  1. The future of Rae Sremmurd is in doubt following cryptic social media posts by Slim Jxmmi. The popular hip-hop duo comprises Slim Jxmmi and his brother, Swae Lee. In a since-deleted tweet posted Saturday, Slim Jxmmi implied his intention to go at it alone. “I’m not Rae Sremmurd I’m slim jxmmi and ima sink or swim by myself,” Jxmmi wrote. “Not SremmLife. Y’all won it’s a wrap,” he added. “Y’all still got ya mans swae y’all a be skraight.” In a subsequent Instagram post, Slim Jxmmi teased a new solo project dropping in 2019. I Really Hope This Is A Joke! #SlimJxmmi Says He Is No Longer #RaeSremmurd & That We Have @goSwaeLee Whats Going On? What Do You Guys Think? pic.twitter.com/mUvJXwfoiQ — Boot Blogs (@BootBlogs) January 12, 2019 Last year, Rae Sremmurd released their triple album, SR3MM, which included a pair of solo records (Slim Jxmmi’s Jxmtro and Swae Lee’s Swaecation) in addition to a collaborative LP. They previously announced plans for a 2019 follow-up LP called SremmLife4, but the release of that LP now seems to be in doubt. Source
  2. Tom Sizemore is in hot water again. According to the Burbank Police Department, the veteran actor was arrested for a misdemeanor drug possession on Saturday, January 5th after cops pulled him over. TMZ reports that Sizemore’s car had been missing its front license plate and also featured expired registration stickers. Arrest records indicate that a consented search revealed “various illegal narcotics”, among them reportedly heroin and meth. Both Sizemore and his male passenger were later released after posting bail. The arrest is the latest in a long string of charges for Sizemore involving drug use and battery against women. Last year, he was sued by a Utah woman, who claimed he groped her during a photo shoot when she was 11. She is currently seeking $3 million in damages. Sizemore’s last notable performance was in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return. Source
  3. Heading into 2019, The Chainsmokers have the right idea. It’s about time they put out new music. Of course, last year brought about a wave of new music from the duo. They started with their single “Sick Boy,” followed closely by “Everybody Hates Me,” and soon enough they ran through 10 tracks that would comprise their entire Sick Boy album. Collabs like “Save Yourself” with NGHTMRE and “Siren” with Aazar blew our minds and kept us guessing until the drop. Songs like “This Feeling” with Kelsea Ballerini and “Side Effects” with Emily Warren proved The Chainsmokers are still mainstream hit-making machines underneath it all. So what do The Chainsmokers sound like in 2019? We’re about to find out. Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart constantly reinvent their sound, which is exactly why fans are so eager to hear more. The Chainsmokers promise it’s “almost time” for that new new. As an added bonus, it sounds their collab with SAYMYNAME first teased at Ultra 2018 might finally be coming out. See the tweets below. 4. Anyone who grew up in the ’80s probably had a He-Man action figure, or at least knew someone who did. Toys for Masters of the Universe were just as ubiquitous as Barbies or G.I. Joes, and there’s no doubt that Sony wants to mine some of that nostalgia. According to Variety, the studio has tapped legendary Men in Black: International writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the screenplay for its forthcoming reboot of the 1987 film with Mumblecore directors Adam and Aaron Nee attached. It’s admittedly an odd team given the IP, but they can only go up. Sure, the original film starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella remains a campy cult classic, but it was also panned by critics upon its release. Odds are Sony won’t want a redux of that. As of now, it’s unclear whether they’ll be rewriting David S. Goyer’s original script, who remains a producer. Goyer isn’t exactly known for comedy like Marcum and Holloway, so it’s likely they wanted to go in a more tongue-in-cheek direction. It worked for Warner Bros., whose similarly fantastical Aquaman has shored up nearly a billion dollars for the studio. If Sony wants to do that, they’d be wise to try and conjure up some of that meta-comedy that made their Jump Street movies such a success. Channing Tatum as He-Man anyone? Source
  5. deadmau5 surprised us all when he enlisted Lights to transform one of his fan favorite IDs, “Midas Heel,” for release. What came of the production was “Drama Free” and we were all pleasantly surprised with the collaboration. Some of the nuances of the original instrumental, however, were lost a bit when Lights brightened up the production with her pop-inspired flavor. Don’t get us wrong — we love it. But, at the same time we’ve been craving that pure grittiness of the original “Midas Heel.” Finally, it has arrived in all its glory. As part of his Polar score, deadmau5 just put out the dark, ominous production in full and it’s totally vocal free. “deadmau5 is an unstoppable force,” director Jonas Åkerlund states in a press release. “Taking him out of his comfort zone to compose a film, he brought power and excellence to the score without losing that deadmau5 DNA we love so