  1. Slim Jxmmi, one-half of rap duo Rae Sremmurd, was reportedly involved in a bloody street fight in Auckland, New Zealand on Thursday afternoon. According to TMZ, one person was taken to the hospital due to stabbing injuries sustained in the fight. Details are a bit sketchy, but apparently a brawl erupted after someone began recording Rae Sremmurd. In a separate video obtained by TMZ, Slim Jxmmi is seen wrestling with several people on the ground. Members of Rae Sremmurd’s entourage, including the group’s bodyguard, were reportedly also involved in the altercation. Slim Jxmmi was later seen talking to police, but so far no arrests have been made, according to TMZ. Rae Sremmurd are scheduled to appear at Australia’s FOMO Festival over the weekend. Source
  2. The Coachella lineup just dropped moments ago, and we have to say, this is one of our favorite lineups in a while. The headliners, for once, aren’t all megastars or returning-from-retirement groups. Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande are young, hungry artists who are going to put everything they have on the line and I’m willing to bet they surprise you. But the headliners are only one part of the equation. The rest of the lineup makes up 90% of your day at the festival, and it has to keep you entertained. Thankfully, most days that won’t be an issue. Friday DJ Snake, Diplo, RÜFÜS DU SOL, FISHER, Nina Kraviz, Gorgon City, Kayzo, Jauz, Chris Lake, Hot Since 82, SOPHIE, Nicole Moudaber, Pole & Pan, Nora En Pure, SG Lewis, Nic Fanciulli, Kolsch, Camelphat, Anna Lunoe, Walker & Royce, Ross From Friends Saturday Aphex Twin, Bassnectar, Four Tet, Gryffin, Bob Moses, Tale Of Us, Deep Dish, Idris Elba, CloZee, ARIZONA, Ame, Lee Burridge, Ookay, Steven Bodzin Sunday Zedd, Gesaffelstein, Dillon Francis, Cirez D, Kaytranada, Jon Hopkins, SOFI TUKKER, NGHTMRE, Guy Gerber, Shallou, Charlotte de Witte, Dusky, Yotto DJ Snake returns to Coachella, as does Diplo (without Skrillex). FISHER gets higher billing than Kayzo, Jauz, and even Chris Lake — clearly Grammy nominations do a lot. Aphex Twin and Bassnectar are the dance music headliners on Saturday, which is a strange look for Coachella but a very much appreciated one. Sunday features even more heavy hitters, with Zedd, Dillon, and Kaytranada all returning to the Polo Fields. Gesaffelstein makes his grand return to the festival since he bid it farewell in 2015, and Eric Prydz will take the stage as Cirez D. And keep in mind there’s still the Do Lab and Heineken Stage lineups still to be announced. Passes go on sale Friday at 11am PT. Photo via Rukes.com This article was first published on Your EDM. 3. For the first time since the festival’s inception, both weekends of Coachella will be live streamed on YouTube. Previously, only the first weekend was made available online. That means home viewers will have the opportunity to see the Coachella 2019 lineup in its total, full glory: Back-to-back weekends headlined by Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Aphex Twin. Other notable acts to catch on the live stream include Solange, Janelle Monáe, Aphex Twin, Billie Eilish, The 1975, Anderson .Paak, Kacey Musgraves, Kid Cudi, Weezer, CHVRCHES, Gesaffelstein, Christine and the Queens, Mac DeMarco, Maggie Rogers, Blood Orange, and Jaden Smith. If you’ll recall, last year’s live stream gave us a historic set from Beyonce. Coachella 2019 goes down in Indio, California from April 12th-14th, and then for a second weekend from April 19th-21st. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 4th at 11:00 a.m. PST via Coachella’s website. They tend to sell out quickly, so you might also want to try your luck on the secondary market. Source
  4. For a genre so indebted to being “in the now,” pop albums sure do have endurance. They’re events, no different than a ’90s Hollywood blockbuster, back when the expiration date wasn’t two weeks after its release and one movie could dominate an entire season. That’s why when pop albums flop — and, as we saw in 2017, even those at the top can flop — they’re a major story because so much has been baked into them. The production! The marketing! The collaborations! The anticipation! Oh yes, the anticipation. Anticipation can be poison for pop artists. They roll out an album, they live with said album for a few years (unless, you know, they’re Lana Del Rey), and they retreat for some time. But if anticipation leads to disappointment? “Thank you, next.” That kind of dismissal isn’t just felt, it’s worn until the next cycle begins, which is why pop artists are such a rare breed and why the greatest pop albums demand so much respect. They’re almost an anomaly. Think about that as the anticipation settles in ahead. Rest assured, it will. –Michael Roffman Editor-in-Chief __________________________________________________________ Carly Rae Jepsen Carly Rae Jepsen, Lollapalooza 2018, photo by Caroline Daniel Why We’re Excited: 2015’s Emotion cemented Carly Rae Jepsen as so much more than a one-hit pop wonder. The Canadian pop star’s third album found her upping the ante with banger after banger that shed the teen equivocating of ultra-hit “Call Me Maybe” and found a more mature singer telling listeners precisely what she wanted — no maybes to be found. That same confidence has spilled over to “Party for One”, the first single from Jepsen’s upcoming fourth record. For an artist whose biggest hits tend to be about relationships, it’s almost empowering to