  1. The legendary Carlos Santana is revving up for a big year, including the 20th anniversary of his rock band’s Supernatural LP, an accompanying Supernatural Now tour and — drum roll please — an epic return to Woodstock for the 50th anniversary. As we now know, there are two major 50th anniversary celebrations going down to commemorate Woodstock this year. One known as Bethel Woods Music and Culture Festival, on the legendary grounds of the music festival that is in no way officiated with the actual Woodstock Ventures, LLC. And the other, put on by the real company, expected to take place in nearby Watkins Glen, New York, which will be called Woodstock. In a reveal to Rolling Stone, Santana says he has chosen to play the festival on the original grounds at Bethel Woods. While he wanted to work with the original Woodstock promoter, Michael Lang, he explains why he went with Live Nation for the 50th anniversary tribute. “They have an amphitheater there. I’m going to invite whoever is still here, whether it’s Joan Baez or members from Sly Stone, and I’m going to play Santana music. Santana’s going to be the house band, but I want to be able to honor those who are still here and maybe invite rappers like Common or Kendrick Lamar. Santana’s very interested, like Miles Davis, into connecting with people from 7 years old to under 33. I don’t want to be just like a jukebox in the twilight zone, stuck in the Sixties.” There you have it. Santana is the first official headliner of the celebration in Bethel. It’s only fitting considering the band played the first-ever Woodstock event back in 1969. Now, we’re just waiting on a full lineup to roll out. Save the date: August 16 – 18, 2019. 2. Few artists have the clout to perform a concert at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Pink Floyd performed a show there in 1971 and the Grateful Dead did three in 1978, while this millennium so far has seen visits only by artists at the scale of Shakira and Mariah Carey. Now the primordial purveyors of funk-influenced alt-rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers, are joining the aforementioned ranks with an upcoming show in the pyramid complex. The band announced today that the historic performance will take place March 15th, following RHCP’s upcoming Australia/New Zealand tour. Tickets for the show are on sale this Friday, January 18th, at 8 a.m. local time. Check out the poster and a promo video at the bottom of this post. It’s unlikely the band will have any new music from their anticipated twelfth studio LP out by then. Drummer Chad Smith explained on Monday to Sirius XM’s Volume West that progress on the follow-up to 2016’s The Getaway was delayed by the devastating Woolsey Fire this past fall that killed four people and destroyed more than 1,500 homes and buildings in southern California. “We started to work on [the new album], which, for us, is just getting in a room and making some noise and putting some notes together,” said Smith. “And then the fires came, and the house we were working in, there was no damage, it didn’t burn down, but we couldn’t get back in there. So that halted our [progress].” You can listen to the audio of the interview below: Red Hot Chili Peppers held a benefit concert dubbed “Malibu Love Sesh” at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles this past Sunday to raise funds for victims of the fire (where St. Vincent notably performed a haunting cover of the band’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik highlight “Breaking the Girl”). Singer Anthony Kiedis also recently co-authored a Rolling Stone piece where he outlined the many costs of global climate change. Source
  3. A portion of ticket proceeds support the Upbeat Academy Foundation, a non-profit organization providing New Orleans youth with opportunities to study hip-hop and dance music production. The latest additions to the lineup of performers include: lyrical alt-rapper and Odd Future co-founder Earl Sweatshirt; Swedish DJ and producer Kasbo; experimental dance pop band Kero Kero Bonito; experimental low-fi soul and ambient artist Yves Tumor; jam-funk trio SunSquabi; UK house DJ Mason Maynard; and New Orleans swamp funk band The Iceman Special. These artists join a previously announced roster featuring: Lana Del Rey, A$AP Rocky, Dog Blood (Skrillex x Boys Noize), Excision, Kevin Gates, GRiZ, RL Grime, Louis The Child, Ella Mai, $UICIDEBOY$, Playboi Carti, Dashboard Confessional, Fisher, Toro Y Moi, The Black Madonna, TOKiMONSTA and many more. Off of Kitsuné Musique, the club banger brings together three of dance music’s rising stars, all with one purpose: to make you move that booty. With a quick tempo, some pitched-down vocals, and a fat kick, they’ll succeed in doing just that. There will be no better place to dance though than on the recently announced Party Lok tour featuring Pat Lok and Party Pupils. You can find the full list of dates below and make sure to be on the lookout for Lok’s EP coming in 2019. 9. Not ones to sit still for too long, Migos are back to serve up “Pure Water”, a new collaborative song with producer Mustard (fka DJ Mustard). The joint effort sees Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff reveling in their many riches — the ice chains, the female company, the stacks of cash. According to Mustard, the new track is supposed to play out exactly like an extravagant celebration. “It sounds like a party,” he said in a statement. “And I’m not saying like a down South party or a Trap party. It’s like Migos coming to LA and having a house party here.” Take a listen to the party tune below. “Pure Water” follows an unsurprisingly busy 2018 for Migos. As a group, the trio appeared on “Carpool Karaoke” and released their Culture II album. Quavo and Takeoff also put out their own solo debuts: Quavo Huncho and The Last Rocket, respectively. Offset, whose relationship with Cardi B has been rocky to say the least, is expected to drop his own debut LP soon. “Pure Water” Artwork: Source

