  1. The last two years of Ultra have seen some pretty good lineups. Not the best, but great in relative terms of past Ultra lineups. 2016 was undoubtedly one of the best, featuring the return of Pendulum live, plus Rabbit In The Moon, The Prodigy (though they ended up cancelling), The Chainsmokers wild performance on the Worldwide stage, Zedd, Destroid, and more. Now heading into 2019, Ultra just dropped their Phase 1 lineup and once again, it has us saying, “Holy shit.” Many of the headliners are recognizable names from pretty much every year: Adam Beyer, Afrojack, Alesso, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Maceo Plex, and Tiësto. Making their return again to the main stage this year are Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix and Zedd. Making their main stage debut this year are Rezz, Zeds Dead, and NGHTMRE & Slander, all of whom more than deserve it. Some other huge headliners this year include deadmau5’s techno alias Testpilot; although, deadmau5 will also be playing his own set next year, featuring the worldwide debut of Cube 3.0. Support acts include Cash Cash, G Jones, Infected Mushroom, Kayzo, Party Favor, Whethan, and more still to be announced. By the looks of it, at least just looking at the lineup, this has the potential to be one of the best Ultra’s of the decade. See the full phase 1 lineup below. 2. The Lowdown: One Direction was never meant to last. Simon Cowell took five teenage boys who had been eliminated from The X Factor and reformed them into a pecuniary powerhouse. Together they steamrolled radio charts and sold out stadiums across the world. But all that commercial success hid the fact that none of these boys had wanted to be in a boy band in the first place. Now, the inevitable has happened. One Direction have returned to their solo careers. Zayn was the first to jump ship and the first to prove he could swim on his own. His 2016 debut solo album, Mind of Mine, was the top-selling record in most of the English-speaking world. The album avoided the brightest, poppiest impulses of One Direction, instead favoring slower, spacier R&B. His sophomore album, Icarus Falls, is more of the same, and I mean that literally; with 27 spacey R&B tracks, and a runtime just south of 90 minutes, Icarus Falls is a whole lot more of the same. The Good: Icarus Falls is supposedly a concept album, and the concept supposedly holding it together is the tale of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun and fell to his death. It’s an alluring idea for a pop album, though Zayn is less interested in flying than the fall. On “Back to Life”, he’s been doing too many drugs, and on “There You Are”, he’s in for a non-specific, less detailed kind of plunge. On both songs — which compete for the album’s most satisfying mega hook — he’s redeemed by the love of a good woman. Redemption through love (or sometimes just sex) is one of the recurring themes of Icarus Falls, even if it has nothing to do with Icarus. The first half of Icarus Falls has a conventional synth pop sound. Around the halfway point — somewhere in the vicinity of track 13, “Icarus Interlude” — the album’s bouncy brightness gives way to darker, funkier flavors. Against this backdrop, Zayn’s pretty falsetto becomes haunting and ethereal. “You Wish You Knew”, “Sour Diesel”, and “Rainberry” are standouts from Icarus Falls’ wilder frontiers. The Bad: Concept albums are hard to pull off, but time and again Zayn cripples his own concept. To start, there is almost nothing here to do with Icarus. There are thousands of mythological figures to choose from, many of whom fall and rise again. Zayn made an album about falling and rising again. Icarus just falls. The marathon running time doesn’t help. Across the nearly endless 27 tracks, Icarus Falls repeatedly interrupts its own narrative with dull, boring, and uninspired love songs that have nothing to do with the theme. Furthermore, Zayn favors the same kind of instrumentals over and over again. To listen to Icarus Falls is to feel deja vu. You may wonder if your computer is glitching or stuck on repeat, because surely you’ve heard these songs already. There’s no editing, no care to make sure the tracks flow together. This isn’t a concept album; it’s a data dump. The Verdict: Icarus Falls has a lot of songs and some of them are quite good. As a vehicle for blitzing the internet with Zayn singles, the album is totally effective. But the concept is only half-conceived, and the listening experience is repetitive and dull. When it comes to Icarus Falls, more is less. Essential Tracks: “Back to Life”, “There You Are”, and “Rainberry” Source
  3. AMC’s desperate to get some of its mojo back, with the one-time prestige TV leader having recently ordered movies based on their biggest properties, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad. That said, they’ve still got some original series in the hopper, the most interesting of which is NOS4A2, a series adaptation of Joe Hill’s 2013 riff on vampire myths. We previously learned that Fear the Walking Dead’s Jami O’Brien would guide the series to a 2019 release date, and now Entertainment Weekly is here with more details, as well as a first look at Zachary Quinto’s supernatural child predator Charles Manx. The biggest takeaway is that the series will premiere in the summer of 2019, which puts it up against another supernatural series in the third season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. O’Brien also adds that she’s hoping to “expand the universe created by Hill.” She said, “There’s no limit to the number of folks that we could meet that have interesting powers and interesting landscapes that