones of the genre, and it sounds as great as ever here. “Brightside” concludes the EP with perhaps the most subdued of the tracks on Things I’ve Learned. With so much energy in the previous tracks, this was probably a smart move. Lena Leon’s vocals serve as almost a figurative fade out in the grander scope of the EP. “You guys have no idea how good it feels to have this finally come out,” says BRKLYN’s Cameron Alexander. “This whole EP process did not come together how I originally expected at all; these songs all come from different times and different places. It wasn’t one specific vision that was executed in 3 months. Some songs we revisited from a few years ago that we loved, some were brand new written over the WiFi or written together in our mountain compound where we do a lot of our creating.” BRKLYN’s Cody Nadeau continues, “It really feels good to show people a full fledged body of work. A single is always fun but a collection of works is something I’m truly proud of.   3. It seems like every two years since releasing his Hesitant Alien solo debut in 2014, Gerard Way pops back up with some new music. This year has seen him drop a track a month since October, starting with “Baby You’re a Haunted House” and followed by November’s “Getting Down the Germs”. It’s only fitting that his December offering, “Dasher”, comes with a Christmas lean. “‘Dasher’ is about a girl who falls in love with a reindeer,” the former My Chemical Romance singer said in a press release. “The reindeer thinks she’s pretty great too. They have adventures, they talk about life. The song is also about the magic sometimes hidden in the mundane.” The Regrettes frontwoman Lydia Night features on the track, and you can listen via the lyric video below. In related news, Netflix’s adaptation of Way’s The Umbrella Academy comic series just got its first trailer. The story follows “A dysfunctional family of superheroes [coming] together to solve the mystery of their father’s death, the threat of the apocalypse and more.” The show debuts February 15th, and you can watch the trailer below.   4. Kurt Vile brought a heavy dose of guitars to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night. In support of his recently released album, Bottle It In, the Philadelphia indie rocker knocked out its lead single, “Loading Zones”. “How beautiful to take a bite out of the world,” Vile sang on the meandering track, later adding. “I park for free! That’s the way I live my life.” That same bit of swagger also manifested itself in Vile’s crunchy, keen guitar outro. Catch the replay below.   5. Not too many metal frontmen sit down for a chat with the magazine Psychology Today, but that’s exactly what Ghost’s Tobias Forge did. Furthermore, the Swedish musician discussed the roots of his interest in satanism in the interview. The Ghost mastermind, who performs as Cardinal Copia when fronting the band, reveals that the appeal of Satan formed out of a combination of his rejection of Christianity, and the music he listened to as a young boy. “My brother gave me my first records when I was about 3 or 4 years old, because he bought a lot of records,” revealed Forge. “And he was very nice because he gave me the records he thought I’d like more. My first records were KISS’ Love Gun, Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry, and Mötley Crüe’s Shout at the Devil. That had immense influence on me.” He also talked about how his first teacher and his stepmother both soured him on Christianity. “My first teacher … was extremely strict, mean and deeply religious … And she definitely became the symbol for Christianity and not being very nice,” adding, “[My stepmother] was also a symbol of the not-so-nice Christian society. In one way they were proclaiming to be advocates for being nice, and kindness and understanding, whereas I saw nothing of that. And that started an interest in looking for the dark side.” Forge continued, “As a young teen, Satan, and the idea of some sort of world that you could be in touch with that could empower you was very much the symbol for freedom. [And by then] I had already been introduced to [Satan] by Mötley Crüe and Gene Simmons and Darth Vader.” Ghost will wrap up their fall North American tour with an arena show at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, tomorrow night (December 15th).   6. British rapper J Hus will spend the next eight months in jail after admitting to carrying a knife in a public place, according to BBC News. J Hus, 23, was arrested back in June after being found in possession of a knife during a traffic stop in East London. Judge Sandy Canavan told J Hus that he was a “role model to many” who “failed” to leave his past behind him, BBC notes. Judge Canavan also pointed to J Hus’ previous arrests for knife possession as justification for his lengthy sentence: “This, in such a young life, is the fourth occasion when you have gone out armed with a knife.” An attorney for J Hus said the rapper suffers from mild PTSD stemming from a 2015 stabbing attack, which left him in the hospital. J Hus told the court that he was “ill advised” and “utterly stupid” to carry the knife, adding, “I was not in the right state of mind.” J Hus released his debut album, Common Sense, in 2017.   