see Jepsen learn that a little self-love and a night in makes for a far better evening than time wasted on a scrub. Still, knowing Jepsen, we wouldn’t be shocked if her quiet, little party turned into the biggest bash of the year. –Matt Melis Sample: __________________________________________________________ Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell Lana Del Rey, photo by Philip Cosores Why We’re Excited: After lending her voice to everyone from Cat Power to Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2018, Lana Del Rey spent the latter half of the year teasing listeners with two samples — “Mariners Apartment Complex” and the sprawling “Venice Bitch” — from her upcoming sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell. She’s followed that up with the live debut of another song expected to be included, “How to Disappear”, and the promise of a third single a week from yesterday. Let’s just say that Del Rey’s teasing has worked. While the artist has described the Jack Antonoff-produced album as having a lighter mood and a sense of humor, we won’t make the mistake of thinking this album will be any less meticulous in its crafting or any less capable of allowing us to drift away and lose ourselves in the experience. –Matt Melis Sample: __________________________________________________________ Ariana Grande – thank u, next Ariana Grande Why We’re Excited: It’s been a tumultuous couple of years for Ariana Grande. On one hand, songs like “No Tears Left to Cry” and “God Is a Woman” have made her arguably the biggest pop star on the planet. At the same time, she’s witnessed a terrorist attack that murdered 23 and injured 500 more at her Manchester, England, concert in 2017; grieved following ex-boyfriend Mac Miller’s fatal overdose last May; and endured every kind of public scrutiny possible during her short time dating comedian Pete Davidson. It was all so much that Grande announced she’d be taking a break from music. However, that didn’t last long, as she soon returned to the studio and released the eponymous lead single from her upcoming album, thank u, next. Not only did Grande turn her painful experiences into her first No. 1 hit in America, but she also reminded us that art can help lead ourselves and others out of the darkest of places. –Matt Melis Sample: __________________________________________________________ Rihanna Why We’re Excited: It’s been three long years since Rihanna released her double-platinum eighth album, Anti-, but she’s hardly been out of the spotlight. In fact, quite the opposite, having starred in a number of productions, including last year’s Ocean’s Eight and the final season of Bates Motel, and being named both Harvard’s “Humanitarian of the Year” and Barbados’ Ambassador at-Large. For her highly anticipated followup, Rihanna’s been rather mum, though she did confirm it’ll be a reggae album influenced by (and possibly involving) legendary dancehall producer Supa Dups, which jives with reports that over 500 records have been submitted by some of the biggest producers connected to the genre. Whats more, given her recent collaborations with Future, Pharrell, Calvin Harris, and Kendrick Lamar, the latter of which earned her another Grammy, her assists will likely be deep, with rumors hinting at a collaboration with Cardi B. Whatever the case, as her go-to vocal producer Kuk Harrell says, it’s going to be “incredible.” —Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Madonna Madonna, photo by Philip Cosores Why We’re Excited: 2019 is going to be a big year for Madonna, who tipped things off with an impromptu New Year’s Eve appearance at Stonewall Inn, the iconic LGBTQ venue in Greenwich Village, New York. As she teased on Instagram, “2019………... Im going make you my best friend, my mother, my father, my son, my daughter, my sister, my brother, my lover, my ride or die, my co-pilot, my confidante, my muse, my spirit animal, my teacher, my stage, my audience, my high priestess. . My Queen, My Warrior, My Word, My Prayer that I. Send out to the world!” While that doesn’t say anything about her hotly anticipated followup to 2015’s Rebel Heart, we do know the album is coming, and that it should even be mixed by now, at least if we’re to take this November tease to heart. As for the sound, the Queen of Pop previewed a new song titled “Beautiful Game” at last year’s Met Gala and has stated how the album’s been infused with “Portuguese fado music.” Perhaps we’re due for some light musical history before the big drop? –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Mark Ronson Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson Why We’re Excited: It’s not that we’re not used to seeing Mark Ronson’s name. It’s just that we’re used to seeing it farther down in the fine print of the credits. So it raises our well-kempt eyebrows to find Ronson, who has written and produced more hits than Cardi B has shoes to throw, opting to step into the spotlight for a change. We only have a lead single and a dynamic Saturday Night Live performance to lean on, but if Ronson’s full-length sounds anywhere near as good as his “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” pairing with singer-muse Miley Cyrus, our achy breaky hearts will be well on the mend come release time. –Matt Melis Sample: __________________________________________________________ Sky Ferriera – Masochism Sky Ferreira, photo by Heather Kaplan Why We’re Excited: In the time following the release of her outstanding 2013 debut Night Time, My Time, Sky Ferreira has been working slavishly over its aptly titled followup, Masochism. Once again, she’s been collaborating with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, in addition to executive producers Mike Dean and Rahki, with the theme of the album exploring how she’s moved from believing “if it doesn’t hurt then it’s not real” to being more confident in her self-value. While she’s teased of releases in the past — and there are enough stops and starts to this thing to warrant an incredible oral history — it appears as if we’re finally going to see it in 2019. In November, she ostensibly confirmed the news on her own Instagram account, writing, “this winter it is official (!).” Mind you, Spring begins on March 20th, so we’ll see. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Dua Lipa Dua Lipa, photo by Ben Kaye Why We’re Excited: Ever wonder what people do in their spare time these days? Simple. They watch and stream Dua Lipa videos and songs — to the tune of billions. The numbers don’t lie. At only 23, the English singer-songwriter has already been a YouTube sensation, hosted her own festival overseas (Sunny Hill Festival), and collaborated with talents like Silk City, Miguel, and Calvin Harris on hit songs that have been streamed hundreds of millions of times. While it might seem like there’s nowhere to go but down from those dizzying heights as a twentysomething, we’re more curious to find out if Lipa can take her craft to the next level, which means more than pumping out must-dance bangers. It means banging out an irresistible full-length. If she can do that, the “New Rules” star will make all the rules going forward. –Matt Melis Sample: __________________________________________________________ Grimes Grimes, photo by Heather Kaplan Why We’re Excited: The last year has been absolutely bonkers for Grimes. Her relationship to billionaire Elon Musk made her a household name — and warranted some of the greatest headlines in a year of headlines — while she managed to stay just as busy creatively without actually releasing her followup to 2015’s Art Angels. From collaborations with Janelle (“Pynk”) and Mindless Self Indulgence’s Jimmy Urine (“The Medicine Does Not Control Me”) to songs for Netflix and Apple, Claire Boucher was unstoppable. She ended the year, however, with straight-up business, delivering her new single “We Appreciate Power”, and teasing what might even be the new album cover. Even so, the album remains elusive, and could really be anything based on prior knowledge. If you recall, back in June, she shared a number of demos, all steeped in electronica, and earlier that February, she teased two albums in a since-deleted tweet: “The second one will be extreme darkness and chaos, the first will be highly collaborative and most glorious light.” Seeing how she’s wont to scrap ideas at the 25th hour, Grimes’ next album will likely remain a surprise until it’s finally streaming. –Michael Roffman Sample: __________________________________________________________ Charli XCX Charli XCX, photo by Philip Cosores Why We’re Excited: If you’re not counting mixtapes, Charli XCX hasn’t released an album since 2014’s Sucker. (If you do, she dropped her Pop 2 mixtape in 2017, so back off.) But hey, new year, new resolutions, and making a new album is at the top of her list, according to her first tweet of 2019. Right after that is to release it, which means, according to our powers of deduction, that we’ll likely be seeing said followup to Sucker sometime before the carolers come out again. Now, it’s easy to forget five years later, but Sucker was a major blockbuster for the singer, delivering singles like “Boom Clap” and “Break the Rules”, which certainly adds some weight to this next chapter. Given her string of hits from last year, specifically “No Angel”, “5 in the Morning”, and especially her Troye Sivan collaboration, “1999”, we think she’ll be just fine. Now, if only we could make our own resolutions count. –Michael Roffman Source
  5. The wait is almost over for Rammstein’s first album in 10 years. Guitarist Richard Kruspe reports that the band has wrapped up work on the upcoming disc, and that they have big plans in terms of visuals for the album. Kruspe told Kerrang!, “We flew to Los Angeles to mix the record with Rich Costey, who has worked with Muse and a bunch of other big bands. It looks like we will have five music videos coming out this time, too. I feel really happy with the album, although a few things might still change, of course.” He continued, “It’s so funny — during this recording process we’ve been like six guys in a band, arguing about each tiny fucking snare hit. That was also such an intense experience. You name it, everything you could argue about we have. But now that it’s done, I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved. And actually, that intensity is what made our songs even better.” In our own interview with Kruspe last month, the guitarist told Heavy Consequence that the album will likely come out in April. He added, “For me, one of the reasons to step back into making records with Rammstein was to balance the popularity of the band as a live act with the actual music. With Rammstein, people tend to talk about the fire and all the live stuff. I thought, ‘I don’t want to be another KISS,’ where people talk about makeup and stuff like that and no one talks about the music.” [See Also: 10 Most Anticipated Metal Albums of 2019] Rammstein just played a pair of shows to celebrate the new year in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (watch their performance of “Du Hast” below). They’ve also announced a European stadium tour that will kick off at the end of June. View their current itinerary here. Source
