Sweet, I'll probs make a video this week! I'll upload it sometime later (probs next week) but I'll make it unlisted because I don't wanna throw off my Youtube uploading schedule haha
-
Will we actually do this live haha? Idk how to do that D:

There's this channel on Youtube that has a series called "Against The Clock". Basically, they have to make a section of a song (most likely the drop) in 10 minutes. Interestting stuff. But yeah, Lab. Would love to give this a go!

Oh man, the Sonys are fantastic. I hated them at first because there was not enough bass and too much midrange. Then I realised that I have a tiny Asian head (or more likely, the unit was quite loose) and I have to tighten the headphones up with a scarf around my head. Tight and punchy bass, strong and present mids and clear highs, it's pretty great. Considering the fact that these were made in the 80s and are still loved today, it tells you quite a lot about it. I wanna get a second pair of headphones, looking at the Audio Technica's AT-M50. I have tested a pair of AKGs though, I loved the sound. I'd probably get those if I could find them. I don't know much about monitors, tbh. All I know is that people seem to quite like and/or respect the ones made by Yamaha or maybe there's one Yamaha model that's quite liked. As far as I know, your monitors are as good as your room, so if your room sucks, your monitor will suck too haha

LOL at number 5 and number 9

Headphones are great though I don't use them as my main sound source. For sound design, bass, levels, pretty much everything else, I use my monitors. Even though my room is far from perfect nor do my monitors even sound that good (Behringer Truth B2013A), I prefer them for 80% of what I do simply because they're "beefier" than headphones. When I work mostly on headphones, they don't sound as big as when I'd work on monitors. Plus, my ears get less tired on monitors. Still, I use my cans (Sony MDR V6) for one job only and that job is EQing. This is because, to me at least, EQ is such a subtle and delicate job but it's the most important aspect of a mix. I cut more than I boost. I only either take out or increase by 1-3dB. I EQ in mono AND at low volumes because it limits me in a "box" and it forces me to make every move count. It also helps reduce ear fatigue significantly. I only use my cans for just this one job but it pretty much makes my tracks sound a whole lot better. So yeah, cans are great. At least, good ones. Idk, I think people debating about monitors vs headphones, Logic vs Ableton, electronic music vs "real" music, etc, are all just dumb. Too busy picking a side and yelling at each other instead of doing something productive

I don't really "hate" or feel that self-conscious my old music. In fact, I'm quite content with sharing it around, at least within closed quarters (with friends or on a message board). I'm more critical of my current work haha. Probably because I know my old work sucks and nothing will come out of it

Hahaha, noo. I named it after the Norse mythology for the end of the world which is called Raganrok. Though I'm pretty Raganarok Online is based off the same thing as well.

Beginner question, Jukebox - DJ
Narukami replied to JohnnyHotPockets's topic in Beginner DJ Tips & Tricks
Since you're mostly gonna do private functions, personally I'd recommend a laptop + controller setup. Scottie already recommended some good cheap controllers, so check those out. The reason why controller set up is better is because it's easier to carry and set up compared to CDJs. I have the CDJ 350s. I have a gig on the 23rd but it's far away and I have no transport. AND I have to haul around semi heavy gear. It's a pain, haha. As for beatmatching, of course you can beatmatch anything but it's not really super important for private gigs. What's more important is being able to read your crowd and seeing what they might like and dislike. I recommend asking your host for a tracklist before hand and then look for music with that kind of sound. Welcome to the forums and good luck in the future -
Basically this. If you're a mobile DJ (like I was), crowd reading is REALLY important. These people are hiring you to read the people at the party and play music that suits them. Playing music according to your crowd will get more people to dance. Ultimately, that's the job of any DJ; to keep the crowd dancing

I think anything before 2015, even 2014, is my limit. Most of my stuff before that was pretty bad. Dang, can't wait to check it, Cupe. Here's literally the first song I made. It was Daft Punk that inspired me to get into this music stuff. Which is why it's called "Classic House", lmao. Hope you guys also like the SICK artwork that came with it! http://tempsend.com/503BE363EA Temporary link, will die in about a month. Don't want this spreading around

Oh god, I actually did play a remix I made at a gig once. It was a remix of "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyes Peas. Didn't even make it past the intro and I knew it was a bad idea, so I quickly changed to a track that's actually GOOD, haha. It was so embarrassing, I vowed never to play my song at a gig ever again bahaha.

