  1. Today marks the release of The C.I.A.’s self-titled debut album. The 10-track effort also marks the fifth (and final) release of 2018 from the band’s Ty Segall. Subscribers of Spotify and Apple Music can stream it below. A collaborative outfit with Ty; his wife, Denée Segall; and Emmett Kelly of Cairo Gang, The C.I.A. began life on an obscure cassette tape sold at some of Segall’s shows. Now, the songs initially included on the tape have been given their proper release, with the band even producing music videos for the tracks “Pleasure Seeker” and “Oblivion”. In a press release, the band is described as “an encapsulation… the omnipresent fear & anger” of today. “There is difficulty, frustration, strain and a large snake,” it adds, “you can feel the pressure of it breathing on the streets, in media, and in your lunch.” The C.I.A. 2. The-Dream has released his new trilogy album, Ménage à Trois: Sextape Vol. 1, 2 and 3. Take a listen below via Apple Music or Spotify. Sextape marks the The-Dream’s first full-length since 2013’s IV Play. Spread out across three discs, the effort collects a generous total of 38 songs and two interludes. Unsurprisingly, there are a bunch of sensually titled tracks, such as “Hardcore Pleasure”, “Pull Out”, “Bedroom”, “Runaway Sex”, and “Back To My Room”. The-Dream spoke about Sextape in a recent interview with Billboard: “This album is gonna bring the smoke that everybody wants, if you want it, you gonna get it for a whole 12 months. It’s gonna be a nice continuation of what I started 10 years ago. And that’s just because I felt like it. That’s how I started Lovehate. Because I felt like it, not because I had to or needed to. Having records on the charts every time, it was good. But Sextape is three volumes, 38 records which I’m calling the “38 Special” so anybody who wants it can come get it. And there are no features or fillers. I’m really happy about it and proud of it. But it’s like, people expect it to do well, then everyone’s like, ‘Well, of course!’ It’s like, I get the high bar to contend with, and everyone else gets the low bar. Then everybody will be real quiet and try not to mention it, but it’s all good.” Although it’s been a few years since the R&B/rap artist’s last big solo project, he’s been steadily racking up accolade after accolade working as a songwriter and producer for others. The-Dream received Grammy nominations for his contributions to JAY-Z’s “Holy Grail”, the entirety of Beyoncé’s self-titled album, and Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam”. 3. Atlanta rappers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi are doing a damn good job of cultivating their individual personas while still maintaining the group effort that is Rae Sremmurd. Their last record was a triple album that bookended a Rae Sremmurd full-length with a pair of solo LPs. Meanwhile, they’ve continued to tour as a pair while also lending their individual talents to artists like Ellie Goulding, Nicki Minaj, Young Thug, and The Weeknd. Now, the pair is simultaneously releasing a set of solo Christmas-themed singles. Take a listen to Swae Lee’s “Christmas At Swae’s” and Slim Jxmmi’s “Nothing For Christmas” below. “Christmas at Swae’s” Single Artwork: “ ” Single Artwork: Source
  4. 21 Savage has returned with his new album, I Am > I Was. Stream it in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. Spanning 15 tracks, the album features collaborations with Childish Gambino, J. Cole, Post Malone, ScHoolboy Q, Lil Baby & Gunna, and Offset. The new album follows his pair of 2017 records, the solo effort Issa Album and his collaborative LP with Metro Boomin and Migos’ Offset, Without Warning. However, it’s not as though 21 has been sitting idly by this year; over the last few months, the Atlanta rapper has linked up with a ton of artists like ASAP Rocky, Migos’ Quavo, and Young Thug. Most recently, 21 contributed to Meek Mill’s Championships and featured on “Don’t Come Out the House”, possibly the best track off Metro Boomin’s Not All Heroes Wear Capes. He also has a cameo on Gucci Mane’s Evil Genius, which arrived earlier this month. I Am > I Was Artwork: 01. a lot (feat. 5. Too many venues have already closed their doors in 2018, but here’s another one just in case you thought the year was over. Beta Nightclub in Denver, long hailed as one of the best venues in the country for bass music, has announced that Saturday, January 5, 2019 will be its final night. In the statement shared on social media just moments ago, no mention of a specific reason for closing was made. However, increasing competition from other clubs in the area, especially Temple Nightclub, couldn’t have made things any easier. Our mission statement was always simple. Club culture evolving. As we made the decision to draw Beta Nightclub to a close, we reflect back on this mantra and what it has become. We want to honor what we set out to do, honor our DJs for their devotion to their craft, honor our staff and promoters for their dedication, and most importantly, honor our fans who have shared their valuable time with us. It is with that reflection that we acknowledge the need to take this time to reset, recalibrate, and re-familiarize ourselves with our promise. Our reputation reflects our integrity and we want to remain true to what we stood for. Read the full statement from Beta below. This article was first published on Your EDM. 8. Off their Upcoming Project, ‘Wake Up’ Coming 2019 Santa Ana-based alternative rock band Bristol To Memory recently released their new music video for “Wrapped Up,” the first single off of their forthcoming 2019 album release titled Wake Up. The music video provides an up-close experience of the magic energy that Bristol To Memory brings to its live performances. The music video directed by renowned director Robert Mitchell Rivers presents the illusion of limitless space in an almost dream-like reality. Band’s lead Rory O’Connell on new