  11. Mac Miller is up for his first (posthumous) Grammy Award this year — Best Rap Album — and if he wins, the rapper’s family will be there to represent. Cardi B, Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T and Travis Scott are also in the running for the Best Rap Album honor. It’s safe to say, it’s anyone’s game. Miller’s 2018 album Swimming is up against some seriously stiff competition: Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, Nipsey’s Victory Lap, Pusha’s Daytona and Scott’s Astroworld. Mac’s mom has stayed active on social media following her son’s tragic death. She shared the photo below upon hearing of the Grammy nomination. No doubt, she’s proud. Both of Mac’s parents reside in Pittsburgh, and his mom especially has been dedicated to sharing her son’s legacy. The Mac Miller Circles Fund is close to raising $1 million for kids in his hometown. 12. Steve Carell is reuniting with The Office creator Greg Daniels for a new Netflix comedy series based on President Trump’s proposed Space Force. The series is described as a workplace comedy centered around the individuals tasked with turning Trump’s dream into a reality. There’s only one problem; as an accompanying teaser trailer notes, their mission is rather unclear. “The goal of the new branch is to ‘defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’…or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.” Carell himself will star in Space Force, marking his first role as a series regular since wrapping The Office in 2011. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s set to earn a record-setting $1 million per episode. Plans for the show first went into motion shortly after Trump rolled out the asinine idea in June 2018. After getting word of the project, Netflix quickly scooped up the rights and gave it a straight-to-series order. An episode count has not been determined as scripts are still being written, but if it’s anything like Carell’s space-themed sketch for SNL, we’re in for a real treat. Source
  13. We already know that Kayzo has a ton of music coming out in 2019, including collaborations with k?d and 1788-L. But new IDs just keep popping up and we’re starting to lose track. The newest track to come out from Kayzo is a brand new collaboration with Valentino Khan, “Novocaine.” This one is relatively new in Kayzo’s arsenal, just barely being played out at shows — at least, the first record we can find of it on social media is from December 30. It’s a chaotic blend of moombahcore and hardstyle, and even a little drum & bass. With so many styles all shoved into one track, it’s hard to believe it came out as cohesive as it did, but the proof is in the pudding. My only complaint is that it sounds a little too Valentino, not enough Kayzo for my tastes. But there’s no doubt I’d still be raging when this is dropped by either of them in a set. Check out “Novocaine” below, out now on Mad Decent. This article was first published on Your EDM. Source: Kayzo & Valentino Khan Drop Fresh New Banger, “Novocaine” Source
  14. At last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, lauded French filmmaker Claire Denis made her English-language debut with High Life. Immediately, word came out that it was the kind of movie you have to see, whether you like it or not, inspiring everything from early walkouts to glowing praise. Then, A24 (which has developed a reputation for throwing money behind precisely that kind of movie) picked it up, promising that it’d get a wide enough release to baffle and engage audiences all over the country. Now, the first trailer for the film has emerged, offering a better look at its surreal, sensual deep-space journey. Robert Pattinson, André Benjamin (also 3000), and Mia Goth star as criminals being jettisoned into a black hole in deep space as part of a long-form experiment. Juliette Binoche plays a scientist aboard the ship, whose experiments quickly cross the line into the sexual and surreal alike, as the unwilling crew’s sense of reality begins to shift and warp. From what we’ve heard, things will get weird; as our own Sarah Kurchak noted, “It is, for all of its action, and unexpected hints of the underbelly of humanity, and bodily fluids, actually quite a languid, melancholy film. It doesn’t shock its viewers, nor does Denis seem to have any interest in doing so. It quietly, meticulously unmoors them instead.” Audiences won’t have to wait long to weigh in; High Life will begin its limited rollout on April 12th. In the meantime, you can check out the first trailer below. Source
