the 404 is the older model, the SX is better workflow wise. The 404 uses a CF card, the SX uses an SD card. The SX has no internal banks, so you NEEEEEEED a card in there. the sx is "way" faster, it works with .wav files directly and doesn't resample them when you load them up. It also doesn't obliterate the samples you load into a lower bitrate (supposedly) If you can get an SX, get an SX, otherwise the 404 will do pretty much the same job. alternatives would be: Korg electribe MX Akai MPC500 or 1000

if experimental is how you'd describe them, the roland has some pretty sick effects, so I'd lean that way

OK, let's be clear, does your friend want a sampler or a drum machine? also, I gather that it needs to have a sequencer built in (can record you playing the pads and play back), is this 100% required? The roland SP404 is pretty cool, but it's a little limited in terms of being standalone. the sequencing side of things with the 404 is a bit tricky to get your head around, but it tends to make people get creative (sometimes good, sometimes bad). I have a friend who wrote a few tracks on the 404 that were really dope, but whenever I played with it I just couldn't get it to do what I wanted it to. The other option which was mentioned in chat is an MPC. I have an MPC 1000, they were (are) the 'go-to' for sample based hiphop production. They have an excellent sequencer, and the later models have plenty of flexibility in terms of sample memory and recording time. What sort of things will you be using it for/with?

Different laws for different places and eras. From memory the arrangement has to be so prominent that a normal person could identify it(like taking the piano stabs from Britney spears hit me baby one more time) in another work. Like I said, if I could release a track with every arrangement imaginable and sue everyone who made money, someone would have already done it. Also, I'm fairly certain you don't need to get clearance for covers unless you are making money off them. It's when money comes in that the legal stuff starts to flare up. Imagine if the Winstons decided they wanted money for each use of the amen break...

Once again, you can't own a 4 note progression. You can own the recording. Getting pissy about someone stealing your creativity when there is no creativity involved is stupid. Using the same logic, I should just write a hour long track that goes through every note progression possible, and complain about anyone who "steals" it. Or publish a track using a 4/4 808 kick, and sue everyone who "copies" me Edit: also, all of his music sounds the same. Not all music.

Joel is a little bitch, and doing shit like this is the reason sample based music has such a bad reputation at the moment. Given that all of his music sounds exactly the same, law of averages says that someone would produce some sort of work similar to the same 4 fucking notes he used eventually. If it was sampled, and no credit given, then sure, he might have a case. It's not sampled(who would waste time sampling that small and simple a piece of music?) The way samplers like dr dre. used to get away with using certain samples is hire session musicians to play the part out in his own recordings. There is 0 legal standing to accuse theft of a 4 second loop that consists of less than 5 notes, that makes part of a completely different song, in a completely different genre. Nobody is going to listen to that hardstyle track and go 'is this deadmau5?' bottom line: joel is an egotistical WHALE that needs to pull his head out of his own ass

i was explaining to him that we had done something like this to 1 of mine where the circuit bridged somewhere and my TT wouldn't turn off, you had to replace the transistor with a new 1, im still waiting on it to explode on me 1 of these days That was a weird thing, had nothing to do with the popup led circuit. I'm not sure it had anything to do with the mods at all, and I still have nfi how or why that happened. Basically a resistor in the power supply part stopped resisting

what techs have you got? are you going to be replacing the halogen light, or is there already LED's in the pop up light? ESSENTIAL TOOLS: soldering iron (duh) flux braid (for sucking up the old solder/cleaning up your work) small wire cutters to clip the LED legs screwdriver (Philips head) from memory you need a small one and a big one, but being a wrx junky/car parts person tools I'm guessing won't be an issue If there is already LED's, you will probably find it's a 5mm in the popup. if there aren't, then be prepared to grab a resistor to drop the voltage down. Also, be VERY FUCKING CAREFUL WITH THAT CIRCUIT because it's NOT fused on the transformed power side, so if you short ANYTHING you can pretty much guarantee that you will explode a transistor. I know this from experience. The bright side is that the PCB incl motor is only about $100 off ebay, so if you fuck up, it's not the end of the world. as far as sourcing the LED's, I got mine off ebay for like $2 for a pack of 50 or something. Any LED will work, the strobe is just 4 5mm LED's wired up to pulse on/off at different times in tune with the motor electrics (but since it's already LED's in there, you don't have to stress to much about voltage/current changes) The popup light can house 2 3mm led's, or 1 5mm led (the 2x led's look brighter, but are a major bastard to fit into that little cap, so be prepared to fiddle around a fair bit). I cannot emphasise enough on being VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS CIRCUIT. buy heat shrink tubing if you don't have any, because you really really really really really really don't want a short on that line. The 45/33 buttons have a little 3mm led under them, those are easy. It's been a little while since I've had mine gizards out, so I might be forgetting something. Post if you have Q's, I've fixed/replaced most of the parts in a 1200 at some point...

Not the way you are thinking, no. You can remove the click from the pitch slider if it annoys you. You can also remove the quartz lock for more precise pitch adjustment near the 0, but if you are going to be recording samples n shit off them, the quartz lock is handy. Internal grounding is probably the most useful mod if you set them up and pack em up often, I kept the grounding cords on mine incase I ran into a mixer that didn't share a ground (never did and not likely to). The light mods are easy unless you have a halogen popup, in which case be very careful with the popup circuit (unfused, and will effectively ruin the whole pcb if you have a short on it)

that's the official linkin park youtube channel, so not likely to be a shop. Might not be a screen grab of his laptop, but will be interesting to see the outcome of this...

I think I've broken even, had a play around with self digital distro with itunes amazon etc... Cost to put up was like $30, I think I've made $30ish off sales... was at one point looking into starting a label, because they CAN make an absolute killing off artists