single: “In life we find ourselves grounded by the ones we love. It’s a sense of natural gravity but when that sensation is lost we can feel as if we are floating endlessly in an abyss searching for common ground. This is where the video for ‘Wrapped Up’ takes you. It’s a journey through space and perception perusing solidarity in the ether.” “Wrapped Up” marks the band’s first official release since their 2016 single “Holograms.” “Wrapped Up” is a catchy rock tune about walking the fine line between love and obsession, and the difficulties of making a relationship work in the 21st century. Bristol To Memory will appeal to fans of Weezer, Green Day, Brand New, and The Foo Fighters with their familiar sound that feels like coming home to fans of the rock genre. Bristol To Memory recently headlined Emo Nite and was featured in the Los Angeles Times Sunday paper. The post Bristol to Memory “Wrapped Up” 2018 Today: Watch appeared first on Verge Campus. Source
  9. When it was announced that Maroon 5 would perform at the 2019 Super Bowl Halftime Show, the response from the public was… unenthusiastic, to say the least. Now, it’s been reported that Travis Scott will be joining Maroon 5 as a special guest during the performance, and his contemporaries aren’t having it. The news was originally reported by TMZ this morning, writing that Travis will join Maroon 5 during the halftime show in Atlanta on February 3. Other sources told TMZ that Maroon 5 is also looking at other artists, including Cardi B and Outkast’s Big Boi. (Remember when Maroon 5 released “She Will Be Loved”? Yeah…) However, at least with regards to Scott, his fellow hip hop artists are trying to talk him out of it. Variety reports that JAY-Z is “attempting to talk Scott out of performing.” Meek Mill more publicly voiced his disapproval. 11. Ableton is one of music’s biggest marvels, and most popular Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), letting producers create songs at a relatively low cost. Unfortunately, the cost of extra synths and sample packs can add up quickly. Thankfully, Ableton themselves have a gift for the holidays: a free vintage synth pack. All Ableton Live 10 users can download the free synth pack here. Ableton sound designer Huston Singletary created the pack, titled SINGULARITIES. The pack is designed to emulate the sounds from classic synthesizers like the Minimoog. The pack includes single-sample, synth instruments ready to be included in any production. The pack also includes MIDI clips and two drum kits, both of which also hearken back to the classic sounds of older analog gear. Whether you’re a seasoned producer on a budget or someone looking to try Ableton, this free pack seems perfect. Perhaps we’ll hear more of those classic sounds in future productions thanks to this pack. Thank you for the holiday spirit and gift, Ableton! This article was first published on Your EDM. 12. Peak TV is up to its eyeballs in complicated characters — most of them straight, white men — who lead lives of contradiction. Walter White, the mild-mannered chemistry teacher whose ego and selfishness drive him to become a murderous drug kingpin. Tony Soprano, the mob boss in therapy. Don Draper, who is also Dick Whitman, who lies and tells the truth with almost every breath. It’s a long list. But even in a landscape that includes hundreds of scripted television shows every year, it’s still depressingly rare that we get to see people who aren’t straight, white men play characters that don’t fit into one tidy box. But in this, the Year of our Lord 2018, we got Pray Tell. Pray Tell is a man who, as the saying goes, turns the party. To that, he’d probably grab the microphone and purr something along the lines of not turning the party, but being the party. Yet in the hands of creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals — and especially in the hands of a Tony-winning Broadway vet named Billy Porter — he’s much more than the party. He’s a person fighting every day to survive, to live life, to maybe even sometimes be happy. “That’s what Pose does,” Porter tells us by phone, the week after he received his first Golden Globe nomination. “It shows you the fabulousness, and then it goes into the human being … This is what I’ve dreamed of for 30 years.” Pose (FX) FX’s groundbreaking Pose pulls back the curtain — a fabulous curtain — on New York’s ballroom scene in the 1980s, a thriving community for queer and trans people, especially people of color, which found ways to celebrate and champion life even as the AIDS crisis continued unabated. The disease, as it’s often referred to in the show, was a daily fact of life, something to be ignored, fought, or endured. The party isn’t Pray Tell. The disease isn’t Pray Tell. He is neither showman nor tragic figure, and he is both. “He’s fearless,” Pose co-creator and writer Steven Canals said of Porter when we spoke with him in Los Angeles this summer. “He’s not afraid to take risks, to be messy and complicated. He’s willing to do the full spectrum of emotion. Ego can get in the way for all of us, not just for actors — what you sound like, what you look like — and without meaning to, you can stifle yourself. But he just goes for it.”. Porter’s is the year’s finest performance (and that’s really saying something). It’s as vivid and exuberant as the gowns Pray Tell designs for his chosen family. It bites with a sharpness that lingers, unshakable as the winter wind that careens off the ocean and tears across a city pier. It’s as soft as the ballad and triumphant as a note belted loud and long. In short, Pray Tell is a person, not a type, and Billy Porter is an artist, now a star. Consequence of Sound spoke with Porter on the heels of that Golden Globe nomination about what it’s like to step into this role, where we’re at as a country and a culture, Pray Tell’s musical and sartorial selections, and what that incredible name might say about the character who bears it. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity. Congratulations on your Golden Globe nomination! That must have been quite a morning. Yes! It was very frustrating. These things are a lot for your nerves. I’m the kind of person that doesn’t really pay attention to stuff like that, in terms of when it’s happening, but [when you’re a possible nominee], everybody around you does. I would love to be in a world where I don’t know when they’re being announced and I can just wake up to a surprise or not. But the night before, everybody was like, “8:05! 8:05 tomorrow!” I was in Atlanta working on a movie, so luckily I was working, but I did have my phone in my back pocket on silent vibrate, and I thought, “well, from 8:05 to 8:40, if my phone starts buzzing, it’s good news. And if it doesn’t start buzzing, I’m down here in Atlanta, making a movie with Tiffany Haddish, Salma Hayek, and Rose Byrne. So I’m okay anyway. And I was literally in the middle of a scene, and my phone started buzzing. And then it kept buzzing, and it kept buzzing, and it kept buzzing. And I was like, okay, so I got it. I got the nomination, or people are calling to say sorry that I didn’t get the nomination. And then they said cut, and one of the producers came out and said, “Before we go on, we have to just say, there’s a Golden Globe nominee in our midst.” It was amazing. It can’t be any better than that. Pose (FX) And then back to work! Exactly, back at work. Awards don’t pay the bills, bitches! What is the relationship between the Pray Tell that we see on stage in and in emcee mode, and the one that we see offstage? I’m glad you’re asking [about that]. From the minute I got into this business, I understood that me being a gay man, me being an out gay man, me having an explosive energy — flamboyant, as many people like to refer to it, very often used as a pejorative — I found myself in the middle of a pigeonhole that I had no knowledge of putting myself in. I was simply already in it. I could sing, I could stop the show, and I’m huge and flamboyant. So, that’s what you do. That’s the box you’re in. But when it comes time to tell your story as a human being? “We don’t want to hear that. Go shut the fuck up somewhere.” Right? So my journey in the last 30 years has been about holding onto the thing that I do, not being ashamed of that fabulousness that I have — because who doesn’t want to be fabulous? Who doesn’t want to stop shows? Who doesn’t want to be that person? — But simultaneously to demand the at-what-cost story behind it. At what cost do I show up every day to entertain you? What’s going on in my life when I’m showing up with this patina of joy and happiness? To show up and entertain for your benefit? What’s going on with me? That’s Pray Tell. That’s what Pose does. It shows you the fabulousness and then it goes into the human being. Couldn’t be better. This is what I’ve dreamed of for 30 years. We see that tension comes to life in the first half of “Love is the Message” [the sixth episode of Pose]. Watching Pray Tell go through the motions and still be incredibly entertaining and vivacious, while obviously struggling and obviously going through something was fascinating. What were those scenes like to play? Well, those things were just an extension of my life. I came out in 1985. I started coming to New York in 1987. I lost a lot of people, but we had to choose life anyway. What else was it going to be? We had to watch our friends literally die in the streets, with nobody around us caring enough to even take us into the hospital, to let us die with dignity. We were inside of a plague, and Reagan never mentioned the word. Never said the word. So this show, this space that I get to vibrate in, it feels very… [pause] Many of us have survivor’s guilt. Many of us who survived, we have survivor’s guilt, and we don’t know we have it. We have PTSD. We didn’t know we had it. I got so many calls from people, friends of mine from that era, who said, “When I watched the show, I realized that I had not mourned.” Because the pill came and everybody moved on. And we in America, we in this culture, love to forget about the bad things. “Oh, slavery, that’s over.” “Civil rights? Oh, there’s no racism anymore.” We like to gloss over that stuff, but those who don’t know their history are doomed to repeat it. And that’s why we’re in the middle of the shit that we’re in right now. Because people don’t know! And that wasn’t even that long ago. I talk to little baby gays, and they’re like, “Isn’t that a little over the top?” I was watching The Normal Heart, and men are running through the streets holding their dying boyfriends like the Pietá, and a twenty-year-old turned to me and said, “Isn’t that a little over the top? They don’t even know! We lived through a plague. A real plague. That’s what this show gets to remind people of, and therefore, creates a conversation so we can start healing. Pose (FX) This series exists in such a specific time and place, and in a perfect world, it would be a very moving historical document with absolutely no resonance with the present, but rights are being rolled back, people are losing their jobs, their lives— Right. And people think that words don’t matter. I’m going to get into this Kevin Hart thing for just a second. Because it’s not about you having a joke. That’s not what it’s about. I’ve seen people and I’ve heard people who are not homophobic who do gay jokes. And you can tell that they’re not homophobic. I think Monique, a long time ago, she did a joke about butt sex. It was a whole thing about butt sex and “the gays,” you know. And the punchline was something like, “Yeah, but don’t knock it till you try it!” And then we must stop the person who we know is using a joke, but she’s not a homophobic person. She’s not saying, “If I come home and my four-year-old son is playing with a baby doll house, I’m gonna break it over his head and tell him it’s gay.” That crosses a