  1. A new year, new sounds from Future. The ever-prolific Atlanta rapper has unveiled a brand new single called “Crushed Up”, produced by Wheezy. It’s accompanied by a cinematic video set in a snowy mansion, which you can watch below. By Future’s own standards, 2018 was rather light in terms of his musical output. He dropped a pair of collaborative mixtapes, Beast Mode 2 with Zaytoven and Wrld on Drugs with JUICE WRLD, plus he curated the soundtrack to Superfly. By the look of it, a new studio album is finally on the way, which would mark the proper follow-up to his double dose of 2017 LPs, Future and Hndrxx. Source
  2. John Legend was the only other musical artist to participate in Lifetime’s new R. Kelly docu-series, Surviving R. Kelly. According to filmmaker and executive producer dream hampton, she had reached out to many of Kelly’s other contemporaries, including Mary J. Blige, Lil’ Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle, Lady Gaga, and JAY-Z, but all of them passed on the opportunity. “I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it,” hampton explained. But Legend was willing to touch it, and he’s earned much appreciation for doing so. However, as Legend explains, it wasn’t a touch decision: “To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn’t feel risky at all. I believe these women and don’t give a fuck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.” To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all. I believe these women and don't give a fuck about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision. — John Legend (@johnlegend) January 4, 2019 Legend also encouraged his Twitter followers “to support the work of people like my friends at @ALongWalkHome who have been speaking out on behalf of the survivors for a long time.” Questlove was another name mentioned by hampton as having opted against appearing in the docu-series. However, The Roots drummer said his decision had nothing to do with his opinion of Kelly. “I always thought Kels was trash,” Questlove wrote in a since-deleted tweet. “My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius’. I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him.” The first episode of the docu-series premiered on Lifetime on Thursday night and chronicles the numerous allegations of sexual assault and pedophilia alleged against the singer. Despite threats of a lawsuit from Kelly, the three-night event will continue at the same time on Friday, January 4th and Saturday, January 5th, with each night featuring a two one-hour episodes. 3. AEG chairman Philip Anschutz, who oversees Goldenvoice, the organization that produces Coachella, Panorama, FYF, and many other prominent festivals, has drawn ire over the last several years when it was revealed his private family foundation was pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into groups that promoted LGBTQ discrimination, climate denial, and other right-wing causes that clash with the liberal ideals of many of Goldenvoice’s participating artists. Though his lawyers said he stopped contributing to such organizations in 2015, subsequent donations proved that wasn’t actually the case. Anschutz appeared to partake in a bit of damage control last year by donating $1 million to the Elton John AIDS Foundation LGBT fund. “My gift to the Elton John Foundation is intended to emphasize that we support freedom of all people to live their lives peacefully, without interference from others,” Anschutz said at the time. “Sexuality is among the most personal of issues, and it has never been my intent to weigh in on people’s private lives. I support the rights of all people and oppose discrimination and intolerance against the LGBTQ community.” On the heels of Coachella’s 2019 lineup announcement, Spin took a peek at Anschutz’s 2018 list of donations via Open Secrets and found that he’s still doing his best to financially boost Republican organizations. What’s different, however, is that, aside from Orrin Hatch and Paul Ryan (both of whom returned his donations when it was revealed they would not seek re-election in last fall’s midterms), Anschutz is no longer donating to individual politicians or organizations that wear their bigotry on their sleeve. Instead, his donations have gone to individual GOP state party organizations and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, to whom he funneled $134,400. So, while he’s still donating to people in the business of disenfranchising minorities, he’s not boosting organizations that openly describe homosexuality as a “Satanic perversion,” like he used to. 4. Some incredible artists for Beyond Wonderland SoCal have been announced by playing cards being passed around at Countdown NYE last weekend. These initial artists couldn’t get any better, and we can’t wait to see who else is set to arrive. The artists that were mysteriously released to perform by the Beyond Wonderland Card game were Armin Van Buuren, Seven Lions, Rezz, Flux Pavilion, YehMe2, Lil Texas, Deorro, Audiofreq, and Rusko. This is one of the more clever ways that Insomniac has released a lineup. Unlike other announcements, those that collect the cards can win prizes like EDC Las Vegas tickets, merch, and opportunities at Beyond SoCal as well. Check back here for the latest updates as details about tickets, artists, and other news about the event will be surfacing shortly. Click here for more details on the playing cards. 