much. Walking into this project, we didn’t know what to expect. His unique and cutting-edge approach to composing Polar exceeded our expectations and brought a brilliance that guarantees his genius.” Listen here and watch Polar on Netflix on January 25th. deadmau5 – midas heel This article was first published on Your EDM. 6. The aughts were a torturous time for horror. While there were outliers such as Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, and all of those Japanese imports such as The Ring, most of the fare centered around the idea that the human body is a delicious thing to rip apart. That’s why filmmakers such as Eli Roth were all the rage and franchises like Saw were unstoppable blockbusters. One series that often gets forgotten is Final Destination, New Line’s underrated cash cow that started in 1999 with uber hunk Devon Sawa and came to a ghastly close with its fifth chapter in 2011. Not surprisingly, the franchise has yet to reach its titular namesake as the studio plans to resurrect the death defying series amid the current horror renaissance. According to Variety, New Line has given the green light for a new sequel to be written by Saw scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The two wrote the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh entries in that series, and will be coming off of this year’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Reckoning, and an untitled Christmas horror flick for Sony. Given their history, the two will undoubtedly carry over their own torturous edge to the Final franchise, which makes sense considering that the series punted any interest in character development ages ago in favor of a healthy mix of Maxim models and mayhem. Of course, part of the fun of any Final Destination is anticipating the creative kills, which is something these guys do well. (Ranking: Every Horror Movie Sequel From Worst to Best) Having said that, let’s just hope this isn’t the beginning of a torture porn resurgence. That’s the last thing we need right now, especially since the horror slate has been so goddamn eclectic as of late, giving us everything from tense monster movies (A Quiet Place) to cerebral psychological thrillers (Hereditary) to creative remakes (Suspiria). Then again, maybe everything can co-exist. If anything, maybe it’ll inspire New Line to resurrect another horror property of theirs … a road we like to call Elm Street? Wouldn’t that align nicely with the forthcoming season of our horror franchise podcast, Halloweenies, which kicks off next month with plans to dissect each one of Freddy’s Nightmares until the very end of 2019. 7. This year’s Coachella lineup drew about as much praise and condemnation as it usually does; the biggest difference this year being that the lineup looked more at the present and future than the past. Major legacy acts were left off the top lines of the billing, in favor of fresh names like Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, and Ariana Grande. But it almost didn’t go that way. Justin Timberlake pulled out of the lineup due to extenuating circumstances, and Kanye West was pretty much being printed on flyers right up until January 1. In a rare interview with Coachella co-founder and Goldenvoice president and CEO Paul Tollett conducted by LA Times, the circumstances leading up to Kanye’s departure are laid out clear. Kanye very publicly bowed out this year. What happened? When we were going through the stage ideas, he had some other ideas. He’s played Coachella, and he knows it very well. Both times were great, and so different. The last one was pure art. He has some great [production] ideas, but we just weren’t able to pull them off right now. I’d like to circle back with him and figure out a future plan of what to do with what’s in his head. He’s very capable of coming up with ideas that work that are pretty great. Up until Jan. 1, we were making a poster with Kanye on it. We started realizing we’re probably going to have an impasse production-wise. When Kanye pulled out, what did you have to do? It was surprisingly mellow. I had my team there. I told them, “OK, Kanye is not going to go this year.” There were some gasps. A future lineup with West on it isn’t out of the question, but clearly some changes will need to be made. Though, Coachella has made many, many changes over the years, so that shouldn’t present more of a challenge than anything else. After all, it’s most often artists pushing the boundaries of what’s “normal” that creates lasting, sustainable change. The rest of the interview goes over various topics, including: demographics, Coachella is around 54% female attendees year-to-year; sexual harassment, Coachella initiated its Every One campaign this year; and politics, Coachella is often lumped in with AEG owner Philip Anschutz who regularly donates to Republican political campaigns. Tollett still retains half of Coachella after Goldenvoice was bought by AEG in 2001, and maintains complete autonomy over the festival. Tollett said of the controversy, “I’m not a Trump supporter. I think people know I’m the owner-operator of the show. I’m partners with AEG. Phil Anschutz is the one they’re talking