line. Because that allows your fans to think that [you can] hit somebody because you don’t like them. You don’t like their sexuality, “so I can bash you in the head.” We’re not doing that anymore. And that is what Pose challenges. That’s what we’re saying. Y’all don’t get to have that language no more without somebody on the other side challenging that. You had long enough to spew that darkness into the world without somebody on the other side shedding some light on it. We’re done with that. Pose (FX) Oh, man, you’re making me want to stand up and march into the streets this second, but I have to keep interviewing you. It’s march-into-the-streets time! We have an administration that thinks that it can, with a sentence, erase a whole group of people. And we’re not going to do anything about it? Transgender people don’t exist? Fuck that. I say to Kevin Hart, and I say to D.L. Hughley, I say to those people who think that they don’t need to apologize for shit and dig their heels in their toxic masculinity: But you want your rights! You want people to stop shooting your children in the back? But yet still, you turn around and oppress other people the same way you’re being oppressed. Fuck that. Fuck you. We’re done. Pose is so powerful partially because righteous in that way, there’s tragedy and there’s rage, but also because it’s made with such obvious love. It’s such a warm, safe place, you want to crawl inside it and just stay there with these people and the families that they create. That’s what it’s about, it’s about family. Both those elements of Pose are reflected in the cabaret scene. For me, it was beautiful. When the AIDS crisis was happening, those of us in show business, we felt so helpless. I’m not a doctor. I’m not a scientist, I’m not a lawmaker, not a policy person. So what do you do? How do you fix it? How do you change it? And the cabaret community and the Broadway community, in the midst of that, came up pulled themselves together. There was this organization called Hearts & Voices. It was simple. When you go to a cabaret or a piano bar, you’re dealing with people who are in the business but don’t have a job at the time, and they come, and they sing through the evening. That community pulled together Hearts & Voices. Every hospital had a weekly cabaret for an hour. All of the hospitals in New York had their own once-a-week thing. And these people would just sign up and show up, three or four singers, and you’d show up with your audition book, there’d be a piano player, and you’d just sing for the sick people for an hour. To bring them some joy, to bring them some life to remind them that they are loved. So when I saw that in the script, it was instinctive. Did the writers choose your songs, “For All We Know” and “Home,” or did you and Mj Rodriguez [who plays Blanca] have input? I chose “For All We Know,” but “Home” was in the script. Donny Hathaway is life. It had to be the Donny Hathaway version. “Home” speaks to the theme of family that we were just talking about, and that’s underlined in the moment when Pray Tell gets up to stand with his sister. That was very emotional. There was really very little acting, because you have the real shit that sitting right there. When [Blanca] looked in that girl in the eyes — they made her up to look like she’s dying. So she was dying, and the fear. So all you have to be here and be present in that moment. For me, it was one of those times where I felt the spirit of my friends all over me. I felt the spirit of the people that I lost saying, “Thank you. Thank you for telling our story. Keep on telling it. That’s the message I got, the spiritual message I felt when we were doing that scene, and I knew how powerful it was going to be when we were doing it. Pose (FX) If you’ll forgive the total tonal shift, one of the very first things we hear Pray Tell say is, “Cry more, pee less.” Do you agree with that advice? [Laughs.] Yeah. Especially with men, there’s this idea that vulnerability is a weakness. And that has gotten us into a lot of trouble. That’s why we have so many of these horrible things, because nobody’s interested in being vulnerable. Everybody wants to pop that chest out. When you can get to the root of your fear, sometimes that makes you cry, and that’s okay. Once you once you own it, you can move through it. I have a song called “Love the Pain Away,” and “you got to feel it to heal it” is inside of the hook. As a costume design nerd, I can’t help but ask you about Pray Tell’s clothing, both what he wears and what he makes for others. What incredible design. How do they affect your performance? Costumes are everything. In film, it’s really the last big moment. For me, my characters come to life when I’m in the clothes. And I always wear the clothes, the clothes do not wear me! I’m not afraid to wear anything. Lou Eyrich [Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning costume designer] and myself, you know, she had vision boards, I walked in, and Ryan Murphy said, “I want to create a space where Pray Tell / Billy is a fashion icon. I want people to be talking about his fashion, whether about the show or about he himself. He’s a fashion person, let’s make him a fashion icon on the show, so that can carry through to his real life.” And I’m so glad! Because I love clothes. I love it, I love it, I love it. It’s one of my favorite things. So [Lou and I] get to do [create it] together. I’m pretty fearless. I’ll wear anything, and that unleashes a designer. Their brain unleashes and unlocks in a way. They show up with shit, and you’re like, “Yes! That! Uh-huh!” Costume people love me because I’ll wear anything. Anything that’s fabulous. One last question: What does the name Pray Tell say about this person, about who he is and how he operates in the world? Wow. [pause] Well. It’s very specific. It’s very memorable. If a person who has something to say, and has no problem saying it. That’s all I got. Source
