Need help with BPM and Serato DJ Intro!!

What do you mean by "live mix"? Most softwares should allow you to record mixing on the go. I hope you're not talking about like, recording the whole mix through a mic. If you're not, then I'm pretty dense for thinking that bahahha. Well yeah, most people do that but Soundcloud only allows users for like 2 hours of uploads which honestly sucks. Also, they're extremely worried about copyright laws so they could remove your mix. I believe mixcloud is the better way to go. I think they're not to worried about copyright laws (the whole website is just DJ mixes) also you can set up like a little list of the tracks you played. Hey man, thanks for the advice, but with the SB's I honestly have no idea how to beatmatch manually. I mean I know sync is 'cheating' but how do you learn to do it yourself in the firstplace? Note: I mainly mix Generic & Big Room House, Melbourne Bounce, and I'm really getting into deep house atm. (Oliver Heldens, Tchami) Thanks again mate I was always pretty good at beatmatching and mixing songs without the use of a the BPM counter on my decks from the very start. I watched a bit of YT tutorials and mostly taught myself how to mix. I know it's a bit tough to learn like this for others. If you're interested , I made a (pretty embarrassing) tutorial on how to beatmatch. I took everything I did when I beatmatch and divided it into steps so it was easy for beginners to understand. It was honestly the most awkward video ever. The reception I got was mostly positive, though. The good comments were from both beginners and people who already know how to mix telling me that it was an awesome way to look at beatmatching. There was like one actual constructive comment and the rest were idiots who are like "HURR DURR, WHO NEEDS 2 LRN HW 2 DJ W/O SYNC BUTTON?!". I could post it later if you're interested. -

Hey man, welcome to the forum. First off: I don't know how the guys at ADJF feel about pirating but most other forums will flame the shit out of you even if you mention the word. I mean, I pay for everything these days but I posted in a production forum a few months back and mentioned slightly about how I used to crack software and I got shat on bad. You should consider buying music, I mean considering the fact that you use mp3 320bkps anyways (most people try to get wav of aiff format of beatport), buying music of itunes shouldn't be such a hard process, it's like $1.70. Think about it like this, if you were doing a gig and the guys didn't pay you for it, you'd feel pretty pissed off right? Secondly: I don't use software much but most of these software should let you edit info on individual tracks, right? Right clicking on each track should give like an "edit" option and you could just set the BPM individually. If you want to find the correct BPM, you can use Mixmeister http://www.mixmeister.com/download-bpmanalyzer.php. Works great but does have it's problem with pirated tracks. Another method is by doing it manually which shouldn't be too tough. I'll post the methods step-by-step if you're interested. Also, i found this in a serato forum: "Just double click the BPM of the song in the BPM column in your crate and you can manually type it in." Lastly: You should learn how to mix without sync button. It will save you a ton when your software screws up. In fact, once you've learned mixing properly, you would be laughing over the fact that you needed software in the first place. Plus, most "old school" DJs will respect you a lot more and even new school ones that use laptops. I DJ with Pio 350s and people always ask me where the laptop is. It's funny, these guys think I'm like a master DJ or something. -
I'm not a professional by any means but here what I've gathered over the years. 1. Whatever with more than 16gb and a processor that's arouns 2.4ghz fast (the intel i5s and above are great), the higher the better. Macs are great but you can't upgrade and all that. In the end, it doesn't really matter, whatever works best for you. 2. Personally, I use FL but it doesn't really matter with this one, whatever works best for you. Check out with no.4 though. If your friend has Ableton software, then get that one too. It'll be useful for collabs and you can ask him questions. Synth/vst wise, it doesn't matter as long as you know how to use it. I've used 3xosc (pretty basic piece of software) for a while and I've managed to get some big, massive, awesome sounds. Most of the stuff you'd need come with the DAW you're using. It's not about what you have but how you use it. Best tip by Flume: it's better to use one synth with all the knowledge inside and out vs having all these synths with no knowledge about them. 3. Any type of midi keyboard will do. As long as you can play basic stuff on it, that's fine. Another thing Flume said, he just has a $100 midi keyboard. 4. Not specifically for electronic music but it really helps out A LOT. I think that's it. I'm hoping to make a few tutorials soon on music production and synth design though, I'll try to be as general as possible. I'll also try to explain things without being to techical. Have fun making awesome music

Cheers man Yeah, you're absolutely spot on. That's why I'm asking and researching so much, people recommend some super cool options and some are free. Either spend cash on something or use what you have to the best of your ability. Cheers for your opinion man, I'm probably gonna end up using the freeware stuff you recommended to me until I can buy more powerful stuff like Sylenth or Massive. .
-
Right, sorry about that. On me phone using Tapatalk. Not sure how to do that from here .

Well, here's an example of what I've been making and the type of sounds required in the future. (First complextro track made. Earlier tunes weren't complex at all and focused more on melodic leads and chords but I want to start making those tracks more complextro orientated so I need that big sound): http://soundcloud.com/misterchowmusic/misterchow-the-sass-monster All sounds were made with 3xosc and FL's stock plugins (Fruity Compressor, Parametic EQ, etc). Well, for the wobbles and some basses I add in a (free) 3rd party bitcrusher but everything else is made with the stuff that comes with FL. I'm just a broke musician haha (which is why I want a synth with an all in one effect panel) .

