  1. Anonymous producers are all the rage right now. Perhaps it’s because they’re so mysterious, or maybe because they consistently keep us guessing. Whatever it is — Bonez is doing it right, as heard with this new single “Body Bag.” Dark undertones and a sinister overlying theme only add to the hype Bonez puts forth with his latest release. While the production screams dark house, “Body Bag” still has an upbeat way about it — blending bass and electro house elements to the track’s advantage. This is key because no matter what kind of darkness ensues, people still want to dance. “Body Bag” serves as a strong follow up to Bonez’ debut single “ILTWYD.” It’s easy to hear he’s going deeper down his own rabbit hole and we can only expect the trend to continue with more releases yet to come. 2. Ex Hex, the DC power trio comprised of Mary Timony, Betsy Wright, and Laura Harris, have announced a new album, their first since the band’s 2014 breakthrough, Rips. Called It’s Real, the LP is due for release on March 22nd via Merge Records. Described as “a reaction to the blown-out aesthetic of Rips,” It’s Real embraces layered vocal harmonies, art rock flourishes, and drawn-out codas that emphasize the band’s loud, glammy riffs. The trio re-teamed with Rips producer Jonah Takagi for the album, which is built upon “dozens” of guitar amps, including a bygone Rockman. “It’s only about the size of a Walkman and takes eight AA batteries, but it sounds massive,” Timony said in a press release. “We read that parts of [Def Leppard’s] Hysteria were tracked through it, and when we finally plugged it in, it blew our minds!” Lead single “Cosmic Cave” pairs bold, shimmering guitars and rip-roaring solos with the kind of chorus that turns tapping toes into dancing ones. Hear it below. Ex Hex will hit the road in support of It’s Real in April, touring the states before hopping a plane to England for a handful of dates. Check them out below. 4. After a year of relentless teasing on socials, Ryan Adams finally confirmed on Monday night that he’s back with not one, not two, but three new albums for 2019. Now, courtesy of The Washington Post’s Power Up newsletter, we have details surrounding his first record, Big Colors, which is due out April 19th. Produced by Adams, Beatriz Artola, and Don Was, the 15-track LP finds Adams tapping into “the deepest reaches of the Creative Ether.” Eh, we’ll let Was do the talking, who tells the Post: “I wish everyone could witness the awe-inspiring sight of Ryan Adams recording in the studio . . . the endless flow of brilliant ideas is mind blowing and he’s clearly tapped into the deepest reaches of the Creative Ether. His forthcoming album(s) elevate his art form to a whole new stratosphere and it’s an honor and a thrill for all of us at Blue Note Records to work with him. Oh yeah . . . one other thing: he’s the most underrated guitarist in rock n roll.” Update: Per CBS News’ Anthony Mason, Adams has also shared the details of his second album, Wednesdays. It spans 17 tracks and features contributions from Emmylou Harris, Jason Isbell, and Benmont Tench of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. A release date is still forthcoming. See the artwork and tracklists for both releases below. Here’s hoping The Miami Herald or The New York Times has the exclusive on the single. Loving this roll out. 5. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and there are multiple events in the works in celebration of the trailblazing music festival. Already we’ve heard about plans for the Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival, a multi-date event being staged by Live Nation on the site of Woodstock’s original festival grounds. Now, Woodstock co-founder Michael Lang has revealed his own plans for a festival, which will take place August 16th-18th in nearby Watkins Glen, New York. According to Rolling Stone, Lang’s 2019 incarnation of Woodstock will feature over 40 acts performing across three stages. “It’ll be an eclectic bill,” Lang explained. “It’ll be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival.” There will also be tributes to many of the original Woodstock performers, including Janis Joplin, The Band, Jefferson Airplane, and Joe Cocker. Lang’s previous attempt to revive Woodstock in 1999 was nothing short of a disaster. A combination of an excessive heatwave, overpriced water, and poor bathroom facilities led festival-goers to riot and even set fire to a portion of the festival grounds. This time, Lang promises things will be different. “There will be ‘glamping’ tents and stuff like that,” Lang told Rolling Stone. “There will be those types of experiences in various forms where there’s a real bed, and there’s a chair to sit in and a light bulb. There will also be easier access to portable toilets.” Lang is also more directly involved in booking Woodstock’s 2019 lineup. “I shouldn’t have left the booking to others,” he said of the 1999 event, which featured Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Creed. “Woodstock ’99 was just a musical experience with no social significance,” Lang added. “It was just a big party. With this one, we’re going back to our roots and our original intent. And this time around, we’ll have control of everything.” More details, including an artist lineup and ticketing information, will be announced in February. Source