  13. Hip-hop Duo Command Attention with Powerful New Single Hip-hop duo The Seige barrels onto the scene with the animalistic party anthem, “Back Up.” Leaving no room for wallflowers, The Seige demands attention from listeners with this high energy track. “Back Up” is available for digital download and streaming. James “Taz” Conley (lyricist) and Riley “Goon” Taylor (producer) are the rambunctious masterminds behind the captivating flow and sensual beats reminiscent of legends such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Rage Against The Machine. “Back Up” is a song that was crafted out of the energy felt when someone is just a little too close and or getting too aggressive in your personal space. “We paired that energy with some futuristic sound designed to complement the animalistic natures of the vocals,” says Taz. The primal drumbeats married with the vocal promise of pushing the limits, encourages listeners to push their limits as well. The duo complements each other’s talent without overpowering one another, creating an easy flow of symbiotic genius. “We are very accepting of each other’s creativity so when one of us has an idea, the other can easily see the vision and we’ll explore that world together.” “Back Up” is the first single off their highly anticipated double EP Duality, and serves as the perfect introduction for new listeners. The Seige began their musical partnership as organically as one can: mutual friends. A few years following their move to California, the pair of friends brought up the idea of creating music together. Conley and Taylor were hesitant to bring up the topic of working together, both wanting to respect the others creativity. Eventually, the musical connection was made; “it ended up being so dope, we just decided to keep working and become a duo. It was a no brainer,” explains Taylor. Their impressive resume includes having their music featured in movie trailers such as12 Strong, Mission Impossible 6 as well as working with the NBA, NFL and Premier Soccer League. From performing at SxSW in Austin, Texas as well as the iconic Whisky A Go-Go in Los Angeles, The Seige has garnered a large fan base on social media where their videos have over 6 million views on Youtube and over 460k monthly listeners on Spotify. The Seige describes their upcoming double EP Duality as, “future meets past, biological meets technological.” “Back Up” is available for download and streaming on all digital music platforms worldwide. For its first ever year, they’ve decided to keep it local and tap Miami-native Nitti Gritti for their first-ever anthem. Nitti Gritti has made an indisputable impact throughout 2018 with a multitude of widely supported releases, as well as returning to EDC Orlando for a massive hometown (homestate?) show, and is looking to keep his momentum going with another impressive production with his “Forbidden Kingdom Anthem.” At under two minutes, it’s really just a sampler of what Nitti can do, but it gets the point across just fine. Heavy, atonal bass with suspenseful wolf howls and ominous synths paints a pretty clear picture and theme for Forbidden Kingdom. Check it out below! This article was first published on Your EDM. 15. Just in time for its 10th anniversary, Parks and Recreation is heading to Comedy Central. The TV network will begin airing reruns of the hit series next month, kicking off with an all-day marathon on January 21st. Currently, Parks and Recreation is available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime; for cable viewers, it’s broadcast on both E! and FXX. Created by The Office alums Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, Parks and Recreation enjoyed a seven-season run on NBC before Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and the rest of her Pawnee friends bid adieu in 2015. Over the course of its 125 episodes, the show earned 16 Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nods, as well as helped launch the careers of Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, and others. This is just the latest major acquisition for Comedy Central. It previously snagged Fox’s King of the Hill and Bojack Horseman; the latter was an especially major deal, as it marked the first Netflix original series to be syndicated on cable TV. Check out some best-of highlights below, including Andy’s (Pratt) musical tribute to the one and only Li’l Sebastian. Source
  16. Jackie Fuchs used to be known as Jackie Fox back when she was bassist for The Runaways, but now she’s known as the reigning Jeopardy! champion. The rockstar-turned-lawyer-turned-gameshow favorite is in the midst of four-night win streak on the iconic answer-and-question program. Tonight’s episode sees her once again defending her crown. However, it turns out she wasn’t just battling her opponents while filming her fifth appearance, but her own body. TMZ reports that Fuchs suffered a scary medical emergency right before the interview break. Fuchs said she’s been having stomach issues for a few months that have prevented her from maintaining a healthy eating regiment. “We got to the show after lunch, and I just didn’t eat enough because I couldn’t,” she explained. “I just ran out of steam… I had this really serious hyperglycemic episode that I thought was a stroke at the time that I had it. I couldn’t get my hands to work. My brain was seeing one thing and mouth was saying another.” Fuchs tried to avoid spoilers while speaking to TMZ, but she mentioned the audience “groaned at one point because I said something so inane. I’m afraid it’s going to be one of the worst moments on Jeopardy! ever.” It’s possible that the incident will be edited out of the episode entirely. Fuchs said she made herself get up and finish the game out of respect for her opponents. She wouldn’t say how it all ended, but a victory after something like that would certainly go down as one of the greatest moments on Jeopardy! ever, not the worst. The latest episode of Jeopardy! airs tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET. Watch Fuchs reveal her rock and roll past on the show below. Source