about, and he owns thousands of companies. He’s so not thinking about Coachella. He has no opinion if I should pivot from dubstep to trap-house. Most billionaires are Republicans. The billionaire attached to Live Nation is a Republican Trump supporter. Ticketmaster, same thing. Madison Square Garden? Billionaire Trump supporter. I know Mr. Anschutz isn’t a Trump supporter. None of it matters to me. I run a show 365 days a year, making all the decisions. Anyone who knows me and the Goldenvoice staff, they know we have a very colorful public history.” Read the full interview via LA Times here. This article was first published on Your EDM. 8. Jo Andres, choreographer, artist, filmmaker, and wife to Steve Buscemi, passed away earlier this week on January 7th at the age of 64. Her cause of death has not yet been disclosed, reports E! News. Andres came to prominence in the ’80s for her film/dance/light performances throughout New York City, specifically at the Performing Garage, La Mama Experimental Theater Club P.S. 122, St. Marks Danspace, and the Collective for Living Cinema. In 1992, Andres served as an editor on her husband’s debut directorial film short, What Happened to Pete. The film served as a precursor to her own directorial debut, 1996’s Black Kites, which starred their son Lucian, aired on PBS, and made the rounds at several film festivals, including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, London and Human Rights Watch Film Festivals. In addition to films, Andres also served as a dance consultant to the acclaimed Wooster Group and was an artist in residence at several respected universities, museums, and art colonies, including Yaddo, and The Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio, Italy. She and Buscemi met young and married in 1987. In the past, Buscemi has stated he penned love songs for her early into their relationship after she momentarily left him to travel around Europe with an ex-boyfriend for a month. “I was convinced our short romance was over,” he explained. “But when she returned, things heated up again between us. Her name is Jo Andres and we’ve been married now for 17 years. If she ever leaves me, maybe I’ll start writing songs again. But I’d much rather be happy with her than writing sad songs without her. She is survived by her husband and their son. Source
  9. Expect to hear a lot from Ryan Adams this year. Earlier this week, the denim-loving Lothario announced he’d be releasing three new studio albums with the first, Big Colors, to drop on April 19th. On Friday, we heard our first slice of music off the album with “Doylestown Girl”, and now we’re up for seconds with the decidedly European-flavored “Manchester”. Adams premiered the track on a Manchester radio station, offering a statement to go with the track, which is no doubt an ode to the city’s lush history of alternative music: “Manchester, the city and music of this mystical place shaped my entire life. It is at the heart of all the things I love about music from The Smiths, Joy Division, Oasis, New Order, Simply Red and The Stone Roses. I wanted to make sure this song ‘Manchester’ played first and only in this city I love so much. I hope you enjoy this and cannot wait to be back soon. All the best, Ryan Adams.” Fans looking for more of a departure from 2017’s Prisoner will find it in this track, which comes chock full of Johnny Marr-inspired six-string poetry and hallway harmonies that sound as if they’ve been roaming a wormhole for 30 years. 10. In what sounds like a rock ‘n’ roll episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, a Kensington resident claims that English pop star Robbie Williams has been pissing off his rock legend neighbor Jimmy Page by blasting the music of his Led Zeppelin rivals. Yes, according to The Telegraph, Williams has been playing Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Deep Purple whenever he catches Page strolling into his garden, going so far as to imitate frontman Robert Plant by “wearing a long wig and stuffing a pillow up his shirt.” Juvenile? Possibly. Genius? Absolutely. But, why? As previously reported, the two have been butting heads like neighbors in a Joe Dante movie ever since Williams submitted plans for a basement gym and pool at his West London home half a decade ago. Needless to say, Page hasn’t been hip to the construction, fearing that the work might damage his own property, Tower House, a Grade I-listed mansion that was designed by William Burges and dates all the way back to 1875. Over the years, the two have aired their grievances on the topic, especially Page, who has objected multiple times to Williams’ planning proposals and complained enough to get his construction workers fined for noise issues in 2017. However, in December, the local council granted Williams permission to build on the condition that officials were given assurances that he’d monitor any noise issues and vibration levels that might pertain to ground movement. Reports of Williams’ aforementioned tomfoolery against Page only began to surface when a local resident, who goes by the name of Johnny, submitted a letter to the council’s planning portal detailing such activities. “The