  6. Beguiling DC outfit Priests are back with a new album roughly two years after the release of their daring debut LP, Nothing Feels Natural. Journeyman producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen) helmed the new record, which is called The Seduction of Kansas and will arrive on April 5th via Sister Polygon Records. The Seduction of Kansas finds the genre-defying band broadening its web, pulling in not just Congleton, but also a number of DC-based collaborators that include multi-instrumentalist and Marissa Nadler collaborator Janel Leppin and touring bassist Alexandra Tyson. In a press release, the band name-checks albums like Mezzanine and Downward Spiral as their chief inspirations. The lead single (and title track) is shinier and more synth-driven than much of their earlier work, but maintains an anxious undercurrent that pairs well with vocalist Katie Alice Greer’s boundless energy and vibrant lyricism (“Bloodthirsty cherub choir/ from the cornfields you sing to me”). The cut comes with a playful video, directed by Greer, that mirrors the song’s left-of-center opulence. Check it out below along with the album’s artwork and tracklist. 7. What’s better than one new album from Foals? Two new albums from Foals. The UK alt-rock outfit has announced the impending releases of Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 and Part 2. While specifics are still forthcoming, drummer Jack Bevan indicated that Part 1 and Part 2 are two distinct albums as opposed to a single album split in half. We’ve reached out to the band’s representatives for more clarity. Foals also shared a teaser trailer for the upcoming releases, which you can watch below. Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 and Part 2 serve as the follow-up to Foals’ 2015 LP,What Went Down. The band has also begun to hammer out a 2019 touring schedule, including festival appearances at Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival and Lollapalooza’s South American fests. Take a listen to ““Jumpin on a Jet” along with its Colin Tilley-directed video below. Future previously previewed The WIZRD with “Crushed Up”. The WIZRD marks the proper follow-up to Future’s double dose of 2017 LPs, Future and Hndrxx. Source
  9. Like Superman, or Loki, or Jean Grey, or any of the dozens of other characters who’ve cheated death, comic book movies are the trend that just won’t die. Two decades after Blade kicked off the cinematic superhero renaissance (don’t at me), comic adaptations still rule the box office. Half of last year’s top 10 highest domestic grossing films were based on funny books (and another, The Incredibles 2, was reverentially indebted to them). Even critically panned romps like Aquaman and mediocre monstrosities like Venom broke bank despite subpar filmmaking. That recent history means that, sure, we’re bound to end up with a share of overwrought, lackluster third act disasters in 2019, but we’re also virtually guaranteed some amazing caped adventures. That’s because not only is the superhero onslaught not slowing down, it’s actually getting better. The DC Extended Universe actually has some wins under its belt, someone finally nailed Spider-Man, and women and POC are no longer persona non grata as lead heroes. This year will see Marvel debut their first female-fronted blockbuster with Captain Marvel. Warner Bros. will try to continue its entertaining DC turnaround with another playful entry, Shazam!. Fox’s pair of long-delayed X-films, Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants, will at last see release. We’ve even got a gritty, all-star character study coming with Joker. So suit up and grab your popcorn, because here… we… go! –Ben Kaye News Editor __________________________________________________________ Glass Glass (Universal Pictures) Release: January 18th via Universal Why We’re Excited: While not technically a comic book series, M. Night Shyamalan’s Eastrail 177 Trilogy birthed interconnected superhero universes before Iron Man was a household name. That dozens of blockbusters have been released between the first entry (2000’s Unbreakable) and the midpoint (2017’s Split) takes nothing away from the fact that the auteur filmmaker envisioned a three-part story (hero, villain, confrontation) first. Having rather brilliantly snuck the second part into theaters over a decade-and-a-half after the first, we’ll finally get to witness Shyamalan’s vision fully realized when Bruce Willis’ David Dunn/The Overseer, Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price/Mr. Glass, and James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb/The Beast meet in Glass. Add in a returning Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey and newcomer Sarah Paulson as Dr. Ellie Staple and the culmination of this superhero deconstruction is more anticipated than ever. –Ben Kaye Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Alita: Battle Angel Alita: Battle Angel (20th Century Fox) Release: February 14th via 20th Century Fox Why We’re Excited: Anybody who was a part of the Internet film community in the early, message board-driven days understands just how long Alita: Battle Angel has been in development. The manga adaptation is probably the most fevered non-Avatar fixation of James Cameron’s career, and finally (after no shortage of release changes and delays), Robert Rodriguez will bring the ambitious feature to fruition. Set in a dystopic future where a consciousness can be re-uploaded into machines, Alita follows a young cyborg (Rosa Salazar) whose particular set of skills makes her an immediate target to the corrupt forces running the film’s cyberpunk world. Get ready for the kind of ambitious, eye-popping sci-fi that’ll probably lose 20th Century Fox a pile of money and live forever in cold admiration. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Captain Marvel Captain Marvel (Marvel) Release: March 8th via Marvel Why We’re Excited: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the driving force of the big screen superhero market, there’s no doubt. Over a decade into its existence, there’s also no doubt that Marvel Studios will consistently find ways to keep us entertained, but it’s still exciting to watch how. This time, they’re delivering their first period piece, telling a ’90s tale about the MCU’s first hero — a logical move considering the ashen state of most of the current crop of Avengers. As Captain Marvel herself, Brie Larson looks like big budget lead actress we’ve long known her to be as she puts up her photon-blasting dukes alongside Jude Law (Mar-Vell), Ben Mendelsohn (a shapeshifting Skrull named Talos), and an impressively digitally de-aged Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). Though