7. Back in November, I waited outside New York’s Irving Plaza in a long line of teenagers that snaked around the block. All of us were there that night to attend a sold-out concert for Billie Eilish, and for many of those teenagers, the evening served as their very first concert experience. Most were fidgety, shuffling side to side in their place, anxious to get through security and secure a spot in front of the stage. Others listened to Eilish playlists on their phones, sharing their headphones with a friend and singing out loud to warm up their vocal cords. A few even got their parents to learn the words. Waiting amongst them, I tried to find the words to describe the energy that surrounded me. I think I might’ve posted an Instagram story with the emoji of those two wide eyes. That barely conveyed what was happening. I texted friends words like wild, incredible, overwhelming, but those also didn’t quite capture this movement, this entity that is Eilish’s fanbase. It weirdly felt like déjà vu, and later it dawned on me: While I couldn’t fully articulate it, I had felt this before — many, many years ago when I was 16 and attending my first concert here at Irving Plaza. There was something poetic about that realization, as if we were all connected in some cyclical way, and we were. When Eilish took the stage later that evening, the response was massive. The crowd swayed, screamed, and sang in time with the 16-year-old, like a wave under the pull of its divine moon — and Eilish’s glow grew brighter with every song. That intangible, kinetic, and blood-warm energy is exactly what drives Eilish. She is as powered by her supporters — a word she prefers to use over “fans” — as they are by her. It’s been this way from the very beginning. Born to a Los Angeles family of musicians and actors, Eilish released her very first single, “Ocean Eyes”, in 2016. Countless singles followed — from “Bellyache” to “&Burn” with Long Beach rapper Vince Staples — leading to her debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me. Along the way, she earned the praise of critics and steadily gained a very loyal following of teens who felt empowered by her music. Sure, it’s fun to see rich 17-year-olds on MTV and in Hollywood, but it’s probably way cooler to see someone just like you, who could be your best friend or biology classmate, up on stage. Billie Eilish, photo by Ben Kaye “We’re just growing up at the same time,” Eilish says. “We’re the same.” Speaking on the phone with her earlier this month, she curses with enthusiasm and never shies away from cluing me in on the un-glamorous parts of fame and touring the world. Eilish is very self-aware when it comes to her answers, often taking long pauses to find the right words. But when she does, she talks with a nonstop flow, clauses running into one another, like she’s swept up in the moment, in that raw feeling again, probably because that moment has never stopped for her. While the first two years of her young career have been monumental, 2018 saw Eilish take her biggest leaps forward. She sold out tours around the globe — from LA to Tokyo, Singapore to Toronto — performed at Lollapalooza and on Ellen, and drew in nearly 10 million followers on social media. Eilish also released “lovely” with Khalid, perhaps her most popular single to date and one of our favorite songs of the year. If 2019 continues to move at even half this year’s pace, a domination of the pop music landscape is a very real possibility. The pressure on her to deliver is unsurprisingly high, but she continues to stay grounded. She is proudly not your average teenage pop artist in that she’s realer than real, without taking herself too seriously. Some might see it as a bit clumsy, but there’s something so refreshing about an artist — especially one this young and at this level of popularity — who lets the energy, the intangibles guide her. Hopefully, some of that shines through in her following conversation with Consequence of Sound. How is the new album coming along? Is it almost done? I feel like really in the past week we’ve made the most progress. [We are] very, very, very close, and that’s still such a satisfying thought. We spent so long trying to make this work, but we’re almost there, and it feels like this big, huge accomplishment that’s about to happen. The fact that you just finished wrapping up your tour, and instead of taking a break, you’re home and still working. That’s admirable, and I can’t say I was that disciplined back in high school. [Laughs] You kind of have to pick what you spend your time on. I’ve been on tour for like a year now basically … it’s weird because touring and working and shit is really exhausting, and some of it is miserable. But then you get home, and you’re