committee may not have been aware that Robbie Williams has been playing loud 70’s rock music on outside speakers when he views Jimmy Page outside his home,” Johnny writes. “What’s been most annoying is that Mr Williams has played rock arch rival bands Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. “He obviously knows this upsets Mr Jimmy Page,” he continues, adding, “There have also been some reports that Robbie Williams has dressed up to imitate iconic Led Zeppelin frontman and lead singer Robert Plant.” Page’s publicist Mark Borkowski tells The Telegraph that he hopes to “arrange a meeting between the two musicians this month to settle their grievances,” while Williams’ spokesperson says the claims are “a complete fabrication and nonsense.” Whatever the case, it certainly makes for a great story. 12. Earlier today UK tabloid The Daily Star published comments attributed to Dwayne Johnson in which the actor expressed his disdain for the current generation of “snowflakes.” “If you are not agreeing with them, then they are offended — and that is not what so many great men and women fought for,” Johnson was quoted as saying. “People can be who they want, be with who they want, and live how they want. That can only be a good thing — but generation snowflake, or whatever you want to call them, are actually putting us backwards.” Now, Johnson has taken to Instagram to dispute the veracity of the purported comments. “Earlier today online, an interview dropped, apparently it was with me, where I was insulting and criticizing millennials. The interview never took place, never happened, never said any of those words,” Johnson says in the video. “Completely untrue. 100 percent fabricated.” “I was quite baffled when I woke up this morning,” Johnson continues. “I’ve gained such a great trust and equity in all you guys all around the world over the years, and you know it’s not a real DJ interview if I’m ever insulting a group, a generation, or anyone, because that’s not me. And that’s not who I am, and it’s not what we do.” “So to the millennials, the interview never happened. To the plurals, the baby boomers, the snowflake generation, I don’t even know where that term came from, the tequila generation, that’s a generation I just started, that’s a good one. You’ll want to join it. I always encourage empathy, I encourage growth, but most importantly, I encourage everybody to be exactly who they want to be,” he adds. In the video’s accompanying caption, Johnson doubles down in his sentiments, writing: “Settin’ the record straight. The interview never happened. Never said those words. 100% false. If I ever had an issue with someone, a group, community or a generation — I’d seek them out, create dialogue and do my best to understand them. Criticizing ain’t my style. I don’t cast stones and we all get to be who we are. #millies #plurals #boomers #TequilaGeneration ” Source

The announcement was made earlier today via social media. “After a successful debut in September of 2018, Grandoozy will be taking a hiatus in 2019,” the announcement reads. The inaugural year featured a stellar lineup featuring Kendrick Lamar, Florence & The Machine, Stevie Wonder, The Chainsmokers, Logic, Sturgill Simpson, Miguel, Phoenix, Young The Giant, St. Vincent, and more. 14. Don Diablo and Panic! At The Disco are two artists that aren’t typically heard in the same breath. But, today, that’s all about to change as the producer unleashes his remix for the band’s 2018 track “High Hopes.” The contrast between Panic’s pop rock appeal and Diablo’s signature future house style provokes the kind of sound you don’t know you need in your life until you hear it. “High Hopes,” like much of the band’s music, is insanely catchy and easy to sing along with — or, better yet, scream along with — and this remix is no exception. Diablo has been playing a version of this remix for some time now. Finally, fans get to hear the finished version whenever they so desire. The “High Hopes” (Don Diablo Remix) has finally arrived. 17. This years Dimebash tribute to the late, great Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott will feature a who’s who of rock and metal royalty. It’s just been announced that Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor, Dimebag’s Pantera bandmate Rex Brown and many others will be on hand to honor the guitar legend. Dimebash 2019 will take place January 24th at Observatory in Santa Ana, California. An all-star jam will be comprised of 55 musicians featuring the aforementioned artists, along with Anthrax‘s Scott Ian and Charlie Benante, former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog, Alice Cooper guitarist Nita Strauss, King’s X singer-bassist Dug Pinnick, Testament drummer Gene Hoglan and many others. The evening will also feature sets by Fireball Ministry and Rex Brown’s band Kill Devil Hill. In addition, a raffle will be held, with the winner given the opportunity to attend a private afterparty that will feature Dave Grohl’s BackBeat BBQ and an acoustic set by Kyng. Dimebag’s longtime girlfriend, Rity Haney, said in a press release, “Crazy thing about this event is, you never think the last one can be topped. But when this much creativity comes together in one room, dude, watch it go! It will light you up! The vibe is always so incredible.” The guitar icon was tragically gunned down onstage while performing with his band Damageplan in December 2004. Sadly his brother and fellow Pantera bandmate, Vinnie Paul, died suddenly in June of last year due to heart disease. Tickets for the event are available at TicketWeb.com. Source