they inhabit.” It’s unclear at this point just how close the series will hew to the novel, which leaps between a number of timelines. Protagonist Vic McQueen, for example, is explored as both a teenager and an adult, with the majority of the action unfolding when the character is in her 30s. It’s interesting, then, that Ashleigh Cummings, who is currently cast in the role, will be playing Vic as a teenager. “She’s a working-class kid who has such a creative mind that it actually gives her a kind of superpower,” O’Brien said. “Charlie Manx becomes aware of her and realizes that she may be bad news for him, so he has to figure out pretty quickly what to do about her.” It stands to reason, then, that the series’ initial batch of 10 episodes will only explore Vic’s childhood encounters with Manx. We’ll find out as the premiere date approaches, but, in the meantime, enjoy the above preview of Quinto’s Manx, which finds the decrepit mind-sucker standing outside his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith. O’Brien describes Manx and the car as “partners in crime.” Previously, Hill saw Horns turned into a 2014 film starring Daniel Radcliffe, while a pilot for Locke & Key was reportedly passed on by Hulu. He’s also apparently going to see a film adaptation of his novella, Throttle, which he co-wrote with his dad, Stephen King, come to the big screen. Subscribe to The Losers’ Club, Consequence of Sound’s very own Stephen King podcast, for more of our thoughts on AMC’s adaptation. Source
  4. It’s hard to argue that Excision isn’t one of the most engaged artists when he’s doing stuff like this. Each year, the bass king opens up a poll to fans to vote on lineups for his annual festivals. Lost Lands began in 2017 and Bass Canyon had its inaugural year in 2018, but for the first time, both festivals are out of their trial phase in 2019. And with expectations so high, why not let the fans help out a little? Scrolling through the artist poll is like looking at a roster of pretty much every major bass act – and some curveballs – that has ever been. Everyone from legends Chase & Status, Sub Focus and Emalkay to newcomers Lord Swan3x, 1788-L, and TenGraphs is included in the poll. With so many to choose from, and more imposingly, no limit on how many you can choose, this poll is a bass head’s wet dream. Check out the poll here and get voting! Headbangers, the annual artist poll is here! 6. Three’s a nice number. Trilogy is a nice word. And, for many franchises, that’s just enough movies to tell your story. As John Wick approaches the release of its third entry, you’d be forgiven for thinking it would be the last. That it ever even became a franchise is surprising, after all, and an in-development TV series, The Continental, would do well to carry on the torch with lower financial risks. But, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Chad Stahelski said he “could live here for the rest of my career.” That means he and star Keanu Reeves “have ideas for days,” he said. “I enjoy making these movies because there’s no limit. We create our own mythology, and we have a studio that both stays out of our way and supports us on the wacky decisions.” He added, “If people like it and want to watch more, I could think of way worse ways to spend your career. But, you know, we’re in the entertainment business. We’ll let the audience figure that out.” The buzz on the action franchise’s third entry is high due to a crack cast that will see Halle Berry, Anjelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon, and Jason Mantzoukas joining returning cast members Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick. Also, The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif are swinging by, should you be worried the fights won’t be up to snuff. Writer Derek Kolstad is again joining Stahelski for their third go-round, which is slated to arrive on May 17th, 2019. Source
  7. Maroon 5 reportedly had a hard time finding guests to join them for their Super Bowl Halftime performance, having reached out to everyone from André 3000 to Nicki Minaj to Bruno Mars. Some musicians, like Pink and Rihanna, passed on the opportunity in solidarity of Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL QB who was seemingly blackballed from the league for protesting police brutality. Now, though, Maroon 5 have finally found an act willing to join them at the Big Game. According to TMZ, Travis Scott has signed on as a guest performer. Scott, who earlier this month achieved the rare feat of simultaneously having the No. 1 album (Astroworld) and No. 1 song (“Sicko Mode”) in America, recently extended his supporting North American tour. Additionally, TMZ reports that the NFL remains in negotiations with both Cardi B and Big Boi about guest appearances. A cameo from Big Boi would be especially appropriate given that the Super Bowl is taking place in the OutKast rapper’s hometown of Atlanta. Super Bowl 53 is set for February 3rd, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Source