like, “Now what?” It’s a weird kind of addiction. Touring is … you’re there, and it’s hard and it’s great and it’s horrible and it’s awesome, and then you come off, and you’re like, “Well, I’m bored now. Let’s do some crazy shit!” I recently watched that video interview series you did with Vanity Fair, which was filmed 12 months apart. In it, you mentioned how much you enjoyed playing in Tokyo. What is it about the city that you love so much? Any other places stand out to you? There’s nobody that I know that doesn’t like Tokyo. It’s almost like … I don’t know what the word would be, but it definitely doesn’t feel like it’s part of Earth. When you’re in the core of Tokyo, you think, “This is not real.” It doesn’t feel real. It’s just so dope, and the fashion there is really insane. The colors and the designs, and I like anime a lot. There’s nothing like Tokyo. There’s nothing like Japan. I’ve been fucking everywhereeeee, bro. But honestly, you don’t get to see much — the walk from the bus to the venue, which is like five feet. [Laughs] I really liked Singapore, Atlanta, Toronto… Well, I’m from New York, so you’re gonna say New York at some point, right? [Laughs] Hell no. [Laughs] I’m in New York way more than I want to be. Speaking of New York, I attended your concert at Irving Plaza the other month. It was incredible. I mean, seeing you was obviously incredible, but seeing your fan base was truly something else — wild, even. Funny, short anecdote: When I was 16, I saw my very first concert at Irving Plaza. At your show, I overheard some of your fans, who were there with their parents, say that your concert was their first. Your first concert is always such a special experience, and I imagine even more so for your fans, as they get to see someone their own age take the stage in front of them. It [her connection with her fan base] is so raw. I feel really grateful. I literally don’t have words to describe it. We’re just growing up at the same time — we’re the same. So many celebrities are in their 20s and 30s, and their fans are young girls, like Justin Bieber for example. It’s crazy to me that I am a young girl, and there are young girls my age, if not older, at my shows, listening to me … it’s just beautiful and I love it. I bet you get a lot of fan mail and messages on social media. I get many, many letters at shows. Or maybe they’ll bring a bag of Takis or bring a stuffed animal. They’re super creative and bring things they know I like that nobody else knows I like. Like certain things that I enjoy. They’ll draw me pictures! It’s just so beautifuuul, bro … it’s so cute. In the beginning, the notes that I would be given I saved all of them from the first couple of shows. And I read all the letters, which is like hundreds and hundreds — this was from my first tour about a year ago. I read all the letters, and I put them all up on my wall. I was like, “This is great, I’ll do this forever!” [Laughs] You may need a couple of more bedrooms, then. I would need like five more houses. [Laughs] I read them when I can. It’s less about reading the letters; it’s more about them giving me the letters and me having the letters. ‘Cause I don’t need to necessarily know exactly what you’re saying. I just need to feel the energy. I care less about words than the feelings of things. If I feel you, if i’m holding a letter of everything just going on in your life, I just want to hold it to my chest. I don’t care about reading through it over and over. It’s more about the energy and the love. And I feel like they [the fans] know that. But I still do read as many as I can. And I keep all of them. As you were just on tour for a good chunk of the year, I’m guessing maybe your experience being on the road and traveling somehow made its way into your new music. Or, what would you say are some of the topics you explore on the new album? I … don’t fucking know. [Laughs.] I don’t fucking know. It is what it is. I write in characters a lot, so it’s not necessarily anything that I’m going through at all. It’s just art … like you don’t have to be going through it to write about it, you know? You don’t have to be feeling it at all. A lot of songs on the new album are fictional and from a perspective that’s not you, which is what I like to write the most about. I don’t necessarily want to write about my life — there’s only so much going on in my brain! So it’s just coming up with new characters and new everything. It’s kind of fun … even taking stuff from your life and putting it in a different way. Telling stories from different perspectives takes a good bit of emotional maturity and the ability to be a pretty sympathetic and empathetic person. Yeah, 100%. That’s kind of why I started doing it. I don’t know if you’ve ever felt this way, but have you ever done so much damage in a relationship that even coming back to say sorry would be too far? Just leaving for good and not saying anything is the best thing for everyone in the situation? This was like two years ago maybe … and