Haha, definitely man. Especially since it's free. I literally have nothing to lose. I'm just waiting for my computer to finish rendering this video (it's almost been 24 hrs, gosh darn) until i finally get them and try it out. Seriously though, cheers for the suggestions, really appreciate it .

Right, definitely will I've seen TAL and the Zebralette floating around, definitely gonna check those out since I've seen good comments about them. Cheers

Massive, Sylenth and all that are the most expensive but probably the best ones out there. They're like $200+ though :-( I know $100 isn't enough but a guy can dream right :3 Plus (not to toot my own horn) I'm pretty confident with my synthesis, I just want a vst that has everything inside (cutoff, effects, etc) to make my workflow easier Jest checked out the website and it's actually around $75 aud. it actually looks pretty dope, might check it out. Right now I'm just demoing some VSTs that are suggested to me or I found online. Any suggestions at all will be helpful Thanks guys

Hey all! After using 3xosc for about a year and a half now and I'm finally ready to move on to using a better synth. The reason for this is because as nice and simple as 3xosc is, it has a ton of high and resonating frequencies that absolutely ruin the mix. I recently finished a bootlegging a song and after mastering the track, these problems really showed up and I had to re-mix the track multiple times until it got to an acceptable level but it's still pretty bad. I've been looking around but I want some opinions on some good synths to use :-) Some of the stuff I'm looking for are: 1) Simplicity: Main reason why I liked 3xosc so much, it was so easy to use. Nothing extra to distract me and got me straight into music production mode. Of course it shouldn't be too simple which leads me to my next point. 2) Absolute tweakability: I design all my sounds from the ground up. This is where 3xosc falls down. If I need an effect on the sound such as a chorus or a phaser, I'm forced to put the track on the channel mixer and use something like Fruity Chorus or Fruity Phaser. Now, Fruity Phaser is the bomb but Fruity Chorus sucks and it's hard to make synths sound more chorus-ey and warm with overdoing it or under doing it. Flangus and Fruity Flanger sucks too! Of course some of you would say I should get third party VSTs but I'd rather just buy a synth with everything I need. Designing stuff like wobbles is also a pain. 3) Great sound: This is probably the most important part for me and the reason I want to upgrade. As stated above, I need to EQ the poop out of 3xosc just to make it sound nice and doing all that gets me out of the groove of making music. I need something that doesn't have frequencies everywhere. Plus, at higher frequencies or when you're increasing the pitch 3xsoc aliases so bad. Just give me something that's more "stable", if you get what I'm saying. I've been looking around and it looks like everyone's digging Z3TA+ 2.1 but that costs $100 straight up and just because I say "under $100" doesn't mean I'm ready to buy something that much. I wanna look around first before making a final descision. Also, I make Electro House stuff so I need something that can make big sounds. Thanks all

Ah, thanks man. That's what I do anyways so all is well. Just thought it was interesting that some people mix after making each individual stem but I know that's more towards tracks with real instrument in them. Oh well, whatever works.

Hey guys, what's going on? Been doing some production work lately and I've been reading up on articles and books on how to make music (been making music for years, just finally decided to get more into it reading stuff to improve myself). Just a question: When do you guys mix your songs? I googled this for a while but didn't find any answers that pleased me. Do you guys make the whole track and mix it after or do you mix it as you go. I'm asking this because I had a client who told me to export each stems for a track as he's gonna send it to a mixing engineer (this was a while ago) but I already placed compressors, eqs, etc on each synth and drum, something I normally do. I'm working on a track right now and thinking whether I should turn off each plugins, export each stem (as WAV), import it back to FL and mix it from there. Thx 4 any halp guize :-)

What's up guys? A couple months ago I posted a thread here about DJing for weddings. The main thing that got me nervous was the music and I ended up giving it to a friend. Well now, I got an email to do a fundraiser this weekend and I thought that'd be a good thing to do since it'll give me a good image. But again, I'm kinda worried about the song selection. Can anyone give me a list of tracks (like 10-20?) or a playlist of music that everyone will enjoy so that it will maybe to help me out. I'm actually asking tons of people for help on music and I'd thought asking a bunch of DJs who's been doing this longer than I have would also help. Thanks Ps. Maybe I should search up "wedding playlist" and get songs that would fit the situation.

I can only mix like 4-5 songs in 10 minutes Well, after the intro and when the song drops, count the beats till yo get to 64. On the 65th beat, play your cued track and transistion. I'd also reccomend you keep all your songs at the same BPM Here's a (bad) mix I made as an example: HAHAHA, that's the truth. The amount of times people barged into my room whilst I record is TOO DAMN HIGH!