5. For the past eight years that YouTube has been exclusively live streaming Coachella, only one weekend has been featured. Now entering its ninth year, for the first time, YouTube will live stream both weekends of Coachella. It won’t be the exact same experience, however, as it will offer a “curated live experience” featuring performances, artist vignettes and behind-the-scenes looks at Coachella, according to Variety. In addition to the new weekend of streaming, it’s been announced that YouTube will also be the exclusive playlist partner for the festival, much to the dismay of Spotify purists. This will include “playlist integration on the Coachella site and festival app and in YouTube Music.” YouTube announced a three-year renewal of its contract with Coachella in 2018. Coachella 2019 will take place April 12-14 and again on April 19-21. See the lineup here. H/T Variety This article was first published on Your EDM. 6. Pop culture in the internet age moves pretty fast sometimes. If you don’t slow down and enjoy it every once in a while, you might miss it. Even as another year’s award season brings with it renewed debates about what purpose awards shows serve in the era of democratized entertainment, we’re moved to read about and watch alike as celebrities receive statues and we, as the viewer, somehow feel that a celebrated cause of our own is being honored. It’s a little silly, sure, but it’s still a fun and relatively harmless way for audiences to step back and take stock of some of their favorite movies and TV shows, while also arguing with others about their own favorites. (We say “relatively” harmless, because Suicide Squad has an Oscar thanks to this whole process. People don’t forget. We didn’t.) This Sunday, January 6th, the 76th Annual Golden Globes goes down, giving celebrities another excuse to get drunk as they accept their statues while also giving audiences a reason to get drunk as they heckle the ceremony’s skits. In what proved to be a phenomenal year for both art forms, the races are as hard to call as they’ve ever been. But fear not: We’ve assembled a primer that you can consider for your predictions and/or soft wagering at parties. (Of course, we also couldn’t help but slip in our own personal picks as well.) Keep these in mind come Sunday, and feel free to join us online as we offer up-to-date coverage throughout the evening. If anything, it’ll give you an opportunity to laugh at any we got wrong … and silently applaud those we got right. __________________________________________________________ Best Animated Feature Film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony) Incredibles 2 Isle of Dogs Mirai Ralph Breaks the Internet Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse What Should Win: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse What Will Win: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Anybody who’s been paying attention to the awards season race so far will notice that these five nominees read like a list of usual suspects in the Animation category. After all, it wasn’t exactly a breakout year otherwise, and even some of the films present would draw a contention or two from various members of our film staff. But without belaboring the point any further, we’ll just say that Into the Spider-Verse is going to win, and deservedly so. It’s likely going to keep winning all the way to, if there’s any justice, the Oscars. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Best Foreign Language Film Roma (Netflix) Capernaum Girl Never Look Away Roma Shoplifters What Should Win: Roma What Will Win: Roma It’s been an all-around great year in this category, to the point where if there weren’t a monolith in the midst, we’d have a hard time calling it for 2019. But Roma has become an arthouse phenomenon in the weeks since its Netflix rollout, a must-see revival of the kind of personal, sweeping filmmaking that populated some of film’s best eras. It’s one of Consequence’s favorite films of last year, but then, so is Shoplifters. Hell, even Capernaum and Never Look Away drew individual year-end votes. There are a lot of great movies coming out from all around the world, if you’re able to find them. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Best Screenplay, Motion Picture The Favourite (Fox Searchlight) The Favourite, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara Vice, Adam McKay Green Book, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga and Brian Hayes Currie If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins Roma, Alfonso Cuarón What Should Win: If Beale Street Could Talk What Will Win: The Favourite Even if they’ll be split up come Oscars time, you can bet that all of the films nominated by the Globes in the Screenplay category will be up for the top prizes in late February as well. The honor we’d most love to see would be one for Barry Jenkins, who managed the remarkable feat of capturing and translating James Baldwin’s unmistakable command of tone to the screen. No small feat, there. But we’ll hardly be upset if, and likely when, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara take the prize for their searingly funny work on The Favourite. It’s a real fav … never mind. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Best Original Score, Motion Picture Black Panther (Marvel) Alexandre Desplat, Isle of Dogs Marc Shaiman, Mary Poppins Returns Ludwig Göransson, Black Panther Justin Hurwitz, First Man Marco Beltrami, A Quiet Place Who Should Win: Justin Hurwitz Who Will Win: Ludwig Göransson Score is a tough category this year, at least for the Golden Globes, because there really isn’t an obvious frontrunner. Also, there are several notable composers missing. Where is Beale Street‘s Nicholas Britell? Or BlackKklansman‘s Terence Blanchard? So, judging from this crop, especially with the curious inclusion of Marco Beltrami, it’s probably going to come down to name recognition alone. That gives Desplat and Hurwitz, two darlings of the awards circuit, a favorable edge, but then you have to remember that Black Panther is the big blockbuster of the bunch. With that in mind, we’re going to gamble and say this one goes to Wakanda, but we would be equally stoked if Hurwitz’s dreamy atmospheres won, too. —Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture Green Book (Universal) Mahershala Ali – Green Book Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me? Timothee Chalamet – Beautiful Boy Sam Rockwell – Vice Adam Driver – BlacKkKlansman Who Should Win: Adam Driver Who Will Win: Mahershala Ali Wanna know how you can tell the Globes go by names? Sam Rockwell’s inclusion over his on-screen colleague Steve Carell. The former sticks out in Adam McKay’s political farce like a sore thumb, while the latter gives the weighty supporting performance. Grievances aside, that helps us pare down the nominees in this selection to one name: Mahershala Ali. Not only is he a recent awards champ for Moonlight, but he also has been at the forefront of the outstanding hype for the not-so-outstanding Green Book. The dark horse is Adam Driver, who steals every scene in Spike Lee’s historical drama, and if he manages to come out ahead of everyone, we’ll drop our wine come Sunday night. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture If Beale Street Could Talk (Annapurna Pictures) Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk Amy Adams, Vice Rachel Weisz, The Favourite Emma Stone, The Favourite Claire Foy, First Man Who Should Win: Regina King Who Will Win: Regina King The strange ongoing debate about where exactly The Favourite‘s leading trio belongs in terms of awards categorization continues, but in the meantime, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone (who both have leading screen time, seriously, why is this a thing) will have to avoid splitting the category for their excellent work. Claire Foy garners the only top-category nomination for the otherwise slept-on First Man, alongside Amy Adams for her quietly eerie work as Lynne Cheney. For our money, though, the top winner at so many ceremonies up to this point will continue onward here. Regina King has been doing outstanding work for decades, and we hope she’ll continue to be recognized for one of her most felt performances yet. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Source
  7. EDM gives you telepathy. Sharing equal love for a song or artist with another soul allows you a valuable form of communication that cannot be obtained by anything other than the music. When the song you two have been waiting for is played by the DJ, no words between you are required. Just a simple glance & smile as you’re both launched into an abyss of euphoria that will carry you through the next few stages of your life until the next song takes hold of you & you experience it live. This motivation to live is priceless, and can only be lapped up at the electronic watering hole, a place we all come back to to quench our unending thirst. If I could bottle up this feeling, I would give a sip to everyone I love so that they could understand. A stigma has creeped its way into our environment & has settled over us like a dense cloud. But we know that if only the outsiders had a taste, if only they closed their eyes, tilted their heads back & allowed the masterpiece to overtake them, that they would understand. Until then, they dehydrate in the desert of life, unable to make the connection, unable to reach the watering hole, settling for mirages in the distance. Listen to your loved ones when they tell you their favorite songs & artists. Stand tall in front of that stage, with or without them near you. When their song comes on, I ask you to let go of your own mind, and adopt theirs. I ask you to just “be”, be your loved one in that moment & listen to the song through their ears, embodying their joy. Soak it in & start radiating love & appreciation for that person, their love for the music, & the music itself. It’s even better when that person is right next to you listening too, as the telepathic connection is complete in that moment, and nothing else requires your attention. “I love you” is overused and outdated. Send your friend, lover, sister or brother a song. Allow that melody to enter their ears with the knowledge that you provided it, forming an alliance that reaches its final form when you’re both in front of the stage & that song comes on. When your entire body loses itself & surrenders. Together. If somebody sends you a song, take it seriously. This means that when they listened to the beat, your soul entered their thoughts, and the act of sharing this song with you is the greatest forms of flattery. They want you to be well. They want you to live to see another day. Featured photo by: Jonas Hojgaar The post EDM Is A Feeling, And There’s Nothing Quite Like It appeared first on EDM Maniac. Source