perhaps the gender politics of having a female action hero directed by a female filmmaker (Anna Boden, with Ryan Fleck) are a less prominent issue in a post-Wonder Woman world, learning how such a character is going to redirect the biggest superhero franchise in the world certainly has us enticed. –Ben Kaye Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Shazam! Shazam! (Warner Bros.) Release: April 5th via Warner Bros. Why We’re Excited: Suddenly the DC Extended Universe isn’t such a dumpster fire anymore. The Distinguished Competition now have a critical hit (Wonder Woman) and, soon, a billion dollar smash (Aquaman) to their name. Though the clearly inferior of the two, the latter’s greater financial windfall may have something to do with its lighthearted approach to herodom. A more innately playful property than the King of Atlantis, Shazam! has all the potential to build off that success. While Zachary Levi doesn’t strike as the prototypical muscled man in a cape, his irrepressible charm make him a perfect choice for the kid-in-a-superhero’s-body role of the title character. That boyishness should also make for a great foil against Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman, while talents like Mark Strong and Djimon Hounsou round out the cast. It’ll be interesting to see how the DCEU goes about introducing its first non-Justice Leaguer in a solo adventure, but so far it at least looks like it’ll be a fun ride. –Ben Kaye Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Hellboy Hellboy (Summit Entertainment) Release: April 12th via Summit Entertainment Why We’re Excited: It’s strange to see a Hellboy reboot when pop culture hasn’t even circled back around to fully embrace Guillermo Del Toro’s two weird, wonderful adaptations of the demonic comic. But as long as there’s an IP to be mined, there are reboots to be had. In that spirit, Neil Marshall will deliver a seemingly more humor-centric take on the reformed son of the devil, with beloved Stranger Things sheriff David Harbour taking Ron Perlman’s place under the pounds and pounds of prosthetic makeup. There are so many fun, strange adventures still left un-filmed in the Hellboy world that we’re hopeful this new entry will allow for more to come, this time around. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Avengers: Endgame Avengers: Endgame (Marvel) Release: April 26th via Marvel Why We’re Excited: In a lot of ways, it almost feels superfluous to even write around 150 words on Avengers: Endgame. You’re going to see it. Everybody you know is going to see it. That guy on your Facebook feed making a show of how he’s the only one who won’t see it is probably going to see it like three or four times. Disney has made sure that you want to see it, that you are abundantly aware of it, and that there is no escaping it at any given point in time. Thanos snapped his fingers, everything went to hell, and now the brothers Russo are going to offer up another three hours of grand spectacle that’ll gross the GDP of a mid-sized nation. We’ll see you all there. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Dark Phoenix Dark Phoenix (20th Century Fox) Release: June 7th via Twentieth Century Fox Why We’re Excited: There’s actually not a lot riding on this latest entry in the X-Men franchise, what with the impending sale of Fox’s properties to Disney. Instead, Dark Phoenix is shaping up to be something of a last hurrah for the X-Universe as we know it — and it couldn’t be going out in bigger fashion. First-time director Simon Kinberg has been given the chance to expiate for the hand he had in bungling one of the most classic X-Men storylines of all time when he penned the script for X-Men: The Last Stand, and he’s set himself up for major success. He’s gifted himself a stellar cast (Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan) through his years writing and producing the X-Films, and hopefully learned his mistakes from the disappointing X-Men: Apocalypse and his previous attempt at adapting the Dark Phoenix Saga. He even got Hans Zimmer to come out of superhero retirement to score the flick. We’ve never been more thrilled to witness the finale of a beloved superhero universe. –Ben Kaye Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Spider-Man: Far From Home Spider-Man: Homecoming (Sony) Release: July 5th via Disney Why We’re Excited: Who else heard that audible gasp of disbelief from theatergoers when Tom Holland uttered, “I don’t wanna go, sir, please…” at the end of Infinity War? Even though every sensible fan knew damn well Marvel wasn’t going to kill off Spider-Man just three movies into his reboot, those choked back tears were valid because audiences finally have a Peter Parker they love. Having so many incarnations of the same character shoved in front of us so fast should have warn him out, but it took three tries to reach the definitive take, so now we’re swinging from the ceilings for more. This time out, we get Jake Gyllenhaal as the fan-favorite villain Mysterio, a character dripping with cinematic potential. Toss in rumors that the MCU version of the Sinister Six will start taking shape with Hydro-Man and Chameleon appearances (as well as the return of Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Michael Mando’s Mac Gargan/Scorpion), and we may be more antsy for this than even Endgame. –Ben Kaye __________________________________________________________ The New Mutants The New Mutants (20th Century Fox) Release: August 2nd via Disney Why We’re Excited: It’s increasingly starting to feel like The New Mutants is just an urban myth born of the movie-loving internet. Josh Boone’s horror-minded take on X-Men mythology has been pushed around the schedule, pushed around again, and surrounded by rumors of extensive reshoots for so long now that even featuring it in this year’s preview gives us pause. (Yeah, it was also featured in last year’s as well.) Even if the premise sounds more than a little like Chronicle, and even if that R rating the film was reportedly chasing is highly unlikely to stick at this point, there are far more ways to tell an X-Men story than the adaptations to date have typically allowed. We’re hoping Boone still found a way to pull it off. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Joker Joker (Warner Bros.) Release: October 4th via Disney Why We’re Excited: Imagine telling movie fans 10 years ago that the director of The Hangover would be helming a stand-alone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, who also wouldn’t be playing the only active Joker in a movie series at that moment in time. That’s where we are with Joker, however, and early footage has suggested that Phoenix has done what many would struggle to do and Jared Leto decidedly couldn’t: find a way to play the classic villain that doesn’t crib liberally from Heath Ledger’s iconic interpretation. Only time and a handful of trailers will tell for sure, but we hope that director Todd Phillips has what it takes to do the character justice. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Source
  10. Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell is one of our most anticipated pop releases of 2019. Having recently finished the album, the pop singer has decided to break off another teaser track. Del Rey originally previewed the track back in October, at which point it was referred to as “Sylvia Path”. The final version has now been unveiled under a different, rather long-winded title. Take a listen to “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it”. A release date for Norman Fucking Rockwell is still forthcoming. The album was produced by our 2017 Producer of the Year Jack Antonoff, and may or may not feature “Venice Bitch”and “Mariners Apartment Complex”, the two singles Del Rey released in 2018. Additionally, Del Rey debuted a new, unreleased song during an Apple event performance in October. Del Rey also has a book of poetry on the way. Source
  11. Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old sad-pop prodigy we recently named our 2018 Rookie of the Year, has shared a new song with a surprising inspiration. “When I Was Older”, Eilish says, was inspired by Alfonso Cuarón’s acclaimed new film, Roma, which took home two Golden Globes this past weekend, including a Best Director statue for Cuarón. (Read: Top 50 Songs of 2018) It makes sense for Eilish, as the singer recently told us that she prefers to write from perspectives that aren’t her own. “I write in characters a lot, so it’s not necessarily anything that I’m going through at all. It’s just art,” she said, adding that a lot of her song “I don’t necessarily want to write about my life — there’s only so much going on in my brain.” Hear it below. Roma is currently streaming on Netflix. It follows a domestic worker’s journey in 1970s Mexico, and has been praised not just for its humanity, but also for the ways in which Cuarón captures both the era and the landscape of the film’s namesake Mexican neighborhood. Eilish, meanwhile, is gearing up for the release of her debut LP after releasing striking singles like “you should see me in a crown”, “when the party’s over”, and “come out and play”. Source
  12. When Calvin Harris puts out new music, we never quite know what we’re going to get. His next and totally unexpected collab — “Giant” with Rag’n’Bone Man — is almost here. For now, he’s sharing just enough to pique our interest until Friday comes along. The teaser below features a relatively tame portion of the production (at least, by dance music standards) with light strums and purposeful chord strikes. The focus, however, is on the vocal performance by Rag’n’Bone Man. His powerful and soulful voice commands the track instinctually, hinting at another sure hit by Calvin Harris. It’s hard to say which part of “Giant” we’re hearing here. A mere 16 seconds simply isn’t enough time to gather where the production is heading — but, so far, so good. Check back Friday to hear the collaboration in full. 13. If you thought that the nation hit a new low when we couldn’t even bite into some innocent strawbs without risking a gruesome injury then I’m afraid to say I’ve got some awful, awful news for you. Anthony Artusa was on his morning commute in Melbourne, when he sat down and to his horror noticed that there were a number of needles sticking out of his seat and directly into him. “Word of warning when travelling on @metrotrains,” Mr Artusa tweeted on Tuesday morning. “Had a lovely surprise this morning when I sat on a seat with around 20 needles sticking out of it.” Word of warning when travelling on @metrotrains. Had a lovely surprise this morning when I sat on a seat with around 20 needles sticking out of it 🤙🏼 #NeedlesOfMelbourne pic.twitter.com/zjjVwgrBXo — Anth (@aartusa) January 7, 2019 Yep, copping a handful of needles in your arse and legs has got to go down as one of the worst ways to start 2019. Metro Trains hit old mate up on Twitter to ask his carriage number, but like the good samaritan he is he reckons he was too busy checking over seats to notice, “I didn’t look, was too busy checking other seats and picking needles from the seat.” Metro confirmed they have launched a full investigation and will be working with the police closely to catch the perpetrators, Anthony will have a blood screening to make sure he’s A-Ok. 16. Jim Gianopulos, the head of Paramount Pictures, announced at last year’s CinemaCon that the studio was working on two new movies in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise. One of those seemed likely to be Quentin Tarentino’s J.J. Abrams-approved vision for an R-Rated entry in the series. The other was later announced as Star Trek 4, a sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond helmed by the franchise’s first female director S.J. Clarkson and penned by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. However, now it appears Star Trek 4 might not be taking off after all. Clarkson was announced today as the pilot director and an executive producer on HBO’s upcoming Game Of Thrones spin-off, which will be set some 5,000 years prior to the mainline series. Now, Deadline reports that her availability to take the gig was a result of the planned Star Trek sequel being shelved. While no official reason has been announced for why the studio has halted production on the film, it’s likely at least in some part due to contract disputes with its prospective leads. Last August, both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth stepped away from negotiations that would have left them taking a pay cut following Beyond’s relatively underwhelming box office performance. Pine was in line to return once again as James Kirk, with Hemsworth was slated to reprise his brief cameo from the first film as Kirk’s father for a major role in the latest outing. Paramount offered no comment in response to inquiries regarding the status of the film. Source