Vincent and Yetep are starting off 2019 with a delightful new number titled “Same Page,” featuring the voice of Brooke Daye. “Same Page” won’t have anyone headbanging on the rail, but you can bet you’ll have plenty of people with their arms in the air and singing along. Vincent said, “When Yetep sent me a batch of demos in September and asked if I wanted to work on one, this song jumped out immediately. The lyrics and melody were insanely catchy and 48 hours later, the song was done. “Yetep held onto the demo for 5 months prior to asking, and once we finished this version together we had to go check in with Brooke Daye and the two other writers (@musicbyzacky & @itsjoeypepe) to see if they liked the song as much as we did.” Thankfully, “Same Page” is finally out now, via PRMD. 19. On the heels of Coachella’s 2019 lineup announcement, Goldenvoice head Paul Tollett sat down with the Los Angeles Times for a wide-ranging interviews. Tollett discussed his decision to drop Kanye West from this year’s lineup, the controversy surrounding Coachella owner Philip Anschutz, the festival’s radius clause, and the future of Goldenvoice’s FYF Fest. Tollett confirmed rumors that Kanye’s cancelation stemmed from a disagreement over the stage design “When we were going through the stage ideas, he had some other ideas. We started realizing we’re probably going to have an impasse production-wise.” Anschutz, owner of Goldenvoice’s parent company AEG, has drawn criticism for his multi-million dollar donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations and Republican super PACs. Tollett addressed the controversy by pointing to the separation of church and state between Goldenvoice and AEG, while also noting that the heads of Live Nation, Ticketmaster, and Madison Square Garden are also Trump supporters. “I’m not a Trump supporter. Anyone who knows me and the Goldenvoice staff, they know we have a very colorful public history. They see our 1,400 shows a year. They know our well-balanced staff, diverse from the beginning. Currently more women than men, all races, all sexual orientations. We never had a plan to do it that way; it’s just what all of us are. We book our shows that way too.” Though they don’t often work closely together, Tollett did credit Anschutz for encouraging to continue operating Coachella following an especially rough experience. “I don’t see him that much. I lost a lot of money in 2008 — because I put Prince on at the last minute. Stagecoach was also just starting. I lost the most amount of money I ever lost. He came to the show. I was petrified. I was ready to quit Coachella that day. I’m done. I’ve had some great years, now a bad one. He asks, ‘Do you know what you did wrong?’ I explained a couple of things. He says, ‘OK, let’s drive on.’ He’s shown that he sticks with culture. He sees who we book and hire. It speaks for itself how we are inclusive with everything.” Tollett also offered some insight into Coachella’s radius clause. “We want that first announcement. There are only so many artists. I have a list that I want, and there is another 3,000 or 4,000 that get submitted by the industry. I’m looking for 140 or 150 artists that are fresh. If you want to play a whole bunch of shows in town, I’m not mad at you. I just don’t have to put you on the [festival]. I want something unique and fresh for a 100-day window… “Sometimes I’ll get a band back together and pay them a big number. And I’ll get another festival upset that I have the first announcement and they have to wait. I feel like: Wow, I went and talked to the four guys at their house. I got them back together. If I was a jerk, I’d also grab that other city. I’m more focused on Coachella and a couple of other things. But I’ll get another promoter calling, going ‘We want to announce.’ And I’m like ‘You’re two months after me. You don’t even know the band.’ Tollett addressed the future of FYF Fest following the departure of the festival’s founder, Sean Carlson, in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations. “We attempted to put a show together that was already half-booked. There was a lag. Some bands were sitting there, some went away. We launched late. It went on sale and didn’t do well. Sad chapter, all of it: what happened to the women, as a festival going away from this city. Sean was such a good booker. He was my replacement in my mind. I’d still own the festival, but maybe I would have transitioned for him to be on the forefront. So it was a lot of emotion all at once. But these are unique times. The #MeToo things that are coming to light are affecting everything, as it should. These things should come to light… If we [were to do another event], it would be scaled down to what FYF was originally. It had a couple of big years, but what it should be is what it is. At a certain point, let’s do a redo.” Click here to read the full interview, which also includes details on Coachella’s new anti-sexual harassment initiative. Coachella 2019 goes down April 12th-14th and April 19th-21st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. The lineup includes Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, and Tame Impala, along with Solange, Janelle Monáe, Aphex Twin, Billie Eilish, and The 1975, among others. 