  6. Netflix has been chopping down its Marvel shows left and right, with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist all getting the axe (after strong seasons from each, no less). Two series still remain, however, and the next one up isn’t going down without a fight. The premiere date for season two of The Punisher has today been revealed in a tense new teaser trailer. Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) will don the skull vest for what is likely the final time when The Punisher premieres on January 18th. The second season of the Daredevil spin-off will see Castle going up against a villain of his own creation, as Ben Barnes returns as Billy Russo. After the events of last season’s finale, though, Russo’s face and mind are shredded, turning him into the unhinged Jigsaw. Both characters get an intense introduction in the new teaser, which you can watch below. Speaking with io9, Barnes explained how the show will be taking a more grounded approach to his character than the comics (or Punisher: War Zone) did: “We’re talking abut a deeply narcissistic character — in season one — whose mask of appeal in terms of doing his hair and the nice suits and all that kind of stuff has been stripped away from him. It’s about what he sees when he looks in the mirror rather than necessarily what other people see, because we didn’t want [Billy’s story] to be a horror show. It’s something more internal. We don’t refer to the character as Jigsaw in the series, but he very much has a jigsaw puzzle in his brain. It’s not about his face, it’s about the psychological, which is really something we wanted to focus on this season.” (Read: Ranking: Every Marvel Movie and TV Show from Worst to Best) The Punisher season two will also star Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, and Josh Stewart as John PIlgrim, a new villain loosely based on the comic character Mennonite. It’s worth sadly noting that Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who played Micro in season one, isn’t listed on any official character sheets. Netflix still has a third season of Jessica Jones expected to drop later this year, but that will probably mark the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the streaming service. The shakeup likely has its roots in the fact that Disney will be launching its own streaming service, Disney+, this year. Shows centered on Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) from the Avengers movies are anticipated on the new service, and fans are holding out hope that The Defenders find a second life on Disney+ or elsewhere. 7. Get ready, ’cause 2019 is shaping up to be the biggest year in metal in a long time. While 2018 saw a number of stellar releases by up-and-coming and underground acts, 2019 is the year the big guns return with new music. While our fingers are still crossed, it’s looking very likely that progressive-metal titans Tool will finally unleash their first album since 2006. Not to mention, Rammstein are slated to drop their first disc in 10 years this spring. If that’s not enough, Slipknot are ready to return with a brand-new album this summer, having already unveiled the first single this past Halloween day. [See Also: Top 25 Metal + Hard Rock Albums of 2018] Meanwhile, bands who have consistently put out great albums throughout their careers are plotting new discs in 2019, among them Deftones, Gojira, and Baroness, to name a few. The year has just begun, but we’re already chomping at the bit for what 2019 will bring in terms of heavy music. See our 10 Most Anticipated Metal Albums of 2019 below. –Spencer Kaufman Managing Editor, Heavy Consequence __________________________________________________________ Baroness Why We’re Excited: Baroness are one of the most consistent metal acts of the 21st century, having released four critically acclaimed albums, starting with their debut disc, 2007’s Red Album. The Georgia band survived a horrific bus crash in England in 2012, with three members sustaining serious injuries. Only frontman John Baizley remains from that lineup, with longtime guitarist Peter Adams leaving the band in 2017. Now, with a revamped look, Baizley and company are working on their follow-up to 2015’s Purple, which saw Baroness move more into a more progressive rock sound while still maintaining the metal riffing of their earlier works. Expect to hear some new tunes on Baroness’ co-headlining tour with Deafheaven, launching in March. __________________________________________________________ Deftones Why We’re Excited: Anytime Deftones release new music, the excitement is palpable. The Sacramento, California, act has been churning out stellar albums since the mid ’90s, having emerged from the nu-metal scene to form a sound that is very much their own. The band started to tease fans with a few studio pics this past summer, and then confirmed a 2019 release with an Instagram post in early December. While they’ve put out an impressive discography, the reaction to Deftones’ last album, Gore, was mixed, with fans hoping the alt-metal heroes’ next disc will top that