  19. Over the past 21 years, Shambhala Music Festival has thrived on Salmo River Ranch in Southern British Columbia, Canada. I was shocked and delighted to find out that during the festival, Shambhala Music Festival becomes the largest city in the West Kootenay Region. With close to 19,000 attendees last year, the 22nd annual Shambhala Music Festival is shaping up to be the best year yet. Getting There Getting to Shambhala is quite a journey, since it is located in such a remote region, which only adds to its majesty. According to their website, here are your options for air travel to SMF this year. Remember, a passport is required to enter Canada. • Trail, BC – Flights available through Pacific Coastal Airlines – 43 km, approx 50 minutes drive to festival site – Regional Airport (flights from Vancouver South Terminal Only) • Castlegar, BC – 44 km, approx 50 minutes drive to festival site – Regional Airport – Flights available through Air Canada • Cranbrook, BC – 197 km, approx 2.5 hr drive to festival site – Int’l Airport (plus time change) • Spokane, WA, USA – 169 mi, approx 3.5 hr drive to festival site – Int’l Airport (plus Border Crossing time, recommended route via Paterson shown, 24 hr crossing) Another fact you may not know about this festival is that it is alcohol free. The creators have concluded that not allowing alcohol has contributed to the vibe of the festival in an overall positive way. There are less incidents that way, and attendees are safer. Shambhalove Shambhala is unique from other festivals because of its ability to bring cutting edge production to such a remote area, while not accepting any corporate sponsorships. “This allows the festival to retain a true reflection of the people on the dance floor and their vision of what their community looks like. This mission is important to hold down as electronic dance music culture has moved into the mainstream where opportunistic corporations have threatened to water it down. In this respect, this festival’s community is like no other. You will not see one advertisement or corporate logo on the farm.” Stages You will be able to find your home here, as Shambhala boasts SIX stages. That’s right. They’ve got AMP, Fractal Forest, The Grove, Living Room, The Village, and Pagoda, each with their own exciting genres of underground dance music to pump out into your awaiting ears. “Throughout the evolution of the festival, one clear value has remained constant; to continue to be the backdrop for an unparalleled experience. Believing in the power of nature, synchronicity, and the moments in between, Shambhala can promise that what is felt on the Ranch is not within the realm of ordinary.” Art, Workshops, Yoga To explore the many realms of Shambhala, stepping away from the stages momentarily is necessary, and that won’t be hard to do with BASScamp, Shambhala’s art hub, a geo-dome displaying influential art pieces created by artists from all over the world. Frolic over to the Cedar Lounge to feed your mind to the sweet melodies of the Grove in the background with the workshops that will be featured here. You never know what you may learn that you can take with you for the rest of your life. Knowledge is power. And of course, before losing yourself in front of the stage, discover the Yoga Garden and find yourself. “With nature as your yoga studio, allow the stillness to overcome you and embody the feeling of pure relaxation before the nighttime can begin.” Shambhala has something for everyone, and continuous exploration is so necessary on your other-worldly journey through this dream festival. Attractions If you’ve ever dreamed of getting married at a music festival, now is your chance. Shambhala provides a wedding chapel for you and your loved ones and friends to gather to witness the sweet ceremony of matrimony with the comforting sounds of music drifting through the Kootenay Mountains. Don’t forget to spin the Spirit Animal wheel to figure out which animal embodies your soul, and don your costumes on Friday to participate in the Shambhala Parade. Sustenance Treat your body with Salmo River Ranch raised beef, pork, and veggies grown right on the property. Last year, the festival devoured the likes of Blaze Burgers, Nightowl Café, Farm Phresh Smoothies, Oink BBQ, Lemon Hut, and Pasta Joint. These locally sourced and sustainable options are sure to keep your body going throughout the entire weekend. Food you can feel good about, that’s what I call contributing to Shambhalove. Shambhala is a superior music & arts festival that’s bursting with culture. You will never know the depth of the impact that this festival can have on your entire being until you experience it yourself. Buy your tickets HERE for one of the most life-changing events in the world happening August 9-12, 2019, and be ready to immerse yourselves in two of our favorite aspects of life: nature & bass. 20. The hype around Skrillex was expected to peak in 2018 with an album and/or tour. Neither happened, though he did start playing more shows toward the end of the year. However, rather than the hype dying or being displaced, it seems that the momentum is being carried over into 2019. As evidenced by his NYE set at Snowta, there’s still plenty to look forward to. Over the course of his set, Skrillex unleashed holy terror upon the audience in Minnesota, including loads of unreleased goodies. Thankfully for those of us not present, there are people like TO THE RIGHT on YouTube who recorded most, if not all, of his set. Even better, the final uploaded version of the set is just a compilation of all his still-unreleased music. Pieces like his edit of Dimension’s “UK,” “Face My Fears” and more were captured in stunning quality — though they serve to deliver more anxious anticipation than excitement at this point. 