  8. Christmas came early for fans of Atoms For Peace as the supergroup staged a brief reunion at The Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Towards the end of Thom Yorke’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes solo concert, the Radiohead frontman brought out AFP members Flea and Joey Waronker to perform The Eraser cut “Atoms for Peace”. Fellow AFP member Nigel Godrich, who is touring with Yorke, and frequent Radiohead collaborator Tarik Barri also participated in the performance. Along with the obvious highlight of the reunion, both Yorke and Godrich could be seen showing off some GIF-worthy dance moves in front of the colorfully lit backdrop. Elsewhere in Yorke’s solo set, he unfurled additional Eraser selections “The Clock” and “Black Swan”, Atoms For Peace original “Amok”, and “Truth Ray” and “A Brain in a Bottle” off Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes. For his second encore, Yorke played his Suspiria soundtrack arrangement “Unmade”. Check out footage of the Atoms For Peace reunion below. Yorke’s “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes Tour” continues tonight with a second show at the Orpheum. He is expected to release a new solo album next year. Radiohead were recently named inductees of the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class. Source
  9. Who doesn’t love Idris Elba? He’s smart, he’s handsome, he’s talented, and he’s insightful. Whether he’s brooding in the corner of Baltimore or slumming it in a shitty movie like last year’s The Dark Tower, the English actor always proves to be a beacon of light, providing clarity in moments of chaos, and that’s a trademark of his that also translates off screen. Case in point, his response to the #MeToo movement. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Elba was pried for a quote that might lead to a good ol’ Collar Tug — you know, like every other actor in that situation — but instead he offered a Simply Put, as he cooly stated: “It’s only difficult if you’re a man with something to hide.” Since then, his comment has earned praise on Twitter from other celebrities and officials, among them being producer, screenwriter, and author Shonda Rhimes and even former senior advisor to President of the United States Barack Obama Valerie Jarrett. This isn’t the first time, however, that Elba has turned heads with his sagacity. Last year, while promoting Molly’s Game, he praised the #MeToo movement for its efforts, adding that film “coming out now is actually quite amazing, when we’re seeing women stand up and have a liberation movement of speaking up against some their atrocities that has happened.” Elba is currently filming Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which is due out on August 2nd. He’ll also appear in Tom Hooper’s blockbuster adaptation of the Broadway hit, Cats, which hits theaters a year from now on December 20th. Source
  10. Lykke Li returned completely reinvented in 2018. Her first album in four years, so sad so sexy, saw her tilting her Swedish electropop into trap territory, a captivating new direction that truly befit its title. The effort not only provided a companion for the heartbroken, but ended up being one of the best records of the year. Today, she remakes herself once again, releasing a stripped-down version of the album standout “bad woman” with a new in-studio video. (Read: Lykke Li on Relocating to Los Angeles and Her Favorite Films) Surrounded by candelabras and her backup singers, Li delivers an even more plaintive rendition of the song. The notes are slower and longer, turning the pleading of the original into more of a sorrowful dejection. Even some of the words have changed slightly, with phrases like “the crazy” becoming “my crazy” and “I’ll try to change” turning to “I tried to change,” signs of further ownership and acceptance of the remorse at the track’s core. In a message accompanying the video, Li said, “As we say goodbye to this year I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you who listened, came to my shows, opened your hearts to me as I laid my soul bare. And to prove my love further here it is even more stripped. Love hurts but it’s what we are made of. From one broken heart to another. Yours truly and always. X” Check out the in-studio version of “bad woman” below. Source
  11. It’s been over six years since Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (and Josh Brolin) ostensibly closed the doors on the Men In Black headquarters. Six years. Of course, six years is also more than enough time for Hollywood to say, “Okay, let’s do this again,” which is exactly what they’re doing with the forthcoming spinoff-reboot, Men In Black: International. Today, Sony dropped the film’s first trailer, offering a first look at the franchise’s latest alien adventure, which pivots from New York City to the true cultural mecca of the universe, aka London, England. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson star as Agents H and P, respectively, who are tasked to solve a murder mystery that sends them around the globe like a sci-fi Carmen Sandiego. Watch below. F. Gary Gray (Friday, Straight Outta Compton) directs from a screenplay by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Also up for the ride is Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall, Rebecca Ferguson, and Emma Thompson. Given the star power, it’s clear that Sony wants to get this franchise rolling again, and honestly, what better time than now? MIB: International opens in theaters on June 14th, 2019. Source