  17. Jack Ü as a group has been done for a while now, but that doesn’t negate the fact that there’s a crapload of demos from the project still just existing in purgatory – remember that Florence + The Machine collab that never got released? Yeah, we still think about it. During the time the project was in its peak, a lot of other producers were working with them on tracks. For instance, “Light Me Up” on RL Grime’s NOVA was originally a Jack Ü demo with just Miguel. When Diplo showed it to RL, and Jack Ü went bottom up, RL took it and got Julia Michaels on it, and we have what we have now. Another producer to have apparently worked on Jack Ü demos is Wuki. How do we know this? Graves asked him point blank on Twitter yesterday, “Maybe you will release all your jack u demos.” To everyone’s surprise, Wuki responded, “Hahahahaha actually one is going to see the light of day soon.” So keep in mind, this definitely isn’t going to be a new Jack Ü track coming out. That being said, it’s a track that had Jack Ü in mind when Wuki produced it, so it might be enough to cut the craving just a bit. Like drinking non-alcoholic beer when you’ve given it up the real stuff for Lent. It might not be the same, but it’s close… Keep an eye out for new music from Wuki coming soon, it might just sound familiar. 18. Earlier today it was revealed that “Sicko Mode” rapper Travis Scott would be joining Maroon 5 at this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show. The decision came as something of a surprise, as Rihanna’s refusal to perform due to the NFL’s treatment of peaceful protestor Colin Kaepernick essentially made the decision a political one. That reportedly has made the search a tough one for the NFL, which is likely delighted with Scott’s participation. Scott, however, is hearing about it from a few of his most high-profile fans. Variety reports that JAY-Z, who was spotted with Beyoncé at Scott’s show in Los Angeles last night, is “attempting to talk Scott out of performing.” It makes sense, as Hov’s been a vocal supporter of Kaepernick’s protest, not to mention an advocate in the ongoing protests of police brutality in America. He, too, was rumored to have turned down an offer to perform at this year’s Halftime Show due to his allegiance to Kaepernick. JAY-Z collaborator Meek Mill also expressed his disappointment with Scott on Twitter. “For what????” he wrote while linking to an article about Scott’s performance. In a follow-up tweet, he added, “He don’t need that he on fire already! Stay strong in this shit!” For what???? https://t.co/oTZ4PsDqcD — Meek Mill (@MeekMill) December 20, 2018 He don’t need that he on fire already! Stay strong in this shit! — Meek Mill (@MeekMill) December 20, 2018 One wonders if JAY-Z is also calling up Cardi B and Big Boi, both of whom are also rumored to be joining the halftime performance. 19. Last year, we presented readers with a study that analyzed social media data to reveal which types of drugs were most closely related to which music festivals. The information gleaned wasn’t terribly surprising, like marijuana being common at Marley Fest or LSD being most popular at Electric Forest. A new study, however, further examines the connection between music and drug culture by revealing which genre attracts the most users. DrugAbuse.com (via Metal Injection) surveyed 976 music festival attendees (not exactly a quorum), and the results again weren’t always terribly revelatory. The fact that alcohol (a legal drug) and marijuana (an increasingly legal drug) were the most common substances used at music events shouldn’t stun anyone who’s ever been to a festival. Nor should the fact that EDM fans are the most likely to be intoxicated at a show; but the fact that heavy metal heads are second on the list might be a bit of a surprise. The report found that 62.2% of heavy metal fans got intoxicated at shows, compared to 58.7% of hip-hop listeners, 46.6% of country fans, and just 39.8% of pop concert attendees. Those who favored folk music were more likely to consume drugs (56%) than blues (50%), R&B/soul (42.4%), or jazz (40.7%) enthusiasts. It’s interesting to note that heavy metal fans were only in the top three users by percentage when it came to alcohol, coming in second with 56.2%. (Top honors went to alternative concertgoers with 57.6%, while EDM parties came in third with 54.9%.) Less surprising is the fact that 33.3% of reggae event attendees and 29.6% of hip-hop fans smoked weed, and that MDMA was far more popular at EDM shows (25.6%) than at either of the other top three genres (reggae at 4.8% and indie rock at 3.0%). Perhaps least shocking of all is that EDM concertgoers were listed in the top three users for all drugs (alcohol, marijuana, MDMA, hallucinogens, cocaine, and opioids), except for benzodiazepines. That actually lines up with the festival study from 2017. In that study, cocaine was most popular with attendees of Tomorrowland and Mad Decent Block Party, while MDMA was common at MDBP and Electric Zoo. Marijuana was, naturally, a favorite of Marley fans and Camp Bisco attendees, while alcohol took over a big percentage of Summerfest and Ozzfest users. 