20. Sequels are the engine on which Hollywood runs, at least these days. Studios are so thoroughly gun-shy about the prospect of handing nine figures to any unproven property that to get the kind of money that makes money, you have to have been there before. We’ve talked in recent days about some of the reboots that are going to flood the market in 2019, but today (for the final leg of our year-in-preview film week), we’re going to talk about the direct continuations of some of film’s biggest franchises. This year, we get new entries from the small multicolored brick department, the Keanu Reeves kills strangers department, and a new installment of the biggest non-Marvel franchise going these days, which Disney also owns. You’ve seen a lot of Disney all week through our film previews, and you’ll see a bit more here, but they’re hardly the only big player involved in this year’s crop of soon-to-be megahits. We’ll have more giant monsters, more people in Black, and even the third-generation revival of a renowned everyday hero. Without further preamble, let’s jump right in. You’re probably excited for most of these movies already, and it’s doubtful that you need us to tell you to be any more excited. But all the same, not all sequels are made equal, and in that spirit, here are our top 10 most anticipated next installments for 2019. By the way, if you’re looking for that killer clown who’s been stalking those kids up in New England, check out our 10 Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2019. We’re ready to float, too. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Film Editor __________________________________________________________ The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Warner Bros.) Release: February 8th via Warner Bros. Why We’re Excited: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller came in and smashed our Lego set of expectations with the 2014 original. What could have been an easy cash grab ended up being a hilarious meta-commentary on imagination and creativity. (Who didn’t gasp a little when Will Ferrell popped up halfway through? Genius.) Sadly, Lord and Miller skipped out on directing the followup, but they did leave behind a script, which gives us plenty of assurance that no stray pieces will be lost. What’s more, heroes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Charlie Day, Alison Brie, and Nick Offerman are all back with a slew of new voices, ranging from Tiffany Haddish to Maya Rudolph. We’re ready to build and believe again. –Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ John Wick 3: Parabellum John Wick 3: Parabellum (Lionsgate) Release: May 17th via Lionsgate Why We’re Excited: When last we left our favorite killing machine John Wick, he was deemed “excommunicado” by an international league of assassins, barred from the privileges of the Continental, and sent into the world with only his dog, his wits, and the kind of price on his head that every hired killer in the world now wants for themselves. If the early teaser images are any indication, Wick’s world is about to get a whole lot bigger, and even more dangerous than it already was. But if two John Wick movies have taught us anything, it’s that you never, ever bet against a determined Keanu Reeves. Plus, he killed a guy with a pencil! A fucking pencil! –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Godzilla: King of the Monsters Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Warner Bros.) Release: May 31st via Warner Bros. Why We’re Excited: If we had one major takeaway from 2014’s Godzilla, it was probably the last one anybody should come away with from a Godzilla movie: there wasn’t enough Godzilla. For all of the visual flair used to bring the famed Toho monster and protector to life, there was a great deal of humans arguing and not nearly enough in the way of grand-scale battle. The awaited sequel promises to change that, however, with some of Godzilla’s most notorious enemies arriving to decimate cities and engage in massive kaiju battles. If we’re not going to get another Del Toro-helmed Pacific Rim, we need now more than ever for history’s most venerable kaiju franchise to enjoy a true revival. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Men In Black: International Men In Black: International (Sony) Release: June 14th via Sony Why We’re Excited: It’s been over six years since Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (and Josh Brolin) closed the doors on the Men In Black headquarters. Of course, six years is also more than enough time for Hollywood to say, “Okay, let’s do this again,” which is exactly what they’re doing with the forthcoming spinoff-reboot from director F. Gary Gray. Relocating to the London headquarters, the film follows Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as Agents H and P, respectively, who are tasked to solve a murder mystery that sends them around the globe. Given that the world has never been weirder, we’re actually okay with this franchise returning for good, and the talent ensures that we won’t need to be neuralized in another six years. –Michael Roffman Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Son of Shaft Son of Shaft (Warner Bros.) Release: June 14th via Warner Bros. Why We’re Excited: More like ecstatic. For years, this writer and longtime fan of the Shaft franchise has been wondering why there wasn’t ever a sequel to John Singleton’s 2000 reboot/sequel. Not only was it a hit, but Samuel L. Jackson has been an unstoppable blockbuster presence ever since, essentially laying the foundation for Marvel’s billion-dollar film franchise. Sadly, it’s taken this long to get a followup, and sadly, we need to have another offspring for the younger audiences with Jessie Usher, who was achingly dull in Independence Day: Resurgence. Still, there’s an intriguing novelty in watching three John Shafts from three separate generations — which means, yes, the OG himself, Richard Roundtree. Let’s just hope director Tim Story finds his old swagger and brings back some of that Barbershop magic. If so, we can dig it. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Toy Story 4 Toy Story 4 (Pixar) Release: June 21st via Pixar Why We’re Excited: It’s very, very hard to argue that anybody truly needed another Toy Story. That’s not to say that it’s unwanted, or that audiences will be unhappy to hear Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return again as Woody and Buzz. It’s just that Toy Story 3 had about as perfect an ending to a trilogy as any movie trilogy has ever put together, a poignant finale that harkened all the way back to the opening shot of Pixar’s industry-changing 1995 classic. Adults and their children wept together, and we assumed that as went Andy, so went the series. But Pixar has rarely steered its faithful wrong, and it certainly hasn’t yet with the Toy Story movies in particular. As long as the magic remains, so will the love. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer Trailer: __________________________________________________________ Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (Universal) Release: August 2nd via Universal Why We’re Excited: Whatever Instagram-fueled talk of dissension in the Furious Family ranks there may have been last year, the franchise’s first spin-off is still on the way. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will reprise their characters from Fast Five and onward, likely leading to some variety of ridiculous large-scale vehicular chaos. It’s a fairly risky move for the franchise, which overexposed itself in the early years before returning strong in the back half. But Johnson’s as guaranteed a global box office draw as you can find these days, Statham has to tend to his other pet franchise until the Megiverse gets truly underway, and even the deeply cumbersome title of this one won’t stop it from being a late-summer smash. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Zombieland Too Zombieland (Columbia) Release: October 11th Why We’re Excited: The sleeper comedy/horror hit Zombieland arrived in 2009, at a time when The Walking Dead was still a cultural touchstone and zombie-mania hadn’t yet overwhelmed every corner of American pop culture. A full decade later, we’re curious how well a sequel will still be able to reach audiences. Having said that, director Ruben Fleischer and his key foursome (Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin) have all returned a few hits and Oscars later, a strong first step for any belated sequel hopeful. It’ll just have to get even more creative this time around. –Dominick Suzanne-Mayer __________________________________________________________ Terminator 6 Terminator 2019 (Paramount) Release: November 1st via Paramount Why We’re Excited: At this point, we’re more curious than anything about the forthcoming Terminator sequel. While 2015’s Terminator: Genisys gave audiences an upset stomach with its pretzeled time logic and crude attempts to sell Jai Courtney as a stand-in for Michael Biehn (sh’yeah right), this next entry plans to be the proverbial Judgment Day for any of the sequels following, um, Judgment Day. In other words, it’s a direct sequel to the movie everyone loves most — even if this writer will go to bat for the 1984 original any day (come at me) — and even has direct involvement with the original team. Linda Hamilton returns as Sarah Connor, Arnie‘s back in some capacity, and even James Cameron lent a hand in the story department. The new blood ain’t too bad either with Deadpool director Tim Miller leading Halt and Catch Fire champ Mackenzie Davis. Okay, okay, one more chance, guys. –Michael Roffman __________________________________________________________ Star Wars: Episode IX Release: December 20th via Disney/Lucasfilm Why We’re Excited: Look, we can bicker all we want about how there are too many Star Warses, but we all know our asses are in those seats come Thursday evening. Granted, 2017’s The Last Jedi turned the fanbase into Israel and Palestine, but the Force is strong with this sequel. Director JJ Abrams is coming back to close things out — hopefully with the originality that Rian Johnson mustered up — and all of the principal heroes of yesteryear are gone, leaving the stage for our youngsters, who are pretty rad. Sure, this writer will walk out immediately if there are any echoes of Jabba’s Palace, Ewoks, or speeder bikes, but odds are we’re in for something pretty, pretty special. Disney wants people in those theme parks, and The Mandalorian needs to be a hit, so this film is all sorts of crucial for the Mouse House. May the Force be with you, JJ. –Michael Roffman Source