  12. If nothing else, we know this: Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. Songs sing it to us, ads sell it to us, and those credit card bills that arrive in January remind us all over again. So, with all the hubbub, it’s no wonder that Hollywood and television have a long tradition of joining in that holiday spirit. But that doesn’t mean it’s all Santa, snowmen, and chestnuts roasting on open fires. Sure, there’s plenty of traditional fare out there, some of which have become classics and must-sees each and every holiday season. But there are also plenty of alternative takes on this festive season and even films that, like the song goes, don’t even seem to know that it’s Christmas. So, here are our very favorite movies set around the Christmas holiday. And whether there are yuletide lessons to be learned, laughs to be had, or even murders to be covered up, all of the movies on this list remind us just how wonderful, or at least interesting, this time of the year really can be. Fidelio. –Matt Melis Editorial Director __________________________________________________________ 25. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas… Dr. Seuss’ despicable, green-furred, red-eyed, cardiovascularly challenged, Christmas-hating Grinch implements a diabolical plot to disguise himself as Santa and steal the holiday from his Christmas-adoring neighbors in Whoville. It’s the Most Wonderful Film… Not only does the Grinch learn that you can’t stop a good thing like Christmas, but we see him transform, like Ebeneezer Scrooge before him, into a goodhearted soul — a reminder that Christmas truly is a time for miracles. Now, pass the roast beast. Actually, what’s the vegan option? Greatest Gift to Cinema: –Matt Melis __________________________________________________________ 24. Toys (1992) ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas… Toys brings war to a landscape of joy and innocence: a toy factory, where Robin Williams has to stop his evil uncle from jump-starting drone warfare. Barry Levinson’s surreal fable is as eerie in its precognition as it is beautiful. It’s the Most Wonderful Film… Christmas, in all its idyllic FAO Schwartz glory, frames Toys and is key to ushering viewers into the film’s left-of-reality world. This visually stunning black comedy also houses a spectacular score/soundtrack, crowned by Wendy and Lisa’s goosebump-inducing holiday single “Closing of the Year”. Greatest Gift to Cinema: –Cap Blackard __________________________________________________________ 23. Scrooged (1988) ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas… Bill Murray finds his inner Ebenezer Scrooge in this incredibly ’80s black comedy that further embellishes the eccentricities of Richard Donner’s filmography. Guy has done every genre. It’s the Most Wonderful Film… It’s funny, it’s spooky, and it’s a little macabre, but Scrooged still holds up as a go-to Christmas classic, if only to watch Murray go toe to toe with a bedlam of ’80s ghosts — literally and metaphorically. Greatest Gift to Cinema: –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ 22. In Bruges (2008) ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas… After a hit goes about as horribly wrong as a hit possibly can, two contract killers (Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell) are instructed to lay low in the picturesque town of Bruges, Belgium, during the most wonderful time of the year. Soon, restlessness and the specter of Ralph Fiennes’ foulmouthed crime boss rear their heads to bring chaos to the idyllic town. It’s the Most Wonderful Film… Martin McDonagh’s directorial debut is one of astounding quality and the kind of skewed take on the aesthetics of Christmastime that some will find themselves craving after so many carols and so much tinsel. It’s a violent, profane, lonely movie, and somehow it’s also funny as hell without ever caving on any of those other traits. Greatest Gift to Cinema: –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ 21. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas… Sam the Snowman recalls the year that Christmas almost got cancelled due to a terrible snowstorm. Luckily, a certain red-nosed reindeer and his misfit friends saved the day and allowed Santa to ring in Christmas on schedule. Ho ho ho. It’s the Most Wonderful Film… It’s the pinnacle achievement of the Rankin/Bass claymation specials, featuring now-classic songs sung by the likes of Burl Ives, unforgettable characters from Hermey (an aspiring elf dentist) to Yukon Cornelius (a kind, oafish prospector), and the timeless message that our differences should be embraced and serve to bring us together, not cast us apart. Greatest Gift to Cinema: –Matt Melis __________________________________________________________ Source
  13. Canada’s legalization of marijuana earlier this year was great news in the fight for new legislation of cannabis worldwide. To jungle and drum and bass label M Ocean, this seems like a great time to release a remix EP of Dubzee’s instant classic, “Everybody Smoke” featuring Demolition Man and Trinity Chris. The original of “Everybody Smoke” is highly remixable because combines reggae/ragga rhythms with a steppy kick/snare beat. On this EP there are four remixes: a jungle remix and a dancehall version by Danny Styles, a halftime remix by Trimer and another DnB/ jungle hybrid by D-Region & Code. The D-Region & Code mix seemed especially premierable given the celebration this EP is marking due to D-Region’s being Canadian. This remix is probably the closest to the original in terms of structure but with a little techstep or neurofunk flare. some techy synths and phrase transitions are added to a beat that’s somehow even more steppy and snaresy than the original while the lyrics are cut up and turned into samples for the breaks. The duo doesn’t do anything to take away from Demolition Man and Trinity Chris’s vocals, however, leaving the verses in tact while the beat and synths wind around them. It’s an excellent combination piece, bringing in the best of jungle and several sub genres of DnB but not making it overwhelming. No matter which remix you pick, this commemorative EP is a fun and danceable way to celebrate the ongoing advancement of the marijuana cause. It’s just a matter of whether you’re feeling jungle, sick halftime, dancehall or D&B vibes. Everybody can smoke to “Everybody Smoke.” The “Everybody Smoke” remix EP drops tomorrow, December 21 on M Ocean Records. Click here to purchase on Bandcamp. 