that’s how it was and how I felt. And I knew I couldn’t do anything about it, and I knew I did something wrong and that I couldn’t fix it. So, I got on my bed, and I got out my ukulele, and I wrote a song to me from the [viewpoint of the] person that I hurt. It was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Because people don’t really want to see how they’re perceived in other people’s heads. Especially if you hurt somebody, you don’t want to know how they feel about it. But you should, and you should force yourself to be like, “Ok how are my actions affecting other people?” And just opening your mind up to it and just becoming them. It took a lot out of me to write this song, and it was kind of depressing to write it, but it helped a lot, and it helped me see things from a different point of view. Billie Eilish, photo by Ben Kaye In terms of being a storyteller and creating characters, where do you get your inspiration? Any specific movies, TV shows, or books — Books. HA! [Laughs] Yeah, I wasn’t too huge on reading when I was in high school aside from the required stuff. I’ve been so influenced by movies growing up and TV shows. Favorite movies are stuff like The Babadook, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Fruitvale Station. Favorite TV shows are Twin Peaks, Black Mirror, and American Horror Story. I’ve always loved horror movies. What I’m working on right now … is CRAAAZYY … and very inspired by horror. You will understand what I mean when it’s out. Oh, also Spirited Away! All of my drawing inspirations have come from that movie. Studio Ghibli and shit. You can get inspiration from anything if you let yourself. Personally, my favorite film genre is horror. Some friends don’t really get it and think I’m being too morbid. I have a hard time sort of explaining it to them, even though I know for myself, in an abstract way, why I love it. Why do you? It’s just like … I don’t know … That’s a hard question. I like being scared. I’m sort of a masochist, I like being hurt, I like being scared, I like being flipped out. It’s like a high for me for some reason. Some people just can’t stand being scare. They don’t want to see anything that’s gonna make them flip out. They don’t want to do anything that just freaks them out a little bit. But I — and especially recently and stuff I’m working on now — am completely the opposite, where the videos and the stuff we’re working on right now, all the things that have sort of flipped me out, I’ve started to get closer than I’ve ever gotten to anything before. I just love being scared. And if a horror movie is done right, the shots are dope and the story line is told well, like nothing beats it. The Babadook for instance is my favorite movie. All the shots are genius. I totally understand what you mean about the thrill of fear. This is what I tell my friends when I try to articulate my love of horror: Nothing feels the same way as being scared. If you watch a romantic comedy, you’ll be laughing or feeling happy. The fear is a different sensation. It almost makes you feel alive in a really weird way. YUP! EXACTLY! UGH. What is the best or most recent advice you’ve gotten from a fellow musician or celebrity? The more I’ve gotten further into whatever I’m doing right now — “my career or whatever the fuck you wanna call it” [Laughs] — nobody knows what they’re doing here. Like nobody. There’s no artist that has it figured out and knows what they’re doing. I think you get to a point where you know how to not know what you’re doing in a way that sort of shows everyone that you actually do, but you actually don’t. Nobody knows, and it’s the same way with parents, which I’ve noticed as I’ve grown up. My parents aren’t anything different from anyone else. I mean they are my parents, but they’re just as vulnerable as anyone else’s. They’re not invincible. Everybody is just dealing with things. And advice is an interesting thing. I don’t really believe anyone can give advice to anyone because you’re the only person that can give advice to yourself. You’re the only person that’s gonna do it the right way for you. This is something that I think about a lot. I just don’t really think anyone can give you the right advice that you could just not figure out yourself. I think we’re gonna rent out an ice skating rink and have me and my friends skate around ’cause it’s cute and ’cause I can’t necessarily go there in public. Then we’re gonna go have dinner at this place — since I was very young, it’s been tradition to go there. Nothing huge.   8. Following up their new wave-tinged album I’ll Be Your Girl earlier this year, indie rock stalwarts The Decemberists have returned with their latest EP, Traveling On. The Decemberists’ website describes Traveling On as “a sharp twenty-one minutes of songs that were recorded during the I’ll Be Your Girl sessions but never quite found a home on the album those sessions produced.” This is borne out in the new EP’s sound, which continues along songwriter Colin Meloy’s quirky path towards more new wave influences like New Order and Roxy Music.   