effort. __________________________________________________________ Gojira Why We’re Excited: Gojira should have a lot of music to choose from for their next album, as frontman Joe Duplantier told Metal Injection this past summer, “Usually we write 12 songs and record 12 songs and release 12 songs. Now it looks like we’re going to write 100 songs. It’s a different approach and it’s fun.” The French metal mavens are one of the most respected acts to break out in the 21st century, coming off the Grammy-nominated 2016 album, Magma. __________________________________________________________ Killswitch Engage Why We’re Excited: After a long run with Roadrunner Records, metalcore pioneers Killswitch Engage have inked a new deal with Metal Blade, and will unleash their eighth album in 2019, which also marks the Massachusetts act’s 20th anniversary as a band. Singer Jesse Leach recently wrapped up his vocal tracks, telling fans he poured his “blood (actual blood), sweat, tears, more sweat, anxiety, anger, hope, love, frustration, passion and full on heartbreak are injected into every single word.” The band will co-headline a North American tour with Parkway Drive beginning in April, perhaps signaling a spring release for the new album. __________________________________________________________ Korn Why We’re Excited: Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch recently told Heavy Consequence that “fans are going to be pleasantly surprised” by the band’s upcoming 13th album, adding that “we’ve got some amazing tricks up our sleeves that we haven’t done before.” The nu-metal trailblazers’ last album, 2016’s The Serenity of Suffering, was well received as a return to form for Korn. While the band is far from done making the new album, Head suggested to us that they are gunning for a late 2019 release. __________________________________________________________ Source
  8. In 2003’s box-office hit School of Rock, washed-up rocker turned teacher Jack Black used the power of rock and roll to bring together a class of young prep school students. And proving that the power of music endures, it seems those same kids are still friends more than 15 years later. A handful of the School of Rock kids reunited on New Year’s Eve, meeting up for dinner and drinks at a New York City bar. Now well into their twenties, the reconvened group included Brian Falduto (Billy), James Hosey (Marco), Becca Brown (Katie), Zachary Infante (Gordon), and Aleisha Lanae Allen (Alicia). Angelo Massagli (Frankie) and Caitlin Hale (Marta), who appear to be dating, also joined in on the fun. (Read: What Ever Happened to the School of Rock Kids?) Speaking to TMZ, Brown said that even when they’re not physically hanging out together, they all keep in touch via a group text chat. Miranda Cosgrove, who played Summer “Tinkerbell” Hathaway, was noticeably absent, and sadly, Jack Black also missed out on the festivities. Even so, Black’s Dewey Finn likely would be quite proud of his class, as many of his students are still kickin’ it in showbiz. Below, check out a pair of pics from the School of Rock kids reunion. Here they are back in 2003 for comparison: Revisit the trailer for School of Rock, which was directed by Richard Linklater and also starred Mike White, Sarah Silverman, and Joan Cusack. Source
  9. Back in the fall, it was announced that the acclaimed David Bowie Is traveling art exhibition would be making its next stop on your phone with a new AR app. With five days left before the augmented reality tour through Bowie’s life becomes available, it’s now been revealed that actor Gary Oldman has provided the app’s narration. The digital adaptation of the touring exhibit brings an AR interpretation of the museum experience into the palm of your hands. The first of its kind presentation “mirrors the physical exhibition through a sequence of audio-visual spaces through which the works and artifacts of Bowie’s life can be explored.” As you explore 360-degree 3D renderings of Bowies costumes, storyboards, handwritten lyrics, diary entries, and more (including dozens of pieces not seen in the original exhibition), you’ll be provided guidance by Oldman’s voice as well as Bowie’s music and his own narration. (Read: The 50 Greatest Rock and Roll Movies of All Time) “This brings the amazing David Bowie Is exhibition to a wider audience. It’s great that his fans get to experience it. It was a privilege to be involved,” Oldman said in a press release. A close friend of Bowie’s who starred alongside the late Starman in Julian Schnabel’s film Basquiat and the video for “The Next Day”, Oldman added, “I see him less as ‘David Bowie’ and more as ‘Dave from Brixton and I’m Gary from New Cross’.” At a price of $7.99, the David Bowie Is… Virtual app will be available for iOS and Android devices beginning January 8th, which would have marked Bowie’s 72nd birthday. You can watch a short preview of the AR experience at the app’s website. Source