14. Stephen King doesn’t need money. This year alone, the best-selling author made over $27 million (via Forbes), so you have to imagine the coin he was pulling back in the late ’80s, when director Frank Darabont purchased the rights to adapt his 1982 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. That’s probably why the Master of Horror never felt the need to cash in his $5,000 royalty check. In a new profile by The Wall Street Journal that chronicles the ensuing success of Darabont’s Oscar-nominated adaptation, it was revealed that King not only never cashed the check, but also sent it back to Darabont. As the article states, “Years after Shawshank came out, the author got the check framed and mailed it back to the director with a note inscribed: ‘In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve.’” Although it went home empty-handed at the Oscars the following year, The Shawshank Redemption is now considered by many critics and fans to be one of the greatest films of all time. As The Wall Street Journal points out in their piece, the film has since become one of the highest valued assets in Warner Bros. $1.5 billion library and continues to be a dominating force on cable television. Darabont would go on to adapt two more King books. In 1999, he brought to life another prison parable with The Green Mile, and eight years later would deliver one of the more harrowing movies of the aughts with 2007’s The Mist. This past summer, The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist screened at our inaugural Stephen King Film Festival, which was hosted by The Losers’ Club: A Stephen King Podcast at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre. 16. Whether it’s John Williams, Michael Giacchino, or John Powell, the Star Wars universe always sounds great, and that tradition will certainly carry over into Jon Favreau’s forthcoming Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. Tonight, StarWars.com announced that composer and Golden Globe nominee Ludwig Göransson (Creed, Black Panther) has joined the galaxy far, far away to score the series. “Words fail to express how surreal and humbling it feels to be invited into the Star Wars universe,” says Göransson in a statement. “I am deeply grateful to Jon Favreau and Disney for this opportunity and to John Williams for raising the bar so high with his iconic, intrepid scores — they will never be matched. In these next months I hope to honor the tradition of Star Wars’ musical landscape while propelling The Mandalorian into new and unchartered territory. And I will try to remember that there is no try.” Last week, Lucasfilm confirmed the principal cast, which includes Pedro Pascal as the titular lead, Nick Nolte, Werner Herzog, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Gina Carano, and Omid Abtahi. While Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow are all confirmed to direct episodes. Here’s the synopsis: After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The series is currently in production and will drop in 2019. In the meantime, stay tuned to State of the Empire, our Lucasfilm podcast that covers news in Alderaan places. Next year will be a big one for the series as it also sees the release of Disney’s new Star Wars theme parks and Episode IX. Source
  17. Nothing irritates me more than people who think it’s perfectly okay for them to just take something that belongs to someone else just because they want it. It’s one of the biggest red flags that someone is a straight up shitty human being, and taking something from someone else – especially around Christmas time – should warrant you a slap in the face. YouTuber Mark Rober started getting pretty fucking sick of people swiping packages from his front door, so he came up with an ingenious and slightly frightening way of dealing with them. Mark developed a package that shoots a shit tonne of glitter and sprays foul odours once opened, making it the perfect item for a package thief to take home with them. “If you’ve ever been in a situation like this, you just sort of feel violated,” Rober explains in the video. “I took this to the police, and even with the video evidence, they said it was just not worth their time to look into… I just felt like something needs to be done to take a stand against dishonest punks like this.” Have a gander below, it’s incredible. 18. Two staples within Ibiza’s nightlife, Amnesia and Privilege have been temporarily suspended after making unlawful structural adjustments. These changes were reportedly made in order to boost capacity at both establishments. Inspections from back in September found the alterations in violation and now both clubs have been suspended by the San Antonio council. The clubs may reopen once the architectural modifications have been amended within the code. Numerous areas of Amnesia’s upper floor were reportedly expanded without permission. Privilege also allowed unregistered areas of the club to be used as dance floors, for up to 500 extra people. Both Amnesia and Privilege are expected to remain closed through the off-season and are expected to pay €650 and €54,999, respectively. Two undisclosed venues were also charged for closing later than is allowed during the summer season. Source: DJ Mag | Photo via Amnesia Ibiza This article was first published on Your EDM. 19. Burning Man has revealed its temple for 2019 — The Temple of Direction. The art installment by Geordie Van Der Bosch has been selected out of a pool of amazing submissions. It will serve as a place for reflection on the playa in Black Rock