41% of heavy metal fans said they consumed alcohol or drugs to reduce social anxiety, which 40% of indie rock concertgoers also agreed with. Meanwhile, EDM users were split over increasing energy (41%), experimentation (25%), enjoyment enhancement (77%), and connecting more with the artist (31%). Folk fans (49%) and indie rock (39%) attendees seemed most pulled simply by drugs becoming available. The researchers also figured out what age certain genre fans were more likely to start taking drugs at live music events. Heavy metal and EDM fans usually got into the stuff before they hit 20, with the span between 20 and 21 being popular staring points for fans of classic rock, reggae, hip-hop, alternative, folk, and indie rock. Jazz and blues listeners tended to wait until they were between 23 and 24 (I find it hard to believe it took them that long to try a “jazz cigarette”), with classical music attendees being the latest bloomers at 25. Though it may not be the most groundbreaking (or thorough) study, the survey does provide some interesting data points when you see it all spelled out. Regardless of your genre or drug of choice, however, it’s important to remember to stay smart and stay safe. Reach out to folks like Detox or Harmonium (who provide safe, sober spaces at music events) if you’re having trouble, and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from onsite medical or security personnel. None of these people are going to get you in trouble; literally their only job is to keep you safe, and that includes helping you out if you’re intoxicated. And remember, you don’t have to do all the drugs to have a good time. Source

  21. Korn have been busy working on their 13th album, and when we recently caught up with guitarist Brian “Head” Welch to discuss his new documentary, Loud Krazy Love, which just premiered on Showtime, he also offered us a little insight into what fans can expect from the upcoming disc. For the most part, Korn have split the year between spending time with family and working on the new album, with Head telling us, “We all have our lives, our personal lives, and some of these guys have young children, so we decided to just take a year off, and just kind of take our time. Everyone is really enjoying time at home with their kids, so we work and then we take a break, and we work, and take a break.” Back in August, drummer Ray Luzier revealed he was laying down tracks for the disc in Nashville with producer Nick Raskulinecz. As for the latest progress, Head tells us, “At this time, guitars aren’t finished, and I don’t know if we’re done writing. We’ve written a lot, but I’m not sure if we’re done writing yet. Bass is not done. Most of the drums are done on the songs we have, and a little bit of vocals have been worked on.” And while there’s still a long way to go, Head has confidence that fans will be in for a treat once the disc arrives, saying, “We’ve got some amazing tricks up our sleeves that we haven’t done before, some fun things that the fans are going to be pleasantly surprised by. I know that for a fact.” As to when the album will come out, Head first jokes, “No later than 2022,” before adding, in all seriousness, “We’d love to get it out before the end of next year. I know there’s a lot of good bands coming out with music next year. It’s gonna be exciting.” With Korn potentially added to a list of bands releasing new albums in 2019 that includes Slipknot, Deftones, Rammstein, and possibly even Tool, Head says rock music is in a good place, despite Gene Simmons’ claim a couple years ago that “rock is dead.” “With all due respect to Gene Simmons, we’re playing festivals with all our friends’ bands all over the world, and at each of those festivals there’s a sea of people,” Head tells us. “Rock is dead? Doesn’t look like it to me, in my life. Sure, it’s like the stock market, it goes up and down, but in the long scheme of things, it’s always rising. So, we don’t have to worry about rock music. It’s going to be fine. And there’s going to be a revival, too. And it’s going to be in the mainstream again. I’m not worried about it.” Head also addressed Korn singer Jonathan Davis’ recent comments that Korn and Limp Bizkit were “the last guard of that time of the big, real rock bands” when they were dominating MTV’s Total Request Live alongside acts like *NSync and the Backstreet Boys. “What Jonathan meant was that it was the era of MTV, and everybody was watching TRL and everything,” explains Welch. “That’s all gone now. It’s all just YouTube and the Internet right now, so it’s just never going to be like that again, where it’s all just lumped into one thing. Everything is separated now. So, I agree [with Jonathan] in that respect. Obviously, there are bands who are huge — Metallica, System of a Down, others — so there are huge rock bands, but what he meant was having everything thrown together and having all eyes on it. All eyes aren’t going to be on one TV channel anymore. That’s gone.” As mentioned, we also talked with Welch, as well as his daughter, Jennea, about their new documentary, Loud Krazy Love. 22. Exactly one week ago Movement Festival unveiled a sneak peek of what’s to come in 2019. As one of the premier house and techno events in the US people were expecting a lot from them, and they delivered. With every lineup reveal there are criticisms but people have to keep in mind that this is only a 10 names, there WILL be a little something for everyone once we get the rest! But for now we get to know that we’ll be enjoying the likes of Orbital – Live, this performance will be their first in Detroit in nearly 20 years, and their first time ever playing at Movement. If that alone doesn’t get you excited than I have no idea what will. Orbital’s performance at Movement is the perfect showcase to expose this new generation of electronic music fans to these UK dance music pioneers. Orbital are not the only ones making their festival debut in 2019 though. Other first-timers include Amelie Lens, Chris Lake, DJ Nobu, Heiko Laux and Stephan Bodzin – live. Coming off of a sold out show at Spybar Chicago this December, Amelie Lens has been taking the dance music scene by storm as of late and will no doubt have a killer set in Detroit. Another exciting addition is seeing DJ Nobu on the lineup. Hailing from Japan and being the head behind the label Bitta, we can only expect his quintessential underground, yet ever-changing sound to ring out from the depths of the Underground Stage. While being able to catch these amazing national and international names the real treat lies in seeing artists perform in their hometown. This teaser alone gives us three of Detroit’s very own — Danny Brown, DJ Bone as well as Detroit Techno legend Robert Hood performing as Floorplan – live. Movement 2019 3-Day Weekend and Daily Passes for both GA and VIP are now available for purchase at www.movement.us. Payment Plan options are also available. 