Thanks man

*Dr Nick's Voice* Hi Everybody! I've just finished a mix last night and uploaded it literally 5 minutes ago. Tell what you think :3

I really don't know haha. I have tons of friends with an extremely THICK aussie accent and I don't find them annoying. But when I hear an aussie accent rap I'm like "eugh" *shudders*. Maybe it's because they TRY to sound gangsta but just suck at it miserably haha. As for 360, I hear he's travelled and been in rap battles around the world and gets tons and tons of praises but i really don't find him special. He's either really shitty or really okay. Nothing to special. I'm really into old skool hip hop and i even listen to latin every once in a while (even though I don't understand the language haha)
-
Meh, i kinda can't handle it. Some of the tracks you guys posted are alright but not anything special. I gues it's the accent but I kinda think it has no style aswell. Maybe thats just me though.
-
I really don't like it. One of the main reasons being that it thinks it's the biggest thing ever. Just my opinion though, I rememberd hearing a track by this guy called 360 and I thought to myself "wow this sucks". Anyways I really haven't talked to anyone about it, it just popped up on my newsfeed like 20 minutes ago so it just popped up in my brain and i gave a couple songs a listen and really could't sink it in haha. Thoughts?

all these tips really help me a lot guys I probably should follow Funky Steve's advice. But these tips that all you others gave me gave me a small idea about what to do. I'm really just worried about the music :/ i don't think i'll do a wedding anytime soon, though. Just thinking abiut it freaks me out, haha
-
Thanks for the tips. but for music, well say the couple are 20-30 years old and most of the guest would be around 20-50 years old. So I'm not sure if I should like just buy a whole bunch of 80s/90s compilation albums

I don't think this question is asked enough as I can't find any good posts online on what Wedding DJs actually do. Here's the story: Since I've last recieved my Pio 350 pack (thanks to the advice from the members here), I got to do some small house parties. Usually once a fortnight or once a month. Doing my very first gig taught me a few things: 1) ALWAYS have radio music ready. I guess I finally understood what pro DJs meant by "the people want something to sing to," 2) Say no to girls who ask you to take care of their handbags. 3) Make sure no one touches your shit. 4) Always come to the place early. 5) There will always, ALWAYS, be a fight Now, house parties are one thing. If I fuck up, no one really cares that much as they're too busy being drunk and having sex. But one day, I got an email from someone asking me to DJ their wedding. I gave them an honest "No". I've never really thought about DJing for weddings. I don't attend a lot of weddings and I don't know how to DJ for weddings. Thing is, if I fuck up during a wedding, I'll probably fuck up real bad. I just don't know what to do during weddings. So I just want to know a couple things about DJing for weddings. 1) What kind of music should I play. They'll usually be tons of different aged people and I don't know what mind of music to play. :c 2) How big should my PA speakers be? Or how many speakers would I need? 3) How long do the gigs go for? 4 Do I need to bring tons of special gear like lights and stuff? I'd appreciate it if someone could answer these questions or if they could even give me more advice too! Thanks :3

I dunno, i'd just like to point out what I problems I have with nu-dubstep. I mean, I grew up in the dubstep scene so I really can't stand this nu-dubstep ,but there are some songs that I can tolerate (rhinestone eyes (Hooky Remix), Blood red, broken string, etc). But the problem that I have with nu skool dubstep is it's beat. Nu skool tries hard to be this filthy, dirty genre of music but it's just hard to dance to cuz of the beat. the beat's 2-step so it skips the 2nd bar (so instead of kick-snare-kick-snare, what you get is boom-*silence*-snare-*silence*-boom-*silence*-snare). Take this song for example. It's amazing (and like I said, i'll tolerate some nu skool dubstep) but I don't feel like it's dancable. how many people here actually mix dubstep in clubs? what was the crowd's reaction? 2 step is a VERY chilled out beat and that's why old school dubstep does it better. beacuse it's chilled and relaxed. you don't have to dance to it because you can't. it's not like nu skool where you feel like you just gotta dance to it. example of old school: another thing that i absalutely HATE about nu skool is it's trance elements. take this song (Tristam - Follow Me) for example: as you've noticed, it has a TERRIBLE drop. it was a beautiful intro and then suddenly, the drop comes in and ruins it. it's like you looking at some pretty flowers and some guy just comes in a shits all over the flowers. it's unnecessary and I hate it. Thirdly.... bass. I hate this word. I hate this word with a passion. Not because I hate bass but how it's so abused. Like seriously, ask any kid out there what's bass and they won't even know how to answer (I asked this kid once and he said "it's the heartbeat to the song".... facepalm.jpeg). I hope most of you guys know what bass is 'cause if you don't... I don't want to live on this planet anymore. But yeah what I'm trying to say is: NU DUBSTEP HAS NO BASS. Sounding 'bassy' isn't enough. I mean, how can people with subwoofers mistake this midrange synth with 'bass'. Those wub-wubs you hear aren't bass. They're mid ranged sounds that made to sound bassy. So in all technicality, it's like high school girls: Amazingly amazing but more faker then barbies. Last thing I hate bout nu skool are the fans. No really the fans just piss the shit outta me. Need I say more? So yeah, I'm just wondering: How many if you guys mixed Nu Skool Dubstep in your sets? And the crowd's reactions? and is there anybody out there who feels the same thing as I do?