21. It’s shaping up to be a busy year with both James Blake and Flume teasing news of new music and now fairy enigmatic Los Angeles producer Shlohmo has thrown his hat into the ring. Sharing on his channels was a look at his new album artwork, album title ‘The End’, a release date penned for the 30th of Jan and a scrambled messaged for fans; The signs reveal themselves. The door to the physical Kingdom Level above human will be unlocked. These bodies are mere containers. When The End™️ comes where will you be what will you do how will we transition? What to expect? Likely the glitchy, bubbling goodness we’ve come to know from Shlohmo especially since he hasn’t released anything in a few years. The album will follow the footsteps of earlier LPs ‘Bad Vibes’ from way back in 2011 and ‘Dark Red’ in 2015 as well as a single he dropped last year ‘Wen 222’ – although we’re unsure this is anything but a rarity he dug out of an old hard drive as explained; To celebrate the reissue of my Vacation EP, I scoured deep into several ancient firewire hard drives and somehow found the original files for ‘Wen uuu :)’ and remade/ reimagined the song into ‘Wen 222,’ available now for your listening pleasure ‘The End’ drops January 30th 2019. 22. Pig Destroyer are one of grindcore’s finest, but apparently their music is not for everyone — just ask the title character on CBS’ TV show MacGyver, as he and his cohort were tortured with the band’s track “The Bug” from the band’s 2012 album, Book Burner. The music blasts while Angus MacGyver and another character are captured in a fallout shelter, forcing the pair to cover their ears with their hands as they writhe in agony. The metal moment happened on the most recent episode of MacGyver, which aired this past Friday. The band itself got a kick out of the scene, posting video of the clip, along with the caption, “That’s right you heard ‘The Bug’ by Pig Destroyer on CBS’s Macgyver last night!” [See Also: Marilyn Manson, NIN Songs Used for Torture by U.S. Officials] When they’re not torturing fictional characters on TV shows, Pig Destroyer are promoting their latest album, Head Cage, which landed on our list of the Top 25 Metal + Hard Rock Albums of 2018. The band last played a show at the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest in Los Angeles, but have no 2019 dates scheduled as of yet. Source
  23. The Bonnaroo lineup came out this morning, giving festival lovers another event to fawn over. With everything from Phish to Post Malone to Grand Ole Opry to RL Grime on the lineup, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy. But how does the electronic lineup compare to the rest of the festival? Or even other festivals for that matter? Let’s take a deep dive on the four-day festival lineup and find out what it’s all about. Bonnaroo starts on Thursday, which, separate from a lot of other major music festivals in the summer months, gives attendees an entire extra day to have fun and experience new sights and sounds. A lot of music and other activities will be going on in the campgrounds on Thursday, as well as a pretty stellar EDM lineup to kick things off. Space Jesus b2b Eprom b2b Shlump will no doubt be the highlight of the day, though forgetting about 12th Planet or Sunsquabi will certainly earn you demerits. Eprom will also perform a solo set, with Hekler bringing up the rear for a well-rounded, though bass heavy, first day. The second day of the festival is absolutely stacked with talent, as well — I know we’ve been overusing the word lately with all these lineup announcements coming out, but it’s certainly applicable here. Griz and RL Grime serve as de facto headliners for Friday, but there’s plenty more. Griz will host the super jam this year, which will quite simply be divine. NGHTMRE, Girl Talk, Liquid Stranger, Medasin, Ducky, Mersiv, and Crooked Colours will likely round out the Other Stage lineup on Friday. Saturday brings one of dance music’s biggest act to its main stage: Odesza. The melodic, drumline-accompanied phenomenon of a group has far outgrown any of the smaller dance tents, as we clearly saw at Coachella last year. Zhu will also likely escape the tent, but probably won’t make the main stage. The Other Stage will likely be headlined by Gramatik on Saturday, with help from Space Jesus, Tokimonsta, SNBRN, Whipped Cream, Memba, and DJ Mel. Sunday, the final day, looks to be a little lighter on dance music than the rest of the weekend, but only in quantity. As far as quality is concerned, it measures up. We might see Illenium on Roo’s main stage, but he won’t fit in the Other Stage anymore. The rest of the dance music lineup is comprised of G Jones (note: Space Jesus, Eprom, Shlump, Liquid Stranger, G Jones all on the same lineup – there’s a clear pattern here), Two Feet(maybe at Other stage maybe not), AC Slater, CID, Dombresky, and Iglooghost. And (as if all that wasn’t enough already) all of this fails to mention the crown jewel of EDM at Bonnaroo – the Kalliope stage. Bonnaroo has no curfew – it’s “24/7,” and unlike most other stages this one goes till SUNRISE every night. Who will play? We won’t know ahead of time – it’s ALL surprises. 