9. Last week, Planned Parenthood announced the second volume in its 7-inches for Planned Parenthood benefit series. Today brings the first release from the fundraising effort, a track called “All I Want” from The National’s Matt Berninger, Julien Baker, and composer Stephan Altman. Baker and Berninger debuted “All I Want” live during a recent boygenius show. The studio version of the song has been joined with a B-side of Hanif Abdurraqib performing his poem “Defiance, Ohio is the Name of a Band”. In a statement, Berninger noted that “7-inches for Planned Parenthood is essentially an independently run record label devoted entirely to protecting sexual and reproductive rights. Thanks to the huge community of people who helped launch Volume 1, we are very excited to launch Volume 2.” Check out the 7-inch below. In 2014, NYC rapper, feminist and voracious anime fan Princess Nokia (né Destiny Frasqueri) released Metallic Butterfly, a searing independent debut filled with stellar vocals and ambitious production value. Today, the mixtape has received an expanded reissue courtesy of Rough Trade Records, and you can stream it on Apple Music and Spotify below. Metallic Butterfly (Remastered & Expanded) not only provides a lengthened version of the original tape, but it also brings the effort to streaming services for the first time. Now, you can bang your head to pumped-up love songs like “Dragons”, “Corazon En Afrika”, and “Young Girls” over your phone, as well as bonus tracks like “Anomaly”, “Earth Is My Playground”, and “Versace Hottie”. Princess Nokia released her latest mixtape, A Girl Cried Red, this past summer, and she is currently part of the lineup for Primavera Sound 2019.   11. Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton has announced a collaborative album that will be released on March 1st under his own name. The disc, titled Anesthetic, features contributions from his Lamb of God bandmate Randy Blythe, Alter Bridge / Slash singer Myles Kennedy, and late Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington, among others. “This album wasn’t a concerted effort to start something outside Lamb of God,” Morton explained in a press release. “Music is always in my head, and until I write and record it, it’s stuck there. But once I record it, it’s out. It’s a catharsis, more for my own sanity.” The collaboration with Bennington happened only a few months before the Linkin Park singer took his own life in 2017. Earlier this fall, Morton confirmed that the track would eventually see the light of day. Among the other guest vocalists on the album are Papa Roach’s Jacoby Shaddix, Testament’s Chuck Billy, Buckcherry’s Josh Todd, and former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan. In terms of instrumentation, Morton plays all guitars, while other contributors include Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, Stone Sour drummer Roy Mayorga, Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez, Korn drummer Ray Luzier, and more. Along with the album announcement comes the first single, “Truth Is Dead”, featuring Blythe and Arch Enemy singer Alissa White-Gluz, which can be streamed below.   12. The Cure are showing no signs of slowing down — even as they celebrate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Not only has the band mapped out an extensive festival tour for 2019, they’re also just weeks away from finishing their first new album in over a decade. In an interview with SiriusXM, frontman Robert Smith said,“We’re going in about six weeks time to finish up what will be our first album in more than a decade. It’s very exciting times for us all around.” Smith said he was motivated to get into the studio following the 2018 Meltdown Festival, which he himself curated. “Seeing all these new bands inspired me to do something new,” he explained. As for their aforementioned 2019 tour, Smith previously said the band would be playing up to 20 festivals next summer. Thus far, they’ve confirmed appearances at a number of prominent European events, including Belgium’s Rock Werchter, Portugal’s NOS Alive, and Spain’s Mad Cool Festival.   14. Miles Morales finally is swinging on the big screen with Sony’s release of the superb Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Accompanying the young webslinger on his new animated adventure is a whole score of hip-hop’s finest, as you can hear by streaming the official soundtrack via Apple Music and Spotify below.   17. John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” has been covered countless times in the years since its 1971 release, but that didn’t stop (and won’t stop) Miley Cyrus from covering it. Tonight, in anticipation of her Saturday Night Live appearance this weekend, Cyrus released her star-studded cover, which not only features frequent collaborator Mark Ronson, but John and Yoko’s own son, Sean. “It’s just so magic every time we sing it … goosebumps all over the place,” Cyrus told Howard Stern on Wednesday. “This song … the way that it is so true to where we are right now and these lyrics of ‘what have we done?’ Are we doing enough, are we actually active? All we do is complain and we don’t actually get out there and do enough in our communities.   18. On Saturday, December 15th, Bruce Springsteen will wrap up his thrice-extended, Tony Award-winning Broadway residency. The same day, Netflix will debut a new concert film centered on the year-plus-long run. Ahead of the film’s release, the Springsteen on Broadway live album has today been released, and you can stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. Recording for both the album and the Netflix special took place during a pair of performances this past July 17th and 18th. Both feature the entire program from Springsteen’s performances, including all the spoken-word introductions to each song.   19. Today marks the release of the original soundtrack to Vox Lux, Brady Corbet’s complicated dig into modern pop stardom. Subscribers of Spotify and Apple Music can stream it below. At the forefront of the soundtrack is new material written by Sia, who, along with longtime collaborator Greg Kurstin, has written original songs “I Crumble” and “Wrapped Up”. Natalie Portman and Raffey Cassidy, playing the same pop star protagonist, sing the tracks in the film and on the OST.   20. Whether you like it or not, being a DJ these days can be a hard sell… the alternate is being a DJ and producer who can kick it in the club and studio! Cue Tori Levett, a musically inclined soul with a knack for both. Just after the release of her latest single ‘Crazy’ and ahead of her headliner set at the next Stoney Roads party on the 22nd with Motorik, Lucy Cliche and more (yeah we had to do it!) we caught up with Sydney-sider to talk where it all began, her work with Keep Sydney Open, a pretty hefty instagram following and of course some tips for those starting out in what can be a fairly daunting scene. SR: You’ve burst onto the music scene in a huge way, DJing and producing. What kickstarted it all and where do you see yourself heading? TL: I grew up loving music, I played instruments throughout school and would make songs and upload them to my Myspace page. It was all for fun because I didn’t think it were possible to ever make a career out of it. When I turned 18, I started club promoting and through that, I met heaps Djs, artists (some of them being my favourite artists) and other club promoters and I was super inspired that they were sharing something they loved or created and where making people happy and dance while doing so. I then thought why not just try DJing and I practiced for a very long time in my bed room before I played my first show. After I played my first couple of shows, I knew this is exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t stop until I made it happen. 
I hope to see myself joining all my favourite artists on festival lineups and touring around the word. I know that It’s not going to be easy and I am going to have to work really hard but I am definitely ready. I think I will always be learning through myself and others and I am excited to see where it takes me. SR; You recently dropped some wisdom for Keep Sydney Open. What drove you to get involved in that sort of political activism? TL: The lock out laws are something that directly effects everyone around me, artists, industry and music fans alike. I have supported KSO since day one and was stoked when they reached out to me to speak at their last event. Even as there is talk of relaxing lockouts and new government funding for live music, the situation continues to get worse. Take the closure of World Bar for example, where I played some of my first headline sets. Now those event staff and promotors are out of the job. It’s going to take a long time to repair. SR: What are your tips on Keeping Sydney ‘Open’? TL: Get out to club nights, support your friends DJ set, go watch a local band! Type Keep Sydney Open into Google and maybe write a litter to your local MP telling them lockouts suck. SR: You have a bit of an Instagram following, does that play into you as a DJ and Producer or do you keep them seperate? Are there any preconceptions people have about your music or sets before you play them and their response after? TL: I have always incorporated my music and DJing even when I had small following. It is something that I have grown with my music. I think like every artist I also like showing my other side and other things I get up to like surfing, travelling, don’t we all? At the end of the day it’s a tool to promote my music career, but there are two sides to every coin and there are a lot of preconceptions that come with a social media presence. I know I don’t fit the typical persona of a normal DJ and I struggle with this everyday. I often get the typical comments, ‘she’s only up there because she is a girl’ ’surely she can’t actually DJ’ and ’she doesn’t make her own