  21. Mike Patton will perform a couple of high-profile gigs in the coming days. The Faith No More singer was just booked to sing the National Anthem at the playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams this weekend, plus he’s been added to the star-studded lineup of the Chris Cornell tribute concert taking place Wednesday. Patton, who has an impressive six-octave range, will belt out “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum tomorrow night (January 12th). The game is set to air at 5:15 p.m. PT / 8:15 p.m. ET on Fox, with Patton taking the mic shortly before kickoff. The news was announced in a press release sent out late Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, Patton himself revealed that he has been added to the performance lineup for “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell”, which will take place Wednesday (January 16th) at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Previously announced acts who will honor the late singer include Metallica, Foo Fighters, Ryan Adams, and members of Cornell’s bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. The evening will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Currently, Faith No More have no tour dates scheduled, but keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Roddy Bottum recently revealed that members of the band have been getting together to work on new music, although there’s no plan for a new album at this time. 23. Last week, Megadeth teased a January 11th announcement with a cryptic video showing footage of vintage bombers and featuring a riff from the Rust in Peace track “Take No Prisoners”. While it was speculated that the revelation may have to do with the band’s upcoming 16th album, it turns out the announcement is actually a greatest-hits disc titled, Warheads on Foreheads, due March 22nd. No tracklist has been revealed yet, but Warheads on Foreheads will contain 35 remastered songs handpicked by frontman Dave Mustaine himself. The artwork, which can be seen above, features the band’s longtime mascot, Vic Rattlehead, riding on a bomber plane Dr. Strangelove style. Pre-orders will be available to members of the band’s Cyber Army fan club beginning January 25th. 24. There’s no shortage of streaming options available, not to mention a few highly anticipated ones on the horizon from Disney and WarnerMedia, but the newest one, which comes via the Amazon-owned IMDb, distinguishes itself by costing you not a dime. IMDb Freedive is accessible via the IMDb website and Amazon Fire TV devices, and will feature full seasons of TV shows in addition to movies. Per Deadline, the Freedive catalog will regularly incorporate new titles. It is, however, ad-supported, so prepare yourself for that. “Customers already rely on IMDb to discover movies and TV shows and decide what to watch,” Col Needham, founder and CEO of IMDb, said. “With the launch of IMDb Freedive, they can now also watch full-length movies and TV shows on IMDb and all Amazon Fire TV devices for free.” You can access Freedive here. A quick browse of its selection reveals it to be pretty fun. Right now, you can stream movies like Adaptation, Last Action Hero, Memento, and True Romance, as well as TV shows like Heroes, Fringe, Quantum Leap, and, should you be so inclined, The Bachelor. 25. Veteran Swedish doom metal band Candlemass are set to release their 12th album, The Door to Doom, on February 22nd, and none other than Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi lends his guitar skills to the track “Astorolus – The Great Octopus”, which can be heard now in the player below. Candlemass are back with their original lead singer, Johan Langquist, who rejoined the band last year after leaving the band more than 30 years ago, following the release of their 1986 debut album, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. “Astorolus – The Great Octopus” starts out with some heavy riffage and truly showcases Iommi with an epic solo at around the 3-minute mark, letting metal godfather show off the skills that laid the foundation for Candlemass and countless other metal bands. The song follows the release of the album’s first single, “The Omega Circle”, which dropped last month. The album can pre-ordered at this location. In addition to lending his talents to the Candlemass track, Iommi is busy remixing Black Sabbath’s 1995 Forbidden album, and is working on a new solo album.