  8. Fans like to point to Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites, Bangarang, or Recess as some of the greatest collections of Skrillex music, but one of the least mentioned and most underappreciated is his Leaving EP from 2013. It offered a more experimental (at the time) side of Skrillex that a lot of fans hadn’t been exposed to, and it persists as one of our favorite EPs in his discography. With only three songs, it’s not a particularly long listen, but it’s eye-opening. Leaving was released right around the end of the electro-house era and toward the peak of brostep, also around the time that trap was beginning to really rear its head. To that end, each of the tracks incorporates a blend of sounds, styles, and genres without ever pigeon-holing themselves too hard. “The Reason” is impeccably hard to pin down with its off-kilter drum beat and melody, at times leaning toward house, possibly trap, maybe even the beginnings of future bass. The bridge is definitely more electro than anything else, but as quickly as it appears, it flows seamlessly into that beautiful melodic outro. “Scary Bolly Dub” is the closest to brostep on the EP, obviously working off of “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites,” but with a distinct twist. Both the “bolly” and “dub” part of the title work overtime to make this an Indian-leaning, dub-focused work of art. The final track, “Leaving,” is probably the most left field of the bunch. With a blend of garage, downtempo, and ambient with an ethereal vocal from Skrillex, pitched down and warped, this was the first tune to really show off Skrillex’s production prowess outside of high energy productions. Yes, “With You Friends” and “All I Ask Of You” could be grouped in, as well, but neither accomplish what “Leaving” does. With a Skrillex album expected in 2019 (though we say this every year), we look back to 2013 and celebrate the 6th anniversary of this classic. Listen again below. 9. Ed Sheeran is heading to court over allegations he lifted parts of Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On” for his own song “Thinking Out Loud”. According to Reuters, a U.S. judge has rejected Sheeran’s request to dismiss the lawsuit brought against him by the estate and heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote “Let’s Get It On” with Gaye. Judge Louis Stanton said he found “substantial similarities between several of the two works’ musical elements,” including their bass lines and percussion.” Judge Stanton also pointed to performance footage of Sheeran “seamlessly transitioning between [the songs]” as further reason for why the originality of “Thinking Out Loud” is in question. The case will now go before a jury who must decide whether the harmonic rhythm of “Let’s Get It On” is too common to deserve copyright protection and, if not, whether Sheeran violated its copyright. Compare the two songs for yourself below: Sheeran is also facing a second lawsuit filed by Structured Asset Sales LLC, which owns one-third of Townsend’s estate. They too are accusing the singer of infringing on “Let’s Get It On” and are seeking $100 million in damages. Sheeran was previously named in similar copyright lawsuits over his songs “Photograph” and “Shape Of You”. Last month, a U.S. District judge upheld a ruling ordering Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams to pay $5 million to Gaye’s estate after it was determined their song “Blurred Lines” infringed the copyright of Gaye’s “Got to Give it Up”. 10. Yesterday, Goldenvoice announced the lineup for the 20th anniversary of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. This year’s edition will feature headlining sets from Childish Gambino, Tame Impala and Ariana Grande. Kanye West was originally slated for a headlining set, but pulled out at the last minute due to disagreements over his production limits. On the dance music front, the lineup is looking stronger than it has in years. After cryptic hints in the form of posters around L.A., the legendary Aphex Twin has been confirmed. The Yuma features several valkyries of techno including Nina Kraviz, Nicole Moudaber, Amelie Lens and Charlotte De Witte. Gesaffelstein will return to the desert for the first time since 2015, where he played his only live set of his entire tour that year. Not to mention a series of EDM stalwarts including DJ Snake, Dillon Francis and Diplo, the last of whom hinted strongly at an appearance in the Do LaB over the course of the festival. Over the past 20 years this event has come to define music festivals in America, and even the world. Being just a short jaunt away from the music hub that is Los Angeles, Coachella has garnered a reputation for huge surprises and pushing boundaries. Looking back through two decades, this festival has included moments that shook the foundation of modern popular culture. In 2006 Daft Punk debuted their infamous pyramid stage in the dance tent, and rumors of their return have not ceased since. Coachella 2007 saw the reunion of the defunct Los Angeles outfit, Rage Against The Machine. In 2012 Tupac was revived if only for a moment during Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s headlining performance. Finally, last year in 2018 Beyonce delivered what has widely been received as the best performance in Coachella history, partly because she was joined on stage by her Destiny’s Child cohorts. What surprises does Goldenvoice have in store for Coachella’s 20th year? You’ll just have to find out in April. Tickets for Coachella 2019 go on sale Friday, January 4 at 11am PST. Grab them HERE. 11. Skrillex’s Bangarang EP just celebrated a seventh birthday last month. Seven tracks made up the classic, including the collaboration with Wolfgang Gartner, “Devil’s Den.” The original made the most of both Skrillex’s and Wolfgang’s signature sounds, resulting in a dubstep/electro hybrid that is still hard to match to this day. But times change, and so do trends. As midtempo becomes the hot new genre, newcomer LICK has taken it upon himself to rework the classic for a more modern crowd. It’s nastier, darker, and not as dance-floor-high-energy as the original, but far more suited to the new headbanger contingent. Nothing will ever compare to the original “Devil’s Den,” but LICK isn’t out to make comparisons anyway. He’s forging his own path and this is as damn good as anything else. Check it out below. 