music’ but then I get comments after from people being like, ‘Wow, that set was actually sick, you just proved to everyone that you are actually really good’ or ‘the music you play is super hard, I wouldn’t except that from someone like you’ etc. and it sucks because people still expect to see a cliche introverted guy making dance music. I spend most of my time when I’m not in front of the camera focused on my next show or my next release. It all makes me more determined to prove that I work hard, and I’m good at what I do. SR: How helpful is having a background in music for a DJ? Any tips for those looking to start out? TL: I think It is helpful but definitely not a must. I think Djing has also taught me a lot about music as well as the other way around. I didn’t Start properly producing and singing until after DJing for a couple of years. Definitely knowing the basics with a few instruments helped. My tips (which I have to remind myself everyday): – No one ever said it was going to be easy – You are going to fail a lot, but keep going – Don’t listen to people being negative about your career, just do you – Surround yourself with supportive people that are actually happy for you – Believe in yourself and don’t wait for other peoples approval So big tick for Tori Levett and one to watch! If you recall, the two got together for Record Store Day 2017 for the English post-punk band’s first new single in 15 years, “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming”, and now they’ve reunited again for a fun and lovin’ cover. More specifically, a cover of Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Summer in the City”. “It’s been great to record with Matt again and to play alongside his amazing voice,” Marr says. “The The is part of my life and we both always loved ‘Summer in the City.’ We’ve made it our own.” No kidding! Where are all the city sounds? Like the honks? Of course, anyone who grew up listening to FM radio will no doubt recognize the song, though many will also recall the track opening John McTiernan’s comeback sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance.   24. Just when you thought cooler heads might have finally prevailed, Kanye has accused Drake of threatening him. Earlier today, Kanye unleashed a fury of tweets aimed at his chief Canadian rival, seemingly spurred on by a clearance request from Drake. Over the course of his afternoon Twitter tirade, Kanye chastised Drake for what he perceived to be two-faced behavior. As Kanye told it, Drake declined his overtures to hash out their differences in person, but still found time to play nice with Kanye’s mother-in-law, Kris Jenner. He also took umbrage with Drake “sending him purple emojis when I’m dealing with mental shit.” Eventually, Drake caught wind of the tweets and dialed him up on the phone, prompting Kanye to proclaim, “Mission accomplished.” However, it seems the phone call didn’t go as well as Kanye had hoped. “Drake called trying to threatened me,” Kanye tweeted to kick off his latest barrage of social media. “So Drake if anything happens to me or anyone from my family you are the first suspect. So cut the tough talk. It just doesn’t sit right on my spirit. I got a family and kids. [Tekashi 6ix9ine] is locked up [XXXTentacion] is dead.” Kanye accused Drake of orchestrating an incident at Pusha-T’s concert in Toronto last month in which several fans rushed the stage. After being intercepted by security, one of Pusha-T’s assailants ended up in the hospital. “The kid he had run on stage at Pusha’s concert is in critical condition.” From there, Kanye ripped Drake for “running around like he Pac” and “trying to be a bully” while picking “targets you think are easy.” Kanye specifically pointed to “When [Kid] Cudi was in the hospital he sent shots” and “When I go through shit he fucks with me and I’m his idol.” Expanding on that last tweet, Kanye claimed he was responsible for Drake’s success, tweeting, “I’m the guy with the pink polo that made a way for him… I’m your oxygen,” adding, “There would never be a Drake without a Kanye West so never come out your mouth with a threat.” That said, Kanye maintained he was “not going to physically fight [Drake] like it’s MTV boxing.” Instead, “I’m up for talking.   25. ASAP Rocky continues his epic run of music videos behind Testing with “Tony Tone”. The latest clip comes only two weeks after he spun our heads with “Gunz N Butter”, and similarly finds the Harlem-born rapper on another epic quest. Directed by HidJi Films, the whirlwind video starts out at a children’s birthday party, before waltzing through myriad scenes, ranging from ATV rides through the city to brass-fueled choreography to cherry-glazed pole dancing. Gorgeous stuff. Watch below. The video aligns with the formal announcement for Yams Day 2019, the annual memorial concert for ASAP Mob founder and co-owner of ASAP Worldwide, ASAP Yams. Set for January 17th, the concert will feature ASAP Mob, Ski Mask the Slump God, and many more to be announced.