I keep two of my old iPods and stuff with me because I'm a hoarder. I never touched them because I couldn't access them, they have passcodes and I forgot what they were. Today, I was listening to some music I used to listen to back in the day and was thinking about my progression as a musician over the years. I got curious and wanted to listen to my old tracks that I made when I first started getting into making music (back in 2011). I thought they were in one of my old iPods but I couldn't access it to check. Then I remembered I had software that could bypass the lock code and access the files inside. Lo and behold, there they were; my old tracks! I just ripped them from the iPod and holy crap... they're terrible! Like, cringe-inducingly bad. I can't help but laugh and cry at the same when I listen to these tracks! Though, it really made me appreciate the time and effort I put into music over the past 5 years. Maybe if anyone's interested, I could post them here and we can have a laugh at 15-year old me's attempt at making music hahah!

This is a cool series. It reminds me of the Pareto principle or the 80/20 rule. Which means that 80% of the results is caused by 20% of the work. So these guys did like 80% of the main elements (main melody, drums and bass) in 20% of the time (10 mins). I think it'll be a fun thing to do. It forces you to do the main aspects of the tracks and get those parts right, instead of focusing on all the small things that just wastes time. So yeah, would love to do this if people are down.
-
Yeah, Behringer's are okay. They're cheap and sound nice when I watch movies and stuff on them. For production, though, I think Yamahas are the ones that arere quite good, from what I've heard. As Scott said, they're quite flat. My tunes mixed with my Behringers sound incredibly mid-rangey so I need to mix with both headphones and speakers.
-
Yeah, it is pretty simple haha. Though, compared to the muddled mess that the version I made before, I think it works well. Idk, I'm pretty protective over my own music :c I don't really want to add a vocalist unless the singer's contribution really adds some oomph to my track
-
Hey there everyone! Got a new song for you guys to check out! A fun tune with a chilled out beat to bop your head to! Check it out and tell me what you guys think
-
Thanks man! Glad you dig it. It's cool if you don't mind the climax at the end, different strokes. To me, the song was slowly building up and I didn't know where else to go, so I figured I had made a huge drop at the end haha. Haha, it's flattering to know that you have my tunes stored in your hard drive

Surviving the Loudness Wars: Ambivalent on Mastering
Narukami replied to russell's topic in Music Production
Good read. Actually got a chance to listen to a dubplate master, haha. It sounded pretty dope. I had a mate who did something similar to one of my tracks a looong time ago. He used analogue equipment and tapes to EQ and compress the track and recorded it back to digital. It sounded incredible. Even though I've never had any experience with analogue, tracks that I love the most use a blend of analogue and digital. "Random Access Memories" by Daft Punk used both analogue and digital recordings, and the album sounds so amazing. -
Hey there, everyone! Got a new track for you guys: Ragnarok. A dark and brooding track that mixes elements of ambience, hip hop and electronic orchestra. All building up to a huge climax at the end! Check it out and tell me what you guys think

Not sure why this hasn't been posted here yet. Then again, I didn't listen to it until today. Still, I thought this is worth a listen to ya'll! Sounds pretty awesome to me. Though some tracks do sound a bit art-housey to me. Seems like the direction he's been going towards lately and you can hear it with his remix of Sam Smith's "Lay Me Down" and in his single "Some Minds". I'll probably get it anyways when it comes out. I bought his first album and there are some gems in there that I absolutely loved.

Not sure what to make of this. On one hand, there's always been lots of dumb rumours made about Apple products that are either untrue or just not as bad as people say. On the other hand, Apple did get rid of CD drives on newer Mac models because they deemed irrelevant (which is a pain in the ass if you collect CDs). Time will tell. If they do end up doing this, they'll probably compromise and make like a lightning port peripheral that has a 3.5mm port converter thing.

Gareth Emery Inspires Fans To Follow Their Dreams
Narukami replied to Cupe's topic in DJ Headquarters
I love this story, it was just what I needed. Last night, I was feeling pretty shitty about myself because this one song I was working on sounded like ass. I wasn't feeling too confident about my work. I started feeling fear and paranoia because I didn't think my music was worth anything to anyone. Woke up, read this and now I feel a little bit better about everything. Cheers for the share