  15. There’s a sadly necessary thread woven into a sizable proportion of modern music. Artists across the genre spectrum are fighting to reclaim bits of their self in the face of an oppressive and aggressively misogynist patriarchy. Berlin-via-South Africa musician Alice Phoebe Lou came face to face with the worst of it during one alarming night in New York City, and while she made it through physically unharmed, the emotional distress weighed heavy on her. Until she was forced to unburden herself through song. Lou’s new single, “Skin Crawl”, is her way of addressing the root cause of situations like the near sexual assault she luckily avoided. Over a dizzied slow dance of jazzy indie, she sings of independence and a refusal to stand for patronizing, failed flirtations: “Don’t need to have a prince of my own/ How about right now I’m my own prince?/ Maybe I wouldn’t cease to exist/ Without a man to do the hard things/ Maybe you picked the wrong girl/ But there’s not one girl who deserves your aggression.” Even the song’s video plays on this idea of self-actuality in the face of masculine dominance. Directed by Colin Read, the clip finds Lou going about her daily life — exercising, reading, changing a light bulb. Only all the furniture in her sparse apartment is made up of the rearranged bodies of shirtless men, all interlinked and aligned in just such a way to support Lou. Take a look below. “Skin Crawl” comes from Lou’s forthcoming album, Paper Castles, due out March 8th. Below, read a note Lou wrote regarding the difficult inspiration and meaning behind the track. I was in the heart of Manhattan after taking myself on a solo date to watch Angel Olsen & I was feeling elated. I ended up at a bar, drinking a few drinks with strangers. I felt dizzy and left to call a cab. The last thing I remember, I was standing on a corner, unable to comprehend how my phone worked, feeling as though my world was upside down, panicking. A few hours are then lost and I never got them back. Then I’m suddenly in Brooklyn and it’s 4 AM, I’m barely able to walk, with a man I’ve never seen and he’s taking me somewhere. I remember thinking that he must be taking me to safety, because I was falling over and clearly needed to be in a safe place. Something kicked in and I realized I was in danger. I dropped my jacket and ran as fast as I could. Running and falling and crying and pissing my pants. I’ve never been that afraid. Kind strangers brought me to safety. The next day I was a wreck. Trying to rack my brain and understand how someone slipped something into my drink. But I was lucky. Many people aren’t. It took me days to feel ok again. Physically and in my mind. But I realized how important it was for me to not let that moment define me and change something that was so important to me; the independence of going out alone. So, I did it again. Only a few days later. Trying to release the fear and not let it control me. I went to a Fela Kuti night and danced my feet off. But I remember being so acutely aware of the men around me on the dance floor; how often I was touched in places I didn’t want to be, how many times I was grabbed, told to smile, rubbed up against, you name it. I felt like I had to fend men off like it was some sort of sick game and the circumstances made it so difficult for me to just enjoy myself. I got home full of fire, ready to turn it all on its head, write a song from my perspective about what pisses me off, to get it off my chest and then set fire to it in my mind so it has no hold on me. It’s about the little things; the words, the comments, the feeling that ripples through your skin every time you’re told you’re a bitch because you don’t want to give him your number. Because for me, it’s the little things that are the starting point of a broader culture of non-consent and sexual aggression. And I guess I needed to write a song that was straight to the point. I find that when dealing with “heavy” subject matter that is important to you, it can be a tricky balance trying to get the message across while keeping up the poetry. I went through a lot as a teenager and young woman, experiencing a range of extremely negative and traumatic incidences at the hands of men. This is not to say that I paint men with a single brush. I am lucky to have an incredible community of supportive, sensitive and wonderful men around me, in my band and social life, and I am so grateful for them. These are the same men that appear in my music video for “Skin Crawl,” close friends who were happy to play a role in a video where I could use them as my objects and my furniture in order to turn things on their head. The video was a joy to make; a DIY, low budget, full of love day. The song’s intention is to ask that we all work towards a world where we strive to make each other feel comfortable and safe at all times. That’s the dream really. Cozy and safe and equal. – Alice Phoebe Lou Source
  16. Back in August, Jack Tatum dropped his fourth studio album as Wild Nothing. The 11-track Indigo boasted early singles like the funk-laden “Partners in Motion” and the synth-speckled “Letting Go”. Today, Tatum is back with “Blue Wings”, a standalone single leftover from his original Indigo sessions. According to the dream pop songwriter, while the track is in line with his usual Wild Nothing material, it didn’t quite gel alongside the other Indigo selections. “There were a number of songs that were kicking when I was finishing Indigo and ‘Blue Wings’ was very nearly included,” he explained in a press statement. “I had sent the album off to mastering, but the song didn’t sit right with me and I decided, at the last possible moment, to leave it off the album. Described as “intentionally a very bittersweet sounding song,” it features additional instrumentation from a familiar face and an important message of motivation: “I asked Ben Talmi who did the string arrangements on ‘Shadow’ [a track off 2012’s Nocturne] to help out with this very simple dissonant string part I was hearing in my head which is now my favorite element in the track. It’s a song about walking through to the other side of crippling self-doubt with the help of someone you love. It’s a reminder to myself not to let things spiral, hard as it may be at times.” Take a listen to “Blue Wings” below. Tatum recently appeared on Kyle Meredith With… to discuss Indigo. 