  10. Fashion designer and ASAP Mob co-founder ASAP Bari has pleaded guilty to sexual assaulting a woman at a London hotel in July 2017. ASAP Bari (né Jabari Shelton) appeared in a London court on Thursday (January 3rd), where he entered his guilty plea on one count of sexual assault. He was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and $3,150 in compensation to his victim. Back in May, ASAP Bari was arrested after video surfaced that seemed to depict him sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel. At the time, ASAP Bari called the video “a misleading video clip featuring adult content and activity” that had been released to the public “without my knowledge or consent,” adding, “I’m disappointed in the situation as well as myself and will reflect on the situation appropriately.” He initially filed a defamation lawsuit against the woman who made the allegations. Though he’s settled his legal issues overseas, ASAP Bari is still facing charges back in the US. In November, he was pulled over while driving in Pennsylvania and found to be in possession of 27 circular tins of marijuana. He was subsequently charged with two felony counts for manufacturing, delivery or possession with intent to distribute drugs, as well as misdemeanors for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. For those charges, he’s currently out on $25,000 bond. Source
  11. Last night Tame Impala was announced as one of Coachella’s 2019 headliners. If you were wondering whether that means new music is on the way, the answer is yes. In an Instagram post, Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker wrote, “New year. New shows. New sounds.” In an interview last year, Parker expressed his desire to release a new album by Summer 2019, adding that he’d be “very disappointed” if he failed to meet that goal. Parker also said he isn’t a fan of debuting new material live, which suggests a new record should arrive before the band’s Coachella appearance in April. “I like that the first time people hear it is the kind of the recorded glory … like the premeditated thing that I’ve spent two years on, rather than being half drunk bashing it out on stage, hitting clanger notes,” Parker explained. Currents, Parker’s most recent album as Tame Impala, was released in 2015. Along with Coachella, Tame Impala is confirmed to appear at Shaky Knees in Atlanta and several European festivals next summer. You can find the as-yet-confirmed list of shows below. Parker recently collaborated with rapper Theophilus London for new music under the moniker Theo Impala. In November, he lost some of his gear after the home he was staying at in Malibu burned down in the California wildfires. Tame Impala 2019 Tour Dates: 04/13 – Indio, CA @ Coachella Music Festival 04/20 – Indio, CA @ Coachella Music Festival 05/03-05 – Atlanta, GA @ Shaky Knees Festival 05/31 – Barcelona, ES @ Primavera Sound 06/21-23 – Scheeßel, DE @ Hurricane Festival 06/21-23 – Tuttlingen, DE @ Southside Festival 08/09-11 – Helsinki, FI @ Flow Festival Source
  12. Lords of Chaos, the new non-fiction horror-thriller from Grammy-winning music video director Jonas Åkerlund, tells the story of controversial Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. Following a premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, the project is scheduled for a wider release next month, and is being previewed with a new trailer. Today’s teaser clip offers an early look at Mayhem and Burzum, two bands considered to be pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene of the ’90s. Specifically, we are introduced to Euronymous (played by Rory Culkin), the Mayhem founder and self-proclaimed Satanist who would later on be killed by Burzum leader Varg Vikernes (Emory Cohen). Sky Ferreira also stars as Anne-Marit, photographer and girlfriend of Euronymous. Watch below. Lords of Chaos is based on the 1998 non-fiction book of the same name, penned by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind. The movie will hit theaters on February 8th. Source
  13. Coachella has revealed its 2019 lineup. America’s preeminent music festival returns for its 20th edition on April 12th-14th and April 19th-21st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Other notable acts include Solange, Janelle Monáe, Aphex Twin, Billie Eilish, The 1975, Anderson .Paak, Kacey Musgraves, Kid Cudi, Weezer, CHVRCHES, Gesaffelstein, Christine and the Queens, Mac DeMarco, Maggie Rogers, Blood Orange, Jaden Smith, and more. Also playing are Kaytranda, Pusha-T, Jon Hopkins, Lizzo, Four Tet, King Princess, Juice WRLD, Charlotte Gainsboug, SOPHIE, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Playboi Carti, YG, Khalid, Zedd, and 070 Shake. As previously reported, Kanye West was in line to headline, but dropped out following a dispute over his stage setup. Festival organizers tapped Grande in his place. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 4th at 11:00 a.m. PST. Source
  14. The titan appears again: Coachella has dropped yet another insane lineup. The iconic music festival returns in 2019 with a lineup full of huge names, rare gets and electronic music aplenty. Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande will headline the festival, which celebrates its 20th year in 2019. As usual, the lineup includes a who’s who of electronic offerings, most notably a rare set from Aphex Twin. Enigmatic posters hinted at the legendary artist making an appearance, but it’s amazing to see him on the final poster. Other electronic acts include Kayzo, Zedd, Jon Hopkins, Gesaffelstein, RÜFÜS DU SOL, DJ Snake, Kaytranada and more. Artists like Billie Eilish, Solange, the 1975, J Balvin and CHVRCHES round out the top lines. The lineup accompanies ticket sale info. Tickets go back on sale this Friday, January 4, for both weekends. Expect quick sellouts as usual; if you want to go, we highly suggest copping your tickets on Friday. Coachella’s lineup drop officially kicks off festival season (sorry, Ultra). Expect lineups from Governor’s Ball, Boston Calling, Bonnaroo, Movement and more to come over the next few weeks. 