City come next year. According to The Burning Man Journal, The Temple of Direction was selected for its elegant simplicity. As with any art form, this construct has its own purpose and meaning, but is up for interpretation. The linear form reflects the passage of life with its beginning, middle, and end. Much of Burning Man takes place off the grid and off social media, but no doubt this work of art will provide the perfect backdrop for many memories that next year’s Burning Man is sure to bring. The gathering will take place over August 25 – September 2, 2019 and this will be part of the dusty skyline. This year, the Montreal-based label has truly outdone itself with new original tracks from HVDES x ATLAST, KJ Sawka x Hi I’m Ghost, Jaykode x Blanke, Jacknife, Ryan Browne, and more. It also includes a new VIP of “Demons” by Kai Wachi which is, quite simply put, ferocious. The compilation is short enough that pretty much every track is a so-called stand out, but there are still a few that require extra attention. We’ve already loaded heaps of praise on the Jaykode x Blanke collaboration, which, even after hearing all the tracks, is still our favorite on the release. HVDES and ATLAST created something really special with “Mind Control,” as well. The texture on the synths is just wonderful, and the melody that goes along with it reminds us of the heyday of electro house. And then there’s the KJ Sawka and Hi I’m Ghost collaboration, which combines Ghost’s quirky vocal style with the impeccable percussion of Sawka for a one-of-a-kind piece of music. JACKNIFE’s “Code Black” has been a staple of Kannibalen bosses’ Black Tiger Sex Machine’s sets for most of the year, and Ryan Browne’s “EPITAPH” melds his own percussion and guitar prowess with some super sexy horns for fantastic effect. 21. As we reach the end of 2018, we’re looking back at some of the biggest news stories of the year. We’d be remiss if, in doing so, we failed to mention Datsik and the accusations of sexual misconduct against him. Even now, nine months later, it’s hard to piece together how it all went down in the ensuing media whirlwind. To this day, no formal charges have been filed against Datsik, real name Troy Beetles. On March 14, the original accusations became public via Twitter by the user @_princesssjay. Sharing a series of screenshots, the internet quickly took matters into its own hands, becoming a court of public opinion. In the #MeToo era, accusations of this nature are taken more seriously than ever before – and with the power of social media behind empowered women and allies, the accused can often see their lives destroyed before they even know what’s happening. Most of the accusations revolved around the use of ketamine in the attempt to get women to sleep with him. One of the other most salient details of the accusations were the “TULSA” tour passes that were given to women, meant to be read as “A SLUT” backward. Later that same day, Datsik issued an apology – of sorts. “I am a vibe reader, I hang out with a ton of people after every show, and always keep a positive vibe. […] You should know that tour is a safe and fucking rad zone for us all. […] I don’t condone that kind of behavior and I care about every single person that I meet, on the real. I know this is a sensitive subject and I am also a sensitive dude, so please say what u must but honestly I want u to know that this shit means the world to me. […] I will make a bigger effort to make sure that nothing I do will be misinterpreted in the future.” It did not go well. The dance community, both fans and other producers, reacted with intense derision and vitriol to the news, and pleaded with Datsik to own up to the accusations and address them directly. Even Datsik’s long-time friend, Excision, didn’t have his back. “In light of the allegations against some of the other names in the industry, I want to be clear I do not support nor condone any of the behavior that has been mentioned in the stories going around today.” By the end of the first day, Space Jesus had pulled off of the Ninja Nation tour. The next day, Carbin and Riot Ten pulled off the tour, as well. Later that day, Datsik dropped all remaining tour dates. Also later that day, Datsik’s management, label, and booking agency all dropped him. Note, again, that at this point, no formal charges had been filed against Datsik. Two days after the initial news, Ephwurd, a duo previously comprised of Datsik and Bais Haus, announced that Bais Haus would continue the project without Datsik, although that project was also dropped from its management. Within a week, people had stopped talking about Datsik, but the damage was done. His career was in shambles, his friends had abandoned him, and all of his social media pages went quiet. A previous Datsik tour date was turned into a fundraiser for rape victims, with all of the proceeds going to the UI Rape Victim Advocacy Program. It wasn’t for another four months before Ephwurd spoke out again, putting out a new song in the process. “As for the accusations against Troy, that’s not the guy I know. Coming to the mutual agreement of removing him from the project was a heart-wrenching day for me, but it had to be done. I am respecting his decision to stay private and wish the best for him.” In October, private messages between Datsik and a couple fans were made public, suggesting that he had plans to make a comeback in one way or another. To a loyal fan he writes, “I really am grateful to have people like u to help me keep my head up in the dark times. It’s been tough over the last 6 months, but thru it all I’ve gotten sober and been working on a ton of new music. Thanks for ur continued support, it really means the world to me!” To another he talks of a potential comeback, “No plans yet, but I will!” There’s been no further word from Datsik since, and his social media accounts remain silent. 