12. With over 200 artists on Coachella’s 2019 lineup — plus Heineken House and Do Lab lineups still to come — there’s a lot of information to comb through. However, two of the names that have people talking the most recently are Idris Elba and Virgil Abloh, both making their Coachella debuts this year. Both Elba and Abloh will play on Saturday; Elba could potentially play Yuma or Mojave, while Abloh is more likely destined for Gobi or Mojave, possibly even Sahara since it’s been pushing more hip hop in recent years. Though Virgil is getting more recognition recently for his fashion, his history in music is well documented. Elba, on the other hand, seems to be getting the brunt of the “Why is he on the lineup?” brigade. Billboard shared this compendium of Elba’s history in music, but all you need to know is he’s been DJing for longer than he’s been acting. He launched his own record label in 2018, he even played Tomorrowland in 2018. Passes go on sale Friday at 11am PT. 13. It appears Coachella will play host to the debut of a new collaboration featuring Gucci Mane, Lil Pump, and Smokepurpp. The trio will apparently perform under the name “Gucci Gang”, which is also the title of Lil Pump’s 2017 chart-topping single. There had been some mystery surrounding the identity of Gucci Gang following last night’s lineup announcement. A photo Gucci Mane was displayed on Gucci Gang’s artist page, leading some fans to speculate whether it was simply a typo. Now, though, the artist page has been updated to include images of all three rappers. Gucci Gang is just one of many highlights found on Coachella’s 2019 lineup. Other notable acts include Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Aphex Twin, Solange, Janelle Monáe, Billie Eilish, The 1975, and Kid Cudi, among others. Tickets go on sale Friday, January 4th at 11:00 a.m. PST via Coachella’s website. They tend to sell out quickly, so you might also want to try your luck on the secondary market. Meanwhile, Lil Pump is set to release a new solo single called “Butterfly Doors” later tonight. Source
  14. Bring Me the Horizon‘s sound has changed drastically from their deathcore roots, as evidenced by their pop-leaning new single, “Medicine”, which the band released today along with a visually stunning music video. With the release of their sixth album, amo, just a few weeks away, “Medicine” marks the third song unleashed from the UK act’s upcoming disc, following “Mantra”, which recently received a Grammy nomination, and “Wonderful Life”. The video is an effects-laden clip, courtesy of animator Extraweg and art director Oliver Latta, that shows a statue-like bust of singer Oli Sykes’ head as it is engorged by a plague of demon-like representations of himself (watch below). [See Also: BMTH’s “Mantra” on the Top 30 Metal + Hard Rock Songs of 2018] The new album was originally slated to be released on January 11th, but has been pushed to January 25th. Bring Me the Horizon will embark on a North American tour starting January 23rd in Nashville, Tennessee, and running through February 16th in Las Vegas, Nevada. They’ll also return to the States to play the Epicenter, Welcome to Rockville, and Sonic Temple festivals in May. Source
  15. New at No. 22 on this week’s Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart is… Barack Obama? Our 44th president appeared alongside Christopher Jackson and gospel singer BeBe Winans, on the remixed version of “Hamilton” showstopper “One Last Time.” In the song, Obama recites a passage from George Washington’s 1796 farewell address. As far as we can tell, Obama is the only president, past or present, who has been on the Billboard Charts. And funny enough, this isn’t even his first time. According to Billboard, “Obama previously appeared on two now-defunct Billboard charts. A Moment in History: The Inauguration of Barack Obama hit No. 6 on the TV DVD Sales tally in March 2009, while a song, “Pop Off,” by JX Cannon featuring Obama, reached No. 10 on Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists in December 2015.” Listen to “One Last Time” (44 Remix) below. 16. Between Spotify, Billboard, and other streaming services, there are a lot of platforms that offer objective looks into “top songs” of 2018. While subjective opinions are a dime a dozen, there’s just no arguing with facts like streaming numbers and sales. Official Charts, one of the most trusted barometers of UK charts for more than 60 years, has just put out their own list of biggest singles of 2018. These results mirror a lot of the same tracks as found on most-streamed lists from Spotify and Apple Music, but there are some notable differences. Drake’s “God’s Plan” and Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” both appear in the top 10, as we’d expect. Aside from that, the rest of the tracks in the top 10 are pretty different. Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa take the top spot with “One Kiss,” while the less globally-popular George Ezra sits right under Drake with “Shotgun.” View the Official Top 100 Biggest Singles of 2018 in full here. Today, the Austin garage rockers are offering fans a preview of what’s to come in the form of a new single called “Level”. A three-minute beast, the track sees Kevin McKeown and Eric Owen dishing the same brash and brazen sound that made records like 2017’s Dead Beat Graffiti and 2016’s Don’t Wake the Riot stand out at music festivals across the US. “You’ve got a secret/ Ooh ooh no, I couldn’t keep it,” McKeown proudly sings, swagger dripping off his lips while a guitar screams in the background. 