15. This headline could essentially be written to say: “Major corporation urges people to use common sense and not kill themselves for memes”. It feels somewhat ridiculous to say, but that’s the world we’re living in. Bird Box has been a surprising smash hit for Netflix, I say surprising because I don’t know anyone that was blown away by the film but the way people (Netflix’s marketing team) are carrying on about it online, you would have thought Drake’s child’s birthing video had leaked or something. Bird Box follows a family in a world where if you see the monster, you die. Sounds eerily familiar to A Quiet Place right? Well it’s already been viewed a whopping 45 million times and is on track to be one of the biggest Netflix movies ever. As always, when something achieves such a status of cultural relevance in this day and age, it leads to it being mercilessly memed and mocked. The latest Bird Box challenge sees people trying to go about their day while blind folded, some going as far to drive around completely blind. Which has led to Netflix issuing a statement on the trend, namely calling people out for being absolute fucking numpties and endangering other people. Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes. — Netflix US (@netflix) January 2, 2019 “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. 16. NGHTMRE and Dillon Francis is one of our all-time favorite collaborative duos. After their first hit “Need You,” they got back into the studio and made “Another Dimension.” Now, the two are back in the studio for a third collaboration. “Studio day w/ Dillon Francis,” NGHTMRE writes in a caption on Instagram. No telling yet what this could end up sounding like, since “Need You” and “Another Dimension” were already so far apart in sound. But no matter what, we’re happy for anything! Also, wherever they’re recording, it looks pretty cold if Dillon is all bundled up in a jacket and beanie… This article was first published on Your EDM. Along with his wife, Cathryn Antoinette “Toni” Tennille, Dragon released a number of memorable singles, including “Love Will Keep Us Together” and “Muskrat Love”. The pair also hosted their own ABC variety series from 1976 to 1977. A classically trained pianist, Dragon served as a backup musician for the Beach Boys during the 1960s before embarking on his own career. Dragon and Tennille were divorced in 2014, though reports say the pair remained close friends. In 2007, after years of accompanying her ex-husband on the road as a back-up singer, Young pursued her own career in music. She released four albums, her most recent being 2016’s Raw, which chronicled her breakup from Young following 36 years of marriage. 21. Whethan delighted fans with the release of Life of a Wallflower Vol. 1 at the end of 2018, including collaborations with HONNE, Oh Wonder, and Broods. The EP also included a collaboration with Bipolar Sunshine called “Top Shelf.” It’s a high-energy and, one might even say spunky tune thanks to the creative use of vocal chopping and the melody that is found within. Today, one of our favorite producers Heroless dropped his remix to the hit which makes use of the best parts of the original while putting his own spin on it. Much of the vocal chops are still intact, but the overall melody and tempo is made a bit slower, a bit more dreamy. The last 30 seconds or so also uses an additional synth in harmony with the lead synth for a fantastic effect. Check it out below! This article was first published on Your EDM. 22. Former president Barack Obama can now add “Billboard-charting artist” to his exemplary CV. Late last month, Obama contributed to “One Last Time (44 Remix)”, the final entry in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton-inspired Hamildrops song series. The reworked track subsequently debuted at No. 22 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart, pulling in 307,000 on-demand streams and 9,000 downloads in its first week. On “One Last Time”, Obama can be heard reciting potions of George Washington’s famed farewell address. The 44th POTUS is accompanied on the track by original Hamilton cast member Christopher Jackson, Grammy-winning gospel artist BeBe Winans, Tony-winning producer/orchestrator Alex Lacamoir, and of course, Miranda. (Read: Why Music Became More Political During Obama’s Administration) As Billboard notes, Obama previously appeared on two of its now-defunct charts: the TV DVD Sales ranking in 2009 (for History: The Inauguration of Barack Obama) and the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists list in 2015 (for a feature on JX Cannon’s “Pop Off”). Revisit “One Last Time (44 Remix)” below. Other Hamildrops installments include submissions from The Decemberists, Nas, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Over the weekend, Obama shared a list of his favorite albums and films of 2018. Source