22. The Pitch: Previously told in documentary form as Marwencol in 2010, Welcome to Marwen is the fictional studio take on Mark Hogancamp’s fascinating true story. Beaten and left for dead by a gang of homophobes, Hogancamp (Steve Carell) was attacked because, while drunk, he demurred about enjoying and wearing women’s shoes. Hogancamp lost many of his prior memories, skills, and even some relationships. But he found a respite in toys. He created Marwencol, a 1/6 scale fictitious World War II square that backdrops for a world of characters inspired by people in his real life. His avatar is “Hogie”, a scarred, grizzled man’s man and pilot. There’s Caralala (Eiza González), a Spanish fighter based on a cook Mark works with. GI Julie (Janelle Monáe) is inspired by Mark’s physical trainer. Roberta (Merritt Wever) resembles Mark’s toy shop clerk. And there are plenty of other enemies, brave women, and sets in Marwencol. Marwen is all adult theatrics with PG-rated toys. Through highly detailed dolls and clever photography, not only does Hogancamp create pulp-like imagery of dames and derring-do against the Nazis, but Hogancamp himself finds this to be a healing outlet. A creative means to act out vengeance against the bastards who cracked his skull open. A romanticization of what and who matters most. But what’s the cost? What are the pitfalls of this healing process? Can life imitate art? Can Steve Carell pass as a glossy action doll? To that last point, at least: yep. New Zemeck-tion: “Marwencol was solely made up so I could kill those five guys.” – Mark Hogancamp, 2015. Equally earnest and out of its goddamned mind, Welcome to Marwen sure is … something. Marwen is full of sights and emotions that hit in strange, surprising, and difficult new ways. Robert Zemeckis treats Hogancamp’s story like a grenade, tossing in drama, comedy, surrealism, CG extravaganza, addiction fable, kink, fantasy, vintage pulp, and even a little courtroom drama. Welcome to Marwen. So much Marwen. Here’s a valiant effort about healing, expression, curiosity, and the power and peril of escapism. Where this year’s Ready Player One was a sneak-attack indictment of escapism, Welcome to Marwen is a wily exclamation of escapism’s best and boldest possibilities. Mad about your job? Amorous for your neighbor? You can’t solve those problems with ease in real life. But in the toyland of Marwen? No rules apply. All of Mark’s most detail-driven dreams come true. He smites his Nazi abusers, and is able to be suave and even seductive toward the women in his life. The most damaging portions of his psyche can be resolved one shootout, bisection, and time-machine scenario at a time. Carell is such a sensitive and chummy lead that it’s hard not to be patient with his struggle to rediscover himself. If all memory is lost, the dolls are a portal to his innermost loves and shames. The real Hogancamp felt an equally karmic and erotic fondness towards women, because to him, they never aggravated wars. His “women of Marwen”, based on neighbors and caregivers, are his love letter to his understanding of the fairer sex. (This is, to say the least, a huge problem zone of the film’s. Even if Mark adores these women so much that he wants to make art out of them, they’re his pliable items in a prop box to be controlled. It renews the old argument about intent versus depiction, and his cohorts have different feelings on the practice.) When Zemeckis and co-writer Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) club you over the head with their plasticized characters, the messaging is mostly agreeable. Hate crimes have no place in modern society. People should feel free to express themselves without persecution. Women rule, jerks drool. And they illustrate all of it with nifty CG setpieces. The opening plane crash, shown in digitized micro-photography, depicts Hogie crashing a plane and emerging unscathed. Boots burnt, and that’s it. How optimistic. Mark emboldens the women in his life as GI Janes, with full artillery and corny one-liners. He’s able to turn his attackers into SS soldiers, and get back at them in violent, legal ways. Art therapy. At times, however, Marwen can be thorny or simplistic, even as it’s delivered with such style. How about a green-haired doll named Deja Thoris (Diane Kruger) to represent Mark’s drug problem? Or a time machine (made irksomely to look like a DeLorean…) to explore notions of choice? And on Mark’s worldview of these women. It ranges, from empowering to creepy to actively unresolved. The heart is there, but the actions can be squirmy. Take his crush on his new neighbor Nicol (Leslie Mann). He makes up their courtship in dollhouse bars and battlefield snogs. The photos are gorgeous, and the romantic lighting is just studio lighting handsome. But when they’re presented to Nicol? We’ll just say it’s a dicey game that Mark plays. Equally self-aware and sincere, Zemeckis is like a Lego master trying all sorts of shapes and platforms to convey ideas. But some pieces still feel left on the floor. Toy Story: The one immutable bit of praise that Welcome to Marwen deserves is in the CGI department. Zemeckis, ever the master of digital sheen in the service of elevated storytelling, forms the amazing spaces in which Hogancamp’s imagination lives. While Hogancamp’s real-life photos are still, and fairly dry, Zemeckis opts for his renowned brand of whiz kid flair. Crucially, it works to embolden Mark’s dreams. We’re