18. It’s 2019, and somehow R. Kelly has still managed to fight his way through the #TimesUp, #MeToo, and #MuteRKelly movements. On Thursday, the numerous women who have accused the R&B singer of sexual abuse and pedophilia (and more) gain another powerful weapon in their arsenal of proof when Lifetime airs part one of the explosive docuseries Surviving R. Kelly. The six-part series features interviews with a number of Kelly’s alleged victims — included ex-wife Andrea Kelly — as well as members #MeToo founder Tarana Burke, R&B singer Sparkle, Kelly’s family, and members of Kelly’s inner circle. Each one sheds light on the intricate systems of rules and accomplices that have allowed Kelly to get away with his alleged misconduct for decades. However, even with all these individuals stepping forward, some big name collaborators and friends — and even some who had taken shots at Kelly publicly before — refused to speak on camera for the documentary. As filmmaker and executive producer dream hampton told Shadow and Act, John Legend was the only artist who agreed to take part in the exposé. “I asked JAY-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil’ Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle…” hampton said, while adding Lady Gaga to the list of rejections in a separate interview with Detroit Free Press. “I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it. I remember Ahmir [“Questlove” Thompson] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.” Even without the support of powerful celebrities, it’s clear Kelly is still feeling the pressure from the docuseries. TMZ reports that Kelly’s lawyer, Brian Nix, sent a letter to Lifetime threatening a lawsuit if the network airs Surviving R. Kelly as planned. Kelly and his legal team argue that the accusers are making false allegations to obtain fame and financial gain. Nix’s letter also claims that Kelly is in possession of two pieces of audio totaling five minutes long that show Lifetime knew “some of the girls are lying, but that the budget was too high to turn back now.” (Of course, Kelly previously responded to the allegations with his 19-minute confessional “I Admit It”.) Nix says the lawsuit will be filed on Thursday when Lifetime first broadcasts the docuseries at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m CT. Update 1:30 p.m. CT: Lifetime has responded to the legal threat, defiantly stating that Surviving R. Kelly will air as intended. “Lifetime has always been a brand that champions women’s stories,” a network rep told TMZ. The three-night event will continue at the same time on Friday, January 4th and Saturday, January 5th, with each night featuring a two one-hour episodes. Watch a preview below. Update: A new clip from Surviving R. Kelly has been shared via Rolling Stone. The clip finds Lisa Van Allen, who became one of the first women to speak out against Kelly in 2008, explaining her years under Kelly’s manipulation and control. She details the “runners” who worked at Kelly’s studio, how he’d block conversations from her mother, and demanded she not speak to anyone but him. Van Allen also detailed how Kelly controlled her sex life, including filming their interactions, forcing her into threesomes, and requiring her to call him “Daddy” both in and out of the bedroom. “He would say things like ‘If you love me, you won’t try to change me. If you love me, you’d accept me how I am. If you love me, you’ll do these things for me,'” Van Allen says in the clip. “Those would be his little pep talks he’d give me.” Take a look below. Source
  19. Fisher is clearly on top of the world. A viral hit, a Grammy nomination, and now a third-line Coachella billing have made the last few months absolutely golden. But on a personal note, it’s hard to beat becoming engaged to the love of your life. Yesterday, Fisher posted a video proposing to his girlfriend in literally the most Fisher way imaginable. On a boat in the middle of the ocean as his girlfriend Chloe Chapman lounges sun bathing, he sits down beside her and opens the ring box and asks: “Whaddya reckon’?” Of course Chloe excitedly jumps up and kisses Fisher, accepting the proposal. 21. The holiday season brought with it reunions galore, with everyone from Atoms for Peace to the kids from School of Rock to the cast of Reno 911! reconvening for nostalgia’s sake. Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden had the same idea, as the band’s original lineup recently got together for the first time in over 40 (!) years. Last Saturday, December 30th, the earliest known iteration of Iron Maiden met up to reminisce about old memories as well as make new ones, as MetalSucks points out. The gathering consisted of bassist Steve Harris, frontman Paul Mario Day, and guitarists Dave Sullivan and Terry Rance. Original drummer Ron “Rebel” Matthews was absent. As Day noted on Facebook, the last time this lineup was together was way, way back in 1976. (Read: The 20 Worst Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Snubs) “The gang almost all together since 1976, or there abouts.” Day wrote. “I cannot begin to tell you how good it feels. Tonight will burned in my memory for life.” Check out the heartwarming reunion below. Of the four musicians in attendance, only Harris went on to continue with Iron Maiden. He and the rest of the group are still going strong and will embark on a massive North American tour this summer, which they’ve described as their “biggest production ever.” Tickets can be purchased here. 22. The Pitch: Six mysterious strangers from all walks of life receive the same gift from somebody close to them: a puzzle box, which once solved, reveals an offer. For $10,000, all each has to do is survive a series of cutting-edge escape rooms. Nobody involved seems to have too many questions at all on this point, so they soon meet in a concrete high-rise deep within Chicago to play. As the very first room makes clear, however, this is more than