2018 featured a sunrise set from Kaskade, and past years have featured the likes of Skrillex and other big names. So we might not know ahead of time, but you can bet your money there will be a great mix of well-known names and surprises atop Kalliope till the wee hours of the morning. All of this to say, even if you neglected everything other than dance music (which we don’t recommend, but you do you), you’d still experience a wide variety of artists and acts. While there are bound to be artists you feel deserve to be on the lineup or some you simply just wish were on it, that doesn’t diminish the fact that the dance music lineup is strong. Tickets on sale Thursday 1/10 at Noon ET! Snag a GA ticket for just $47 down using Roo’s payment plans. Explore the Bonnaroo experience here. 24. David Chase announced last year that he’d begun work on a prequel film to his beloved HBO series The Sopranos. We received few details at the time besides a title — The Many Saints of Newark — and learning that the movie would be set in the 1960s with a focus on the race riots between African Americans and Italians in New Jersey. However, with the original series celebrating its 20th anniversary this week at the IFC Sopranos Film Festival, Chase spoke with Deadline to offer further details on the project. Chase confirmed that the movie will indeed heavily feature a young Tony Soprano, but will also center around his father, Johnny Boy, as well as his uncle Junior Soprano. Speaking about his motivation to return to the series after all this time, Chase told Deadline, “I was against [the movie] for a long time and I’m still very worried about it, but I became interested in Newark, where my parents came from, and where the riots took place.” He added, “I was living in suburban New Jersey at the time that happened, and my girlfriend was working in downtown Newark. I was just interested in the whole Newark riot thing. I started thinking about those events and organized crime, and I just got interested in mixing those two elements.” Longtime Sopranos director Alan Taylor is on board to helm the film from a script Chase penned alongside fellow series writer Lawrence Konner. The creator had long suggested a possible sequel to the TV show since it left the air in 2007, however a prequel became the only plausible option when James Gandolfini passed away in 2013. The movie is being made by New Line and Warner Bros., and is currently in the casting stage with production set to begin later this year. Source
  25. One of the more exciting points in any movie year is this moment, early on, when a bunch of directors who’ve made films we love are releasing new movies, and nobody knows if they’ll be any good or not. The period before the early reactions, the hot takes, the hubbub that makes even a great movie exhausting from time to time. Everything is optimistic, our eager minds flush with hope that the new year will surprise and delight us in ways expected and otherwise. 2019 sees a number of long-awaited returns alongside eagerly anticipated follow-ups, all coming from a host of directors who’ve made some of our favorite movies of the last decade (and further back still). Harmony Korine returns for the first time since Spring Breakers six years ago, Ang Lee tries his hand at genre filmmaking once again, and Greta Gerwig trades on her newfound directorial clout to take on an undisputed American classic. Plus, Quentin Tarantino’s back. That’s still an event, even if a more controversial one than it used to be. It’s pretty likely that this year is going to shatter every box office record under the sun, but as the decade draws to a close (oh god, already?), we’re hoping to get a few more new masterpieces in under the gun. Those best-of-the-decade lists you’ll all be working on in 10 months’ time are waiting. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Film Editor __________________________________________________________ The Beach Bum The Beach Bum (Neon) Release: March 22nd via Neon Director: Harmony Korine Why We’re Excited: Six years ago, Harmony Korine turned the garish excesses of dubstep hedonism into high art with his hazy, Florida-washed masterpiece Spring Breakers. He’ll now return to that sun-soaked milieu for The Beach Bum, which continues Korine’s yen for inspired stunt casting by surrounding Matthew McConaughey’s titular fuckup with such faces as Snoop Dogg, Jimmy Buffett, Martin Lawrence, and Zac Efron as a malevolent Christian punk. Nobody makes movies quite like Korine’s, and whether it works or not, we’d put good money on The Beach Bum not being whatever the trailers have led you to believe it is. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Where’d You Go, Bernadette Where’d You Go, Bernadette (Annapurna) Release: March 22nd via Annapurna Director: Richard Linklater Why We’re Excited: After taking a year off following 2017’s Last Flag Flying, Richard Linklater returns with another adaptation, this time to Maria Semple’s 2012 novel about an agoraphobic architect and mother who goes missing. Now, don’t let that pitch fool you, this isn’t some cold case file. It’s a hearty dramedy with Oscar winner Cate Blanchett playing the titular Bernadette and top lining an equally hearty cast in Billy Crudup, Emma Nelson, Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer, and Laurence Fishburne. What’s slightly disconcerting is the hearty lineup of writers attached to it — a whopping five — but, hey, it’s Linklater. –Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Under the Silver Lake Under the Silver Lake (A24) Release: April 19th via A24 Director: David Robert Mitchell Why We’re Excited: Not-so-fun fact: this is now the third consecutive year in which Consequence of Sound has run a coming-soon hit about Under the Silver Lake, David Robert Mitchell’s long-awaited follow-up to It Follows. After being rumored for a late 2018 rollout, divisive responses at Cannes and later Fantastic Fest led A24 to nudge the stoner noir feature into yet another calendar frame. At last, however, we’ll get to see Andrew Garfield wander through an especially seedy L.A. full of sun, pop culture references, and no shortage of evil waiting in the margins. It’s been compared to so many different cult movies at this point that it’s starting to sound like the kind of thing we have to see. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Ford v. Ferrari Ford v. Ferrari (20th Century Fox) Release: June 28th via 20th Century Fox Director: James Mangold Why We’re Excited: Now that he’s done with X-Men after flipping the script on the superhero genre with 2017’s Oscar-nominated Logan, James Mangold is getting back to basics. Kind of. With Ford v. Ferrari, the veteran filmmaker rides shotgun with Christian Bale and Matt Damon, putting the pedal to the metal on a historical drama that could very well go vroom, vroom into awards season. It’s a great story, too, following an American team of engineers who were tasked by Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca to defeat Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. Vroom, vroom, indeed. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio Release: July 26th via Sony Director: Quentin Tarantino Why We’re Excited: Both the film industry and the critical landscape have changed a lot since Quentin Tarantino became a superstar in the early ‘90s with Reservoir Dogs, but somehow, each new movie he releases still manages to feel like An Event in a way few other directors can touch. That’s going to be especially true of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino’s far-ranging epic following a pair of L.A. detectives (Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt) pursuing the Manson family in the wake of a string of grisly murders, including that of Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). There are few more controversial eras of movie history to make a movie about, which in its way, feels quintessentially Tarantino. So does the star-studded casting, so does the inevitable use of pitch-perfect music cues from the time. Love it or hate it, you’re about to spend the entire end of your summer talking about this one. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Untitled Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis Project Danny Boyle, photo by Heather Kaplan Release: September 13th via Universal Director: Danny Boyle Why We’re Excited: With James Bond long behind him, Danny Boyle now gets to do what he does best, which is provide the world with some original storytelling. This time around, he’s teamed up with Love Actually writer/director Richard Curtis, and the two are doubling back to the ’60s and ’70s for a comedy musical that reportedly follows “a struggling musician who thinks he’s the only person who can remember the Beatles.” Okay, that’s pretty good, and so is the film’s prospective ensemble, which strings together Ed Sheeran, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, Himesh Patel, and Ana de Armas. As long as it’s not another Across the Universe, this should get everyone twisting and shouting. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Gemini Man Gemini Man (Paramount) Release: October 4th via Paramount Director: Ang Lee Why We’re Excited: Save for After Earth, Will Smith has a pretty great track record when it comes to sci-fi films. He’s also on another level when he’s working with a high-caliber filmmaker, and Oscar winner Ang Lee is one such filmmaker. With Gemini Man, Smith plays an aging assassin who’s being trailed by a younger clone of himself. It’s an intriguing premise that should allow Li to go all out visually, as he did not so long ago with 2012’s Life of Pi. Toss in Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Benedict Wong, and we might just have a vintage, original Smith blockbuster on our hands. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Tom Hanks in Mr. Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Release: October 18th via TriStar Director: Marielle Heller Why We’re Excited: Both Mr. Rogers and Marielle Heller had a fantastic 2018. The former saw himself iconized in the outstanding documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor, while the latter is entering the current awards season with Can You Ever Forgive Me?. By the end of 2019, both parties will come together with a little help from Tom Hanks in the Fred Rogers biopic that we never knew how much we wanted, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Mind you, we’re still wiping off the tears from both Won’t You Be My Neighbor and Can You Ever Forgive Me?, so it’s a good thing this won’t drop ’til October. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Little Women Little Women (Sony) Release: December 25th via Sony Why We’re Excited: After Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig could have done pretty much anything for her directorial follow-up. In taking on an absolute classic on the level of Little Women, she could well marry her keen eye for the maturation rituals of young girls with the kind of period-set prestige that awards voters tend to favor in droves. Featuring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, and Eliza Scanlen as the titular young women, and Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Chris Cooper, and Bob Odenkirk elsewhere, this is exactly the kind of pedigreed movie that could be a major hit with critics and audiences alike, just in time for Christmas. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ 1917 Sam Mendes on Spectre (Sony) Release: December 25th via Universal Why We’re Excited: Like Danny Boyle, Sam Mendes also doesn’t have to worry about James Bond anymore. Yet unlike Boyle, Mendes hasn’t actually made a Bondless film since 2009’s Away We Go, which is partly what makes his followup, 1917, so damn exciting. Needless to say, he hasn’t moved away from the gunplay as the film tells an original story set during World War I that Mendes wrote alongside screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Details are scarce, though production begins this April with George MacKay (Captain Fantastic) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones) to star. Expect this one to make a bid for Oscar. –Michael Roffman Source