17. Earlier this week, the NFL officially announced Maroon 5 as the headliner of the Super Bowl 2019 Halftime Show with special guests Travis Scott and Big Boi. The news came after months of speculation and a more exhaustive search than usual; Rihanna, Pink, Nicki Minaj, and André 3000 all reportedly turned down invites to perform as a showing of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL QB who was seemingly blackballed from the league for protesting police brutality. In order to secure Scott’s participation, the NFL had to agree to donate $500,000 to Dream Corps, a social justice charity associated with Kim Kardashian. A new report from Variety also claimed that Scott decided to move forward with the booking after receiving something of a blessing from Kaepernick himself. (Read: The 30 Most Anticipated Tours of 2019) “A source close to Scott said that while the two did not necessarily agree, they emerged from the conversation with mutual respect and understanding, with the rapper taking the stance that everyone makes a statement in their own way,” Variety wrote. Now, however, Kaepernick is denying that he signed off on Scott’s decision to perform at the Super Bowl. Today, the former quarter retweeted a series of tweets that directly refute the Variety report regarding Scott and Kaepernick’s supposed phone conversation. One from radio host and partner, Nessa, reads “There is NO mutual respect and there is NO understanding for anyone working against @Kaepernick7 PERIOD. #stoplying.” Another came from Ebro, Hot 97 DJ and friend of Nessa. “Kap did not approve this bullshit! Get the fuck outta here,” his tweet read. Nessa also appeared to tweet directly at Scott. “If you’re with them, then you are definitely not with us,” she posted, alongside a definition for the word “sell-out.” Kaepernick also retweeted this on his account. Check out Kaepernick’s telling retweets below. Super Bowl 53 is set for February 3rd, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Source

  19. Altitudes & Attitude, a band featuring Anthrax bassist Frank Bello and Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, are releasing their full-length debut album, Get It Out, this Friday, January 18th, and have teamed up with Consequence of Sound and Heavy Consequence to debut the song “Part of Me” (listen below). While the band’s two members come from thrash-metal royalty, Get It Out is a collection of melodic and catchy rock tunes that offer a significant departure from the music of their respective legendary bands. “Part of Me”, however, is one of the harder-hitting songs on the album, and it features guest guitars from Alice Cooper shredder Nita Strauss. Ellefson tells us of the song, “The heavier stuff is usually the stuff that I bring in, which I think gives the album nice color … It was originally a guitar idea that I had, but then we had an 8-string bass in the studio, and I plugged it into a Kemper [amp], and I started writing a lot of bits and parts for ‘Part of Me’ … Frank helped me finish up the lyric idea … and it became that song.” Bello adds, “David came up with a great musical piece for ‘Part of Me’ … The lyrics [are about] being in a place where you want to express yourself, whatever that may be in your life. If you always wanted to do something, don’t be held down by anything … I certainly have an inner anger, a part of me that I don’t want to let out, but if you keep pushing me, it’s going to come out … I think everybody’s got that in them, but they try to keep it in, until they’re pushed to the point where they can’t help but get it out.” The album has been a long time in the making, with the duo first introducing themselves with a three-song EP in 2014. With their commitments to Anthrax and Megadeth, respectively, it’s taken Bello and Ellefson a few years to complete the full-length disc. In addition to Strauss, the album features guest appearances from Ace Frehley, Jon Donais (Anthrax), Gus G. (ex-Ozzy Osbourne), Christian Martucci (Stone Sour), Russ Parish (Steel Panther’s Satchel), and Miki Black. The disc was produced by Jay Ruston and features drumming by Jeff Friedl (A Perfect Circle). Get It Out is available for pre-order at iTunes and Amazon. Altitudes & Attitude are making three appearances in New York City over the next few days, plus they’ll perform on the ShipRocked cruise later this month. After that, they will support Slash Ft. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators in Europe beginning in February. See their full itinerary here. Source