talking impaled and burned Nazis. Toy cars full of female soldiers seamlessly transitioning to Mark pulling the Jeep along the side of the road in one take. Still photographs of the dolls that glide out of Mark’s SLR as he smokes and reflects on his work. And of course, there’s a cast of recognizable actresses made to look like a gang of eminently likeable and expressive Barbies…with molotov cocktails. It’s great. Enhanced puppeteering? Live actors replaced? Fully digital rendering? Trick photography? It actually leaves you wondering, “how’d they do that?” The Verdict: Too unwieldy for the holiday crowd, and perhaps too high-concept for even Zemeckis fans, Marwen is too much, not enough, and yet still deeply watchable. It’s admirable for the wildly different approaches it takes. Only a stylist like Zemeckis could try something like this. Take a real man’s witty, real-life therapy-based photography and attempt to spin it into a mo-cap circus with every genre tool he can think of. But can any other film this year lay claim to a scene like Hogancamp having a panic attack in court, one that transforms into a bloody and bulleted shootout with life-size dolls and fluid action photography? Has any other film attempted to blend ‘80s French maid pornography with PTSD-riddled jump scares? And does any other film have Steve Carell blithely walk down the road in heels and a bomber jacket to assert his hard-fought sense of self? And some of it is downright ridiculous, and shaky narratively. But it’s brazen, too (read: memorable). Like it’s bonkers by all accounts and frankly quite jarring at times. But it’s a film that needs to be seen to be believed. It’s the stuff ‘cult’ was made for. And it tries so hard, occasionally wows, and Zemeckis and Carell at least have the gumption to get out there with the material. This film’s many discordant scenes are so well-crafted and so creative and so odd, that you can’t help but feel like Welcome to Marwen won the battle in some way, even if it eventually loses you in its chaotic structure. That will be Marwen’s real medal in time. Where’s It Playing?: Limited release on December 21st, with Thursday previews the night before. 23. Moe Shalizi, most famously known for managing Marshmello, is officially leaving Red Light to start a new management company — The Shalizi Group. With Marshmello being one of the highest paid DJs and Shalizi working with many other promising acts, now is the time to make the move. In an exclusive with Forbes, the music mogul talks his new company and what’s to come. Most notably, Shalizi will own 100% of his new venture. “The business has grown significantly, and I’m just at a place where I’ve just felt like I kind of outgrew the situation I was in,” Shalizi explains in the interview with Forbes. “It just seemed like this was the year to do it.” His big break undoubtedly came in the form of Marshmello. It was back in 2015 when Shalizi discovered the talented producer and they thought up the now iconic masked DJ persona. Having managed Mello in an independent sense, The Shalizi Group will build off that same mentality. “I want to make it a place where it’s friendly for other managers to come in and basically feel like they’re a part of everything. You don’t see that a lot.” Both Shalizi and Marshmello were also recently featured in Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Source: Forbes | Photo via Billboard This article was first published on Your EDM. 24. Doctor Music Festival is returning to Catalonia, Spain this summer for the first time in nearly two decades. The original event hosted the likes of Bowie, Dylan, Rage Against the Machine, Massive Attack, and Portishead during its four-year run in the mid-90’s. Now, it’s set to return: the aptly titled “Reincarnation Edition” of the festival goes down July 12th-14th. Its name isn’t the only thing that makes the festival completely random and completely great. The lineup poster features a cow… with earplugs — an homage to the number of cows who litter the festival grounds. And then there’s the lineup itself, which is equal parts bonkers and glorious. Alt-rock veterans like The Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Good The Bad & The Queen are set to appear alongside prog rock legends King Crimson, who will be playing three (!) sets, as well as a hologram of Frank Zappa (!!). Other notable acts include Underworld (also playing three sets), The Prodigy, Primal Scream, Greta Van Fleet, Jimmy Cliff, The Voidz, Parquet Courts, The Sisters of Mercy, Opeth, Parquet Courts, The Twilight Sad, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, and more. Check out the lineup poster below, and visit the website for more details. Source
  25. When we think of Christmas music, we think of Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Which is, undoubtedly, one of the most successful holiday songs of all time. According to a new report, the pop star has earned over $60 million collectively for her smash hit. Since its 1994 release, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has racked up millions each year for royalties and streaming. Mariah Carey remade “Silent Night,” “O Holy Night,” “Joy to the World” and more for her Christmas collection, but nothing stuck like the original tune she wrote and produced alongside Walter Afanasieff. Though the timeless carol is all about love rather than frivolous gifting, the song has made her a pretty penny along the way. It’s truly the gift that keeps on giving. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” also recently became the highest-charting holiday song on Billboard’s Hot 100 in 60 years, which resurged to the No. 6 spot.