  23. Word on the street is that despite promising rumors, Kanye West will not be performing at Coachella 2019. Speculation has made him a frontrunner to headline the music festival in Indio, California this Spring. On the verge of a lineup announcement, TMZ just broke the news of the cancellation. Consequence of Sound has separately confirmed this to be true. According to the reports, Yeezy finds the Coachella’s stage to be “artistically limiting.” A insider close to the hip hop star explains, “These 40×60 stages are so archaic. It’s the same type of stage on which Shakespeare’s works were performed hundreds of years ago.” With a slew of new material from Kanye and more expected on the way, this would have been an opportune time to bring his vision to Coachella. However, the staging issue has ultimately caused festival organizer Goldenvoice and the rapper to part ways, at least for now. TMZ says Kanye is “done with performing at festivals” altogether, but we’ll see about that. Childish Gambino remains the only confirmed headliner for Coachella 2019. Keep an eye out for that lineup announce soon. Sources: Consequence of Sound, TMZ | Photo: Kayla Reefer for Suspend Mag This article was first published on Your EDM. 24. Why in God’s name would you wanna keep writing about characters whose central preoccupations are weed and dick and fart jokes? Well, maybe because they’re beloved cult characters and bigger successes than any of your recent works. Either way, Kevin Smith has confirmed he’s returning to his early Hollywood days by reviving the centerpieces of his View Askewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob. The filmmaker has been teasing the bluntly titled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot for a few years now, with the latest update saying the sequel to 2001’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was targeting a 2019 release. While it seems things have taken a little longer than expected to get off the ground (Smith’s recent heart attack might have had something to do with it), Smith has now confirmed that (pre-)pre-production on the project has begun. (Read: Ranking: Kevin Smith From Worst to Best) Smith tweeted an image of himself with longtime producing partner Jordan Monsanto, taken by Jay himself, Jason Mewes, confirming that the team has started the new year by getting right to work. “Spent the first day of 2019 having a #JayAndSilentBobReboot pre-pre-production meeting…” Smith wrote. “Took this pic… to both mark the moment and to document that we were the only dopes in Hollywood working on the holiday.” Spent the first day of 2019 having a #JayAndSilentBobReboot pre-pre-production meeting at our holiday-roomy @WeWork office! @JayMewes took this pic of me and @JordanMonsanto to both mark the moment and to document that we were the only dopes in Hollywood working on the holiday. pic.twitter.com/xTNrpN6OF6 — KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) January 2, 2019 Speaking last year, Smith explained how Jay and Silent Bob Reboot isn’t really a reboot, but instead features a reboot as part of its plot as means to send up Hollywood’s current obsession with reboots and remakes. As he put it, “We’re doing a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and it’s called Jay and Silent Bob Reboot… It’s us, it’s me and Jay so it’s not really strictly a reboot in the way that people think of a reboot. If you remember Jay and Silent Bob Strike Backit was a movie in which Jay and Silent Bob found out Hollywood was making a movie about them so they went cross country to Hollywood to stop that from happening. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is completely fucking different. In Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Jay and Silent Bob find out that Hollywood is making a reboot of that old movie that they had made about them, and they have to go cross the country to Hollywood to stop it all over again. It’s literally the same fucking movie all over again. It’s a movie that makes fun of sequels and remakes and reboots while being all three at the same time.” Jay and Silent Bob made their first appearance in Smith’s cult classic film Clerks, subsequently becoming the connecting thread in the View Askewniverse films like Mallrats, Dogma, and Chasing Amy. More recently, Smith has focused on his True North Trilogy, which began with 2014’s Tusk and continued with 2016’s Yoga Hosers. The third entry, Moose Jaws, is expected in 2020, and may connect the films to the Askewniverse with an appearance by Jay and Silent Bob. Source
  25. Is it possible for something to go viral and not spawn an idiotic challenge? Apparently not, as proven by viewers of Netflix’s popular new horror film, Bird Box. Directed by Susanne Bier, the movie follows a blindfolded family — a woman (Sandra Bullock) and two children — as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world where one’s sense of sight can actually get you killed. And because we just can’t let things be, naturally it has led to the #BirdBoxChallenge, which finds everyday people blindfolding themselves and attempting many of the harrowing missions from the fictional (!) film. Indeed, there are actually folks out there trying walk about and drive their cars around with covered eyes. Netflix has caught wind of the trending challenge and promptly issued a statement advising against it, because uhh, duh, it’s dangerous as heck: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.” We can’t believe Netflix had to release such an advisory either, but then again we did see Drake fans get into all kinds of car accidents in the name of the #InMyFeelingsChallenge. Sigh. Revisit a trailer for Bird Box below, followed by a couple of (safe) memes about it. There’s also the safe option of simply listening to the film’s score, which was helmed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. — Netflix US (@netflix) January 2, 2019 Source