  20. Less than 24 hours after Sony announced it would be returning to Ghostbusters with director Jason Reitman, the studio has released a creepy new teaser trailer to further drum up hype. As expected for a teaser, there are no stars, but there is a character: the original Ecto-1. As we pull closer to a shadowed barn — to the sounds of the late Elmer Bernstein’s score, no less — we see a tarp covering what turns out to be the boys in grey’s mode of transportation. But something else is going down. Someone’s in there testing equipment, as any self-respecting fan knows the sound of an unlicensed nuclear accelerator when they hear one. Sh’yeah. What’s going on? Who are we going to call? We’ll find out as we inch closer to its Summer 2020 release date. In the meantime, grab a Twinkie, maybe even some Stay Puft fluff, and watch the clip below. Reitman son of original director Ivan Reitman, will co-write and direct the sequel, which will be set in the original universe. In other words, the 2016 Melissa McCarthey-led reboot is being completely ignored. “I have so much respect for what Paul [Feig] created with those brilliant actresses,” Reitman explained, “and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film.” Source

  23. It’s been almost five years since Hozier blasted to folk rock stardom on the back of “Take Me to Church”, the mega-smash single from his self-titled debut. Now, the Irish musician is finally ready to return with his sophomore full-length, Wasteland, Baby!, due out March 1st via Columbia. Spanning 14 tracks, the album follows last fall’s Nina Cried Power EP. Two songs from that release, including the Mavis Staples- and Booker T. Jones-featuring title track and “Shrike”, have also found their way onto Wasteland, Baby!. They’ll join previously released single “Movement” and the latest offering, “Almost (Sweet Music)”. (Read: Hozier Describes the Strong Female Influences Behind Nina Cried Power) The new song is a jaunty number that skips towards warmer seasons, built for open fields or sandy beach roads. It’s loaded with hand-clapping back beats and more of Hozier’s references to past greats (Duke Ellington and Chet Baker, in this case). Take a listen below. Pre-orders are now live, and you can find the Wasteland, Baby! artwork and tracklist below. Wasteland, Baby! Artwork: Wasteland, Baby! Tracklist: 01. Nina Cried Power (featuring Mavis Staples) 02. 24. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hospice, the acclaimed third studio album from The Antlers. To commemorate, the Brooklyn indie rockers will soon release a vinyl reissue of the LP. They’ve also lined up their first tour dates in four years. The Hospice reissue is due to arrive March 8th through Frenchkiss/Transgressive. It will be pressed on double white vinyl and come packaged with deluxe artwork and packaging courtesy of Zan Goodman, the record’s original artist. As for the group’s upcoming trek, dates run from mid-March through late April and include stints in both North America and Europe. According to frontman Pete Silberman, fans should expect “small, acoustic” evenings featuring full performances of Hospice as well as special guests. Since Hospice, The Antlers have gone on to release two more albums, the most recent being 2014’s Familiars. Consult the full itinerary below. For more info on the reissue and tour, head to the band’s official website. But it will be a bit different this time as the core band now consists of myself and drummer Michael Lerner — longtime multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci is no longer with the band. Though we’ve pared down for the time being, these shows will feature some old friends and guests, and together we’ll perform Hospice in its entirety. I hope you’ll join us for these special evenings. I’m truly looking forward to revisiting these old songs in a new light and seeing your friendly faces again. Your patience and support means so much. Revisit Hospice single “Bear”: Source
  25. In previous interviews, Corey Taylor had suggested that Slipknot would hit the studio in January to record their new album, and now the frontman has confirmed that the band is indeed in the studio creating the follow-up to 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter. With a simple caption of “Guess what we’re doin… ?” accompanied by a photo of himself in front of recording equipment, a cup of coffee (or tea?) and a microphone, Taylor didn’t need to say more in an Instagram message he posted yesterday afternoon (January 15th). Slipknot have already put in some studio work, having released the surprise single “All Out Life” on Halloween Day, but now the band has hunkered down in earnest to complete the rest of the album, which Taylor has said is targeted for a summer release. At the time of the song’s release, Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan stated, “Right now is a very exciting time for Slipknot. We’ve been working on new music for the last two years, and ‘All Out Life,’ the song and the video, is just one of many concepts in the works. It’s a fitting taste to get you to the next thing. Get ready for what’s to come. We challenge you to All Out Life.” In an October interview with Resurrection Fest TV, Taylor revealed, “We have 20 songs that we’ve demoed, and they are really, really good. … However, the way we’re talking right now, we’re trying to find ways that everyone can hear all the songs. So we’ll put the album out, and then maybe we’ll release something after that.” As for touring, Slipknot have unveiled dates for a 2019 European tour, and have also signed on to perform at the Iowa State Fair this summer in their hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. Meanwhile, in a recent interview with RadioVegas.Rocks, Taylor said he also wanted to make a “dark jazz album”, which would include re-imaginations of Slipknot and Stone Sour songs.