just a game, and soon each person has to use their unique skills (and past secrets) to help the group and survive the Escape Room. Wicked Game: “Escape rooms, but you can actually die” is the kind of oh-duh elevator pitch that was going to end up yielding a horror movie sooner or later, and here we sit. As its gimmicky premise goes, Escape Room has an uphill battle to negotiate. Its PG-13 rating means that its terrors have to skew more intellectual than grisly, but director Adam Robitel (Insidious: The Last Key) still pushes the rating about as far as it can go. Drownings, electrocutions, and other ugly fates await the “players”, and there’s a sense of lurid unpleasantness that hangs heavy over the movie as a result. Yet on the other hand, because the foundation of any escape room setup is puzzle-solving, Robitel also has to enliven a horror movie that’s predicated on watching people solve dangerous puzzles. He finds some ingenious ways to play this out (a cavernous bar flipped upside down, with a Goonies-style falling floor, is particularly memorable), but after a while, Escape Room struggles to find its way around its own premise. By design, a substantial amount of the movie involves walking the characters and audience through new scenarios before something dangerous starts happening again, and it creates a dulling pattern that sucks most of the intrigue out of the movie before long. The body count feels less frightening than obligatory, and since there’s little risk of the puzzles going unsolved, Escape Room begins to feel a lot like watching someone else partake in that particular activity. It’s about as exciting as that sounds. Cannon Fodder: Given the film’s straightforward premise, Escape Room moves with a similar sense of narrow efficiency when it comes to its targe…main characters. Each gets an origin story, which ultimately plays into the maze in some way, and you can virtually feel the movie checking off boxes as you watch. Amanda (Deborah Ann Woll) is a literally and figuratively scarred military veteran. Zoey (Taylor Russell) is a bright but anxiety-wracked college student struggling to cope with trauma of her own. Ben (Logan Miller) is a hard-drinking stock clerk, Mike (Tyler Labine) an affable dad type Jason (Jay Ellis) a rude power broker. Danny (Nik Dodani) is an escape room enthusiast, just here to enjoy the game. Each is given a type (cocky, frightened, steely, etc.) and a unique set of skills, so to speak, and that’s about that for the storytelling until it’s time for a dramatic flashback or five. The actors do what they can with the thin material, and as casts of future dead people go, this is an above-average group in terms of engagement. But Escape Room races through its progressions with little regard for mood, the movie assuming that the audience will be every bit as invested in solving its puzzles as those involved. Without any real investment in the characters, though, this is just a horror movie featuring a well-above-average amount of standing and waiting. The Verdict: A lot about Escape Room is, for lack of more eloquent phrasing, odd. It’s odd in its very premise, as discussed. It’s odd in the way that its other standout setpiece, a cluttered library collapsing in like a trash compactor, is burned asynchronously as a cold open, when it’s the exact kind of scene the film’s rushed final act could have used. It’s odd in that its late revelations feel less like anything fitting the movie up to that point than an attempt to shock the audience with any kind of reveal at all. It’s just odd. It’s also not all that good, even if it’s hardly the kind of “bad” that most would get riled about. Escape Room is cut from one of Hollywood’s most familiar cloths: the “mall horror” movie. High on concept, low on innovation, palatable enough for wide audiences to kill an evening. It lacks the kitschy thrills that set some of the better entries in that canon apart, and aside from them, there’s precious little else going on. If anything, it’s just a pretty poor advertisement for escape rooms at large. Where’s It Playing? As the first wide release of 2019, starting January 4th. Trailer: Source
  23. BBC America has confirmed April 7th for the premiere of Killing Eve’s second season. The Emmy-nominated series stars Jodie Comer as a trained assassin and Sandra Oh as a low-level MI-5 operative trying to intercept her. The eight-episode first season received rave reviews across the board, including here at Consequence, where we ranked it as our 3rd favorite TV show of 2018. Killing Eve also earned two Emmy nominations, with Oh becoming the first Asian woman to receive consideration in the category for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Oh’s also up for Best Actress at this weekend’s Golden Globes (which she is also hosting), while Killing Eve is among the finalists for Best Television Series – Drama. 