24. The phase 1 lineup for Ultra 2019 just dropped and it’s massive! With Marshmello, The Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix and Zedd as returning as headliners, plus new names Rezz, Zeds Dead, and NGHTMRE & Slander making their main stage debuts, next year is shaping up to be another stellar year for Ultra Music Festival. But how does it stack up against the past four years of Ultra? Well, let’s start with the obvious: Ultra plays favorites. Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta and Tiësto will never not play Ultra. The same goes for many of the Resistance artists: The Martinez Brothers are back, as are Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones and Joseph Capriati, Loco Dice, and Sasha + John Digweed. We assume Hardwell would be playing 2019 as well if he didn’t make the decision earlier this year to take a break from live shows for a while. However, while Ultra does play favorites, they also like to throw some curveballs. In 2015, Skrillex took to the main stage, and Martin Garrix played it for the first time in his career. Die Antwoord, Deep Dish, Porter Robinson, Kygo, and Bassnectar also all featured as fan favorites. In 2016, Pendulum live made its return, plus Rabbit in the Moon. 2017 was by far the weakest of the past four years for the main stage, but the live stage was surprisingly awesome: Ice Cube, Justice, The Prodigy, and Underworld. Then in 2018, Ultra brought back Swedish House Mafia, Marshmello and The Chainsmokers headlined the main stage, and Virtual Self dominated the live stage. So how does 2019 stack up? Well, aside from the lineup, there are a lot of unknown variables this year. The biggest of all is that we have no idea what the new stages will be like – with the new venue, it opens up a lot of possibilities, including a larger live stage. It wouldn’t make much sense to put Odesza in that tiny amphitheater in Bayfront Park. But a new live stage with unknown capacity? Now, that’s something Ultra can work with. In addition, deadmau5 will debut his Cube 3.0 for the first time, Illenium will play Ultra for the first time, Griz will play Ultra for the first time, and there’s still more to be announced. Plus, Jeffrey Sutorius makes his solo debut after breaking up with Dash Berlin. As for the main stage headliners in 2019, Rezz, Zeds Dead, and NGHTMRE & Slander present Gud Vibrations will finally all get their shot. However, the decision to bring The Chainsmokers and Marshmello back to the main stage for the second year in a row is questionable; it stands to reason that their sets will be fairly similar to this year’s. A lot of The Chainsmokers’ 2018 set was made of IDs from their new album Sick Boy, including the unreleased collaborations with NGHTMRE and Aazar. Now that they’re out, what new music will they have to push? As for Marshmello, he’s put out plenty of new music in 2018, but you can’t bring out Will Smith two years in a row. And he’s also quite the DJ chameleon, playing whatever the crowd wants to hear. In a way, his sets will never go awry, but there isn’t much experimentation there, either. With still more artists to be announced, we’re excited and hopeful about the state of Ultra 2019. But as for phase 1 and how it stacks up against the past four years, it’s a strong contender for best of the bunch. Check out the past four years’ phase 1 lineups below, as well as this year’s. 25. After a week of silence, Cannibal Corpse have finally released a statement about the recent arrest of the band’s guitarist Pat O’Brien on charges of burglary and assault. More details on this story emerged yesterday, with the Tampa Bay Times reporting that a search warrant to O’Brien’s rented home in Northdale, Florida, had turned up an arsenal listed as roughly 50 shotguns, 10 semiautomatic rifles (including a couple variants of AK-47s), two Uzi-style rifles, 20 handguns, a sawed-off shotgun, and other weapons. Also in the house were hundreds of rounds of ammunition and three skulls. Cannibal Corpse’s official statement, as posted on their Facebook page, reads as follows: As a band and as individuals, we all want nothing but the best for our brother and partner, Pat. While we can offer no further information about the incident, we wanted everyone to know that Pat is getting the help he needs and appreciates the love and support from Cannibal Corpse fans around the world. Pat is currently with family and friends and looks forward to a healthy return at some point. For anyone wondering, all Cannibal Corpse touring will happen as planned and all shows will be played. While that should reassure fans that were concerned about the band’s upcoming slate of shows on the spring 2019 North American leg of Slayer’s farewell tour, that does leave open the possibility that they will soldier on without O’Brien, if necessary. O’Brien has been officially charged with “aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer with deadly weapon, and burglary of an occupied dwelling with assault or battery.” The 53-year-old musician was arrested on December 10th after allegedly entering a neighbor’s home and pushing one of its residents to the ground, while telling the occupants the rapture was coming. He was found later that night by the police hiding behind a fence and allegedly charged at one of the arresting officers with a knife. He reportedly had to be tased several times in order to be detained. At the time of these incidents, the house O’Brien was renting caught on fire, complete with the aforementioned arsenal of weapons. He was released from prison this past Friday after posting bail. Source