24. Don’t drive under the influence. It’s really that simple. But then again, maybe it’s not, as a man in Ibiza was arrested on New Year’s Eve having tested positive for “every drug [a roadside breathalyzer] can identify.” The report comes from Olive Press, a local publication in Spain. According to the roadside drug test, the 31-year-old man tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, weed, and amphetamines. In fact, the one thing it’s not clear if he tested positive for is alcohol. In addition to testing positive, he was also found to be in possession of another 26 pills, more cocaine, and “some kind of brown substance.” According to the report, the man now “faces a charge for driving under the influence, a $1,134 fine, a six-point penalty on his driver’s license.” [Editor’s note: $1,134? That’s it?] New Year’s Eve is historically one of the most dangerous nights for drivers on the road. Please don’t become another statistic. If you’ve been drinking, have a sober friend drive or call and Uber. H/T Complex This article was first published on Your EDM. 25. Origins is our new music feature in which we ask artists to explain the inspirations behind their latest single. When composers team up with guest singers, all too often their collaborative projects turn out to be one-sided — the vocals receive most, if not all, of the glory. However, that isn’t the case for Dutch composer Rutger Zuydervelt, better known as Machinefabriek. On his forthcoming album, aptly dubbed With Voices, Zuydervelt considers his many singing counterparts as literal instruments, like those of an orchestra. Critical to the patchwork of his cohesive vision, the voices aren’t meant to stand alone and actually shine their brightest when working in tandem with Zuydervelt’s arrangements. One of the talented singers to grace the new album is Marissa Nadler, a singer-songwriter whose vocals are as arresting as the dream folk music she’s been creating since 2000. Nadler appears on “VIII”, the album’s expansive closing track that clocks in at 11 minutes. A simultaneously haunting and mesmerizing number that fittingly caps off Zuydervelt’s musical journey, “VIII” finds the two artists almost “dancing,” their separate talents intertwined yet also building off one another. Zuydervelt’s pairs his minimalist composition — sometimes lullaby-esque, other times alien-like — with Nadler’s airy intonations to paint a dramatic scene. Think of Zuydervelt’s music as a foggy bay, and Nadler’s voice is the hazy beam of light from a nearby lighthouse. Take a listen below. With Voices hits shelves January 18th through Western Vinyl. For more insight into the creation of “VIII” and the album as a whole, Zuydervelt has spoken to Consequence of Sound about some of his major influences, including Polyphonic choir music, a trip to Taipei, and the collaborative works of Marcus Popp and Eriko Toyoda. Becoming: This is a dance piece by choreographer Iván Pérez, for which I did the music (live on stage with the dancers). And this is where it all started for the With Voices album. There’s actually two specific moments that were influential to it… We were in Taipei to rehearse the piece for a few performances there, when Wei-Yun posted a song on her Instagram. Very gentle, Asian singing, I loved it, reminded me of Tenniscoats. So I asked her about it, and she said she sung it herself. It didn’t take too long to come up with the idea for the album after that. So if it wasn’t for Wei-Yun, With Voices wouldn’t exist, and I might’ve never worked with Marissa Nadler. The other important moment was when we were in the rehearsal studio, and Iván asked the dancers to do an exercise; to make a circle together, and slowly move through the space, as one being. They did that for 15 minutes or so, but time seemed to stand still… It was mesmerizing to look at, but it was more than that; you could just feel the intense concentration, and how the dancers connected to each other, not only physically. And I connected with them as well, creating a very minimal, low volume soundtrack for this. It could’ve last forever. It was a strong moment, one that I will never forget, and I think the sense of calm and concentration from that moment comes back in “VIII”, making it the ultimate track to end the album with. “So” — So: I was about to put Björk here, as a major influence. Which would be more than right, but I went for So, a project by Marcus Popp (Oval) and singer Eriko Toyoda. Of course, when this came out in 2003, there was nothing new in combining vocals with electronics, but in this case it was done in such a radical way! Like an ultimate (wo)man/machine symbiosis. Or at times maybe fight against each other? A super intriguing, alienating album. It definitely sparked my interest in working with vocals, and how something that is ‘just beautiful’ can become so much more when juxtaposing it with something more abrasive. Marissa Nadler: This is an obvious one of course. But I did ask Marissa to sing on this track for a reason… I can’t remember what the first album was I heard from her, it might’ve been The Saga of the Mayflower May. It was in a time when folk music was having a sort of resurrection, when Devandra Banhart, Josephine Foster, and Espers were quite popular. For me, Marissa Nadler had the most powerful voice. It is simultaneously angelic as earthly. I don’t think I’ve heard her voice paired with electronics before, but I couldn’t resist giving it a try; asking her to collaborate on this album. Obviously she did, and I’m still thrilled about it. Of all the contributors, she took the most time to actually multi-track her part. It was also the most intimidating to chop up her contributions for the final track. Polyphonic choir music: This sort of goes back to dance again… I was vaguely familiar with Renaissance polyphonic choir music, but it really clicked when I was at a (super weird) dance performance, where the dancers were singing the score themselves. One of the pieces was a composition by Josquin des Prez, and it blew me away. Especially in the reverberating hall it was performed in, the sound of these interlocking voices became so immersive… It reminded me of how powerful a voice can be. This kinda music can actually work as perfect ambient music, sort of like a much older version of Brian Eno’s music, but ‘cause it’s only voices, there’s a purity to it that makes it so intimidatingly beautiful. It was quite an influence on the With Voices album, and it comes to the fore on the (sacred feeling) track with Marissa. Source
